and i don't care. >> with afghanistan tottering, the movie lone survivor opens wide tomorrow. we will talk with the man who wrote the book, navy seal marcus latrel. caution, you are about to enter the no spin zone. the factor begins right now. ♪ ♪ >> hi, i'm bill o'reilly, thanks for watching us tonight. happy 50thday war on poverty. that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo. 50 years ago president linden johnson announced that america would wage intense war to lift americans out of poverty. johnson's visitation fair chance to develop their talents in order to make a good living. it was a noble idea. extensive analysis by the foundation says the war on poverty has actually harmed the nation because nearly $21 trillion taxpayer dollars has been spent and the state of poverty in america has not really

improved very much. if the country had handed the 21 trillion directly to the poor, given them the money, poverty would have dropped drastically. all the social engineering has failed. write not guilty "wall street journal" yesterday, robert rector lays it out. in 2012 the fed spent close to $1 trillion, that year alone, on 80 welfare programs that give cash assistance to about 100 million americans. those stats do not, do not include medicare and social security. of course, welfare beneficiaries is comprised a solid core of the democratic party. we see the dems ramping up for this year's election by promising even more benefits in their quest for income equality. but true poverty is being driven by personal behavior. not an unfair economic system. in 1963, just 6% of american babies are born out of wedlock. now 41% are. and that includes 72% of

african-american babies. according to heritage, single parent homes are four times more likely to be living in poverty. and children raised by single parents are three times more likely to end up in prison. 50% more likely to be poor as adults. so, maybe we should have a war against chaotic, irresponsible parents. but america will never launch that kind of war because it's too judgmental and deeply effects the minority precincts. therefore, cowardly politicians and race hursters continue to bear false witness that our economic system is at fault rather than bad personal decision making. talking points has exposed that ruiz before and will again. no matter how much money the government takes from the haves and gives to the have notes, poverty will not change until personal behavior does. addictive behavior, laziness, apathy will all override social justice programs. every child on this planet

can learn. but parents must drive the process by forcing the kids to perform in school. every american can can work hard, and if you do, you will make money. every american can practice self-respect, and if you do, people will hire you. but if you are dishonest, embrace intoxicate can'ts, conceive children you can't support. act in a crude, disrespectful way and generally believe that you are owed prosperity, poverty may welcome knocking. and all the president's men can't prevent that. and that's the memo. now for the top story tonight, reaction, joining us from washington, robert borough sage from the institute for america's future a progressive group. and dr. jeanne zano who teaches political science at iona college. i think i made a pretty persuasive and conclusive case and you say. >> i think you did. linden b. johnson talked about personal responsibility and he also talked about structure and

environment. we can all agree that personal responsibility is important. if you don't address the structural and economic issues, all the personal responsibility won't change anything. just as an example, i teach at a college. the cost of a college education which is necessary to get skilled workers out in the workforce has skyrocketed as you know. what are we going to do? you can be as responsible if you want, if you can't get that college education you don't have the skills you need. >> in new york you can go from preschool to college paying no money. you are aware of that right in the city does give poor people here a free ride throughout all the educational precincts. you teach at eye -- iona. that's a private college. they might not go there but i went to marist college and we played ionna in football. i went to a private college. >> i am a mother. when women in johnson's time there was about a quarter of women running households. now two thirds of women are making the money to run households yet, we are the

only industrialized country without a family leaf policy, a maternity leave policy, i should say or paid sick leave. these things are structural issues. personal responsibility is important but the policies have to keep up with the economic times and they have to keep up. >> poles i don't think anybody would have any -- shouldn't say anybody. targeted policies can help and so can safety nets. kids have got to be taken care of. but this massive nanny state that the progressives are touting in this country has led to record debt, no are than 17 trillion and all the stats that i just gave you the poverty rate is not really improved very much. despite all the spending. and you say? >> well, the debt, we have to go back to wall street blowing up the economy and doubling the debt. let's not blame that on poor people. on the. >> i'm not blaming it on poor people. why would i blame it on poor people? it's the government's fault. the government spends more money than it takes in. that's what it does and has done that for about three decades now.

okay? >> but when we hit the free in free fall, and the deficit went up to a trillion dollars under bush and then kinked under obama, to try to keep that economy from going back into a great depression, that was because wall street blew up the economy not because we had economy programs. >> does economy in a free fall lead to 41% out-of-wedlock birth rate? can you link that? are you linking that. >> i think personal responsibility point is an important one. it's important to look in the full scope. since the war on poverty was announced, people have gotten much more education. you know, head start, aid to poor schools, all that worked to some extent, so we went from 63% of people graduating from high school to about 88% of kids graduating from high school. so people are getting better education. when families are working longer hours, and putting more hours into the workforce, people are in many ways making good responsible decisions. they are having fewer children because they can't

afford them. and what happened to people, however, was something very different, which was it used to be that arising tide as john kennedy put it would lift all boats. but about the mid 70s, the tide kept rising but workers didn't share in it. the boats in the middle. >> because the competition from abroad and the high tech revolution -- >> -- it's a set of policies that we chose. >> the progressive -- the government has got to right all these wrongs in the private sector and go in and control and tax al-and all of that and make sure that everybody gets a certain amount. >> it's not a certain amount. but you have got to be able to create jobs that people can -- >> the government should guarantee a job. and that can't happen in a private economy. it just can't. >> bill, we don't have a problem of workers who are too lazy to work for the jobs. >> yes, we do. >> we have enormous underclass of too many jobs that don't offer good pay

for hard work. >> we have a problem of people who can't do the jobs that pay high. but we also have underclass that's in chaos go to detroit if you don't believe me. give you the last word, doctor. you see where i'm coming from here that mr. boroughsage is correct when he says it's tougher to make a good buck now, it is. because worldwide competition changing technology, you have got to get tech savvy, if you do acquire those skills you will live well. you must wise up. last word. >> i would just say that we need to have the jobs available for those skilled workers. >> guaranteed job? is that what you want. >> what about the earned income tax credit? >> we already have it? >> what about the free zones. there is a lot of good ideas that are out there to help create good jobs. i think it starts with education and i think it starts with giving people the skills they need and making sure the jobs are available. >> they have to accept them and some are not. >> if they go to marist or

big trouble for new jersey governor chris christie who may be run for president in 2013 knew about traffic sabotage coon that districted the governor's assertion. the story is about shutting down traffic lanes into the george washington bridge to punish a new jersey mayor who didn't support reelection. today the governor was conciliatory to apologize by the people of new jersey. i am responsible for what happened. i am sad to report people of new jersey that we fell short. ultimately, i i am responsible for what happens under my watch. the god and the bad.

>> the governor says he did not know there was sabotage going on and that his staff lied to him. now, the stories of national interest because christie is widely seen as a prominent public con ternd. the "new york times" as you see it there has been hammering him as a bully. that was the headline of editorial today. the bully has been duped. joining us now you from washington with analysis, laura ingraham. so, at his press conference today as you just heard, governor wanted to appear like a standup guy, he took responsibility. he did say listen, i didn't know. they lied to me. he fired the people who mislead him. and you see it how? bill i think two hours is a long press conference. he two d. probably the best he can do under these circumstances. what you look at now, right? is chris christie has to decide how is he going to handle it moving forward. there is going to be a national investigation. the commerce committee might be looking into this. clearly as you pointed out the media has the daggers

out for christie. it's obviously something good news for probably hillary clinton or whoever the democrats are going to nominate. there is also a story here though about what the republican establishment is doing in reacting to this. chris christie has made a lot of enemies. the romney people were lived after what happened with obama in the last days of the campaign. arms around obama. there are a lot of people very loyal to the bush legacy who would really like jeb bush to be the nominee. you see some interesting comments. some off-the-record comments in media accounts well, you know, he has really got to do something fast. you know, this can't confirm the stereotype of a bully governor. well, you know, look. christie has got to decide whether he is going to be a punching bag after this settles down over the next couple of days or if he he is going to right to the people with a positive message for growth and prosperity and all the rest are. he has to go around this media like reagan did if he is going to be successful. >> the bullying thing is interesting because i get

police union posted a video showing a small african-american boy wearing a diaper being abused by a man and a woman off camera. >> you are [bleep] he is throwing a fit right now [bleep] [bleep]. put that. >> ain't talking [bleep] suck my [bleep] >> that's a little child saying those terrible words. police say there was no crime committed in the video but here to analyze fox news anchor megyn kelly who is here after the factor. looks like child abuse to me. >> yes there is a crime. didn't see any crime on that. refer it to their child protective services now we learned late last night that that child along with three others has been taken into protective services custody and i'm telling you, bill, this is child abuse. it's child abuse. child abuse can be physical. and under nebraska law as in

there. i worry about them constantly, they're still in threat. i have family members in the military. when we first went over there the game plan was solid. we knew why we were over there, the game plan is different, you know that. i am not in, and frank ly this question is a little above my pay grade. but not knowing what the in-state is and just being over there. because the enemy doesn't care what we're doing over here. they're constantly trying to fight us. >> it is so emotional for you, because as you just pointed out. afghans did save your life. the taliban comes in and starts to persecute the people again. we tried our best. you know, same thing happens in iraq, al-qaeda is back. the movie is going to be a big hit as your book was. how involved were you? does it accurately portray what

you went through or did they hollywood it up a little bit? >> first of all, i was a consultant on the film. i was out there for probably 75 to 80% of it. as far as the representation of the real life story, we took it from real life and put it into a book. and from the book, the literal translation into a movie, and there will be stuff that gets dropped. but it is hollywood. the cast and crew did everything they possibly could to make sure they would stay to form. i didn't fall in love with the villager's daughter, anything like that. it is a war movie, sir, and pretty gruesome. >> so you were happy with the way hollywood treated the movie and the screen play and the way they conducted the film that it doesn't diminish the heroism that they showed in the theater. it is an intense movie, i mean, why should people put themselves

through it? >> that is a good question. it is a firsthand look at basically, the inside of a s.e.a.l. team and the reconnaissance, the daily things we go into, the bump and grind, and the daily areas that we deploy. we have soldiers, families, parents and kids. that not all afghan people are bad. first of all, most people think they're at war with afghanistan and that just kind of blows me away. the fact that every muslim is bad, just look at the villagers who saved my life. they're muslims, and there is a lot of good people over there. >> it is an education on the screen which will be exciting. there is one thing you didn't mention probably because you're too modest. it is an example of american heroism. now, you guys are all heroes.
