tv   Shepard Smith Reporting  FOX News  January 28, 2014 12:00pm-1:01pm PST

12:00 pm
something really unforgivable for me to do that in public. jill, that's one way to let the world know you're available for hire. she'll likely score big because of it. all right. thanks for your thoughts coming in. thanks for being part of the real story. i'm gretchen carlson. shepard reporting live now. folks in the south, freezing and dangerous temperatures. we're going to hear the trouble it's causing. plus a young woman accused of murder in the first degree for beating to death her former boss. ahead, how cops tracked her hundreds of miles and why her family says there's no way she could have committed the crime. let's get to it. >> now, shepard smith reporting live from capitol hill. good afternoon, from the russell rotunda in the united states capitol. we're hours away from president obama's state of the union address. i'm here to cover that on the fox forecast network tonight. not here on this channel, but at the one down there where you'll see football on sunday. i'll be there doing the president's speech tonight. the reason i really come is because they invite the anchors to only to lunch with the president every year.
12:01 pm
doesn't matter who the president is. when it was george bush, when it was president george bush, now it's barack obama. go with barack obama. the one thing that is constant, there's no better food on planet earth than what comes out of that white house kitchen. i don't know how they do it. during this hour and this every hour this time of year every year, i go through in chapter and verse what we had for lunch at the white house. here's a sneak preview. don't get a screen cap of that. i want it to be a surprise. i'll let you know as a tease of all this, i did have to google three different things to know what was on my lunch men withdrew. three different things were googled. i found out the answer. wick pekipedia is not a source all journalists, especially the ones who work for me, i used wikipedia for these things today because it doesn't matter. we'll show you what we had for lunch at the white house and how much wine we drank. biggest speech of the year given before all of congress and all of the viewers at home. the president is expected to outline a year of action and
12:02 pm
ambitious agenda for 2014. his aides say the speech will by after the ding opportunity recession. the president plans to use executive powers where he can to get around the gridlock in ch k congress. going to order a hiking of the minimum wage according to aides for government contract workers. republicans are warning the president, don't push the limits of your authority. something we could hear a lot about in today's republican response. the gop has chosen congresswoman cathie mcmorris rogers to deliver the party's rebuttal after the president's speech tonight. we'll have full coverage and break it down in the coming hour with fox news sunday's chris wallace and members of congress from both sides of the political aisle. millions of folks in the deep south are facing winter weather. a friend of mine sent me a picture, a screen cap of the weather, temperature in oxford, where it's 18. same as the speed limit.
12:03 pm
eli and r.g.'s number. that's the speed limit. it was simultaneously 18 in washington. it's cold. you can go back. i'm going to read every single word after we finish the ad libbing. set to blanket the region with snow and freezing rain. includes the gulf coast, parts of georgia, carolinas and virginia. of course, it's unusually cold. some forecasters say areas could get as much as a foot of snow. for yankees, that might not seem so bad. remember, cities and towns in the south have very few. cities and towns in the south have very few. they really do. salt trucks and plows. drivers there say that they are just not use to this type of weather. you don't have to attribute that to the driver. just say it. governors of louisiana and alabama declared states of emergency. many schools across the south closed or sent kids home early. meantime the snow and ice grounded more than 3,000 flights. forecasters say the storm will last through tomorrow morning. you can sit around the tv and watch the president give the state of the union address tonight. they also say the south sees
12:04 pm
weather like this only about once a decade. sometimes in spots here and there, but not widespread like this. john works the atlanta newsroom for us. you're in montgomery, alabama, this afternoon. you look cold, sir. >> reporter: i'm cold, indeed. i'm a southerner. i don't know how to dress for this type of thing. it's 25 degrees now and we're experiencing heavy sleet in montgomery, alabama. county commissioner came up and told us that at 3:00 local time, that's about an hour from now, they're going to shut down all of the county roads here in montgomery county, alabama. they just don't have the equipment to keep all of the roads open during a heavy winter storm. that's pretty much the case for every community throughout the southeast here. take a look at this video from harrelson county. see traffic problems in georgia. also we're hearing from folks in metro atlanta there was enough uncertainty in the forecast today that many schools were still in session. many people went to work. then as soon as they started
12:05 pm
seeing heavy snowfall, everyone tried to get home at the same time, causing major traffic gridlock. there were also slippery roads reported as far south as austin, texas, and in houston, nasa's johnson space center closed today to keep employees off the roads. but it is staffing its mission control. someone's got to stay in contact with the international space station, after all, shep. >> you mentioned people going home. that's exactly what happened in new york last week when we got our foot of snow. they didn't cancel the schools. offices didn't tell people, don't come to work. all of a sudden it's snowing like the end of the earth and had this early rush hour that happened 2:00 in the afternoon and it was a disaster. sounds like that's happening all over the south. >> reporter: yeah, you know, people are not prepared to deal with it as far as the traffic. they seem surprised. they get stuck in traffic as soon as the bridges start icing. as far as stocking up on supplies, they're doing a great job of that. we went out to a local supermarket this morning. supermarkets had to restock
12:06 pm
their shelves of bread and milk three times just this morning. that's how high they were in demand. now, as the storm lingers on, a big concern, though, is going to be power outages. local officials aren't only worried about just the power and the heat going out, but what some people do to try to keep their homes heated. they'll jerry rig their own devices, get carbon monoxide poisoning. local emergency management officials urging people just use common sense. shep? >> makes sense. get inside and get warm there, jonathan. >> reporter: will do. >> let's get to janet. that's the biggest difference between the storm that's hitting dixie and the storm that hit uses. the storm that hit us in new york, it was 4 degrees or something. it was powder, didn't stick to anything. this is valely w really wet and cause problem on trees and power lines. >> the ice is the problem. the purple on the screen is ice, shepard. the precipitation is fall through a shallow area of freezing air and freezing on contact. we're getting reports of roads and interstates being shut down. they did know about this. i'm getting reports of atlanta,
12:07 pm
georgia, the snow is coming down. they didn't shut a lot of schools down, and they're having problems on the road. people are abandoning their cars because they're out of gas. so we've got a really big emergency across the southeast. because it is snowing in atlanta. south of that, you see the purple, that's ice. the wintery mix in the pink shade. that's going to continue into the overnight and tomorrow. it will be done tomorrow, but for the foreseeable future, the next 12 to 24 hours we're going to see winter weather advisories. this is pretty rare. as you said, once in a decade. some of these areas could get snow they haven't seen in a decade or two. 6 to 12 inches potentially across the carolinas up toward virginia. forecast radar, we'll see the wintery precipitation along the gulf coast. montgomery, you'll get out of this later on this evening. atlanta, as we go through time through the overnight, into tomorrow, the storm will exit. look at the temperature, shepard. still very cold across the southeast. this precipitation is still going to remain frozen on the ground on the power lines, and
12:08 pm
on the interstates. >> minus 20s. that's nuts. >> yeah. it's going to continue, unfortunately, across the upper midwest. that's where the really cold air is. the core of the cold air. it's going it continue for the overnight and into tomorrow. as we get into thursday and friday, a little bit of more seasonal air mass is going to make its way in and if you take a look at chicago which has been in the deep freeze since early january, temperatures will still be below average, but at least it will be a little bit more manageable. back to you. >> all right. janice. fox news alert, it's time to begin the coverage of the luncheon. so come back, janice. don't go away. we always talk about this together. mr. smith had a placecard today. here's the menu. jani janice you're not on the screen. where are you? >> i'm here, i'm here. >> if you're serving a salad to the reporters who are going to say horrible things about you tonight, what would you serve? >> i can't even boil water.
12:09 pm
it probably be a bag of lettuce with the fixings prepared. >> similar to that but better. they had winter lettuces. i looked down and said, i wonder what a winter lettuce is going to be? a frozen lettuce? they're having pretty. they have lots of different colors. that came with shaved vegetables. >> there's iceberg lettuce. is that relate erelated? >> i don't know. that's possible. this is colorful letti, plural for lettuce. they had honeyed pecans. there it is. i sent a picture of the menu. take that down. we don't want them know what's coming up later. we're showing that later. >> did you take the picture of the meal, itself? >> one year i took pictures in there because you would have thought i set off a bazooka. you're not allowed to take pictures when you have an off the record luncheon with the president of the united states. >> you're right. bad question. >> the president who was in
12:10 pm
office at the time, apologize again if you're home watching. the other thing that came with this is a reggiano crisp. that's a cracker with air holes in it and tastes a little bit like cheese. >> it sounds delicious to me, though. >> man, i don't know what the dressing was, but it was a really light dressing, had shaved carrots in there. somebody had parboiled, or whatever it is you to do get the skin off the cherry tomatoes. i don't know who spends that much time working tomatoes for a salad, but they are good. >> i've never heard the word parboiled before. >> you never heard parboiled? that's what you do to some stuff to get the skin off it. you're going to parboil it, shepard. anyway, that's the beginning. that was the salad. we had a main course and then a dessert. i had to google an item in the main course, an item in the dessert and got a picture of the bottle of line. we'll she you that later. >> this is a fox news alert. i learned more in the last three
12:11 pm
minutes in cooking culinary skills than i have in a lifetime. >> stay with me, janice. you'll be just fine. you know who else was there? >> who? >> the man, brett, was there and had questions for the president. he said the kids are good, sends his best to you. diane sawyer, brian williams, scott pelley were all there. wolf blitzer was there. i sat next to him. wolf blitzer likes to separate the food into different piles. the next course, there was meat, vegetables there, little, like, starchy stuff. he put the vegetables in a little pile. mushrooms. put them in a separate pile before eating them. i was like, wolf, that's an interesting way to eat. >> what did he say? >> wolf? i'm not allowed to talk about what cnn people say. i don't know why. i got a memo on it. valerie jarrett was there. it was very nice. i think one of the lines that i think the president said he might use tonight when he says
12:12 pm
the state of our union is fill in the blank? the state of our union is cold. >> a weather reference. i'm so excited. >> that's the reason he gave you the shout-out. sometime over the next 20 minutes or so we'll go through the entree portion of things. beef. a kind of beef i've never heard of. we'll go through dessert portion and talk about the wine. lunch at the white house today with fancy journalists and me. first, other serious stuff. janice, wonderful to see you. make it warmer. police say somebody started shooting a at a high school today. people are hurt. we'll get the breaki developmens coming up. much more ahead from d.c. and the president's state of the union address. i'll speak to chris wallace. he went to the lunch last year because we were in rome. my team and i were in rome doing roman things. he went to the lunch. this year he did not get to go. he'll be here to hear more about it. we'll speak to a republican who says he has good ideas about
12:13 pm
what the president should stay tonight. we'll speak to a democrat about the importance of raising minimum rage for certain workers. whether you agree or disagree with it, the president is going to do it by executive order it sounds like. we'll get the politics of it all. i'm shepard smith reporting from the rotunda in washington, d.c. the lunch menu including photographs but not ones i took at the white house. coming up.

breaking news now on fox news channel. this out of hawaii.
12:16 pm
a school is on lockdown after some sort of shooting at roosevelt high school in honolulu. we have conflicting reports coming in. earlier there was word that two people were shot and expected to survive. that was the official word we got. now police are saying one person was hurt and that person is the suspect. so we have to different stories coming from authorities. we're working to figure out which one is right. a reporter for our fox station in honolulu talked to the grandmother of one of the students in the school. listen. >> my grandson was texting me telling me he loved me and i knew something was wrong. i knew something was wrong. i was fearful for him and the other children. to have to experience something like that here in hawaii. i was very fearful. >> and who wouldn't be? again, this is roosevelt high school in honolulu. the school, again, on lockdown. more on this as we get clarification on things. continuing coverage from d.c. on tonight's state of the union address. the white house tells us much of
12:17 pm
president obama's speech will focus on shrinking the gap between the rich and the poor. different ways to do that. the aides say the president plans to take action with or without help from congress. as i mentioned, those actions include an executive order to raise the minimum rage for new government contract workers. go over $10 an hour. the republican house speaker john boehner says the president probably does have the power to do that. in fact, he does. speaker boehner says raising the minimum wage for everybody would lead to job cuts. now, politicians of different stripes disagree on this matter. republicans, conservatives believe that's what happened. democrats believe it would put more money into the system and everything would improve. depends where you are politically, really. speaker boehner warns congress will be watching closely to make sure the president doesn't overstep his powers. that is no surprise. chris wallace is with us now, anchor of "fox news sunday." i thought you were going to walk over to the rotunda and hang out with us. i guess you're a little bit too -- to do that, right?
12:18 pm
>> my lunch, i went to the corner bakery. i had half of a chicken sandwich, a bowl of chicken noodle soup. it was all in styrofoam. could not have been more delicious. >> sounds great. i usually eat from one of those outlets there, 1211 6th avenue in midtown manhattan. same thing. costs twice as much. it's also delicious. >> where did you have lunch today? >> at the white house. you had lunch at the white house at this time last year, though, because my team and i were in rome doing roman things. >> that's true. >> i was kind of hoping you were going to be in rome again this year. that's not the way it worked out. i went to the corner bakery. it was fine. >> i was kind of hoping that -- >> in the president's state of the union speech, it's interesting, he's not going to be talking about income ine wu l inequality so much. they've done polling. when you talk about inequality, it sounds like you're talking about class warfare -- >> redistribution. >> -- and pitting rich against poor. he's going to talk about opportunity which is basically the same thing but puts it in
12:19 pm
context -- >> sounds better. >> we're going to build ladders of opportunity for people who are not doing so well to get into the middle class and lead more secure lives. it's not going to be a robust legislative agenda. he offered, proposed a lot of things to congress last year and didn't get almost any of them through. >> the president at the lunch today said, don't be saying i haven't done robust things, didn't get big ideas in, get some things done. he said, i did -- >> like what? >> well, he talked about a bunch of kids who didn't use to have insurance having insurance. he talked about a bunch of people having more opportunities than used to. he said specifically, here was his complaint, chris. he said if it doesn't look like the white house is forcing the republicans in congress to do something, it doesn't make news. he's like, look, when things get accomplished, it's news. i'm not saying i'm disagreei ii oar agreeing with him. i'm telling you what his point is. >> i went back and read last year's speech in preparation for "fox news sunday." he had dan pfeiffer on.
12:20 pm
proposed manufacturing hubs. hasn't done that. proposed raising the minimum wage. hasn't done that. proposed universal preschool. hasn't done that. immigration reform. hasn't gotten that. gun control. he didn't get that. you can argue whether or not it's his fault or the republicans' fault. the fact is he has a robust f it throughagenda last year. which is why as you point out, he's going to do more through executive action. the problem is given the constitution you can't get a lot done through executive action. there are few things on the margins he can do. the big stuff, quite rightly, you have to go to congress and get funding for. he's not going to get that with the possible exception of some form of immigration reform. >> yeah, there seems to be a great deal of optimism regarding immigration reform. i say this aside from today's luncheon. it sounds like speaker boehner is sending out positive words about this and the one thing that might probably be one they won't get, potentially might be a path to citizenship. >> yeah, it's interesting when we had dan pfeiffer on "fox news
12:21 pm
sunday" on sunday, he was indicating the president's not going to really harangue. he'll talk about it, but he isn't going to harangue republicans because he wants to give boehner and the republicans in the house some space to work something out. exactly as you point out, they're talking about a path to legalization for the 11 million or 12 million, howeveregals are country. not a path to citizenship, except the so-called dreamers, young people brought here as children and grown up in this country. the interesting question is whether the president would go for that because the immigration reform advocates very much want it to be citizenship, not legalization. be interesting to see, one, whether boehner can pull it off because there are a lot of republic chance who oppose either, think it's amnesty, then, two, whether the president would accept that. >> and that was one of the questions at the luncheon today. because it was off the record, i won't get into the details of it. i think we might learn more tonight. chris, good to see you. we'll be watching tonight for your coverage along with -- >> let me just say, corner bakery. >> yeah.
12:22 pm

25 minutes past the hour. days away from super bowl on big fox between the broncos and seahawks. today thousands of journalists from around the world gather to chat with the players and coaches ahead of the big game in new jersey on sunday. it's part of media day. super bowl tradition that attracts fans from all over. this year things are a little different. for the first time, media day is not happening in the stadium where the game will be played. it's frigid. it's outdoors. this year the festivities are indoors at some arena in newark. the media this afternoon crowded around seattle's richard sherman

as you might imagine. hear whether he had dramatic follow-ups. here's what the self-proclaimed best cornerback in all the game, i wouldn't argue, had to say earlier about the denver broncos quarterback, peyton manning. >> i think he's one of the best in the history of the game and broken most school records to prove that. he's a living legend right now. >> that was safe. it seems sherman has a bit more respect for manning or at least better control of his tongue today than he did for san francisco's michael crabtree about a week ago. rick levinthal covered media day today. if you want to know what happened at media day, switch over to fox sports. we're going to talk about the luncheon at the white house. how about that? >> reporter: that's great news, shepard. >> i thought you'd like that. we're going to go to the entree portion of today's festivities. all the anchors who work on the thing today, the state of the union thing. he tells us a bunch of stuff

we're not allowed to tell you. since i can't tell you what he said, i'll tell you about the food. the entree was aged monte beef, i was thinking like the piedmont region. isn't that what you'd think? it's from italy. the piedmont region of italy. razza bovina in italian. a breed of cattle from that region of the piedmont in northwest italy. the calves are born fawn in color. don't know what that means. turn gray/white as they mature. rick, when i found out the meat i ate today came from italy, i'm thinking how did they get it here? then i thought, well, actually maybe they just bring that breed of cattle over, breed them here, grow them here. cut them up, serve them up at the white house to have for lunch. what do you think? >> reporter: i think that they carry them by helicopter in a sling. the cow would be in a sling and fly across the atlantic and serve it fresh. >> yep.
12:28 pm
come to think of it, i was probably wrong. >> comes with a shallot. it was so good. rick, you have four pieces of the piedmont beef. pieces about this big. i would guess maybe we had 8 ounces a piece. they were over this three grain risoto with root vegetables. >> i have breaking news here, shepard. >> we have to continue this first. little bitty pearl onion. then what else came with it? i wrote it down. >> reporter: radishes. >> radishes? i wrote it down. mushrooms, squash, pearl onion. these terrific greens, i don't know what they were. jay wallace wouldn't eat them. there were carrots in the salad. they didn't have carrots with the entree. >> reporter: well, that's a

shame. what i did learn from dinosaur barbecue, they don't serve dinosaur meat. they have brisket and pulled and jerk chicken. >> i don't like jerk chicken. i like nice chicken. >> that was the entree. with the entree, rick, they served a chardonnay. i don't often order a chardonnay. put the chardonnay up on the screen. this is what they served today. this is chardonnay from napa, a 2011. i actually got scores on that from -- it did a 92 from wine searcher. and it's going to retail -- >> reporter: did you have more than one glass? >> i had less than one glass. i had to taste it so i could tell you about it. it retails for anywhere between $46 and $65 per bottle. plus taxes in u.s. dollars. >> reporter: that sounds like good wine. >> it was quite delicious. and if we could have stayed for a little while, we could have had a great afternoon if we had enough of the wine. i bet they did. it was really delicious, rick, i
12:30 pm
think you would have thoroughly enjoyed it. >> reporter: sorry i missed it. i wasn't invited. in other news, peyton manning says bud light is papa's favorite beer. >> i've actually seen r.g. drink miller light, not bud light. since they have a contract, it probably is. >> reporter: well, that's not what he told people at media day. >> guess what's coming up in the dessert section of this? >> reporter: i hope it involves chocolate. >> it involves a naval. somebody named kara and a naval. we'll get to that. rick, happy super bowl. will you be there on sunday? >> reporter: thank you, i will be there sunday. >> as will i. looking towa ining forward to i. we'll talk about the food there as well. >> reporter: can't wait. >> rick, have a great time in newark, wherever you are. what's left is the dessert portion of the menu. we'll get to that once we get to the politics of the day.
