polar vortex, folks are dealing with the madness again. at least one death in the state of maryland has been blamed from the snowstorm. a driver fishtailed and went into the path of a tractor-trailer, unfortunately. but really the same story across the country. take a listen to one commuter in ohio who has been dealing with all of this. >> i was coming up the road here and a car cut in front of me, i had to tap my brakes and slowed me into the wall. pretty snowy, pretty slick. >> states of emergency do remain in effect in new jersey for the entire state and parts of new york. governor is warning folks to stay off the roadways if at all possible. as far as flight cancellations, 1500 today alone i'm told and 2200 delays. certainly check with your airlines before heading to the airport. back to you. >> anna kooiman live in central park where they set a new record for the amount of snow received.

thank you very much. it's going to be cold and frost as far south as the panhandle of florida. >> let's talk about winter somewhere else. that's in sochi, russia. we know that one big story that we always hear before major events from the new york marathon to the super bowl which will be happening here in a week. security. most people's eyes roll over. it's a thing you're not supposed to see but you should know it's there and keep your fingers crossed nothing happens. when it comes to sochi, the more people talk about this in the know, the more i get the sense that safety can't be assured and vladimir putin has too much power in his hands when it comes to making sure our athletes and the international community is secure because he decided to have it in sochi, it's an area bordering the caucus regions which is less than settled. offensive measure after the two terror attacks last week, he's now got his troops surging into that area in the dagestan region trying to stop the terror

attacks before they would be happening and that's where the threats are coming from. >> they had an active day certainly yesterday and then fears monday were mounting after reports of a search for black widow and possibly other women reported to be threatening attacks and then the video of the two men that came out taking credit as they did for killing 34 people earlier in the month. >> and more threats after that saying the worst is yet to come. >> if you're awe tourist or there for the games, right. >> a surprise package for you one of the suicide bombers said. that's the setting. what's going on? well, the president of the united states talked to vladimir putin yesterday on the phone. two and a half weeks before the olympics. what's interesting is the white house reported that the two talked about the olympics, but the kremlin did not. simply said that they talked about what's going on in syria. meanwhile, we understand this morning it's breaking moments ago, apparently the teams from

slovenia and hungary have received some sort of threat. that's the background. and have we heard from, for instance, the president of the united states saying we can guarantee things are going to be secure there, no. aside from inside the olympic village, which really is going to be tightly secured, the rest of the area is a gigantic question mark. lieutenant colonel ralph peters was on last night and has this to say about sochi and putin. >> putting the olympics and sochi in really this terrorist heartland was an act of incredible arrogance and putin may get his comeuppance in that area. the russians have been fighting the islamist extremist for hundreds of years. this is going to be ugly. >> now the u.s. and russia opened up discussions about us giving them or letting them use our sophisticated electronic

devices that were effective in thwarting the ied attacks we were able to pioneer and engineer in afghanistan and iraq. number one, we lend it to them, great. number two, russia would have the opportunity to keep that technology which is something they didn't earn in terms of our friendship. >> or we could operate it. the deal is we would operate it. >> i hope so. now the big question is if you're an athlete, the family of an athlete how do you feel about competing in the games you trained your whole life to compete in? >> especially since the u.s. has some control in terms of getting in there, but would ultimately have to be asked by russia, should anything serious happen to actually get in there in terms of military procedure, and help. but athletes are concerned. they do say, though, that the olympic committee says they're fine, you remain as close to the village as possible. one athlete, 29-year-old tucker fredericks, he's a speed skater. his family has gone to the olympics before with him.

he actually requested at 29 years old that they stay home. his wife, mom, dad not come not because he felt not safe himself. he just didn't want to have to be concerned about their safety for the first time though, this is happening. we imagine not being able to go watch your son, your husband compete. he has asked them to remain home in fear for their safety. >> right. because of the way the venues are set up, there are going to be two clusters, one with the ice sports right along the coast and then the skiing and the sledding that's going to be up in the mountains which will be much harder to control. you know what, we're two and a half weeks out. we'll keep you posted. this is shocking. there's a permanent democrat, a civil rights leader down in south carolina. extraordinarily, martin luther king holiday he said this about the first senator, black senator from south carolina since reconstruction. i'm talking about tim cot.

>> you know, he maintains such composure facing such hateful remarks from the other -- he said, "instead of i will honor the memory of dr. king rather than truly firing back and being proactive and holding the door for others and serving my fellow man. reverend barber will remind me and others of what not to do. to his credit, the senator has been working hard to really give a voice to those who are unemployed, provide alternatives when it comes to employment and really closing this gap story in terms of income inequality that's being put out there by the administration. he's working hard to really get things changed in a way that would work. what is he met with? discrimination for his own beliefs. >> the president, from time to time, weighed in on issues like this. he's been really strong. i would love to see the president weigh in on this, saying i saw disappointing comments that came out about a u.s. senator. i hope this thing stopped at the water's edge. >> i would be shocked if he did.

different political parties, maybe. that's the way it is. meanwhile, she's been off the set for a bit. let's look at the news. there's a big development to talk about taking place in west virginia. the victims of the chemical spill may not get any money, but the company responsible for it, freedom industries, getting $4 million to keep its doors open. this is all a part of a bankruptcy deal. that spilled contaminated water in west virginia. we'll keep watching that one. dramatic new video into fox news of a deadly plane crash in aspen, colorado. this is surveillance footage from january 5th. it shows the plane hitting the runway and then bursting into flames. one of the three pilots on board was killed. a preliminary report found that high wind gusts of almost 30 miles per hour may have caused that crash. before the denver broncos take on the seattle seahawks at the super bowl, fans will be serenaded by opera singer sara

well, it's easy to assume that the rich inherit their money without earning it. in reality, under 15% of top income earners inherit their wealth, while more than 40% of lower income earners inherit theirs. >> how does the rich really make their money? how do they do it today and in the past? by hard work is the conclusion. four times the amount of full-time workers than poorer households. here to break down the numbers with the national review is correspondent kevin williamson. kevin, you discovered that the rich are actually more hard workers than inheritors?

>> well, yeah. they tend to be employed in high numbers. if you look at wealthy households, they're almost exclusively made up of married couples who both work full-time. the poorest 20% of households have fewer than one half of full-time worker per household on americans. rich americans inherit about 15% of their wealth and the rest is earned income. >> how is the notion sustained then that if you're rich, you're sitting on money not earning, lazy in fact, just sort of rolling in cash? >> sure. if your political agenda is to loot a certain segment of the population, it's easy to do that if you can convince the world they haven't earned their money. >> not their fault. >> we don't really want to tax people who have earned their money very much. but when it comes to people who have inherited, unearned income, it's easier to do it. the left and the democrats tend to cultivate this falsehood. >> the characterization of children of privilege, inherited

a fortune, shuttling between mansions is really from the minds like elizabeth warren and robert reich. do you think they're hurting the cause of american society? >> i think they're misleading the american economy. what's really driving inequality isn't so much inherited money. it's marriage. compared to say the 1950s, a wealthy man is more likely to be married to a high income woman than back then. if you make $100,000 a year, $200,000, very likely you have a spouse in roughly the same income bracket. that's driven a lot of the difference in income and net worth. >> so you are -- what we found too from your study here, the highest income earners only 13% of them are not working. >> yeah. they tend to be employed and very, very high numbers. that's the main difference between high income households and low income households is that high income households are made up of people in full-time jobs. this isn't to say that people on the other spectrum are lazy. it's to say the job market

across parts of new york, pennsylvania, up into new jersey. philadelphia, you set a record. 13.5 inches of snow. little ferry, new jersey, 13.4 inches of snow. you can see baltimore, maryland, delaware, connecticut, picking up significant snowfall accumulations out there. guess what? it's still snowing in long island and southeastern parts of new england. so that snow still coming down out here. we'll continue to see the updated totals from these areas. the wind a major concern in parts of the cape where we have a blizzard warning. we've actually had gusts reported to be over 40 miles per hour. windchill temperatures, the combination of a strong winds and the cold temperatures in places, producing these dangerously cold windchills across new england and the midwest. look at chicago. it currently feels like 10 degrees below zero in boston 10 degrees below and fargo dangerously cold, 24 degrees below zero. single digits below zero down to

increased movement for marriage education, but i think maybe we could find some creative ways for local and state governments to reward that education. >> do you think it would be a hurdle for couples to get married, which is something that bonds people? linda, do you feel this is a hurdle or something that would actually help marriage? >> i think it's clearly something that will help marriage. government has a stake in marriage succeeding. the cost of breakup and divorce is often borne by the government because there is a loss of income and particularly when children are involved, the government can end up holding the bag to the tune of some estimates are $150 billion a year spent to take care of children who are the products of either divorce or unwed births. so government has a stake in this. we require, when you get a license to paint toenails, that you have to undergo some education. you have to undergo a license to drive, requires you learn the

techniques of driving and some states, young people are required to actually take courses. so i think putting the emphasis on making sure the people have relationship skills, that they've learned to talk to each other about things like finances and whether or not they want to have children, those are very important and it's better that that takes place before marriage than to wait until after the marriage starts to fall apart. >> there are many people who would feel the government should not be deciding whether they have a strong relationship. we've had situations in the past where they say don't define my relationship or marriage. you tonight know what kind of spouse i will be. sheila, do you think that's the government's business to do this? this course is really an hour's log. it's not a pass-fail. >> we were behind the taxpayer cost for divorce and -- i'm verned about the cost that our government is bearing.

yesterday was a rotten weather day. we established new records for snowfall in portions of new jersey and new york and right now it is 6 degrees and that's where we find maria molina braving the cold. >> good morning. i want to show you some of these snowfall totals 'cause portions of new jersey, like you mentioned, did receive record snowfall. take a look at this particular city out here. 15.8 inches of snow. parts of massachusetts already reporting 15 inches of snow and counting because it's still snowing across parts of pennsylvania. the snow totals really piling up with many areas looking at totals exceeding a foot. you can see that snow still coming down early today across parts of long island. it's starting to wrap up and end there. but parts of the cape still being hammered by very heavy snow and also some strong winds where reporting gusts of over 40 miles an hour in cities like

the state? no one else can. an 18-month-old can't speak for itself. that's the issue we're facing. >> there is an advocacy element here that someone -- there are laws designed to protect children in the car specifically in terms of car seats. is this something that should specifically be legislative? is this a law that should actually state in terms of leaving children in a car up to the age of 18? >> they have a child endangerment statute that encompasses all of that. >> ashley, what are your thoughts? >> i just think that's excessive because in this case she was arrested and prosecuted. but then they went beyond that and they put her on this child abuse registry. the problem with the opinion was they never gave her an evidentiary hearing. they never allowed her the opportunity to bring in her own evidence to show she wasn't a bad mom and she didn't belong on this registry. the problem is the law is absolute. if you are arrested for x, you

are going to be on this child abuse registry. the state really can be using its resources to protect children that actually are in need, where the evidence was that this was a good mother, that this was a lapse in judgment -- >> i don't know if we know what the evidence is. i don't know that we know what her past history was and what it wasn't. but unfortunately, sometimes things have to be like that to protect all children. >> do you think past history should be excluded or the age of a child? does this include children up to the age of 18? i believe how it was stated. is that too old? >> that's too old and the law is too broad. >> the judge also has discretions in cases like this, where weather a judge will determine based on the age of a child, the circumstances, the history of the mother and other children what, exactly happened in this case. that's usually how a judge will take -- they have discretion on the sentencing and on even applying the law to a specific instance. >> rebecca -- >> there is a reason the law

let's talk about the winter olympics. they're going to open up in a couple of weeks. we've been telling but the security concerns. remember, sochi, russia is in an area where terrorism is not uncommon and we told you yesterday about how the alert is. they're looking for a number of so-called black widows, women who have lost their husbands and now they feel like as revenge, they're going to try to blow themselves up and a bunch of tourists or athletes at the olympics. the president of the united states talked to the president of russia yesterday about how to keep things safe. also it sounds like the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff spoke to his counterpart. russia apparently is reaching out. they would like to use our technology that we developed in iraq and afghanistan to handle ieds along the road. they would like to use the equipment. it sounds like if it is requested, our guys would run it for them. >> here is the thing, when you see our lead law makers who know the most about intelligence and

snow. he drives right onto the sidewalk, almost taking out some people who were walking along. but he had to get somewhere, it looks like. >> yikes. you can expect more of this today around the country as freezing temperatures roll in. maria molina is standing by with the latest on the forecast. >> she's got a hat now. it must be cold. >> yes. it's getting cold out here. the wind really gusting hard. we have actually seen some reports of wind gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour across southeastern massachusetts throughout the morning hours. an update. some of those snow totals, plymouth county in massachusetts actually already reporting at least 18 inches of snow and it is still snowing out there. take a look at some of these other incredible totals. parts of new jersey picking up over 15 inches of snow. in parts of new york, 13 inches of snow. you can see here on the radar, most of the snow over with across portions of new jersey, new york city has been over with for hours. the wind still a major issue. gusting to 20, 30 miles an hour.

they're symptomatic things happening. disobedience, bullying, aggression, dropping out of school, depression, suicide, drugs being given over and over again because a child can't function. we're dealing with a.d.d., which literally we call it a.d.d., but it's an inability to focus. so we have to look at what are the systemic reasons why? what are the problems? these are symptoms. you can't keep treating the symptoms. >> great point. >> we're treating the problem. >> i was actually reading about a high school specifically that cut down their suspensions significantly after implementing meditation program. so that's a great thing that you're championing there. >> it is. i want to clarify that we have brain breaks informed our classrooms -- inside of our classrooms. we teach neural biology. we teach kids about context to their emotions. they learn how their brain works. when they quiet their mind three times a day, you can call it
