"fox&friends first" this morning. >> thank you so much for starting your day albeit a cold one with us. we begin with that extreme weather alert. temperatures fall temperature alert. it is plunging much of the country into a dangerous deep freeze. 200 million americans in sub zero windchills from chicago to tulsa. schools are closed and flights are grounded. how long will this bitter blast last? >> let's go to maria in the weather center. what is the latest? when is this going to change? >> it doesn't look like it will be lasting too long. what is being blamed for all of the cold air is a polar vortex. it is cold air that is in place but it dipped down into parts of the lower 48. we have record breaking temperatures in many areas of the country. take a look at how much

temperatures have changed in the last 24-hours. we have antarctic front that produced muggy conditions across parts of the east yesterday. but today in terms of precipitation much colder temperatures drop by more than 50 degrees in parts of the north carolina in the past 24-hours. incredible stuff with the storm system. otherwise the actual current temperatures in the single digits in new york city, below zero in cities like cleveland, chicago and also minneapolis. you can see the city of memphis. this is an area that is typically a little warmer this time of year but even in parts of tennessee we are talking current temperatures in the single digits. atlanta current temperature 8 degrees. you factor in a wind you are looking at sub zero. we had temperatures reported 32 below zero in cleveland. that is dangerous.

we have windchill advisories in the entire eastern half of the country down to florida. the forecast by saturday 37 in chicago. it will feel very mild. lake-effect snow we are going to be measuring feet of snow and a blizzard warning currently in effect for the city of buffalo. over to you. >> stay inside if you can. >> stay indoors. thanks maria. the brutal condition as far south as atlanta and grounding flights making a real mess for travelers. nearly 2,000 flights have already been canceled today. the temperature at o'hare currently colder than the south pole. did you hear that? heading south that will help. even the people on the beach in

extension but there are some in the gop who want to see some changes to the way feds support america's jobless before they write that big check. >> this plan treats the symptoms. it is like giving aspirin for somebody suffering from cancer for some time. we have to deal with the underlying problems of unemployment in america. the white house wants it done. it would be cruel to deny benefit checks for unemployed families. his team is holding up a history book telling republicans under president bush they were extended five times and the unemployment rate is lower today than it was back then. >> we have just emergent situation right now. we have as i said -- today is the day when people have been cut off. but today is the day they find the check not there.

the president believes we should pass this right away with no strings attached. >> the first senate test vote to gain senate support is scheduled for 10:30 this morning. it was supposed to meet last night. but 17 senators could make it back to dc. they were delayed because of the cold. president obama is giving a speech supporting the extension of the benefits at the white house. >> a lot of planes canceled. peter doocy thank you very much. charles krauthammer sounding off on what he calls the real issue behind unemployment benefits, entitlement. >> now is not the time. 4 and a half years recovery at least as defined by the administration itself. it is not the time. if not now, then when? european level of unemployment, chronic unemployment subsidized. the fact is if you subsidize

apples you get more apples. oo you subsidize unemployment you get more of it. that's what economic studies show. we will accept the short term but foenl you build into the bill an unwinding. it isn't an entitlement it is a way to help people temporarily. that would be a good solution. >> krauthammer goes on to say most americans want to work keeping the handouts going would have the opposite effect. obamacare opposition reaching a new high. 68 percent of voters are against the requirement that every american be covered by health insurance. last week 61 percent say healthcare would decline because of obamacare. they dodge questions of how many young people have signed up so far. >> i can tell you the demographic data hasn't

available yet. er i know they plan to make the data available. several states running around the marketplace are reporting a good mix of people are signing up. >> they fast tracked the enrollment goal that would help the marketplace effectively. routine tonsil surgery is routine achievement. the family lawyer saying the children hospital of oakland refused to give her a feeding tube for almost a month. it is like terry schiavo who suffered brain damage. she died in 2005 when her husband had her feeding tube removed over the rejection of her family. schiavo's brr talked about jahi's case. >> healthcare is eroded they are putting in the hands of ethics

committees and they are making decisions in place of family members. we believe the family should have the chance to provide her the help to see if she can improve. the foregone conclusion she should be killed once you do that you can can't reverse that decision. >> jahi's family remains focused on her daughter and her condition. the woman known as jihad jane ten years in prison for conspireing to kill a swedish artist over a cartoon that offended muslims. pauline faces a life term but was given credit for her guilty plea in the help of indicting two others. she could be released in two years for good behavior. john mccain making an appearance on jay leno. while they be long to the same

were canceled all across the country today. we are expecting another painful day today. this awful weather all across the country has made for terrible times for many an air traveler. yesterday jet wblue made the ra decision to suspend operations at lowing cgan airport in bosto. a spokesperson for the airline says that decision was made so the airline can service its equipment and so the crew members can get some rest. am it left passengers in a lynch. they will get back fully operational by 3 this afternoon. that's the latest live from laguardia airport. ainsley? >> thank you, robert. the man accused of murdering a beloved priest in northern california is areigned. he is fa -- arraigneded.

an allegation of torture. he was released from a jail near the saint bernard catholic church several hours before killing reverend freed. freed was beaten to death with a wooden stake and metal gutter pipe inside the church's rector re. a funeral was held monday with more than 1,000 people attending. a man who slapped a crying baby on an airplane will spend the next 8 months in federal prison. he pleaded guilty to simple assault in october for hitting that 19 month old boy and using racial slurs. he has a prior assault conviction and was on probation for a dui at the time of the february incident. a homeowner is suing the home's developer alleging the company knew about the aggressive behavior. the developer knowingly concealed the dangerous individual would be her

neighbor. the neighbor has been harassing her and her family including making death threats and racist comments. a mom has been called a cyber bully because her daughter is holding a shaming sign. it is bullying and punishment for her mother. she has to sell her ipad with the money from the sale going to an anti bullying charity. while many praise the mom for teaching her daughter a valuable lesson others said the mom herself was being a bully by shaming her daughter on-line. >> is it a teaching tactic or is the mom being a bully herself? you can tweet them to us at foxfriendsfirst or shoot us an

8 degrees below zero. 30 below zero in chicago. it feels colder in chicago than in quebec city. we have windchill advisories and warnings in effect. when it gets this cold outside it is very dangerous. you are looking at the concern for frostbite and hypothermia if you are not properly layered up. stay safe in florida to the midwest. single digits in chicago and cleveland and also in minneapolis. take a look at the forecast for the upcoming weekend. much better. in the 60s in new york city, 40 buffalo. 737 in chicago. lake-effect snow coming down he here. heather and ainsley a couple feet of snow and a warning in effect for the city of buffalo. heather, happy birthday.

zero. >> it is amazing those pictures. >> the extreme cold delaying a major vote in the senate on jobless benefits. the vote is rescheduled for this morning. acting fast to extend the emergency unemployment insurance. doug luzader is live with that story. >> good morning heather. in an effort to push the party line vote in extending the benefits failed because there were so many empty seats due to the weather. today the president will ground himself with unemployment americans and make the chase that the chief economic advisor outlined yesterday. >> when you have historic levels of long-term unemployment you know that there are just millions of people still who are desperately looking for work. they are eligible because they were working before. they are looking for a job. >> those benefits at the state level generally run 26 weeks.

the federal program called emergency benefits were first enacted about six years ago adding as many as 47 additional weeks. they have been renewed again and again. they have added another extension with $6.4 billion. republicans might be willing to back a measure if it is paid for with cuts elsewhere. >> we are in the messaging phase of this debate. this is not about capping a bill it is about scaring mess sanging points. if the democrats wanted to find the money somewhere to offset the cost they could and i predict in the end they will it will be passed and it will be paid for. >> later this morning we expect the senate to take another crack at this. in order to get it passed at least a few republicans will get it passed go to the senate and it will have to pass the house. >> back to you and happy birthday. >> thank you, doug. have a great morning. >> thanks, you, too.

obamacare opposition reaching an all-time high. a new poll finds 58 percent of voters are against requiring every american to have health insurance. 51 percent think healthcare will decline because of obamacare. ron johnson filed a lawsuit to stop what he calls a double standard in healthcare laws. this suit is about over turning unfair in the office of management when they give their coverage through the exchange. they have tax advantage and contribution. no other american gets that same special treatment. it's a matter of basic fairness. >> he is hoping to eliminate the obamacare subsidy for congress. >> this morning the girl declared brain dead after routine tonsil surgery is at a new facility receiving treatment. she is in pretty bad shape.

the if a amly lawyer saying the children's hospital of oakland refused to give her a feeding tube for almost a month. her family remains focused on their daughter and her survival saying a lawsuit against the hospital is not out of the question. >> an afghan girl recruited by the taliban is found wearing a suicide vest. the young girl reported to be as young as 8 years old. police stopped her as she was trying to carry out the deadly attack against the afghan border police in southern afghanistan. she says her brother a prominent taliban commander sent her on that mission. the little girl has been designed. it is unclear what charges or punishment she will face. banning the sale of guns is unconstitutional. that is according to a federal judge who overturned chicago's ban on the sale and transfer of firearms. the judge ruled the law went too far by banning legal buyers from

coming crashes two to three-cars away. it is widely deployed. it could provide warnings to drivers in as much as 76 percent of potential multi vehicle collisions. it isn't without the drawbacks. it relies on gps but can be used for tracking which has privacy concerns. both rely on having a good security system in place. the they have to be unique in the size and structure. that could be very expensive as could the prospective liability issues that could arise if it was a system involved in a crash. the highway safety administration is expected to issue a decision in the next few weeks. with he will keep you posted on that, ainsley.

welcome back to "fox & friends first" . more on that extreme weather alert. more than half of the country waking up to the coldest temperatures we have seen in decades. maria molina is live outside where it is in the single digits. that doesn't even include the wind chill. >> the actual temperature according to our thermometer is 4 degrees and that is without the wind. when i initially walked out i thought maybe it is not that cold but within seconds you start to feel
