on to any aircraft that are flying from the u.s. to russia. this following up from the warning yesterday that terrorists might try to fill something like toothpaste tubes with explosives, with the hopes of bringing down a plane. despite all of this the president of the international olympic committee says these games nor different than any other. listen. >> we had threats on athens, maybe you remember the situation in salt lake city. there were many. so you cannot single out these games in this way. >> but those measured words will do little to assuage the fears of many u.s. officials and others as these games get formally underway, harris. >> actually, about the games themselves, there have been some pretty big problems and even some new ones today. >> oh, yes, there have.

the opening ceremony got underware four hours ago, and take a look at these pictures we have from there now. organizers unveiled the olympic rings, five giant snowflakes rising into the air at the arena. one by one the snowflakes began to morph into rings and join together but the fifth one stayed a snow flake, leaving the four rings hanging in the air. the organizers darkened the rings and moved them away just as the introduced russian president vladimir putin. meantime, a twitter account that reports problems at the games has racked up more than a quarter million followers. that's about 230,000 more than the official account for the sochi games, but to end on a positive note, the olympic cauldron has been lit. the torch carried on the final stage by a legendary hockey play and a leash time gold metalist

specifically, because russia, from what i've read, deals with terrorists very differently than we do in this country. how so? >> well, they don't have the constitutional constraints we have, first of all. that works for them and also works against them, because they have developed an enemy that has a vengeance in their heart that is so great they're willing to -- they're only 300 miles away -- they're withing to go and lay they're life down in order to get their point through, and this has been pushed back and back into them by russia. the other thing that really bothers me is, if something is going to happen and russia is the one that is going to respond to this, they don't have a great track record of actually saving a lot of lives. in some circumstances they've killed more people than the terrorists. >> an interesting point. you're alluding to the caucasus region because they want to see government change which is different from somebody who wantses to scare. they actually have political agenda. talk about our role with russia.
12:07 pm
you say you're not completely convinced they can handle anything. why aren't they taking our help? >> well, this gets into the whole political realm. a good example of this was boston. boston was an example where russia didn't share completely the information they had with us, and the information we had didn't get connected with that. even though we have an incredible intelligence system throughout the world, the fact that we don't have great communication with russia and they're very secretive before what is going on in a lot of ways, it may not look good on the world stage, that plays greatly against our ability to actually go in there and defend our people. >> i heard what you were telling our audience. i if you're over there stick going to be aware of everything around you. >> avoid from -- civilian's area, even if you're participating, avoid large groups people, avoid mass transit. >> hard to do, it's the
