are finding out the hard way there's no such thing as a free lunch. children's school accounts were emptied and ended up with empty stomachs as their meals were thrown out right before their eyes. and plus. ♪ she was just 17 >> can you believe it? it's been 50 years since the beetles took america by storm? hello everybody. "america's news headquarters" starts right now. we begin with the super bowl. it looks like not only will this be the coldest super bowl ever but it may also be the most secure. federal and local law enforcement act gencies are beeg up security as they try to address every possible concern. rick leventhal is standing by.

>> reporter: it's the calm before the storm at metlife stadium. before quiet today. it's a bit warmer. they're talking about a high near 50 tomorrow with a temperature at kickoff around 42, 43 degrees. it may not be the coldest super bowl ever, which is great news for the 80-plus thousands fans that will be screaming here tomorrow. we may be reporting on how this may be the most secure super bowl. the precautions got a bit of a test yesterday when there was some issue with white powder being mailed to several area hotels. the front desk receiving envelopes with white powder inside. new jersey state police responding along with local and federal authorities including the fbi joint task force and hazmat teams. the powder was harmless on first at the timing. apparently it was corn starch.
9:03 am
further testing is being done. there were no injuries. there was an unfortunate waste of time that authorities will have to deal with because of the scrutiny here at metlife and surrounding super bowl xlviii. some of this was monitored by the command post. it was built in a secret location near the stadium where more than 100 are gathering to keep an eye on metlife. >> there's been a lot of planning for a lot of months and even years in making this super bowl successful. that's in large part because of the broad metropolitan area that we're in. it's more complex being in larger area where you're crossing over states and different jurisdictions. everyone has been fantastic. i can't say enough great things about the people working on this. >> reporter: they're calling it the first ever mass transit
9:04 am
super bowl. here is a taste of what ticketholders will encounter. tsa will be conducting full airport style searches of all bags of passengers who are boarding trains at the seacaukus junction. 40% of fans are expected to ride trains. they have 28,000 parking spaces but for the super bowl only 12,000 because of the tents they have set up and the security precautions. no one can take taxis, no one can ride limos here or walk here. it's either mass transit or pile into one of those 12,000 cars to fill a spot here. >> we can expect thousands of people showing up for the big game tomorrow. thank you very much, rick. we're going to have mump more on the super bowl coming up later. our brian kilmeade will be joining us. he'll share great stories surrounding super bowl xlviii.

9:06 am
it's the most prestigious sporting event. you'll have 20,000 workers who will be there. that's over 100,000 people in a square mile. in terms of the ingredients for a great party and event, it's going to be huge. this is a security migraine for the officials. >> absolutely. thankfully we have not seen a suicide bomber at this point. it's now raising concerns with authorities here ahead of tomorrow's game about that lone wolf scenario which is daunting. >> ever since 9/11 the super bowl has been designated a level one event. it's got designated support from the fbi. they've apportioned 4,000 security officials and personnel
9:07 am
to the event tomorrow. just to put that into perspecti perspective, that's 4,000 officials for 100,000 people within a square mile. the british put 9,000 troops at the height of the taliban insurgency for 22,000 square miles. the amount of security going into this is huge. it's going to have a in fly zone which will be put into place. that's going to be sanctioned by black hawk helicopters. you have a 300 foot ring of steel that came into lockdown. you'll have the usual sealing of the manhole covers. you'll have the garbage facilities taken away. there's a lot going into this. today's new world order is about global terrorism. it's about insurgencies and about an international jihad that wants to inflect chaos and carnage. this is something we have to adapt to. if you look at the organization
9:08 am
such as hezbollah or taliban, what makes up their intelligence network are the people that live within the society. it's the people that have access to mobile phones. normal people that walk on the streets every day, every worker and every person going to the super bowl tomorrow, if they see an isolated vent, see someone suspiciously just to pick up phone and call the number for security authorities the today what we have today is take on the problem. we don't have to assume that someone else will deal with the problem. if we start adopting the mind set we'll be able to counter what we see as a high security threat. >> one word about next week's game in sochi. the fact that the united states is offering to provide support to provide resources is saying we don't need it. it's your reaction. >> kind of sort of keep this really as its own.
9:09 am
there's a serious amount of security going into sochi. they have artillery systems that can take out multiple targets. that will have forces peppered around the area. there's a communications network of over 1400 tv cameras going into operation command center. i think we should just leave it to get it covered. if you look at the london olympics, there was an aircraft carrier positioned. the latest generation is where fighters came down into the capital. i think this is the nature of what we're seeing at the moment. in any big event where you'll have hundreds of thousands of people. these are the type of security enforcements that we're having to put in place. i think this is what we have to expect now moving forward. >> always great to see you. thank you for joining us. >> thanks. turning to another big concern leading up to this

9:12 am
strengthen law enforcements around this issue? >> out here in arizona our governor has been very progressive on this. we're in the midst of passing legislation that will not only increase penalties but make sure traffickers are put away for a long time. our attempt is to make arizona a flyover state. we want everyone to have a family, friendly event and keep our children safe. there's a lot to be done. we've put up billboards and have the 800 number up. we're attempting to make sure every driver, cab driver, bus driver, everybody understands what's going on and are educated, our airport people as well as our first responders. >> it's very important and i know you are preparing for next year's super bowl to be held in arizona. how effective has the training been when it comes to working with employees in bars, hotels

9:15 am
here's a quote from the report. the proposed project is unlikely to significantly affect the rate of extraction in oil sands areas based on prices, oil sands supply costs and supply/demand scenarios. ultima ultimately, president obama will need to give this project a thumbs up or thumbs down. the white house says a decision on whether the project is in the national interest will be made only after careful consideration of that report and other pertinent information, comments from the public and views of other agency heads. now there's some disagreement among democrats about whether or not the keystone pipeline is a good thing or a bad thing. you have california democratic senator barbara boxer saying my biggest concerns continue do be the serious health impacts on communities and pollution that
