that's all for today. thanks for joining me. until next time, i hope you're learning to be more of a healthy you. . now time for sunday house call. >> i'm jamie colby. welcome to all of you as we welcome the chairman pressoof senate chief of robotics surgery. >> and dr. marc siegel is professor of medicine at langdon medical center pulse wi the secret code of sickness and health. welcome as always. >> great to have you here. >> of course. >> this week, an amazing warning from the fda. the agency is not now looking at the risk of stroke, heart attack
1:31 pm
and death with the treatments. this seems to be troubling when you hear about this. >> eric, all of us have seen the ads on tv with the image of the who looks healthy. it's interesting to see this kind of result coming out. some people call this the fountain of youth for anti-aging. this is a 400 million dollar industry and it's growing. more and more men are saying i need that testosterone and prescription. we are going to be careful here. let me talk about menopause among women. we have talked about this. it's abrupt and you get the hot flashes and the symptoms around 41 to 51-year-olds. with men it's a slower process over the age of 35. men lose testosterone about 1% a year. by the time you get to your 50s, you will get your feeling of low libido and you don't want to
1:32 pm
socialize and that's the picture of someone sitting at the tv watching sports all the time. that makes sense. they go to the doctor and get injections or a patch. you have to be careful. that's a big message. make sure you see your urologist before we start this. we need to know the psa and the size of your prostate and check your testosterone early in the morning. it has a sar kadian rhythm. in the morning it's higher. it has to be between 300 to 1,000. going back to what you said. too low is not good for you. that's the metabolic. >> how do you feel if you don't have enough? >> you are running out of energy. you have no battery. >> how do you know if it's safe? >> you can replace it now. if you overshoot and have too much testosterone, you increase
1:33 pm
the risk of stroke and heart attack. too much is not merrier. you have to be in the normal zone of the urologist. >> you have to tell the doctor. >> the biggest problem is the doctor is not always in the loop. 25% of the men get testosterone replacement. 50% get it treated wrongly by not a urologist. somebody who puts him on it. 25% will get the replacement should actually get it. we have to five times of the prescription we had ten years ago. what should you do. you go to your doctor. over 50 i check everyone's level because of the reasons david mentioned. the risk of obesity and diabetes and heart disease and cholesterol and libido and all
1:34 pm
with low testosterone. that's where the question comes in. do i replace it or don't i? i refer to an expert. the problem here with the wake up call, it looks like from the huge study of over 50,000 men in the major journal, if you start on men over 60, i will give you testosterone. why? men, i think have an underlying risk of heart disease. you may be sitting there with a plaque. you can be at risk of a heart attack and not know it. if you give something that revs up testosterone, that's the issue. >> it's confident with what they just said. testosterone is not always the answer. obesity itself can cause low testosterone. now we know that there ren zims
1:35 pm
that can convert to estrogen. that's why men get the man boobs as a result of increasing estrogen. depression is another that can lower your testosterone. >> the changes are sometimes without going on testosterone. you talked about the man boobs, you may not feel comfortable talking to your doctor about it. you see the guy in the bathtub. he is ready any time. a lot of men feel pressure they have to feel that libido and feel pressured to do the testosterone. you have a strong warping for guys not to do this without consuling a physician first. >> you described that in just the right way. there is all this pressure. that's why prescriptions have increased. the message here is yes, it may help you with your libido and energy. what are the underlying factors?
1:36 pm
those men that had heart disease it was three times the risk. i'm not saying not to take it, but be careful about it. >> we wanted people to know that libido is very different than sexual function. if you have dysfunction that we are talking about, the treatment is viagra or cialis and it's a different way of treating it. libido is testosterone. you may have a drive and a mechanical problem. talk to your doctor. >> interesting. thank you. i'm sure guys appreciate it. all right. let's talk about another troubling health alert. a second cruise ship was forced to return to port early because they suspected a norovirus outbreak. i reported on this and i'm not really sure what norovirus is. why is it different than other ailments. >> i reported on the first one. norovirus was confirmed in the
1:37 pm
first outbreak on royal caribbean. everyone is watching the news and only nine ships had it last year and so far this year. of all the 20 million passengers that go on a ship, your chances of getting norovirus remain quite low. what is norovirus? the number one cause of gi-related distress in the country. it's the number one cause of you having that nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. >> it is on airplanes. it's not only on cruises, but all over the place. 20 million people a year get it in the country. cruises are what we report on. there two reasons. the virus mutates and changes all the time. you think you are immune, you are not. the next reason is it only takes 14 particles of the virus to
1:38 pm
give it to you. with the first we spoke to the passengers. it was harrowing if you got one. let's watch. >> we are feeling nausea and feverish. we went back to our cabin and we were sick. without going into detail. we were sick. >> they were constantly sanitizing and spraying everything. the elevators and inside the elevators and everywhere you went. you were not allowed to touch everything. you couldn't take a napkin. you could take nothing. everything had to be handed to you. >> the big question of the day is how do you protect yourself? >> this is a new kid around the block to some extent. it has been around since 1970. they called it norwalk virus. it's very contagious and a stubborn bug that can be
1:39 pm
everywhere. it can be on this table and on the doorknob. food, water, everywhere. the reason why we are having a problem with this even though they call it stomach flu, it's not a flu. flu you need about 1,000 particles to get it. how do you prevent it? it will go on its own. you have diria, nausea and vo t vomiting. the hand sanitizers may not work very well. washing your hands is a way to go and cook your foot to 140 degrees. it doesn't disappear easily. if you feel part of the kitchen is contaminated, this is the area where a lot of people constantly touch everything. get rid of all that food. >> everything is contaminated. >> on a ship they controlled it, cdc controlled it. they only eight from that place.
1:40 pm
>> they can possibly die from this. hydrate. >> if you have a stomach virus or the norovirus, you may need to be hydrated with the iv bag. >> wash your hands all the time. >> don't touch your mouth. you can't get your hands to your mouth. >> be careful, guys. be careful. >> you know about the e cigarettes market said as a safer alternative. why are they coming under fire? >> do you really have to smoke no matter what it is? there is something more serious than bad breath. really? do you brush your teeth every day? if you don't brush your teeth every day, maybe you are okay. doctors will tell us, next. ♪

it's a misconception to say that cigarette is not safe. we have worked so hard for decades to reduce the number of cigarette smoking now to say that this is safe it's a misconception and people have to be careful. this is good for somebody who is a real heavy smoker.have has tried everything. can't get off and cannot quit. they cand see how use this on the way out toward quitting. but, by having this in the market, you are encouraging kids the whole oral the sensation of having some of this. the numberer of high school students using this has doubled over the last 15 years. and i think that's going to take that generation back to the smoking zone.

in minors. they are getting it from parents and on the street. the one thing positive about it, if it were in the doctor doctor's hands, there was a study that came out of britain that shows it is as effective as the patch and an overall smoking cessation. if it were in the doctor's hands, i would occasionally use it to help a heavy smoker quit that is out of control. it is a gateway drug to get into the nicotine. the next thing you know -- >> how do you quit? >> there many behavioral changes to quit. this is not the way to go. if it's in the hands of doctors, it's not safe. you don't know what's in it. that's the thing. it's not regulated. i said it last week.
