2:05 pm
it is not a great day but christie was blaming the press for a nothing story but the press was right. >> the press was right and even in his disgrace he made a go case for the 19,000 cases, 680 of the words were "i" and many other "me." we use documents and did a search --. >> he was too self absorbed? >> even in defeat like this, he felt a certain self absorption. on this show two months ago we talk about the media swooning over chris christie and that is -- what is happening we were building him up and now was the chance to take him down. >> you set up the next question christie was the press' favorite republican especially on the east coast they like the pragmatic approach to conservative politicians and his personality.

>> let me tell you something, after you graduate from law school you conduct yourself like that in the courtroom your rear end will get lone in jail, idiot. >> that was an ex navy seal who challenged him at townhall. >> i would have to say in this fell niced atmosphere in which we exist today muscular guys, old fashioned tough guys run some risks. what i mean, men today have learned the lessons the hard way if you act like a guy's guy, you are in constant danger of saying something that will get you in trouble and make you look like a sexist or like you are a thug. that is the atmosphere he operates. this guy is an old fashion obtained muscular guy and there
2:08 pm
are political risks associated with that. >> we are used to blow dried candidates who don't say anything that is outside of what should be political speak and they have their harper picket and if you think about romney the image was so carefully crafted. >> they lose weight at re-election guy and chris city a big guy. who has lost weight. how much is too much? on wednesday, the day the mails surfaced, but the day before the news conference that went on before, msnbc was covering the story every eight minutes and cnn did a lot, fox news did very little the first day. your take? >> it follows the usual pattern. someone did a tally, two hours and 40 minutes on msnbc, two hours 20 minutes on cnn and 14 minutes on fox so i think fox realized they have underdone but when this happens and if

reverse, when a democrat is on the receiving end you will see maybe not that listen sided but you will see the mirror image of that occurring. >> a fox commentator wrote, mainstream media hyper ventilating over a traffic jam? >> that is dead wrong. this is why. that is a traffic jam. that is no ordinary traffic jam and that is no ordinary bridge. it was an on-ramp. when you think about the number of people in this country who have traversed the bridge, the busiest in the world, it is on -- part of the major north-south traffic artery of the east coast and millions of americans who have never lived anywhere near new york, new jersey or connecticut have been over that bridge and they remember it because it is so unpleasant on the best day and people read about this and they can remember the bridge and they can picture themselves stuck in a traffic jam because much of the time there is a traffic jam. my view is this is something

like the i.r.s. scandal for president obama: people can feel it. they can imagine it. they can feel if it doesn't affect them they can imagine it. >> there everyone the callous e-mails in the midst of this, i worked for the bergen record some time ago, eons a ago and it turns out it was old fashioned newspaper digging that, idea it open. >>burgen --bergen record gets commendation of the year. chris christie said it is not that big a deal just because the press writes about it. i know why it is. so do you. he said that as recently as december. the port authority chief stonewalled, said he was going to say something, then he wouldn't, and christie blamed the democrats in the beginning of december, and the port
2:11 pm
authority was silent and then we have this. it goes to the reporter who covered the port authority since 2011 for continuing to push and ticking with the story. >> if it is a democrat or republican, i am hearing a lot of chatter, what about the various obama scandals and the press' interest was not that much of a national story until the e-mails made it somebody and christie, by holding the entertaining two hour extravaganza provided a lost visuals to replay again and again and again, but is it fair to say 9 i.r.s. scandal should is gotten more coverage? >> the press love as scandal. the love of scandal is greater than any sort of ideological division. brit hit it in terms of why: people can understand the waiting in traffic thing, they can understand the i.r.s. thing and the website problem but to take benghazi, that is complicated and it is harder for

bob gates has gotten good press by the media so the media was stunned when "duty" came out with harsh criticism of president obama who kept him on from the bush cabinet but because of the confidential conversations that immediately became news. >> robert gates is harshly questioning president obama's leadership and commitment to the afghanistan war from the start of the surge he ordered. >> betrayal or act of emotion? if he was so seething and so angry, why did he stay?

>> is there something disturbing about a former presidential advisor revealing private connections? >> yes, obviously, whether it is to sell books or to tell the truth, it is a long book, there is a lot that is favorable, but there is a lost confidential conversations that the people in involved would have hat a seasonable expectation of privacy as described bird the supreme court and now they are revealed. something could be lost in terms of the candor with which the aides around a president are feeling they can be comfortable to speak. >> how can a president conduct war and peace sensitive conversation if he thinks people are gathering material for a best seller? >> and the other question, occurred to me immediately, if he felt this strongly and thought it was being managed this badly, and that the process
2:18 pm
was this dysfunctional, why did he stay on? look, toward the end of the bush years i knew from talking to him he was dying to leave, he stayed on very reluctantly. it is not surprising he had unmess an experience and what he suggests described why it was more unpleasant. manage is lost. >> i want to be clear --. >> i am not questioning the veracity. he has every right to speak his mind but the business of the private conversations and the criticisms he makes in the book he did not make at the time angry over the budget and how the we white house was stealing authority from pentagon, he has saved a lot of this for the tell-all. >> it seems poor form. he was a guy that was revered as fair and honor build. in his defense, the excerpts could be played more harshly
2:19 pm
that he intended. most of us have seen the excerpts, particularly of woodward's portrayal of that in my paper which sent the tone. he could be a little more on the one hand, on the other hand nuanced. >> it could be true but the idea of putting out excerpts is pretty old. >> it is boring. you read the book and the justy stuff is out there and you just have the "b" material out there. the p.r. has to choose but i am done with it. i don't want to reads the book. >> in fairness, although i saw gates as a guy because he worked for above republican and democrat, he is hardly the first to write such a become. >> george stephanopolis, paul o'neal, they have all done this, but my point, my question to you, does it affect the
2:20 pm
long-term reputation of the person who is being written about? i say "no." >> stephanopolis was going back to the clinton years and, rice, of course, in the wake of lewinsky, that bill clinton was not fit, and he was self deinstructive. >> bill clinton is an elder statesman and george stephanopolis is the "good morning america" anchor but it didn't really make a difference. it did the at the time and maybe others canning a again that but it doesn't now. >> >> ezra: it have the potential to tarnish a little bit gates' reputation. >> i think so. as much as on the question of whether he should have written the book at all at this stage, as on the question of why he stayed. the question of whether he should have written the book doesn't go to veracity. the question of why he stays, goes to his character.
2:21 pm
the book says he came close to quitting. but he didn't. that question hangs in the air. >> naturally, the press has pounced on the stories such as hillary clinton according to gates saying in a private conversation, she opposed the bush surge in iraq in 2007 because of the presidential campaign show was to mount and that will keep coming up in her presidential campaign like christie's bridge. >> is it a public service? >> he did himself a disservice but all information to get out there --. >> the truth of the matter is, there is no real contradiction between the questions that go to whether the president can expect candid advise and the fact that the public is served by having this information about the president which is backed by certain facts the way the president did things particularly in afghanistan and he was half hearted.
