tv Housecall FOX News February 2, 2014 7:30am-8:01am PST
7:30 am
. now time for sunday house call. >> i'm jamie colby. welcome to all of you as we welcome the chairman and professor of urologist at the chief of robotic surgery. >> doctor mark segal is the author of the inner pulse with the secret code of sickness and health. welcome as always. >> great to have you here. >> of course. >> this week, an amazing warning from the fda. the agency is not now looking at the risk of stroke, heart attack
7:31 am
and death with the treatments. this seems to be troubling when you hear about this. >> eric, all of us have seen the ads on tv with the image of the older gentlemen who looks healthy. it's interesting to see this kind of result coming out. some people call this the fountain of youth for anti-aging. this is a 400 million dollar industry and it's growing. more and more men are saying i need that testosterone and prescription. we are going to be careful here. let me talk about menopause among women. we have talked about this. it's abrupt and you get the hot flashes and the symptoms around 41 to 51-year-olds. with men it's a slower process over the age of 35. men lose testosterone about 1% a year. by the time you get to your 50s, you will get your feeling of low libido and you don't want to
7:32 am
socialize and that's the picture of someone sitting at the tv watching sports all the time. that makes sense. they go to the doctor and get injections or a patch. you have to be careful. that's a big message. make sure you see your urologist before we start this. we need to know the psa and the size of your prostate and check your testosterone early in the morning. it has a sar kadian rhythm. in the morning it's higher. it has to be between 300 to 1,000. going back to what you said. too low is not good for you. that's the metabolic. >> how do you feel if you don't have enough? >> you are running out of energy. you have no battery. >> how do you know if it's safe? >> you can replace it now. if you overshoot and have too much testosterone, you increase
7:33 am
the risk of stroke and heart attack. too much is not merrier. you have to be in the normal zone of the urologist. >> you have to tell the doctor. >> the biggest problem is the doctor is not always in the loop. 25% of the men get testosterone replacement. 50% get it treated wrongly by not a urologist. somebody who puts him on it. 25% will get the replacement should actually get it. we have to five times of the prescription we had ten years ago. what should you do. you go to your doctor. over 50 i check everyone's level because of the reasons david mentioned. the risk of obesity and diabetes and heart disease and cholesterol and libido and all
7:34 am
with low testosterone. that's where the question comes in. do i replace it or don't i? i refer to an expert. the problem here with the wake up call, it looks like from the huge study of over 50,000 men in the major journal, if you start on men over 60, i will give you testosterone. why? men, i think have an underlying risk of heart disease. you may be sitting there with a plaque. you can be at risk of a heart attack and not know it. if you give something that revs up testosterone, that's the issue. >> it's confident with what they just said. testosterone is not always the answer. obesity itself can cause low testosterone. now we know that there ren zims
7:35 am
that can convert to estrogen. that's why men get the man boobs as a result of increasing estrogen. depression is another that can lower your testosterone. >> the changes are sometimes without going on testosterone. you talked about the man boobs, you may not feel comfortable talking to your doctor about it. you see the guy in the bathtub. he is ready any time. a lot of men feel pressure they have to feel that libido and feel pressured to do the testosterone. you have a strong warping for guys not to do this without consuling a physician first. >> you described that in just the right way. there is all this pressure. that's why prescriptions have increased. the message here is yes, it may help you with your libido and energy. what are the underlying factors?
7:36 am
those men that had heart disease it was three times the risk. i'm not saying not to take it, but be careful about it. >> we wanted people to know that libido is very different than sexual function. if you have dysfunction that we are talking about, the treatment is viagra or cialis and it's a different way of treating it. libido is testosterone. you may have a drive and a mechanical problem. talk to your doctor. >> interesting. thank you. i'm sure guys appreciate it. all right. let's talk about another troubling health alert. a second cruise ship was forced to return to port early because they suspected a norovirus outbreak. i reported on this and i'm not really sure what norovirus is. why is it different than other ailments. >> i reported on the first one. norovirus was confirmed in the
7:37 am
first outbreak on royal caribbean. everyone is watching the news and only nine ships had it last year and so far this year. of all the 20 million passengers that go on a ship, your chances of getting norovirus remain quite low. what is norovirus? the number one cause of gi-related distress in the country. it's the number one cause of you having that nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. >> it is on airplanes. it's not only on cruises, but all over the place. 20 million people a year get it in the country. cruises are what we report on. there two reasons. the virus mutates and changes all the time. you think you are immune, you are not. the next reason is it only takes 14 particles of the virus to
7:38 am
give it to you. with the first we spoke to the passengers. it was harrowing if you got one. let's watch. >> we are feeling nausea and feverish. we went back to our cabin and we were sick. without going into detail. we were sick. >> they were constantly sanitizing and spraying everything. the elevators and inside the elevators and everywhere you went. you were not allowed to touch everything. you couldn't take a napkin. you could take nothing. everything had to be handed to you. >> the big question of the day is how do you protect yourself? >> this is a new kid around the block to some extent. it has been around since 1970. they called it norwalk virus. it's very contagious and a stubborn bug that can be everywhere.
7:39 am
it can be on this table and on the doorknob. food, water, everywhere. the reason why we are having a problem with this even though they call it stomach flu, it's not a flu. flu you need about 1,000 particles to get it. how do you prevent it? it will go on its own. you have diria, nausea and vo t vomiting. the hand sanitizers may not work very well. washing your hands is a way to go and cook your foot to 140 degrees. it doesn't disappear easily. if you feel part of the kitchen is contaminated, this is the area where a lot of people constantly touch everything. get rid of all that food. >> everything is contaminated. >> on a ship they controlled it, cdc controlled it. they only eight from that place.
7:40 am
>> they can possibly die from this. hydrate. >> if you have a stomach virus or the norovirus, you may need to be hydrated with the iv bag. >> wash your hands all the time. >> don't touch your mouth. you can't get your hands to your mouth. >> be careful, guys. be careful. >> you know about the e cigarettes market said as a safer alternative. why are they coming under fire? >> do you really have to smoke no matter what it is? there is something more serious than bad breath. really? do you brush your teeth every day? if you don't brush your teeth every day, maybe you are okay. doctors will tell us, next.
7:42 am
suffering from the flu is a really big deal. with aches, fever and chills- there's no such thing as a little flu. so why treat it like it's a little cold? there's something that works differently than over-the-counter remedies. prescription tamiflu attacks the flu virus at its source. so call your doctor right away. tamiflu treats the flu in people 2 weeks and older whose flu symptoms started within the last two days. before taking tamiflu tell your doctor if you're pregnant, nursing, have serious health conditions, or take other medicines. if you develop an allergic reaction, a severe rash, or signs of unusual behavior, stop taking tamiflu and call your doctor immediately. children and adolescents in particular may be at an increased risk of seizures, confusion or abnormal behavior. the most common side effects are mild to moderate nausea and vomiting.
7:43 am
so don't wait. attack the flu virus at its source. ask your doctor about tamiflu, prescription for flu. plays a key role throughout our lives. one a day men's 50+ is a complete multivitamin designed for men's health concerns as we age. with 7 antioxidants to support cell health. one a day men's 50+.
7:44 am
. back now to the suspected house call. a safer alternative to regular cigarettes. does that mean this is the answer? >> i would say cigarettes are not safe. we have a way to reduce the number of cigarettes and now it's a misperception and you have to be careful. this is for someone who is a real heavy smoker and tried everything to quit. i can see how they can use it on the way out towards quitting. by having this in the market, you have to have the number of high school st
7:45 am
there is no carcinogens. you don't know how much nicotine is there. each one is a different amount. not regulated and they are toxic. it's not made correctly. i want you to be careful about this. we don't have long-term data about the stuff you are inhaling. there different smells. >> it's not completely okay. >> it's not okay. i agree with david. it's a $1.7 billion industry. they consider it a gateway drug. the high schoolers are using it. 80% of high schoolers are also smoking cigarettes. that's the problem. 12 states are trying to ban it
7:46 am
in minors. they are getting it from parents and on the street. the one thing positive about it, if it were in the doctor doctor's hands, there was a study that came out of britain that shows it is as effective as the patch and an overall smoking cessation. if it were in the doctor's hands, i would occasionally use it to help a heavy smoker quit that is out of control. it is a gateway drug to get into the nicotine. the next thing you know -- >> how do you quit? >> there many behavioral changes to quit. this is not the way to go. if it's in the hands of doctors, it's not safe. you don't know what's in it. that's the thing. it's not regulated. i said it last week.
7:47 am
>> here's something else. if you forget to brush your teeth, people do more. doctors say it's not only your mouth health, but overall health if you skip brushes. is mouth wash enough? we will find out, next. i ys sayn with the plan but with less ergy, moodiness, i had to do something. i saw mdoctor. a blood test showed it was low testosterone, not age. we talked about axiron the onlynderarm low t treaent that can restore t vels to normal in about two weeks in most men. axiron is not for use in women or anyone younger than 18 or men with prostate or breast cancer. women, especlly those who are or who may become pregnant, and children should avoidt

7:51 am
but one of you out there and wrote us about this, our segment, should i worry, asking, i don't brush my teeth every day. should i worry? they know who they are. dr. siegel. >> i brush my teeth, but i can't say that everyone in my family does. and i am fought is going name names here. listen, the army is coming out with a combat gum. i am telling you, brush your teeth, two to three minutes, three times a day if you can with flossing after meals. rinse out that toothbrush. get to the inside teeth. because, jamie, because of plaque. because the plaque is an inflammatory because it gets into your bloodstream. >> tease the same as the plaque in your arteries? >> no, it's not. but it's an inflammatory marker that leads to heart disease. gum disease, if you ask me, what about flossing? sure. but it's flossing and brushing
7:52 am
that decreases your risk of gum disease. you have to do both. one last thing, pregnant women are more likely to have premies if they have bad oral hygiene. >> so it's not just keeping your breath fresh or teeth cleaned, it's actually -- could affect your heart. >> yes. don't let him scare you. he sounds like a dentist. don't be scared. listen, i think the concept behind this is very interesting. it's not so much about the bad odor or agabegin ga vitis. the bacteria gets into the blood. the protein on this bacteria cause -- which attracts a lot of these platelets that we have in our blood. now what's going to lap to this bacteria? it's going to have a shell around it that your immune system is not going to get to. now this guy is going to go anywhere near your body and we're chasing this bacteria. where is it going to go? it's going to go to the valve.
7:53 am
endocarditis, heart disease, heart attack, all of that. to just from brushing your teeth. i've had a lot of discussions that will tell you just simple floss and toothbrush is going to save you a lot. what percent of america today are flossing, do you know? >> i don't know. 20%? >> about 40%. so it's not too bad. but this combat gum has something behind it. it kills the bacteria. >> you're scaring people, too. >> no. i'm not doing combat gum. we're going to start brushing our teeth and flossing. >> and replace your toothbrush every three months at least because that bacteria loves to live on it. >> speaking of food, you know, millions of us are getting ready for the super bowl parties later on tonight. you know what that means. great snacks. a lot of calories and snacks. i mean, who wants to trade in the pigs for the blanket for celery and carrots?
7:54 am
2 doctors will be here in a moment to tell us how we can make it healthier. hey kevin...still eating chalk for heartburn? yeah... try new alka seltzer fruit chews. they work fast on heartburn and taste awesome. these are good. told ya! i'm feeling better already. [ male announcer ] new alka seltzer fruits chews. enjoy the relief!
7:57 am
welcome back to house call. before you break out traditional chips later on, some easier ways to make it healthier. i ain't giving any of that up. >> you've got to give up a little bit of the pizza. that's the only problem. the cheese, hot dogs, processed meat is the only thing you have to give up. but look, replace it with the healthy stuff. have some avocado with tomatoes, have some turkey burger. but look, this is about having fun. it's a great day. we're all going to enjoy ourselves and tomorrow we're
7:58 am
going to hit the gym and get rid of it. but what's important, i found out that nutra system men's health package doubles and more and more people are got to get back into the gym to get rid of this. for now, drink a lot of water and watch out for the calories. >> i'm having chicken wings and bleu cheese dipping sauce. there's nothing like that. it is fantastic. >> beer is inevitable. i can never talk anybody off of beer today. get rid of the juice, get rid of the sodas. use seltzer or water with that beer. if you're going to have chicken wings, beak them instead of frying them. >> zucchini chips, they're healthier for you. if you're going to have chili, put turkey in the chili instead of beef. >> don't get nervous, folks, we're going to have the things that you love. but i like dr. sa mandy's menu.
7:59 am
listen to this, the zucchini tries, which are baked, the sweet potatoes, low glycemic. turkey burgers with avocado and homus on the side doesn't sound horrible. >> fought so bad. >> and popcorn is another great one. but don't have the butter with it. and root for the broncos. >> fair and balanced. i put everything on facebook. >> go ahead. >> how about light beer? >> light beer is better than regular beer, absolutely. we're making some inroads there. >> there's nothing wrong with having a little bit of fun. you can get rid of it tomorrow. >> we hope you'll exercise after the game. >> absolutely. >> i'm going to exercise after the game? i'm going to be stuffed. >> get out there and run, eric, a long walk. >> have a great day, everybody. doctors, thank you so much. that's going tore it for us.
