2010, we're moving ahead, doing a good job, accomplishing what we let out to do. i think behind the scenes, he was worried that it wasn't working in large groups as well as face to face. >> not only was the president unsure about his decision to send 30 thoushs troops into harm's way, robert gates told his suspicion about the military leaders running the war. >> i always had the feeling that he was suspicious of their motives. and second, time spent with them was an obligation rather than something he enjoyed. >> unfortunately, the jaw-droppers don't stop there. what do you think about this admission that president obama is telling the public everything is going great, we're doing a good job, getting results, and behind closed doors, he has this apprehension. he doesn't want to be there. i can see why he wouldn't want

to slam the mission with men and women in harm's way. if he was so against it, why didn't he pull them out? >> i'm not sure. he added 30,000 more troops. bob gates says he wasn't sure of the mission and he didn't trust the leaders. president obama wasn't sure that the leaders were carrying out the mission properly. he was completely insecure in some of the things that -- the shots he was calling. you're going to tell me at the if you're on the front line right now, forget then, right now. you're wondering if this commander in chief is convinced he's doing the right thing. whether these people on the front line are, in fact, representing the united states of america. if i'm a parent of a kid over there right now, i'm going, wow, define this mission, get in get out and before you do fig else, you better be sure about the next move. >> that's ridiculous. >> which part? >> all of it. >> why?

>> who sends in troops in a mission like that and doesn't have second thoughts about it? doesn't think about it every day? wonder if it was the right decision to make. i bet you george bush did too. this is gates saying he had this feeling about obama and the chiefs. a feeling doesn't sell me on anything. dpl you really think george bush wasn't sure about his mission? >> i think every day he asked himself if he did the right thing. >> everyone does that. you don't stand in front of the secretary of defense and -- was she secretary of state at the time, hillary clinton? >> she was. >> and say i'm not sure about this. >> he said he had concerns about it. >> bob, he did run on afghanistan being the good war. that was part of his whole strategy. he went after george bush for iraq and argued that we should be in afghanistan. is this so explosive, greg? president obama was never the

pro-war guy. i'm just wondering why do it at all? why continue with a war if you're not swres interested in war? >> a lot of it has to do with the fact that people don't trust you. president obama was suspicious of the military. it's a two-way street obama has viewed american power as a flaw, not a benefit. it's like putting peta in charge of mcdonald's. bob, you're going to get angry about this. when your president had a friend who planned to bomb a military officer's dance at ft. dix, you sure as hell can't trust him. gates was kept as a chaperone for the most awkward blind date ever. between president obama and our troops. >> who are you talking about? >> bill ayers.

>> he was -- >> how do you trust somebody that believes in that? >> you shouldn't. birds of a feather flock together. >> i have never heard that. >> with who you associate yourself with. who do you agree with. who are you like-minded with. the military would do well at that point to distrust him. he had distrust of anybody at the command level or not? >> didn't he ask gates to stay on. >> you're making a very -- you're making a very important point. not only did he ask gates to stay on. remember when president obama said he was going to close gitmo? he was going to change the way we fight the war on terror. >> i wish he had. >> he got in office and realized, hey, he can't change it. he better keep the infrastructure that george bush put into place or we'll open ourselves up to huge risks. >> necessity, right?

>> the president would prefer to spend his time remaking the domestic agenda. the military is like a chore you would have to do where you would rather play football or watch football. i agree with bob, it's okay to worry about these missions. it's when the worry hinders your ability to articulate goals of galvanize troops. he can rally students. he can't rally soldiers. >> he asked gates to stay on. gates said there were unfom fortable moments in the situation room when obama's team began to mock his predecessor. >> h admiral mull and i used to joke, particularly in the first months of the obama administration, every meeting, everyone would trash the bush administration. the bush team, what a bunch of bums the bush team were and we're sitting there thinking,

are we invisible? we were integral members of the team. >> the administration continued with a lot of president bush's procedures and protocols. >> they did. and i'm sorry they did. but that's one voice. this was inexcusable to dump on bush in front of those two. somebody had a lack of judgment on that. >> what about arrogance? >> you could call it that. but just as matter of course, you don't have two people in the room that are an integral part of the last team and dump on them. it's insulting. >> no class. >> i'll take gates at his word that that is what happened. i don't know any president that likes war. who likes war? >> maybe needing war as a necessity to get things done instead of just sitting back and, oh, i don't know, letting the terrorists rule the world. should gates have spoken up, eric? he's out here, he puts out this

book, but as i understand it, he never stopped and spoke up and said, you know what, i don't want this. as he offered his resignation, the president asked him to stay. i see a lot of in-fighting. i read the book and don't see a lot of goals or strategy that he laid out on how to win? >> you mean gates himself? >> yeah. >> the guy was like a -- look, he was secretary of defense. the top defender of the country, right? he -- acted the way he would probably want everyone up and down the chain of command to act. you don't question the superior. you don't call him out. you wait until you're done. my question is the timing of it. could he have waited a little bit longer until president obama was out of office? >> following that logic, like somebody in the military today, while the war is going on, a general saying this was a lousy idea and i can't stand this other guy. it doesn't make sense. why gates did this now makes no

sense to me. >> to that point, there might not be people in the government saying that, but people in the media, greg, we talked about this yesterday. talking about war, specifically a writer at is alon.com going after the move i have "loan survivor." the lone survivor himself was on the kelly fils. >> i sat and thought about pro war for awhile. is that a real term? there is nothing glorious about war. there is not. nothing glorious about holding your friends in your arms and watching them die. nothing glorious about having to leave your home for six to eight months wile your family is back here and you're away. the bottom line is there's bad people everywhere. every now and again, we have to step to them to make sure that we preserve our way of life. and, it -- it's people like -- my teammates and i that have to do that. and the men and women in the

military. there is nothing glorious about it. nothing pro-war. nobody wants war. >> what do you think? >> well, you know, no one -- no one goes to see a movie like "lone survivor" and saying hooray for war. it's like going to see "the tie t -- titanic" and says, yeah, is bergs. >> the left, there's some liberal bloggers calling it pro-war propaganda. it's insulting. marcus latrell points out, you do your job. they don't want to be there. they have a patriotic duty. they're fulfilling the duty. it's insulting to say that this stuff is pro-war propaganda. >> this is what we said last night. was that because you missed me so much that you had to fill me?
