refreshing. that is that he took responsibility. and i think you know i have been kind of hard on chris christie. as a conservative i was not happy with the embrace of president obama a week before the election. i'm not happy with the economic record. i don't like some of his appointments. and chris christie did something that was really refreshing, went out it there, fired people, took responsibility. nobody has been fired for fast and furious. nobody has been fired with the nasa scandal or target-nsa scandal. rollout of obamacare even, greta. nobody has been held accountable. and i also like the fact that he left wiggle room. if there is an email that shows that he knew ahead of time or knew about this, he is probably finished. because he said he had no knowledge whatsoever. so, i find it refreshing, especially in light of years of hearing that it's bush's fault and fox news fault and sean hannity and greta van susteren's fault and talk radio's fault. i like what happened here.

>> what about the fact though that he someone had worked for him five years in his inner circle and i realize he can't be responsible for everybody that works for you. someone who is really close. he even had that incident in december where he sort of mocked the idea of this traffic jam being created. >> yeah, well i think at the time he mocked it he did so not knowing any of the facts here. look, i know a lot of people that have worked for you over the years. we have been colleagues and friends for a long time now, i have had many people work for me over the years and there are some people that turn out not to be the person that you thought they were. there are 65,000 people that work for the state of new jersey. that's a lot of people to be accountable for. the idea that he said they still work for me, i didn't know about it, and i'm going to fix it right now i thought was refreshing. i would like to get answers. you know, in benghazi we lost four brave americans, similarly with fast and furious we lost a brave border agent and many people in mexico died as well.

we gave guns to criminals, kidnappers, murderers and drug dealers. media get all behind up the way they did in this particular case spying on americans. or targeting conservatives. using the irs which is a huge abuse of power. but i will tell you one other thing, greta, as you mentioned the udal case in colorado. many identify not with the republican party or the democratic party but identify themselves as independent. there is a sense that we're being lied to. you like your plan, you keep your plan. it was a lie. you are not saving $2,500 a year. now they are trying to fix the books out in colorado. people are fed up. those unemployment numbers, you are reporting on on your show tonight, those are phony numbers. we don't count the chronically unemployed. the accounting they do in washington is totally dishonest. i know as a lawyer, there

would be people you would have to defend. cuffed, perp walk put in jail if they did the same accounting washington does. >> you mention independents. bulging numbers. more and more people seem to be moving to that area. in the next election, what will the republicans have to do. you have got to nab some of those independents. are we going to see immigration reform? how are you going to grab those independents, the republican party? >> look, i think that's a great question for this reason. because it's something i have been telling republicans to do for a long time. i love gretawire, you know, i have my web site hannity.com. i'm not really pro-moghtd it. but this week in particular, i started what i'm calling the conservative solution caucus. i don't think the answer is left or right. buff if we don't balance the budget. if we don't stop spending more money than we take in, we are literally robbing our kids and our grand kids of their future. so i have four solutions i laid out this week. i'm laying out a number more solutions next week. and we have got to balance

the budget. i like the penny plan, a balanced budget amendment. i think the real answer to our economic problems is energy. and that means drilling and fracking and coal mining and gas production in this country. i believe in term limits and i believe we have better answers to healthcare than obamacare. i think the party that gives answers is going to be the party that deserves to win. i think we have connickly high unemployment that is unnecessary. debts that are unnecessary. and i think the party that offers t going to be the one that wins. if it's the democratic party and they offer go solutions, i would support them. if it's the republican party i will support them. if it's nobody i will oppose them all. >> who should the american people sort of be watching? not that they are taking a side like for or against but who do you think are sort of the candidates who are going to emerge in the republican party when we narrow it down to three on each side? who for the republicans? >> talking about more 2016? >> 2016. >> look, i think you you are going to look at the

governors for sure. guys like bobby jindal, scott walker, wisconsin, i think that would probably make you happy. you have got a lot of good governors out there. i think we have got four senators, in particular, that i'm paying close attention to. ted cruz. rand paul, mike lee, i don't think mike lee would ever run. and marco rubio. but i think between the governors, and, you know, maybe governor nikki haley. she suspect for re-election this year susanna martinez is another rock star. we have got a lot of good people that i look at as conservative. i'm not looking for a republican. i'm looking for people that want to take bold distances and solve our problems. not people that want to play politics. >> all right. i know that you are not a big fan of president obama. so in 2016, what will be his biggest vulnerability that he leaves behind for the democratic party that the conservatives, republicans will seize on? what is the single most vulnerable point. >> the obvious answer i think, greta, would be the debt. he will double the debt.

he will accumulate more debt than every other president combined before him. and he said that trillion dollars in debt was irresponsible and unpatriotic. he is going to have to answer to that at some point. i think his biggest legacy on the negative side is going to be his lack of understanding in the middle east and literally helping iran move forward with the nuclear weapon program. not understanding radical islam in egypt and the entire region and not supporting our ally israel. i think that will be the biggest mistake that he has made in presidency. >> how did the republicans, the conservatives communicate that to most of the american people, those big issues, like about the middle east or about the debt? sort of concerned with like am i going to be able to keep my job or feed my kids or send them to school? those are big issues. >> you know, what bothers me, and this is a great question. it's almost like i can predict what the republicans are going to do this year. they are going it try and coast on the idea that

obamacare is going to get them there. you know, if you look at the two most successful errors for the conservative movement in this country is when they had bold ideas and they were able to communicate those ideas with passion and vision to the person people. that's ronald reagan, ronald reagan limited government, lowered taxes, limited the percentage of people's income that they can pay in taxes. he inspired people to the conservative agenda and he was a nice guy. you know, the second big movement in the conservative movement was newt gingrich and the contract with america. you elect us, we will do these ten things. brilliant, brilliant inspiring things that people can support. look, america knows they have made up their mind on barack obama. more and more people, i think, have come around to my way of thinking. i think i was a little ahead of the curve in 2007. some people were slow to get on board. they have made up their mind on him. the question is what are they going to offer that's different? and i think the party that says we're going to stop

2013 goes out with a whimper, certainly not a bang. grim news today that the economy added only 74,000 jobs in december. that's horrible. that's the weakest month for job growth in three years. and there is more. earlier today we spoke with a boss who knows all about jobs and hiring.

donald trump. donald. nice to talk to you. >> hi, greta. >> donald this morning i woke up and saw the unemployment level had dropped to 6.7% and i was absolutely ecstatic until i read further that for every job we added in december we lost five five left the work force. >> it is such an unfair number that 6.7 because as you know it's people that have given up looking for work, all of a sudden be they become essentially for purposes of numbers. they become employed it is such an outrage that they are allowed to use that number. as you know the numbers were terrible. because they thought many many people would be put to work and it was just the on sit. numbers terrible, artificial numbers because of what you just said. the actual unemployment is possibly 17%, greta it makes politicians look better. i'm not just talking about the president. makes them look a lot better. people give up looking for work and all of a sudden they don't count in the numbers. but even the biggest obama

fans and the biggest administration fans are saying these numbers are catastrophic. because the end result is very few people got jobs. >> at some point it's almost like being on a plane you get down so low to the ground there is no recovery. recover from a few bumps 36,000 feet. get down to 2,000 feet you can't take much. we are now getting to that point for a lot of americans, we are now down low to the ground. what in the world is going to happen? we can't keep adding only 74,000 jobs in december. and having the lowest proportion of people everybody thought we were going to be adding 300,000 plus jobs and they were expecting 300,000. that would have been a good number. and they were actually inspecting more than that the number came out at 74,000 or 78 thousand. a very very small number. and everybody was shocked. i was watching one of the business shows. they couldn't belief it thought it was a mistake.

despite that despite these horrific numbers. the unemployment goes from 7 to 6.7. because, again, people gave up looking for jobs. it's a very sad thing. >> whatever we are doing, i think it's now time to admit whatever we are doing just isn't working. at least some point. we have had such a terrible situation change gears. something different. some other plan. >> well, greta, i have within saying it for years. i have been on your show many times. you have to say i have been very consistent. we are not manufacturing things like in the good old days. we are buying products from china. you look at the chinese surplus. it's unbelievable. they are loaning us money. not only china, it's many countries. china would be, i would say the biggest abuser by far. you look at what's going on even in mexico now where mexico all of a sudden is really doing a great job and very much to our expense. so many different countries are smiling. and they are so happy because they are making our product and we are buying

the product and we're having tremendous deficits. but the bottom line is we are not doing jobs. >> all right. let me ask you about -- are you running for governor? i understand you are meeting with people or have met with people about running for governor of new york? >> a group of people, a great group, a big group of people over 50 just came in to my office. and i was very honored by it as you know, the state of new york is doing very very poorly. tremendous unemployment. tremendous, and the highest taxes in the united states. so, they are talking to me. and i have given them certain ideas and certain parameters it. and we will see what happens. but certainly it's something i'm considering and i will make a decision pretty much by the end of the month or early february. >> give me the odds sort of. 7 a% thinking of it or 25? give me a number. >> i think -- you know, i love the country and i love the state of new york. i see what's happening in new york and certainly with the country as we just discussed. that's the least of our problems in the country. but i see what's going on with the state of new york. and it's really a -- it's a very sad situation. >> so if i'm betting money,

what are the odds right now? >> think. >> what's the chance. >> if there is unity in the republican party, i would do it give me a number. >> 50/50 if we have to go with numbers. i want to see unity. the state is three to one democratic. it's not something that's so easy to do. if you do it, you have to do it right. but when you have sound bites that you are the number one taxed state in the nation, that's a bad sound bite if you happen to be incumbent governor. >> let's talk about numbers. how about the number 10 for the adis? >> well what do you mean by the number of 10? explain. >> have you been doing pretty well 10 years. >> 10 years and they just had the birthday the other day. and it's been an amazing show. number one show on television for eard poof time and it's been just an amazing show. and we're going to do another one. there are no laws, interestingly, if you run for federal office you can't

fallujah were key cities in 2004 when those horrific battles were fought by our soldiers and marines. now it's really about the region. the civil war in syria and with the collapse of government control and anbar province in iraq, what we see slowly but surely is the emergence of something that begins to appear like a sunni jihadist state. that's far more frightening than just sunni vs. she a inside iraq. and. >> i mean like here is the question. if we see this happening in iraq, is it almost -- i hate to ask this question but people think was it all for not. is there anything we can do to sort of reverse this? >> yeah. you know, it depends on who you talk to. i talk to senior officers. and interest them i hear principally a since of frustration. they look across the region not just in iraq but also in

syria, egypt, lebanon and elsewhere. and they see a sort of collapse of american presence. an amateur's approach to strategy. they see american military presence beginning to wane. but as you move down the chain and you talk to younger soldiers, you get a sense of anger and frustration. the fact that many of them had been wounded in fallujah or they saw their buddies bleed out and die in fallujah and now they see on television images of the very streets that they fought for now being ruled by sunni, islamist waving a black flag. it's very frustrating for them. >> should president obama be doing something or having done something? >>. no i asked one senior officer that. and he said to me, bob, it's over. he said once we broke contact in 2010, once we lost those special relationships with the iraqi army, those friendships that we had forged and the connections that -- remember, greta, for a long

singing very a very tone. >> i didn't know about it, but it's my responsibility because i'm the governor. i found this out at 8:50. by 9:00 this morning, bridget kelly was fired. by 7:00 yesterday evening, bill step was asked to leave my organization. that's swift action for a day's work. that's the way i'll continue to conduct myself if there's any other information surrounding this that comes up, or anything different that comes up over the course of the next four years. >> now back to president obama and his public statements after the irs targeting scandal broke. >> if in fact, irs personnel engaged in the kind of practices that have been reported on, and were intentionally targeting conservative groups, then that's outrageous. and there's no place for it.

>> and that have to be held fully accountable. now, that was in may. remember by july president obama started referring to these serious issues as phony scandals. joining us at political panel, amy walter, and bob cusack jim gerity. amy, overall crisis management by the two, compare and contrast. >> you have two very different people, of course. the issue for chris christie, he had very little choice. he had to come out yesterday and show that he was doing something about these people who wrote e-mails that all of us could see that said, i actually was responsible for shutting this down. that was understandable that he did that. but the other thing it shows too, is look, at the end of the day, they're going to be held accountable for the ultimate actions, not just for the press conference. so how is chris christie going to be perceived two months from now, versus how is he perceived

in the immediate after the press conference? same thing with president obama. he's gone through a series of difficult times during his presidency. this, the one thing that really has dented his popularity, more than anyone else was obamacare, and it was dented for the first time because what voters saw was which was somebody that they felt like they could no longer trust in the way they once did. >> i think that all presidents are loyal to a fault. this president is no exception. we had that with bush and rumsfeld. waited until after the election to fire him. i agree with amy, christie had to fire those aides. he just had to. there was no choice about it. did he do okay in that press conference? >> yes, if his story holds up. but to this point, it has. i think that a lot of democrats on capitol hill wanted at least

one head to roll, and it didn't happen. >> i want to credit christie, but i want to observe, doing better than obama in scandal management isn't really the highest bar to clear. it's become this very cliched textbook of what happens when you got caught, i'm just learning about this now, i'm as outraged as anyone. we're going to investigate and get back to you. kicking the can down the road, diverting accountability. christie didn't do that. having said that, his explanation is it's not my fault. i hired terrible people who are callous and mean and enjoy seeing kids in school buses stuck in traffic. when i asked them about it, they lied to me, what could i do about it? the initial response he had there -- >> and the story may not end it democrats have anything to do with it in new jersey. so this press conference will be one standard he'll be held to and a series of other public events where he'll have to

answer these questions. >> christie has to hope this is the only time those folks did something like this. >> the mayor came out and accepted his apology, but his opponent for his election campaign, she came out tossing punches. >> called him the head of a paramilitary organization. so that's the assessment from barbara buono. >> christie, no matter how he deals with it, he plays into the narrative that he's a bully. that's not the first time he's said, i'm not a bully. >> i thought that was an awkward thing to say. >> and the thing between christie and obama, they both say on a variety of scandals, obama's like, i didn't know. i didn't know. so in some way that innoculates you. how are you running your white house? you didn't know about the irs. the obamacare website was ssh's

>> amy thinks it took a couple weeks. >> bureaucracy. >> i mean, listen, i' think the client is at fault here. sebelius went on capitol hill blame me. obama said blame me. sebelius did point the finger at this contractor. but we were talking about tens of millions of dollars taxpayer money. >> tens of millions? i would be happy if we got off with tens of millions at this point. >> i think and now we are going to have lawsuits because now there is a lot of questions about the security of it. the administration says the security of the site is fine. you know, this obviously this story is just getting going. >> i imagine the administration cgi meeting like the dan snyder at the end of the redskins season keep you around for another year? no, no we are not. good luck to accenture trying to get into this. the administration is trying to cast more blame on the contractor what chois did they have?

suppose the obama administration say trying to blame cgi. keep you on for another two years. >> contract is up at the end of february how could you keep them? >> no person could say. >> governor christie could keep that woman more easily than president obama could keep cgi. >> christie don't blame me, i hired incompetent people. yes, we can blame you because you blamed incompetent people. >> the issue really and i know we have all been talking about this for some time, it's not about the web site. the web site's problems are the web site's problems and they may continue to be for some time. the real question for obamacare going forward is how it is impacting people, who currently have healthcare, who feel like they would like to keep the healthcare that they have. like to keep their doctor, like to keep how much they are paying for it are they adversely impacted? we are not going to see that immediately. between now and the end of this year, that is going to be the real test. not whether the web site. >> petty immediate moment.

that's the way i'm feeling right now. i do not believe they cannot tell us the demographics whether it's the young and healthy. i do not believe their computers can't do that and all this transparency stuff to be petty and snarky i don't like that. >> cost another 20 billion. >> that's why you had dozens of democrats today defecting on a bill that would provide more transparency and the administration was opposed to that bill and it passed the house. a lot of democrat defections over 60. that's the reason. you can't defend not giving out information. >> but how do they get away with it? >> well, i mean, you are calling him out? >> they don't even care. they don't care after the all. apparent live they don't care. >> they control the data. they control the information. >> but wouldn't you think you would be sort of embarrassed withholding that information? maybe they don't have it but i actually believe they do have it. >> but they have data about the demographics. >> i think they have the data. even if it's not perfect they could give us like ball park figures. >> that's the question at the state level ear
