live from the fox news desk. first from the fox news desk, 100 million americans feeling the effects from the monster snow tearing across the northeast, it is now making a mess in the northeast and beyond. it is the biggest blast yet for the winter. some neighbors are turning on neighbors. they're calling it snow rage and it has put several people behind bars. the details coming up. first, i want to show you how big this thing is, the storm that barrelled through the south went over jackson, mississippi, up through atlanta, past raleigh where they got slammed, up through new york and boston and beyond, and still on the move as fox reports live tonight. up and down the coast it has created huge tie-ups on t roads and shut down the federal government in d.c. and left the world's busiest airport in atlanta deserted.

here, the forecasters are saying that the rain we feel right now will turn to snow in the next hour or so. already officials say the storm has killed at least 21 people nationwi nationwide, including a pregnant woman in new york. police say she died after a snow plow hit her. but doctors are trying to save her baby boy. we'll update you on that in just moments. and now, kids get the day off because of the snow. but not here in new york city, which left some parents happy because they want their kids in school and others furious. it didn't help when others in new york city called it a beautiful day during the downtown snowstorm. the event made al roker so mad he issued his forecast for the new mayor, one term. and wait until you see what happened with mayor de blasio on twitter, in minutes. and school officials in charlotte say they may have to

cancel part of spring break to make up for lost time. charlotte is where people had to spend the night in an airport, one place where major flights were grounded. one official said it could take a week. >> 75% of the flights are cancelled. they're stuck. >> sleeping on laptops and floors. it is everywhere. >> i can be here until friday. i don't want to, though. >> let's track where the latest delays are, we have the computerized map showing us where the big problems are. looks like charlotte is one of the main ones. >> here you see charlotte close s out completely, d.c., closing out completely, new york manages to get a few flights out but it is still a mess for thousands of travellers. now, this is where we are right now. you see new york, dallas, d.c., hardly any -- >> only three delayed, 73 cancelled --

>> all told, 6,000 flights cancelled today and already 6,000 -- 1,000 are cancelled tomorrow. many more delays. >> it will take a while, mark, thank you, and folks just having a lot of trouble traveling the roads. look at raleigh, abandoned cars litter the streets after what went down there yesterday. some people left their cars in the bone-chilling cold. others spent the night in a shopping mall. we have team fox coverage for you this night. let's get to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth, but first, we'll talk to steve. it actually looks deserted. >> reporter: yeah, it was pretty quiet but it actually was a busy day as folks hoped to get flights they couldn't get. nature dealt us a one-two punch, more inches on top of that. and there is very little traffic this time of night and still a lot of cancellations.

but finally they got it open. we showed you the picture when the big battle was under way from dawn until morning. trying to clear off this runway. a small army of men and equipment out there, shoveling the snow aside with snow blowers and sweepers and plows and hauling it away in big dump trucks. so that was a major operation. they finally got it cleared out. things could be back under way if there were more planes and people. >> what is up for all the stranded passengers, steve? >> reporter: well, yeah, everybody is trying to get used to this cancellation. 6800 cancellations today alone and our boards just showed cancelled, cancelled, cancelled all the way down the line. philadelphia was hard hit and had only one runway open today. jfk and newark had some closed today. more snow on the way for new

york tonight, second part of that one-two punch. things are slowly getting back to normal but a spokesperson here at the airport said it would take some time. >> storm of this magnitude, particularly with the runways, it will take time to dig out. especially in the northeast. and the aviation, so inter-connected. and the ripple effect they will feel for a couple of days while the airlines catch up. >> reporter: and so not good for passengers, grin and baear it, and check with your airlines. >> and this is the remnants of it. it is so big that there is still precipitation all the way from baltimore all the way up to bangor, new york went a couple of hours clean tonight but it is pouring outside with some sleet and freezing rain and in the next hour or so i believe it will get more of the frozen variety. still frozen stuff up in bangor,

you see that in boston with a mess of it. rick reichmuth has more, how is it looking? >> reporter: well, i tell you the thunder snow, you see that is indicative of the convection you see. it will spring up across the northeast and big problems certainly tomorrow across the airports because of the winds. this is the last 48 hours, shep, going all the way back into texas in the last 48 hours. this pink, all across atlanta and the southeast that is where we saw the worst of the icing. that is the most significant damage from the storm. the rest of the snow, obviously a problem but not as damaging with power outages and such as we've seen across parts of the south. this is where the storm is now. and we're seeing the very end of it towards d.c., philadelphia again getting the snow. but down to the south there are

still a lot of people without power. and tonight, shepard, their temperatures going below zero. so you're down in the south, not used to being without power and you're going to be very cold. towards savannah that is the bull's eye of the power outages, so a rough night ahead for them. and in parts of the northeast there is a lot of slush out there, especially with the i-95 corridor and the slush will freeze a little bit. but with temperatures barely getting below freezing we're not going to see a solid block of ice that we have been seeing. there is still a lot of snow that has been out there with prior storms. this is a look at the future radar towards the morning hours. we'll see it exiting towards new england. there is 10:00 a.m., still parts of upstate maine, but temperature-wise tomorrow, a lot of times you get the storms and bitterly cold weather behind it.

chasing its tail. he just can't keep up with all the snow. and it seems that the storm after storm after storm is causing some people to snap. they're calling it snow rage. the issue? where all of that snow should go. cops say they see not one but three cases of homeowners freaking out after plowed dumped snow where they had already shovelled. listen to this plow driver. >> he grabbed my arm, trying to pull me out of the truck. and i went to put it in park. and when i turned my head like this is had a gun up to my face like this. and i moved back like this. and i said go ahead. shoot me. >> thankfully, he did not. he said the attacker ran off and police later caught up with him. cops report two similar arrests in connecticut. in long island, police say a man threatened a plow driver with a shotgun. and the tv weather man al roker blasted the new york city

mayor for keeping the schools opened today. the snow dumped several inches, it was beautiful for a while until it was not. and rocker has a daughter in the public schools. he hammered bill de blasio in a number of tweets and the mayor responded today. >> it is a different thing to run the city than to give the weather on tv. so i am comfortable with our decision-making. and we just got off the phone with the national weather service. and again, i respect all the meteorologists out there, but the one i respect the most is the national weather service. >> truth be told, the streets were clear. mayor de blasio said the storm moved more powerful than the national weather service said it would. al roker tweeted that he through -- tweeted that he thought the national weather service was correct. meanwhile, officials with the

new york education department say just 45% of students even went to class today. they also say there will be a full day of school tomorrow. our jonathan hunt is on the west side near central park. jonathan, kind of wet out there? >> yeah, it is not so bad, shep, as we drive through the streets of upper west side manhattan. we are essentially in the calm before the storm. the rain was coming down really hard. as you can see we looked through the roof top camera here. the streets have been kept pretty clear. 1700 snow plows, 450 salt spreaders, we've seen some of them out tonight. and they have done a pretty good job of keeping the streets of new york city operating. it will drop below freezing in the next couple of hours. and we're told we're going to get another one to three inches of snow. so for new yorkers who went through such a difficult commute earlier today, it is going to be

a very difficult one again tomorrow morning, shep. >> i mentioned earlier a blue driver struck a pregnant woman today in brooklyn. >> yeah, this was a tragic accident over in brooklyn. a 36-year-old woman with her husband doing some shopping. stocking up for the storm. she was putting the groceries in the back of her car when this mini snow plow backed up into her. the driver said the blizzard was so strong at that point about 10 a.m. this morning he could not even see her. on top of that the 36-year-old woman was pregnant. her baby boy was then born by emergency surgery. that boy now in the neo-natal intensive care unit, in critical condition. >> hope they can pull that through. by the way, jonathan, it looks like you have been kidnapped tonight. that is awful. better luck next time. good to see you.

>> i have. >> good to see you, pal. the snow moved up the east coast again hitting boston again, delays and cancellations piling up in logan airport. lots of schools shut down today. the national weather service predicts another blast of snow overnight. the wind gusts as high as 50 miles an hour or more. when all is said and done, forecasters believe parts of massachusetts will get a foot and a half. our reporter for the station in boston, fox 25, is in andover right now north of bean town, how is it looking? >> reporter: yeah, and shep, we new englanders are used to snowstorms up here, but this is something else. it was treacherous on the roads. in fact, one of our producers here at fox 25. it took her three hours to get to work, what should have been a 45-minute commute. that is because of the snow and ice on the roads. i want to show you in the parking lot. a lot of this is not pile-up from the plows. a lot of this is accumulations.

we got another foot from another storm. and then all of this, on top of it we're getting huge snowflakes and snow was piling up so fast, the plows couldn't keep up with it. even though we have all the heavy equipment here like the south. we have all the equipment, but plows were not able to keep up with it. this is 93. this is the highway that conn t connects massachusetts to new hampshire. right now we're seeing a lot of blacktop. but tomorrow we're expected to have another morning commute that is treacherous, because they're expecting more snow tomorrow. we're bracing it. >> it is valentine's day tomorrow, stay home. heather, flying into andover tonight, thank you very much. and a man in florida is about to find out if he walks free or spends the rest of his life in prison. coming up, what jurors wanted to

to find out if the jury thinks he is a murderer. the man on the left here is michael dunn, in 2012 he opened fire at an suv full of teenagers outside of a convenience store. he killed the man on the right, jordan davis. this case has gotten a lot of comparisons to the trayvon martin case. dunn says he fired in self defense after he asked them to turn down his music. he claims they threatened him and that he saw a gun. although his girlfriend testified he never mentioned the gun to her. listen for the gunshots, three of them at first. then four more, then a break. and then another three. loo look. >> oh, my gosh, somebody is shooting out of their car.

>> yes, had owe was, and after the shooting he did not call 911. in fact he got in his car, they drove to their hotel, they ordered a pizza, they admit to all of this. went to bed, the next day they drove two and a half hours all the way back to brevard county, and then called police. they never called 911. cops say they never found any weapon in the car the teens were driving. steve harrigan has been covering it. >> reporter: they wanted to see a mannequin, and a live display. they wanted to see a letter from prison, that dunn wrote about the shooting, which may have

contradicted whether or not the 17-year-old was inside or outside of the vehicle when dunn shot him, shepard. >> and the surveillance video? >> really, two different sides on this. for the prosecution they're trying to ask the question do the sounds we hear on the tape actually match up with dunn's story. the fact that ten shots were fired, with pauses, the last three shots were fired at a vehicle driving away. are these the actions of a man who claims his life was under imminent threat. they say the police actually messed up by not sealing up the parking lot and searching it for four days. they say a possible shotgun used to threaten dunn could have been taken away or hidden. shepard? >> steve harrigan, in florida for us. and the nsa told congress that ed snowden gained access to at least some of the classified documents he leaked after he copied a co-worker's pass word. in a letter to lawmakers, the

legislative director says that that employee has since resigned after the government revoked his security clearance. ed snowden has said he did not steal any password. the son-in-law of a couple who died when a package exploded at their home now faces murder charges. happening monday east of nashville. the victims were in their 70s. the investigators didn't mention motives but the investigators were told the suspect may have owed his inlaws money. and comcast agreed to buy cable for a whoping $45 billion. if they approve the deal, the new giant will have about a third of all cable customers in america. remember groundhog day? punxsutawney phil predicted six more weeks. you may want to get rid of him. his home state of pennsylvania

guard troops to prepare for this latest round of weather. it is a tough blow to the state where utility crews were still trying to restore power after last week's storm. our rick leventhal has more. >> reporter: you can't blame the ground hog for this, shep, i heard you say that earlier. he was just doing his job. this is one of those nights when i wish it was colder. because it is still kind of raining on us here, we expect more, parts of the city got 16 inches today. this is a record for philadelphia. because they never had this kind of year with four-plus, this year they got eight-plus inches of snow. so record-breaking misery for much of philadelphia. the roads are pretty clear because of the temperature. it warmed up a bit. but the precipitation in one form or another since about 8:30 or 9:00 last night.

they stopped bus service for much of the day because the conditions were so bad. they closed schools and government offices. they closed the courts today and a lot of businesses never opened their doors because people didn't come to work and there were not people to go shopping here in philadelphia. and we have to give credit to the utility companies, about 6,000 of the 1.6 million customers in philadelphia lost power, some of them for several days up to a week, because this time around, a maximum amount, less than 5,000, the amount we got was 680 customers without power. that is not bad. again, things could get worse. shepard. >> i was reading that, why do they believe it will get worse? >> well you know it is still coming down. we talked about the second wave in the region, including philadelphia. they could get half a foot here. the mayor had a press conference late this afternoon and made it clear he doesn't want more traffic problems tomorrow.

he wants to keep the roads cleared. the schools, government offices will stay closed, as well. so valentine's day is a day off for the city of philadelphia which is still getting slammed. it is a wet wintry mix right now. but there should be more snow on the way. >> all right, rick leventhal, thank you very much. and the winter storms have already cost $16 billion, according to one analyst who tracks the effect on the economy. meanwhile, the forecasters predict more ice and snow. and fox 5 here in the tri-state. she is at the train station. how is it, liz? >> reporter: you know, shepard, it is starting to rain. the snow is no more. but they're expecting to salt the sidewalks. we expect all of it to freeze overnight. we got more than a foot of snow in the section of long island. and we know whenever it snows

the trains just crawl. it has been a nightmare getting out of the city all day with riders dealing with all sorts of delays. lots of flooding, penn station believing they will beat the storm, but trains had a lot of trouble getting out and we're still dealing with the residuals from it. liz, thank you. last word, almost three quarters of a million people are without power on the east coast. let's take a look at the ribbon up above on the fox news desk. officials say they have responded to thousands of emergency calls in atlanta. and atlanta looked like a ghost town for days, nearly all the new york city schools were closed. all the folks urged to stay home again. plows and trucks some of the only vehicles on the ground. and really, atlanta got off lighter, atlanta's governor has extended the state of emergency through sunday night to help the officials clear all the roads

and all that debris. john roberts works with us, what is the latest on the power outages. >> reporter: today, the weather improved dramatically. the sun was out for a matter of hours. most of the snow, at least in downtown atlanta is gone. now to restore the power for tens of thousands of people. 205,000 people in the state of georgia, 95,000 people in the carolinas, knocking the tree branches down, they took down the power lines. governor nathan deal has dispatched strike teams to the hardest hit areas, strike teams with chain saws. a lot of them in southern atlanta. out east of augusta, which really was the hardest hit part of the state. here in mid-town atlanta, not far from where we are. work crews are deciding what to do about the building that collapsed. this was an historic building in 2011, it served as the home of the chapter of the daughters of american revolution.

called craig house, under renovation, but all the snow and ice just brought it down, now they may have to tear the rest of it down. up in north carolina, drivers will wake up tomorrow morning, trying to figure out where to go to get their cars in the case of this one person, they're going to have to go out and get a new car. there was a hill in the raleigh area, a lot of cars trying to get up. they were spinning out to the side of the road. one car burst into flames, but for those lucky enough not to have their cars on fire, the transportation officials towed them to a safe spot. the governor, pat mccrory says even though the weather is getting better you need to be careful on the roads. he is urging people not to put on their stupid hats. >> continue to stay smart and stay in the areas, if you know the areas are bad or may

continue to get worse stay out of those areas. >> and there were a lot of questions about how it happened again, in atlanta two weeks ago and the fact it happened in 2005 in raleigh. memories tend to be short when it comes to snowstorms. >> i will say, especially since they cried wolf. let's talk to rick reichmuth. >> it is going away. we have about another 12 hours of this. north carolina you're done, philadelphia, you will see a little more, couple more hours and new york still the rain is kind of sloppy that is going on. temperatures don't get below freezing until 4 or 5:00 in the evening. that is certainly good news, we wouldn't see the quick freezing, morning commute should not be that bad if the roads have been treated. tomorrow morning we're pretty much done with this. tomorrow's high temperatures here in the 30s for almost everybody.

a little cooler back towards the lakes, going today on saturday we start to see the next system coming in. things are cooler out to the west, the coast areas, all the big cities, the interior sections of jersey and pennsylvania that saw a lot of the snow that will be gone. quickly to the southeast, tomorrow, looking at atlanta. 55 degrees. that will feel really good after the cold temperatures and saturday remaining pretty good. we have a big warmup coming, thursday of next week, 60s, 70s across parts of that area. >> 79 in miami looks wonderful. >> that is why florida is good. >> what is the sunny skieast co looking like for the weekend? >> well, i have to tell you, we had 3500 flights cancelled. people saying i can get out on the flight today. that did not happen, so you have flights cancelled today. tomorrow, people think they will get out but it will be windy, more delays because of the wind tomorrow and then we watch the next storm that comes for saturday. which is an interesting storm because it won't have as much

moisture with it, wouldn't be as big a snow-maker. but potentially for new england it will be a major storm by saturday night. it starts here across the plains, develops, you see the white there. more snow across the central appalachians. friday, saturday, snow again for parts of pennsylvania, upstate new york, take a look at how it gets wound, potentially a big, rough windy day for saturday. and temperatures in the 20s for sunday. sunday a cold day across the northeast. >> we're getting close to five feet. >> and good chance, we're only february 13th. we have more snow ahead of us. we certainly do. >> it has been a long day for meteorologists here and around the coast. but it was not all work and no play. our douglas mcelway showed that. >> reporter: we'll probably have another snow day for local school kids. i haven't sledded down the hill for years, here goes my first
