tv Housecall FOX News January 12, 2014 1:30pm-2:01pm PST
1:30 pm
thanks again so much for joining me, and for next time, i hope you're learning to be more of a healthy you. it is time now for sunday house call. joining us is dr. mark siegel. he's associate professor of medicine at lambeau's medical center. >> and also with us, chairman and professor of urology, chief of robotic surgery, doctors good morning. you think i get a little too excited about this segment sunday house call? >> you're bringing a lot of medical news and i'll tell you all the fans and people that
1:31 pm
watch, they really take advantage of it. so it's good to be excited. >> the thing is i have learned so much from you, and i know eric has too. look at me. >> you're a good example. >> i was a really good patient, i followed all your orders and i feel really great. we're going to help you with everything, we even have whether you should worry coming up. first there is a warning of an outbreak of a drug resistant bacterial and it's been linked to a hospital in the chicago area, 40 people sickened so far. dr. siegel we hear about bacteria and infections in hospitals and is this occurring outside of hospitals as well? >> it's called cre, a big mouth full, but this resistant ba bacteria problem is huge. 2 million people have resistant infections and 23,000 died from resistant bacteria? how does bacteria get resistant?
1:32 pm
it's because we overuse antibiotics. the bacteria that's most fit survives. in hospitals we're not disinfecting enough. and a lot of this bacteria is growing on things like respirators, on catheters and it's eluding detection, so the cds and dr. friedman came up with a statement saying this is a nightmare bacteria, we need to detect, find it early, protect, take it and segregate it, let's have people wash their hands more, let's have things for disinfected. this was found in an ercp scope which is something we put into -- >> this is inexcusable that our hospitals would allow bacteria like that to grow. >> it grows on a scope that goes deep into the bowel and it was very, very hard to get off. and a particular kind of bacteria, this is the first time we have had this in the united states as a genetic abnormality
1:33 pm
that could spread to other bacter bacteria. here's another problem, in the or, david uses a gas to sterilize things, outside the or there's a problem, because there's very complicated issues of how to sterilize equipment. >> if this is an area where you have the pocket of infection in chicago, so this is not a systemic problem across the country, the way you are making it sound. there are issues and bacterial issues in the hospital. but for this particular news that we're talking about, it's in regal park in chicago. >> this is a supergerm? >> it's e. coli, there's a family of seven organisms, they're becoming smarter and smarter, they're looking at us throwing all those antibiotics a at us and they're saying i can battle you guys. healthy people should not be concerned about this, these are people that have been hospitalized in long-term facilities. people on ventillators, foley
1:34 pm
catheters, and you see everything is resistant except a couple of iv act bottled ticks, one is a big gun that we use, so the bugs are getting more resistant, we need to isolate this patient. first we need to recognize them. second we need to have contact isolation, so the hospitals have certain rooms that you and i cannot go or if you want to go, we have to glove up, put the gowns on, et cetera, and the truth is remove these devices, if somebody comes in with a catheter they don't need it, get them off the catheter, stop using all these knee-jerk antibiotics. >> how do you tell if it's sterilized correctly? >> when you go to someone's office, you got to pay attention to what's going on in the office. i have a great staff, sterilization is extremely important. so we use cidex which is the
1:35 pm
chemical we use to clean up equipment. now that they're sterilizing this in that pocket in chicago, this will disappear. >> they will get it under control, but i can't tell you how many people when they come into the office, if they see something suspicious, you go to the dental hygienist they put their hand in the glove and then their hand go sbosz the trash can. are you. >> you shouldn't be afraid to tell your doctor you're not being sterile. i just want to emphasize a point, it is only in very severe people, but it's also colonizing people that are healthy, so you may not get sick, but we can spread it that way. >> but let them open the sterile tray in front of you. not when you walk in and it already has been there. >> don't be afraid to ask.
1:36 pm
>> you've given us permission. >> you're not insulting them, you're protecting your health. >> doctors are warning that the improper use of some over the counter laxatives and they say could have some deadly consequences. laxatives can be deadly? >> so this is the news, and that's part of the reason why sunday house call is bringing you the latest news. fda this week made an announcement that the long-term use of laxatives actually can harm you. what they're saying is that you can only use these sodium phosphate laxative for only three days not more. the big thing here is really dehydration that we're talking about. but besides that, what i'm concerned about is all the electrolight changes that can happen, extra sodium, extra phosphate, this has resulted in kidney failure, heart failure.
1:37 pm
short-term you can use it, but long-term you don't want to be on this. this is a drug, even though we think it's just a laxative, over time it could be addictive. not the same as drugs, the tissue in the colon, they become hyper sensitive, you build tolerance, you need more laxatives. people have died from this and certainly if you have a chronic disease, you don't want to take this kind of laxative. >> how do you know if you're going to be in trouble with this? >> this is a good question. we have got bulking laxatives like metamucil out there, we have other laxatives that stimulate the colon like senicot. this is called an azmotic it literally draws water out,
1:38 pm
you're cyoit upsets your electrolite balance. we used to use this for:oscopy. now the problem is, how much can you use safely? they're saying, well, you can use 1.5 ounces, you can use a very small amount once a day. but people go and they get it over the counter, they use more than a small amount. >> it should come as a warning. >> there is a warning on it, but that's what fda wants you to do is to read the warning. the biggest question that -- besides the fluids and the fruits and vegetables and the fibers, which is simple, we got to find out what -- do you have hypothyroid, are you taking percocet or painkillers.
1:39 pm
if you're on iron, iron by itself can constitute pate you. some people think. >> how often should you go? >> there's no answer to that, folks out there, but you got to consult your physician, and the main issue is what's your change of pattern, because we looked at the colonoscopies of people who sudden -- exerci but a lot of people are sensitive to dairy and cheese. talk to your doctor. the fda wants you to read the instructions and do not treat yourself with these lacks tiffs.
1:40 pm
>> it's not an easy topic to talk about obviously on television, but so important. thank you. and we all know a person who's stubborn, and i'm not -- a person's refusal to go to the doctor over something they think is no big deal. let's say for for example leg pain. it could be something you should worry about. >> the first surgeon general's warnings over cigarettes telling us not to smoke. a lot of people have heeded the warnings, but have enough? we'll have our progress report coming up on sunday house call. a lot have quit but have enough? when you have diabetes like i do, getting the right nutrition isn't always easy. first, i want a way to help minimize my blood sugar spikes. then, a way to support heart health. ♪ and let's not forget immune support. ♪ but now i have new glucerna advance with three benefits in one. including carbsteady ultra to help minimize blood sugar spikes.
