1:00 am
but the alternative is government force that leaves everyone for. that's our show. see you next week. >> this is super bowl boulevard. big game. >> on this super bowl sunday, barack obama ready for face off with bill o'reilly. why is he playing ball with a network he resents? >> a former chris christie claims the governor knew about the bridge closure and isn't telling the truth and christie reports back to the "new york times" for this report. >> with the big game hours away, i talked with fox sports former football star about what players think of the media circus surrounding the super bowl and the treacherous terrain facing black athletes. >> have you as an african-american player gotten that abuse?
1:01 am
>> i still do. i don't think it ever goes away. there are a lot of ignorant people. a lot of anything orant people would look at people for their race rather than them as a person. >> aaron andrews speaks about herman telling of the rant by richard sherman of seattle. >> what everyone wants to know, what was going through your mind when richard sherman was getting emotional? >> i better not mess this up. >> this is "media buzz." >> broncos and shocks are not -- and seahawks are not the only ones headed for a showdown, barack obama meets with bill o'reilly despite the president's distaste for fox news.
1:02 am
>> are you being treated fairly by fox news? >> i would say that the news guys try to do a good job, although, face it, fox news has a point of view. >> they will go toe to toe today >> we have contributing editor of american conservative magazine, fox news contributors and fox news analyst, juan williams. president obama is complaining about fox so why is he sitting down with o'reilly? >> three word. bill o'reilly. bill o'reilly. and, bill o'reilly. there are other reasons, how many people watched super bowl? 1308 -- 108 million. >> he cannot turn down bill o'reilly because he in the last two presidential interviews actually gave him a real fair shot. last year, 2011 he called him a big name liberal who intruded on
1:03 am
your personal freedom but allowed the president to talk. he is trying to reach out to moderates. there are policy issues he wants to sell and if he is eastbound as sitting down with o'reilly, better for him. >> clearly fox gets under his skin so he keeps bringing up, why is he consorting with the likes of o'reilly? laurie thinks it is because they get along so well. >> i didn't say that. >> he is past all people and you have to reach out and show popularity. he does try and take the dig with fox which i think fox is bias against me he will say, which i don't think so fair, but the real reality is the president says i don't like fox news but really it is that he doesn't like reporters if you listen to the "new york times" regarding the secrecy, and the
1:04 am
former editor of the "washington post" or mark sanger, this is a control freak administration, the hostility is not to fox but the media in general. he is president so he has to go on. >> i wonder, juan, whether the president secretly enjoys combat with o'reilly or things this kind of interview can help him? >> it hasn't been, usually, i think bill o'reilly tries to mad and last time he got the president to agree to do something for wounded warriors, if you recall. you have to keep in mind, i don't think there is any question that the president doesn't like fox. i can tell you that. i think that fox has been at times especially in our opinion journalism, very antagonistic to the president. the part that is interesting here, you go back a little bit and you get people like anita dunn, the idea was to delegitimize fox and we should
1:05 am
not participate in the pools and people, and i know this personally, i came under pressure, why do i work there and legitimize fox news? the answer is, fox news is legitimate news. we do news here. i get to say what i want to say. in the interview today, the president gets to say what he wants to say to bill o'reilly in a way that comes through to lauren's point to a massive audience and says, i don't discriminate against fox news so you liberals and moderates and independents, guess what? i do business with everyone. >> fox news personality is like sean hannity, so strong and polarizing, they overshadow. but ed henry, he was elected president of the white house correspondents association. you do not get honor from mostly liberal colleagues unless they think you are fair. >> this come after the state of the union which drew a record low, 14 year row in the ratings,
1:06 am
and got tepid reviews from the liberal commentators. we are talking about the super bowl in new jersey i will by have the to another new jersey story. a member of chris christie's inner circle town on him in the george washington scandal his claims are getting very different treatment in the media. christie said he was anger over the high school acquaintance he named to the agency that runs the bridge and now the lawyer says in a letter that and i quote, "evidence exists, as well, tying mr. christie to having knowledge of the lane closures during the period when the lanes were closed contrary to what the governor stated publicly in a two hour press conference." the not not and msnbc, they have been all over and fox news has been more restrained and more skeptical. >> the state's leading newspaper is saying, if this is true the government must resign. >> the official official who engineered this, said the new jersey governor knew more than he had said and there is evidence. >> the potential blockbuster in
1:07 am
the chris christie bridge scandal. >> the evidence exists tie him to having knowledge. he knew? he knew? is that what you are saying? why not say that. >> is this a blockbuster for the medicinia? >> no, i think that it came out late friday afternoon, i was on twitter and everyone went "smoking gun, it's over, he will have to resign." suddenly, everyone stepped back, and we looked at the motives of wildstein, trying to get money for his legal bills and trying at this point to save his own skin. >> he is trying to get immunity and he did not provide any evidence that the lawyer says exists. at the same time, he could be damaging to the man he worked for. >> doesn't that make it an important story? >> it could be. "new york times" had to amend
1:08 am
the story originally, make a correction. look this is the new york city media market, and a reason he was so famous in the first place is the new york city media market. the media market has turned a traffic cone into a mountain and the level of exaggeration that he should resign over a traffic cone? it is a little overkill and after a few days the media are realizing, maybe they overbit on the story. >> juan, the online story in the "new york times" was written on deadline said that wildstein and i quote, "had the evidence to prove it," and the story was rewritten and that happens all the time. and stuck to the vaguer evidence. "new york times" posts the
1:09 am
letter and everyone was writing and talking about it could have their own interpretation of what he was saying. >> that is legitimate. the headline was an overstatement. to think that people now perceive "new york times" as having an adversarial relation ship with christie is interesting. over the course of christie's career "new york times" has treated him pretty fairly. christie has been the darling of the new york media you were referring to. the bigger point is this is now death by a thousand cuts by christie and it is not stopping, and it will likely to get worse. there are other people that he fired, the deputy chief of staff, when they do the interviews, guess what? in will be more allegations and charges that the truth is tied directly to chris christie and he is --. >> he is also very much still showing his...feisty side. that e-mail that came out
1:10 am
reported by "politico". >> this is that e-mail said was leaked and probably was intended to leak to his friends and allies, a media firestorm was set up by slopping reporting by "new york times" on the question of the "evidence," or alleged evidence. >> anyone would see that he is going on the absolute defensive here. or offensive, actually, because he is trying so hard to win over the public that he feels he is losing. >> it was hilarious to see the memo, by the way, he was the bad guy in high school. a little overkill. what we are saying here, the media can say there is an appearance of impropriety and barrage of allegations every what. folks, there must be something here. it could just be all smoke. >> the polls right now, the media polling and people are polling intently, he is dropping now, across the board including
1:11 am
among republicans. it is too early, but that is what chris christie is up against. you look at msnbc they have been feasting on this story but he was their darling for the longest time. >> as was said in a tweet "show us the evidence." >> a guy aligned with the governor announcing to the world i will turn on him and it will get more ugly, but, juan --. >> the point is, there are two words that make this not as bad as everyone thought it was in the beginning "evidence exists," not him saying, i have the evidence, it is that it exists and he may know that it exists but whether it is going to come forward is a different story. >> yes, i think even on days when nothing is happening in the story it leads many of the msnbc prime teams down that path, but do you think fox in light of the
1:12 am
latest allegation from wildstein has been underplaying the story. >> initially, that is the charge fox was ignored this to protect chris christie. >> not ignoring it but certainly -- you look at the body now, fox is on the story in an aggressive marry and i was on camera when we did the press conference. what you see is that it is msnbc that is overreacting. if you watch their coverage here, are they still on that story? don't they have anything else to talk about? >> the press conference went on to two hours and i was bored, frankly, saying the same thing over and over and over again was dull. >> the consensus is the story is not going over any time soon although it seemed to have been in danger of running out of the gas. >> remember to tweet us we will
1:13 am
read your comments at the end of the program. there bringing up e of monica liewinski. and erin andrews on how they dealt with richard sherman. >> i was feeling a lot of pressure because i knew i'd be crucified if i asked a stupid question.
1:14 am
1:15 am
1:16 am
rand paul yaeps appearance on meet the press gave me a deja vu. >> i did not have sexual relations with -- >> that's right. the kentucky senator who is eyeing a presidential run of his
1:17 am
own used a democrat's war on clinton to attack his awful conduct back in the '90s. >> and i think, really, the media seems to have given president clinton a pass on this. he took advantage of a girl that was 20 years old and an intern in his office. >> gist pinkerton, when david gregory asked whether hillary clinton should be judged on what happened 15 or so years ago. he said, well, i'm not saying that, but with the clintons, it's hard to separate one or the other. why bring this up now? >> in fairness to paul, he said your wife did this interview with vogue. paul in some sense was defending his wife's point of view. >> he could have criticized it like all -- >> the country probably thinks hitting on internals in sexual harassment is a bad thing. in d.c., it's old news. i think paul brought up a legitimate issue that at the clinton's conduct over the last 40 years is a genuine issue to the country. >> but we're talking about
1:18 am
hillary clinton. hillary clinton did nothing wrong in that instance. she got up, she defended her husband on matt lauer by saying the right wing media conspiracy was something -- >> because she was lied to. >> because she was lied to by her husband. what are we going to say to her now as she's running? how did you feel when that happened? i just feel like there are a lot of other substantive issues that we should be talking to hillary clinton about. benghazi, syria, a lot of them. >> the next day, joe scarborough said the republicans shouldn't bring this up because of backlash. but perhaps the media have the responsibility to bring it up in terms of a hillary clinton campaign. do they? >> no. we've had this argument as a nation. we've impeached bill clinton over this. >> we didn't do it. >> the american people, right. bill clinton is now one of the most popular elder statesmen in american life. >> which suggests the country -- >> the country is over it. >> terrible, excusable, and the
1:19 am
country -- >> but you just heard from lauren, right? which is that the democrats always want to make out the war on women issue. this comes back to you are now blaming the wife for the misbehavior of the husband? again, that is not good. let me just say the larger issue here is hillary clinton being the inevitable candidate now on the democratic side, the polling leaks at 72% of democrats basher? and republicans not only want to keep the lewinski thing in there, they would like benghazi to come back to life to bring her down from her tremendously high numbers. >> senator paul says the media gave mr. clinton a pass. that was certainly not true, we talked about this basically every day on television. >> and having chased monica lewinski's car everywhere. >> but it is true it almost never comes up today. you're saying man it should and lauren saying maybe it should preveal how about hellry? >> rand paul did a horrible
1:20 am
gaffe by letting himself get dragged into this because the political window has closed on this particular issue. paul made a mistake. i think he did speak to a concern of people and if hillary is the inevitable county and the inevitable president, we should be scrutinizing everyone about her life. >> what did it have to do with hillary? >> well, it's unclear what it had to do with hellry, except that she continues to work with him closely on, travrm, the clinton foundation with the "new york times" shows to investigate thoroughly in may of last year. then the media dropped that story. but i think the whole relationship, how they raised several hundred million dollars at least with -- >> but that's a different issue. >> it is a different issue, but it's history. >> and it's his character, is what you're saying? >> it's the couple. >> i think we can say that they're married .they are a team. all right. juan williams, jim pinkerton, that's coming coming by.
1:21 am
before we go to break, if you haven't seen this, the weather channel's jam cantore was doing this and he had a vigorous response. >> we have not gotten into the worst part of this storm yet. that is to come a little bit later on tonight. so, obviously, here at the college of charleston, they're already having a good time. >> ouch. did you see that knee? don't mess with jim. next on this super bowl sunday. michael strahan, the problems that he faces as an african-american xhen taim tater and working with kelly rippa.
1:22 am
1:23 am
1:24 am
michael strahan has become a big time television talent since his football days. fox sports held its media day in new york this week shortly before the cold weather super
1:25 am
bowl in new jersey. i grabbed the big guy for an interview. >> michael strahan, welcome. >> thank you. thank you. >> when you were with the giants, you played in two super bowls. what did you make of this media zoo? >> you know, to me, it was never a zoo because you're playing in new york city. it's the media capital of the world. it was a normal day. >> media capital of the world? all the tabloid guys? yeah, well, you get -- that's new york city. football and entertainment are all in one now. so the tabloids are just like sports illustrated at some point. they all fold in and mold in to be the same thing. >> but this is what they were trying to do. michael, michael, over here. weren't they trying to get you to make some news, which means say something -- >> of course. they want a sound bite and i think it all depends on the player you handle it. if you understand that going in, you won't be goaded into making a comment that's going to come back to bite you. >> you never did that? >> no. i had fun with it. i was singing. i controlled the interview. that's something you can do, which a lot of players don't --
1:26 am
>> even when you started as a player? >> no. as i player, i would answer questions and get myself in trouble. but then i realized years later that you are only asking me questions and you can only get out of it what i give you. you ask the questions, but i control the answers, i control whether it's a funny interview or serious interview. the player has more controls than i think guys understand. >> can you be pun funny in this interview? >> of course. >> because we need the ratings. a lot of these guys are with you, have played again. do you pull your punch us because you know what it's like to be down there in the dirt? >> no, no, i say what i feel bauk because i don't like any of them, anyway. there you go. i already got you laughing. no, you don't pull your punches. if you're being honest and if a guy is being honest with himself, he'll respect your opinion and still have a relationship with you on a good
1:27 am
level. if you're being malicious or if you're saying something because i don't like this team or i don't like this player personally, that's the wrong way to approach them. you don't always like someone personally, but you have to respect what the guy does on the football field. that's what our job is. it's all in the way you say things and all in the way you present it. i don't think any player has had a problem with it when it's handled the right way. >> why is it in so many of you you see the athletes say, well, just taking it one day at a time. we just beat a very good football team. i'm just trying to keep my focus out there. in other words, it's like they're trying to be boring. >> guys are trying to be boring because no one wants to have the coach say come into my office, son. why would you say this? why would you do that? you don't want to be the sound bite guy. you're almost scared into not being yourself. and that's the hard part about dealing with the media is to be yourself and not be afraid of that, but also being smart enough to know how to craft your
1:28 am
answers to not get in trouble. and those are the typical answers. >> is it drilled into you you? >> we've all watched tv, we've all watched these interviews. it's the safe way to do it. >> one guy didn't do that -- >> exactly. >> richard sherman, very emotional after his team won the championship. a lot of people hated it and a lot of people loved it. what did you make of it? it was so different. >> you know what? i had no problem with it. they grab a guy right after making a big play that sends the team to the super bowl and people are so fired up because he was still pumped up. and everyone loves to ask the football player, what goes on out there on the field? what's happening out there? what kind of smack talk do you -- well, there you see it. so don't be afraid of it when you see it. don't characterize a guy because he's emotional. that's how it is. you have to be a little crazy.
1:29 am
you have to be a little arrogant. you have to be able to talk smack in order to survive. and for people to finally see that, it scared them. and i don't know why there was such an adverse reaction to it. >> i've got my new york headline, strahan football players are crazy. >> of course they are. >> as you know, the reaction to richard sherman online, there was a lot of racist junk, a lot of nasty stuff. you've had some controversy in your career. have you ever had had that kind of abuse? i still get that you no. >> really? >> yes. i don't think that ever goes away. there are a lot of ignorant people out there who look at people for their race instead of them as a person. that is one thing i learned growing up on a military base. you have to learn how to get along with each other because you nooud need it to survive. you learn to look past color.
1:30 am
you look at the person. and it's sad in this day and age, but is it something that will ever end? i hope. but it was sad to see it in the context of this richard sherman incident. >> but when it's been directed at you, you say as a public figure you get it. is it depressing? >> you can't let the opinion of someone who doesn't know you affect you. >> that's right. >> yeah. and you can't let the opinion of someone who doesn't know you really affect your attitude, how you go about your day. the fact that they acknowledge you and know you probably says a lot right there. and i look at a lot of things right there as frustration on the part of that perpendicular. if someone has a problem with you, that's their problem, not your problem. >> when you were playing, you might have thought about a broadcast career in the future, but did you ever think you would be the new regis? >> no. well, yeah, actually, i did throw that out there as the first time i went on a guest. >> the first time you went on with kelly ripa? >> the first time i went on,
1:31 am
regis was still there. but i never thought i would get the job and take over for regis. i'm a little taller, a little darker. but i take it as a compliment. >> but was it a big adjustment to do that kind of daily talk show? lots of topics, not having to do@of xs and os? >> no. it's more similar than people would be led on to believe. and i love them both the same. and i have such an interest level in football, obviously, but also in what's going on every day. the only real adjustment for me has been my flying schedule and my sleeping schedule and my vacationing schedule because i don't have a lot of time now. >> and you're constantly on the airplane. >> i fly back and forth during the football season every week. >> so no matter what you're talking about with kelly ripa, you say it's more entertainment. >> yes. but i think it was a bigger surprise for everybody else that
1:32 am
here is this football player who can get on here and talk about other things outside of football. and athletes -- and not just football players, but athletes in general or people in general are diverse. this is not the only thing you can do. and football was not the only thing i can do. and i hope that people realize that. just because you've done one thing and you've done it and what people may consider well, it doesn't mean that's the only thing we can do. we need to stop page from pigeon holing people into thinking that's the only thing they can do. we can do other things. i never get it mixed up where i go hey, teary bradshaw. that's not happening. >> all this build up has become such a cultural event in american life, the media, isn't it designed to sort of juice the ratings and build up interest in the big game? >> of course. >> it's almost like the game is over-shadowed in a way, the commercials. >> yeah. they build it up. and the great thing about football is this. there aren't 82 games, there's
1:33 am
not 140 something games. there are six team regular season games. every week is important. we build up every week like it's the last time he ever see your team play. now, this is the last time for the season, for these teams to watch their favorite teams play, of course there's a build up. and of course it's for ratings. of course sometimes you look and go, okay with, enough is enough. but at the same time, i think it's a great opportunity for us to learn more about players, learn more about teams, about coaches. and it gets me excited for the game. >> you've got me excited. michael strahan, thanks very much. >> thank you, man. >> and michael strahan was voted yesterday into the nfl hall of fame. congratulations. more from super bowl media day in a moment as we talk to aieri andrew he about her confron at a timetation with richard sherman and

a rant seen around the world when rip arrested sherman went off after playing the play that sent the the seahawks to today's super bowl the. >> take me through the final play. >> i'm the best in the game. when you give me someone lick crabtree that is the result. don't you of talk about me. >> who was talking about you? >> crabtree. don't you open your mouth about the best. >> i spotted the fox sportscaster at the media day in new york and we ran over with our cameras. >> erin andrews what everyone wants to know, what was going through your mind when sherman was getting emotional on the sidelines? >> i better not mess this up. >> you were feeling the pressure? >> i knew i would be crucified if i asked a stupid question. i was look down, concentrating

in our press picks, this is so far over the line, that it's incomprehensible. msnbc spewed pure hatred about a serial bowl ad featuring a racially mixed family. they tweeted maybe the right wing will hate it but everyone else will go aww, the adorable new cheerios ad with biracial family. msnbc's disgusting message with a live and fighting hate with loving images. msnbc deleted the tweet. that didn't stop others from saying they would boycott the network until they apologized. what is going on with the culture at msnbc? after melissa harris-perry aapology for mocking mitt romney's adopted black grandson, this is the last thing that
