tv   The Five  FOX News  February 7, 2014 7:00pm-8:01pm PST

7:00 pm
this is what keeps the lights on. tonight. there are no words, but follow me on megyn kelly. hi, everybody, bob beckel, dana perino, dana is moving, it is 5:00 in new york city, and this is five. jay leno's first night on "the tonight show" was on may 25th, 1992. he made tens of millions of americans laugh over the years, but we rarely got a glimpse of the softer side of jay. last night this was the exception. >> this has been the greatest222 years of my life. first year of the show i lost my mom, second year, i lost my dad.
7:01 pm
then my brother died. and after that i was pretty much out of family. and the folks here became my family. and i'm really excited for jimmy fallon. you know, it is fun to kind of be the old guy and sit back here and see where the next generation takes the institution. and in closing, i want to quote johnny carson, who was the greatest guy to ever do this job. and he said i bid you all a heartfelt -- >> but the night was not entirely sentimental, here is part of his classic monologue. >> thank you, i don't like good-byes. nbc does. i don't care. well, tonight is our last show for real. i don't know if you can get fired three times. i get the hint. the worst thing about losing this job, i am no longer covered by nbc, i have to sign up for obamacare. >> had to get one of those in there. >> yeah, that made me smile, a
7:02 pm
big old pepsodent grin, that was a cute one, i just love this guy. i don't want to say good-bye, i just want to say hello. i just hope he gets picked up somewhere else. >> now, bob, are you a jay leno fan? >> i was waiting to see whether his cat and dog died. listen -- >> terrible. >> no, i mean look, it is sad. i don't follow these late night shows but it is amazing to me how many people do and how much they care about it. there are more stories about these people, particularly if they get troubled or fired, can't they just have a no drama late night show? >> i don't know, no drama like right here. >> if dana has her wi-fi off, that is still drama. >> or a diet coke. >> or the dreams for dana. >> no, i had dreams of my five last night. it was not really a comedy. >> so what do you think about that? >> not easy to do, not easy to say good-bye to a thing that you
7:03 pm
have helped built. all the good-byes, it takes forever. i actually am not for the big long good-bye. i feel like we have been doing this for a month, this saying good-bye for jay leno. but we'll see him do more. so i think it -- the comedy, these people that are that talented figure out a way to reinvent themselves, as younger people come up, challenges, how can you do amazing things every day and look forward to people following in his foot steps, not from the comedy, but the rapper -- >> you want him to say good-bye, jimmy fallon hello -- >> i can do anything you want. >> how about the good-byes? >> people are calling it the end of an era, it is not the end of an era. johnny carson was the end of an era, because when everybody watched him, he left. jay leno is not going to leave. you don't understand, he has done this twice.
7:04 pm
like going through his marriages, for him, in three weeks he will be back doing another show. warning to jay, 3:00 a.m. is mine. as for jimmy fallon, leno constantly talks about jimmy fallon, and the strategy is, screw you, conan, he is saying this is because you basically got me canned. it is like making out with your ex, if people say he is being gracious, there is not, there is a strategy. >> hang in there, jay was on his engagement delivering a funny yet poignant monologue. more fun followed, oprah, carol, jack black delivered a tribute in the form of a "sound of music" parody. >> you'll be back here next year. if fallon tanks.
7:05 pm
>> so long, farewell, i'm here so what the hell for your last show? ♪ ♪ ♪ so long, farewell, you really raised the bar ♪ if you were me you would buy them all a car ♪ [ cheers and applause ] >> that was cute. >> that was fun. >> i liked it. >> but again, not a big moment for anyone under 40. most people have no idea because they're watching differently. people are not saying oh, my god, it is not the way it used to be. for example, this is nothing compared to how people felt when "breaking bad" ended. >> are you projecting right now? >> no, so what -- >> because i would take the opposite of that. i find that moving --
7:06 pm
>> 20 years, i grew up with jay leno. >> first black president -- >> dana is exactly right. we have to say good-bye. it has almost been a year to say good-bye to him since he has been on the air. but the fact is, he is going to be doing something. he is the kind of guy who can't sit down. johnny carson retreated, wouldn't come out and talk to people. i thought that was kind of cool. jay will be back out. i thought kim kardashian will be on this thing, is the heat too much, the plastic is going to melt? >> she is on the singing part of it. see bob there in the white dress, i really like him, he is the winner, i don't even know why they let him go. i like him better than jimmy fallon, i'm sorry, always have. i do. >> oprah -- >> i just don't like the
7:07 pm
blubbering over this. we can only blubber for about two and a half minutes. >> six minutes more, and then -- oprah took it very seriously. because carol burnett, she kind of knows she can't sing that well. she was going for it but oprah tried to sing well. >> she didn't do a bad job. >> i guess the heat was down in the room. >> bob, it looks like you have a tie -- >> that was the one thing -- >> the reason for just about everything. >> they were trying for the under 40. >> that is what it was, it was a demographic -- >> all right, how about this? >> they should have had a jog -- >> how about this. what is next for jay? >> why don't you find a hobby and work on old cars? >> actually, jay does work on old cars. he has a whole garageful of them. >> well, okay, jay, maybe with your new found time you can
7:08 pm
finally invite me over to your garage. >> jay, do what i do. use your down time to paint. >> i love it. check it out. >> jay, i know you're happily married to a wonderful woman who you never cheat on, but if she ever gives you a one-time hall pass, i'm your girl. >> why would i give that? let him figure it out for himself. i have a job. >> or you can do this, a lot of people who are just sitting around to do nothing and make money, they sell meth. you can do that. >> see, you're liking it more now, that part was pretty funny. i'm amazed at the promotion and the expense and all of the effort. there was a lot of love, obviously they're on the staff level at the network. there was a lot of love for jay leno and so they wanted to make the good-bye as warm as possible so they put a lot of money into it. now, will they put a
7:09 pm
corresponding number? are we going to talk about jimmy fallon the next month? but i'll be kind of interested to see the promotion they put on with jimmy fallon. >> they're trying to get everybody to watch and make a lot of fan fare to get people like, their eyeballs focused on "the tonight show" again. one of the things that was so great, the staff loved him. this guy is a class act. they have nothing bad to say about him. >> well, not everybody. >> well -- no, no, i like leno, not a fan of his writing staff. for some reason they have a knack for coming up with jokes days after they appeared with is where. >> by the way, they made fun of me on that show and i still like
7:10 pm
them. after my divorce. >> well, they make a fortune on the show, not a lot of expense except for the host you have to pay and a few other people. but by and large, they make a whole lot of money. >> the reason they spend so much time on the late show when you turn the show off at night and turn the tv back on in the morning -- >> martha stewart was asking him for a date. >> and she didn't ask you, remember? we were setting that up. >> is she still available? >> she is taunting you. martha is not bob's type. >> we try it one more time. did we circle back on that? >> yes, we did. conan o'brien, david letterman, and conan o'brien shared the late night spot. this is how they said good-bye. >> nbc will finally be able to show somebody okay with passing the torch. >> our friend, jay leno, 22 years as host of the tonight show. 22 years, that is remarkable.
7:11 pm
congratulations on a wonderful run. and i'll tell you something, if i was jay leno and i was retiring you know what i would do? i would go out and buy myself a car. >> so to jay, thank you very much. he has been a great guy. we're going to miss him. >> all right, we'll give -- i don't know, david letterman -- has he completely lost it? letterman? >> he is tired. >> are there anymore predictable jokes? >> i think a lot of these jokes are recycled. if you get one good zinger in a night -- how come nobody is ever replacing letterman, why are they just trying to go for one seat? no, i'm serious, he is sitting there ruling the roost. and everybody else, says conan in the chair, then leno, then fallon in the chair. >> cbs doesn't play the game of having the late nights. but this is the longest 12 minutes in television. and i want to say that in regard

7:19 pm
they have the olympics team -- that is writing the copy for somebody like bob costas to read from the teleprompter. and what they need to have is somebody from the political desk or the state department, the nbc reporter that covers the state department. because if bob costas is not going to be up to speed, the tragedy that happened in syria, somebody should be there to help him. and should just fax him, you know what? this does not exactly sound right. to bob costas, who is reading it, he is saying wait a minute, are you sure? yeah, we're going to call president putin a peacemaker? is that right? i just think they fell down on the job, the staff. >> so nbc hosting the olympics, bob costas works for nbc, they're doing everything they can to make it look less corrupt, less dangerous, more peaceful.
7:20 pm
vladimir putin is a peacekeeper, he is playing the corporate game. i agree with you dana, when he reads that he has got to be thinking am i reading something i would be saying? the political arm of nbc says read this, i mean, there are terror threats, threats of the hotels falling apart. corruption. the issues with where they stand on gay marriage. they're trying to downplay all that stuff and make it look like peaceful, fun games. >> so yeah, is nbc some kind of russian propaganda network? >> there was also something said about the crackdown on gay rights so he didn't go completely in the bag with putin. however, costas opinions are not why you hire costas, and the only person who knows that is costas. and a bit about obama talking about russian exceptionalism, the same way he finds our world
7:21 pm
silly, is that while he is making obama into his own nesting guy, putin is a bad guy who is good at it, obama is a bad guy who is good at it. >> and you thought he made that statement, i speak strongly to him. putin does not respect him. that is a fact. >> i have a feeling about bob costas, when he talks about guns is very heart felt. he wanted to take that opportunity. i agree with dana, somebody wrote this thing. if i could have sat down with bob and said, i read this, bob, this is not right. this guy has caused more troubles for us in eastern europe and threatened more eastern european countries, not to mention the fact he was one of the great modern mass murderers in the world. >> you know what? costas' eyeball was very red and droopy. it should be the official mascot. all right, let's take a
