♪ >> good morning. you are watching "fox & friends first". i am heather childers. >> i am ainsley earhardt. thank you so much for waking up us this morning. more than 600 cruise ship passengers violently ill just k days into a dream vacation. that vacation now over as the royal caribbean cruise ship is heading back to new jersey two-days early. the explorer of the seas expected to arrive on wednesday. they are trying to determine the source of that fast spreading stomach bug. they boarded the seas. >> they immediately quarantined every sick person and put a lock down on food and are constantly dreeni cleaning everything. it is using cleaning products

and disinfectants known to kill the norovirus. royal caribbean releasing this statement we think theg to do ie early. we are taking several steps to compensate them for their inconvenience. >> two firefighters killed battling aast moving apartment fire in ohio. they became disoriented and trapped inside the building. fellow firefighters were able to remove them and rush them to the hospital but it was too late. 16 year veteran steven and rookie firefighter james dickman died in that fire. the two deaths marking the first firefighter fatalities in toledo in nearly 35 years. >> a drone strike hitsal shabab terrorist in somalia. it star getted a senior al-shabaab terrorist. it reportedly hit a vehicle.

not confirming who was killed in the attack. it is the latest in a surge of military action in the region. they attempted to take down a key al ba-shabaab member but hao pull back in that mission. >> today shoppers will be allowed back inside that maryland mall where a shooting left three people dead. this after police say they are learning more about the 19-year-old gunman. they have no answers. kelly wright following that story for us this morning. he joins us with the latest. good morning, kelly. >> the columbia mall will reopen today at 1:00 p.m. it will have two memorial sites to remember the two memorials killed during saturday's shooting. those living near the mall are still realing from this. they now know how three people died, they know who they are but they don't know why it happened.

no one knows ex why darien agalar opened fire on briana and 20-year-old tyler johnson as they worked inside a store. after killing them he turned to himself took the gun on himself and took his own life. police are searching for answers trying to determine why. >> we did search and seizure warrant at the house. we did retrieve documents as well as computers and other evidence. we are working through those. there is a journal. he does express general unhappiness with his life. >> some reports speculating a romantic link may be the motive but for now there is no evidence of that. ken you willman says the shooting huaffected a lot of lives. he adds they may never get back

9 school students battling teachers. the plaintiffs say it ep couldn'ts bad teachers in the classroom and hurt the quality of education. the case filed on behalf of the students and their families by a group called students matter. unions are fighting back, though, arguing that weekened protections unfairly target older teachers. >> state department has new terror warnings about the olympic games in so muchi. >> one detail that stands out in the state department's latest warning for americans visiting sochi is the part that urges extra vigilance when using mass transit. now a chairman of the homeland security committee is worried that soft targets are exposed.

they returned from a two-year trip and the world and they are not suspecting foul play after the woman vanishes. a wam in pennsylvania. the 19-year-old being held on 500,000 dollars on bail. a local paper said he is a penn state student. police rided his home on a tip he was dealing drugs. they quickly learned the 19-year-old was hiding a bomb with chemicals fuses and compressed air. it was hidden inside a suitcase. he is due in court february 5th. >> nsa leaker edward snowden

violently ill days into a dream vacation as the royal caribbean cruise ship heads back two-days early. tests underway to determine the source of the fast spreading stomach bug. a passenger from connecticut tweeted this. they immediately quarantined every sick person and put a lock down on food and are constantly cleaning everything. royal caribbean says it is using cleaning products and disinfectants to kill the norovirus. >> two firefighters killed battling a fast moving apartment fire in ohio. they became disoriented and trapped inside the building. some of the firefighters removed them and rushed them to the hospital but it was too late.

will americans be safe in sochi? issuing new terror alerts warning athletes and spectators to be on alert at all times. doug luzader is live with more on that and what they are demanding in russia in the weeks leading up to the games. >> russian officials are flooding the zone when it comes to preparing for these games. even the ring of seals they have said to fill around sochi it may not be enough given the volatility of the region. they issued an updated travel warning for those who intend to visit sochi. there are no indications they are being specifically targeted but given the news including the search for those black widow bombers even the u.s. congressman who was recently there said it is difficult to say whether the games are safe to attend. >> if we do not support our team

i am very, very angry about to this day. it made me angry because there was this perception that for some reason jay had decided to give up the show. it was like he gave the show to conan and then he took it back. this was not what happened. that was not what happened. >> leno says this time around things are very different and ultimately he understands nbc's decision. >> i really like jimmy fallon. i think he is terrific. when i see him do a dance number with justin timberlake i go, i can't do that. i think after a while, you know, i am not going to be that up on the latest justin bieber records when he is 64 or whatever it might be. >> as for what's next with leno he would like to stay in comedy but has no plans to do another late night show.

of the u.s. households that rely on food stamps. this is a shift from a year ago. the data by the university of kentucky with the associated press since 2009 have been adults aged 18 to 59. the nutrition assistance program covers now one in 7 americans. take a look at the data. full-time workers make up 17 percent of food stamp participants the fattest groce since 1980. the unemployed make up 53 percent of participants which has overall unchanged. this trenchd is due to demographics. many relying on low wage or part-time work that plays a major role. stagnant wages plus low wage and high skilled jobs are also
