tv Housecall FOX News February 9, 2014 1:30pm-2:01pm PST
1:30 pm
that's it for today. i hope you enjoyed the show. until next week, i hope you learn to be more of a healthy you. hi, everyone. i'm jamie colbiment and i guarantee you that you will be glad you tuned in today for "sunday housecall." >> every week, i'm eric shawn. welcome us to "housecall." welcoming us is marc siegal. >> and wait, there's more. you get dr. david samadi, chief of robotic surgery at lennox hospital. doctors, welcome. great to have you here. there was a new warning that come out from the american heart association this weekend. a lot of people are now confused.
1:31 pm
what it said was that women are actually at higher risk of having a stroke tha men. so doctor siegal, why would that be true? and is it? >> i want women out there to listen carefully to this. this is extremely important. this is the american heart association and the american stroke association. and the reason is that women get strokes more than 50% of people who get strokes are women. more men get them than women. it's the number three cause of death among women. number four cause among men. so why women? specific reasons. women when pregnant are at higher risks of stroke, especially with flood pressure. if you are on birth control pills, it will increase your risk. if you go on birth control pills, get your blood pressure checked first because blood pressure and birth control, bad combination. if you are a high blood pressure and on birth control pills, your risk is up.
1:32 pm
women on wirt control pills, if you are pregnant and smoking, the risks go up. here's what i want people to know. i'm not trying to scare people but inform them of this. migraine headaches, very, very, very common in women. four types more than men. and if you have high grains and you smoke, your risk of stroke goes up. all of these things there are sub categories, and these add up to women being at higher risk. so i say, exercise more, eat fruit and vegetables, don't smoke, cut down on alcohol. >> what's new about this morning, dr. samadi, because they always said people who have migraines, particularly women, are more at risk for stroke. and if you are smoking and pregnant, change the channel, because there's no hope for you. >> well, we don't want people to change the channel. they love this and come in from every angle. the truth is so far everything we have spoken about in the past has been high blood pressure, cholesterol and has been also diabetes. those were the risk factors, so
1:33 pm
we haven't put those in yet. there are people who are ringing in the ears and et cetera with stroke. this is something new. they also want you to know that if you're going to become pregnant, once you are into pregnancy with preeclampsia, it is hard to start it so late. 100,000 men and women are dying from stroke. it's a serious problem and we want to make sure we prevent this. if you're a smoker or on birth control, view the risk factors that increases blood clots. women, in general -- >> we still don't have the answer from you both why women are -- >> there's a difference men and women as a result of hormonal
1:34 pm
changes, whether it is birth control pills or stress can do this, depression can do this, a migraine. there are changes that can cause you. if somebody is having a stroke right in front of you, you need to know about arm weakness, blurry speech and time. >> and this ups your possibility of going to the hospital, but what about hormone replacement therapy? thank you, doctor, should we reconsider women of a certain age to do that because that can put you more at risk or less? >> dr. colby, i think that's why there's an increased risk of
1:35 pm
hormonal changes. women are living longer, and the most important thing at all is we are not looking for it enough. today we are going to get women to look for it more. david gave out fast and strong signals. women need to be on the lookout for baby signals. >> does baby aspirin work? >> if the bp is 150/100, then start taking calcium pills. if you have severe blood pressure before you get these pills, women over 75 need to look for atrial fibrillation, irregular heartbeat. and that's good guide line.
1:36 pm
they let you go into pregnancy with too higher a blch. they say 150/100. i want women to have controlled blood pressure when pregnant. >> staying in a weight scale, that's true. dr. samadi, how does this change? >> the american cancer society recommends starting at the age of 40 all the way to 84 every year. but that's quite expensive. that's about $10 billion package. the second package which is this one, started from u.s. task force in 2009. and now this study that was published in the internal medicine coming from ucsf
1:37 pm
whether you will miss the package. and the worst from all of them is a european one between the age of 50 and 70. that's at $2.6 billion. the big question you have to ask is, what is the price of saving someone's life? the cost is about $250,000 per year. all of us are a big advocate of screening, whether it's a mammogram -- oh, of course. >> i agree where david is going with this. i think that knowledge is power. and if we do mammograms and they find a problem, women want to know. here's the data on mammograms.
1:38 pm
89% of sensitive in early picking up bra-- there's qualitf life to consider. there's not a woman out there that wouldn't want to know they have breast cancer. it's up to the doctor, and these guidelines, by the way, i disagree with these. this is what the author says. what's the risk factor? if you have dense breasts, it is harder to follow it. follow a trend. i think every year should be a starting point. if i tell my patients every year, they are never going to co come. i think it's an art. what you have the abnormal information. do you do a biopsy? do you go to the best raid ya t
1:39 pm
radiologist? >> you are going to find false positives that can lead to treatment and damages, but i've always said that not every citizen is biopsied or in surgery. >> it is also self-examination, self-examination, self-examination. drinking distilled water may have its benefits, but it can also do some harm. and we'll give you a fir firsthand look at the toll of heroin addiction. when jake and n our own, we ate anything. but in time you realize the bett you eat,

1:43 pm
welcome back. there really aren't words that can describe the tragedy with the death of actor philip seymour hoffman, but it does shed a new light on heroin addiction. it can happen to anyone. this week our own dr. siegel visited a rehab center for a look at the real face of a horrible addiction. dr. siegel? >> you know, jamie, when i went in the door of phoenix house, i came up to somebody and said, can you tell me where so and so is? i thought he worked there. he didn't look like what my expectations of heroin was because the face of heroin is changing. there's an 85% change over the course of heroin use. 85% of the time it starts with prescription drugs. this is him with his beautiful young baby. it started this way with him. he went on prescription painkillers after a knee operation. the next thing you know, the doctor didn't want to prescribe them anymore, and said, look, you shouldn't be using them and
1:44 pm
he went out and got heroin. bam! he was addicted to heroin after a couple uses, big rush. he ended up in phoenix house. he's 32 years old and bought his first house at the age of 20. he's a big success story. now he said his love for his wife and young daughter will get him back. we'll hope he's right. let's take a look. >> people are shooting up one bag of dope and dying. >> why? >> i think you don't know -- you don't know what's in those bags. you don't know. you're taking a risk. you're depending on someone else to put something in that bag that you don't even know what it is, but those cravings are so deep that you are willing to take that chance just to get that next fix. people think of a certain picture that they have painted of what an addict is. i was in a company with 50 employees working underneath me. i have met doctors, priests, i have met lawyers, all going through the same thing.
1:45 pm
i have to constantly remind myself when waking up i'm given the gift of breathing again. and that if i just stay in that day and do what i'm supposed to do, god-willing, i can wake up tomorrow and do it again. >> he's a great human being. you hear him say he doesn't know what's in those bags, that's the problem. the bags are mixed with fentanol now. and the euphoria is what drives people in. >> well, heroin -- >> what do we do to stop this epidemic? >> we need to educate our children. i think if you look at heroin, for example, it's starting age is 14. it's coming to suburbs, it's not part of the inner city anymore, you're seeing the rich affluent kids getting involved in this. and the numbers have doubled, jamie. it used to be 166,000 in 2002 and now it is almost 400,000. the reason being that it's very cheap, it's extremely addictive, extremely dangerous.
1:46 pm
and on the way to college, there's peer pressure. and the problem with heroin is this craving part of it. that you can't get out of it. people go to rehab, for example -- >> if they are lucky enough to have access to it. >> if they make it that far, you're right. they go for ten days to two weeks, it's not enough. it may take months in order to get this. so i think you have to educate the children. >> can i ask you a quick question as to a surgeon? >> sure. >> i had surgery and the doctor wrote a prescription automatically. i picked it up at the pharmacy for 30vicadin. >> that's an excellent point. i was about to say this, this is a big message to us as doctors, we are writing too many of the narcotics for no good reason. that's where it started from. 80% of the heroin addicts are starting with the medications, they get hooked on them and can't get out of it. that's when they get into this kind of heroin. so what's the message to the children? lock up those pharmacy and the cabinets and make sure there's no exposure. that's really important. i'm glad you brought it up. >> jamie, you have a question to
1:47 pm
emphasize this, you get a different rush from heroin than the painkillers. so you say, oh, the painkillers, but when you get to the heroin -- >> they are good. >> but there's euphoria and the heroin is cheap. >> i asked you that question before we did this segment, it's a shame seeing him with his beautiful baby he doesn't get the yoeuphoria he needs for tha beautiful little girl. good luck to him. drinking distilled water can help you avoid consuming impurities they say, but is it also filtering out what you need when you drink water? distilled water, other water, bottled water, the doctors will fill us in.
1:51 pm
>> back now for our segment "should i worry" about everything that worries us. one viewer wrote and i quote, "many years ago my doctor told me to drink disspilled water but all this time, have i been missing certain minerals found in spring water or tap water? doctor, i thought were not supposed to drink distilled water. >> he is not supposed to be drink this for a long-term because it is going through a lost purifying, so you remove the minerals. stay away from having prolonged distilled water. it is not good. spring water is okay. people think it is coming from the mountain and it is fresh spring water, those bolts of water have a remember because they have all the b.p.a.'s and arsenic and others. the best is the tap water with a carbon activated filter. that is the best.
1:52 pm
there is also a site at www. water.epa.gov you can check your water quality by zip cope. with the carbon activated you get rid of the contaminants. >> the spring water is supposeed to be so great for you? sometimes you look at it and it says municipal water supply. what is that? >> exactly. exactly the point. >> listen, i want to go back to the distilled water. the purpose could be if you are in haiti or after that problem our hire with hurricane sandy where you cannot be sure there is bacteria or viruses in the water. then, yes. for the question, i don't think, and i am not in favor of it, i'm not if favor of it but he is not likely to have a problem of mineral loss from having been
1:53 pm
drinking this because 95 percent of the minerals that we get and we need, 95 percent of them, it comes from the food we eat. only 5 percent from the water. the estimate is you have to drink 1,800 glasses were tap water to get the magnesium you need for a daily requirement. over a long period of time, it ain't the greatest but i don't think it will land him in the hospital. it is not my choice but i don't think he should worry. >> do they bottle that distilled water in the b.p.a. bottles? >> the big question, we are learning more about this b.p.a. calling infertility and possibly cancer and thy beats so be careful with the bottled water. >> great information, fooled by the pretty picture on the bottled water. >> look at the label. does it say municipal water
1:54 pm

1:59 pm
