>> and it's the super bowl and super sunday every sunday on housecall. media buzz with howard kurtz comes up next right here on the fox news channel on this super bowl sunday. >> as you look at super bowl boulevard and there's the stadium. big game. on the buzz meter this super bowl sunday, barack obama is suiting up for a game day face-off with bill o'reiley. why is the president playing ball with a network he clearly resents? a former chris christie appointee claims the governor knew about the george washington bridge closures and isn't telling the truth. and christie hits back tt "new york times" for reporting it. are the media overplaying this latest charge? and with the big game just hours away, i talk with michael strahan, now kelly rippi's co-host about what players really think about the media circus surrounding the super bowl and the treacherous terrain facing black athletes. >> have you ever, as an

african-american player, gotten that kind of abuse? >> heck, i still get it now. i don't think that ever goes away. i think there are a lot of ignorant people out there, the best way to put it. a lot of ignorant people who look at people for their race instead of them as a person. >> and erin andrews speaks candidly about her handling of that postgame ran by seattle aes richard sherman. >> what everyone in america wants to know is what was going through your mind when richard sherman was getting rather emotional on the sidelines with you? >> i better not mess this up. >> i'm howard kurtz and this is media buzz. the denver broncos and seattle seahawks aren't the only ones heading for a showdown today. president obama faces off with bill o'reiley. besides the president's obvious

distaste for fox news, which was clear at their last sit down, three years ago. >> do you think you're being treated fairley by fox news now? >> i would say that the news guys, i think, try to do a good job, although look, let's face it, fox news has a point of view. >> one of the stakes when they go toe to toe today. joinings us now, lauren ashburn. jim pinkerton, contributing editor at american conservative magazine, both are fox news contributors and fox news analyst, juan williams. president obama keeps complaining about fox. so why is he sitting down with o'reiley? >> howie, three words. bill o'reiley, bill o'reiley and bill o'reiley. there are other reasons, of course. how many people watch the super bowl? 108 million. >> so you're saying it's that he can't turn down o'reiley? it has nothing to do with the huge football audience? >> it's the audience and he can't turn down bill o'reiley. bill o'reiley in the last two presidential interviews gave him a really fair shot. last year, 2011, he called him a

big name liberal who has intrude on your personal freedom, but he allowed the president to talk. it wasn't a hatchet job. and he's trying to reach out moderates. he has a lot of policy issues he wants to sell. if he's seen as sitting down with bill o'reiley, better chance for him. >> the president spoke with tepper this week. clearly, fox gets under his skin. why is he consorting with the likes of o'reiley? lauren seems to think it's because they get along so well. >> i didn't say that. >> i know. >> he is president obama and you do have to reach out and show popularity, but it was interesting. he does try and take a dig at -- part of the fun of him going on and to say i think fox is bias against me. i don't think that is fair. i think the real reality is when the president says i don't like fox news, he really doesn't like reporters as a general species. if you listen to what jill
8:04 am
abramson has said about his secrecy and lynn downey, the former editor of "the washington post" has said, and mark sanger saying this is a control freak administration, his real beef is with the media in general. he still has to go on. >> i wonder whether the president secretly enjoys the combat with o'reiley or at the very least thinks this kind of an interview, if it's a combative interview, can help him. >> no, and typically i don't think it has been. i don't think bill o'reiley has been combative. the last time he got the president to agree to do something for wounded warriors. and you have to try and keep in mind, i don't think there's any question the president doesn't like fox and i think that fox has been, at times, especially in our opinion journalism, very antagonistic towards the president. i mean, but the part that's interesting here is you go back a little ways and you get people like anita dunn, when she was the communications director with the white house, the idea was to
8:05 am
delegitimize fox as a new o outlet, that people like -- i know this personally, that i came under pressure, why do i work there? why do i legitimize fox news? the answer is fox news is legitimate news. we do news here. and i get to say what i want to say. i think in the interview today, what they want to say to bill oh rye olympic. says to them, i don't discriminate against fox news, so you liberals and you moderates and independents, guess what? i do business with everyone. >> i think fox news permits like shawn hanady, for example, are so strong and frankly polarizing. but look, ed henry, the white house correspondent in fox was elected president of the white house correspondent's association. most of them are probably liberals unless they think you're favor. >> these interviews coming after the state of the union which draw a 14-year low in the
8:06 am
ratings, it got tepid reviews. but since we're talking about something that's going to take place, the super bowl being in new jersey, i'm going to pivot to another new jersey story, since a member of chris christie's inner circle turned on him on friday in the george washington bridge scandal, his claims getting very different treatment in the media. christie said that he was angry at david wildstein. now, wildstein's lawyer says evidence exists, as well, tying mr. christie to having knowledge of the lane closures during the period when the lanes were closed, contrary to what the governor stated publicly in a two-hour press conference. the "new york times" which broke the story, nightly news cast, msnbc and cnn have been all over it. fox news has been more restrained and more skeptical. >> the state's leading newspaper has said if this is true, the governor must resign. >> the former official saying tonight the new jersey governor
8:07 am
knew more than he has said and there is evidence. >> the potential blockbuster in the chris christie bridge scandal. the evidence exists tying him to -- what does that mean? he knew? what do you mean? why don't you just say he knew? >> is this story, these charges, is it a blockbuster for the media? >> no. and here's why. i think that it came out late friday afternoon. i was on twitter and everybody went, this is it, smoking gun, it's over for christie and he's going to have to resign. all of a sudden you took a step back and said, wait a minute, let's parse the language. david wildstein was trying to get money out of the port authority to pay for his legal bills. he is somebody who is really trying at this point to save his own skin. >> he's clearly trying to get immunity and he didn't provide any of the evidence that his lawyer says exists. at the same time, he could be very damaging to the man he worked for. doesn't that make it a pretty important story? >> it could be.
8:08 am
and the "new york times" had to amend their story originally. this is the new york city media market. that's one of the reasons christie got so famous in the first place is in the new york city media market. he rose in the buzz and now he's sinking on it, as well. the media markets there have turned a traffic column into a mountain. thank you. and i think that, look, the level of exaggeration here that he should resign over a traffic cone? i mean, it's a little overkill and i think after a few days, the media are kind of realizing maybe they overbid on this story. >> let's dwell for a second on the "new york times" role. the initial story said that wildstein -- let me get the quote here -- had the evidence -- claimed he had the evidence to prove it and then this sort of was rewritten online and it stuck to the evidence exists formulation. but the times posted the letter
8:09 am
for everybody to see. so that everybody that was writing and talking about it could have on their own interpretation of what wildstein was saying. >> right. i think that's not legitimate. i think the headline was an overstatement. but to think that people now perceive the "new york times" as having an adversarial relationship with christie is interesting. they've had the reporter who has been out in front in breaking these stories. but over the course of christie's career, the "new york times" i think has treated him fairley. christie has been the darling of that new york media that you guys were referring to. the bigger point here is that this is now death by 1,000 cuts for christie .it's not stopping. this is likely to get worse. there are other people that christie said he fired, his top political adviser, his deputy chief of staff. when they do their interviews, there's going be more allegat n allegations tratd truth is tied to chris christie. >> he is also very much still showing his feisty side, right?
8:10 am
that e-mail that came out -- >> it was reported by politico. this is an e-mail that christie sent and was leaked, probably was intended to leak, a media firestorm was set up by sloppy reporting on the "new york times" of how to describe the evidence or alleged evidence. sure. and i think anybody would see here that he's going on the absolute defensive here. or offensive, actually, because he's trying so hard to win over the public that he feels that he's losing by this. >> it was kind of hilarious, the christie memo was saying, and by the way, he was a bad guy in high school. however, what we're all saying here is that the media can now say there's an appearance of impropriety, a barrage of allegations every which way. surely, folks, there must be some fire under the smoke. well, it might just be smoke. we don't know yet. >> the media polling and were intently dropping now across the
8:11 am
board, including among republicans and, again, i think this is sort of too early. but that's what chris christie is up against. and you look at msnbc. he was their darling. >> it was said in a tweet, show us the evidence. >> and we all have to not rush to judgment here and see what the evidence is. i think it's significant when a guy who is so closely aligned with the governor announced to the world through his lawyer, i'm going to turn on him and this could get more ugly. >> i was just going to say, the point is -- there are two words in there that make this not as bad as everybody thought it was in the beginning. and it's evidence exists. it's not him saying i have the evidence. it's that it exists and he may know that it exists. whether or not it's going to come forward is another story. >> yes. even on days when it too happen to you in this story, it seems to lead to many of the prime time shows. but on the other hand, do you think that fox news, especially
8:12 am
in light of this latest allegation especially from this guy, wildstein, has underplaying this charge? >> that was the charge, somehow fox news was ignoring -- >> not ignoring it, but -- >> well, no, when it first popped. but if you look now at the body of coverage, fox news has come on to this story in a very aggressive manner. i was on camera when we did the press conference. i thought i had lived here. let me say this to you. what you see is i think it's msnbc that's overreacting. i think if you watch their coverage you're like, are they still on that story? don't they have anything else to talk about? >> last thought, jim. >> the press conference, january 9th, went on for almost two hours. after an hour, i was bored. there's such a thick as being television interesting and christie going on and on again it just got dull. >> i think the consensus is this story is not going away anytime soon. send aus tweet about our show during this hour.
8:13 am
@howardkurtz. when we come back, rand paul goes there bringing up the issue of monica liewinski. and erin andrews on how they dealt with richard sherman. >> i was feeling a lot of pressure because i knew i'd be crucified if i asked a stupid question. hey, buddy? oh, hey, flo. you want to see something cool? snapshot, from progressive. my insurance company told me not to talk to people like you. you always do what they tell you? no... try it, and see what your good driving can save you. you don't even have to switch. unless you're scared. i'm not scared, it's... you know we can still see you. no, you can't. pretty sure we can... try snapshot today -- no pressure.

own used a democrat's war on clinton to attack his awful conduct back in the '90s. >> and i think, really, the media seems to have given president clinton a pass on this. he took advantage of a girl that was 20 years old and an intern in his office. >> gist pinkerton, when david gregory asked whether hillary clinton should be judged on what happened 15 or so years ago. he said, well, i'm not saying that, but with the clintons, it's hard to separate one or the other. why bring this up now? >> in fairness to paul, he said your wife did this interview with vogue. paul in some sense was defending his wife's point of view. >> he could have criticized it like all -- >> the country probably thinks hitting on internals in sexual harassment is a bad thing. in d.c., it's old news. i think paul brought up a legitimate issue that at the clinton's conduct over the last 40 years is a genuine issue to the country. >> but we're talking about

hillary clinton. hillary clinton did nothing wrong in that instance. she got up, she defended her husband on matt lauer by saying the right wing media conspiracy was something -- >> because she was lied to. >> because she was lied to by her husband. what are we going to say to her now as she's running? how did you feel when that happened? i just feel like there are a lot of other substantive issues that we should be talking to hillary clinton about. benghazi, syria, a lot of them. >> the next day, joe scarborough said the republicans shouldn't bring this up because of backlash. but perhaps the media have the responsibility to bring it up in terms of a hillary clinton campaign. do they? >> no. we've had this argument as a nation. we've impeached bill clinton over this. >> we didn't do it. >> the american people, right. bill clinton is now one of the most popular elder statesmen in american life. >> which suggests the country -- >> the country is over it.
8:19 am
>> terrible, excusable, and the country -- >> but you just heard from lauren, right? which is that the democrats always want to make out the war on women issue. this comes back to you are now blaming the wife for the misbehavior of the husband? again, that is not good. let me just say the larger issue here is hillary clinton being the inevitable candidate now on the democratic side, the polling leaks at 72% of democrats basher? and republicans not only want to keep the lewinski thing in there, they would like benghazi to come back to life to bring her down from her tremendously high numbers. >> senator paul says the media gave mr. clinton a pass. that was certainly not true, we talked about this basically every day on television. >> and having chased monica lewinski's car everywhere. >> but it is true it almost never comes up today. you're saying man it should and lauren saying maybe it should preveal how about hellry?
8:20 am
>> rand paul did a horrible gaffe by letting himself get dragged into this because the political window has closed on this particular issue. paul made a mistake. i think he did speak to a concern of people and if hillary is the inevitable county and the inevitable president, we should be scrutinizing everyone about her life. >> what did it have to do with hillary? >> well, it's unclear what it had to do with hellry, except that she continues to work with him closely on, travrm, the clinton foundation with the "new york times" shows to investigate thoroughly in may of last year. then the media dropped that story. but i think the whole relationship, how they raised several hundred million dollars at least with -- >> but that's a different issue. >> it is a different issue, but it's history. >> and it's his character, is what you're saying? >> it's the couple. >> i think we can say that they're married .they are a team. all right. juan williams, jim pinkerton, that's coming coming by.

8:29 am
you have to be a little crazy. you have to be a little arrogant. you have to be able to talk smack in order to survive. and for people to finally see that, it scared them. and i don't know why there was such an adverse reaction to it. >> i've got my new york headline, strahan football players are crazy. >> of course they are. >> as you know, the reaction to richard sherman online, there was a lot of racist junk, a lot of nasty stuff. you've had some controversy in your career. have you ever had had that kind of abuse? i still get that you no. >> really? >> yes. i don't think that ever goes away. there are a lot of ignorant people out there who look at people for their race instead of them as a person. that is one thing i learned growing up on a military base. you have to learn how to get along with each other because you nooud need it to survive.
