predicting for a lot of the big cities and places like boston northward, perhaps over a foot. we are talking about another major nor'easter. this time yesterday, we were watching the computer models and the storm really started to ramp up. that's why we have winter weather watches and warnings posted really from eastern pennsylvania all the way up to maine and then we've got a blizzard warning for cape cod and the islands. coastal massachusetts up towards maine where we could see gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour. a quick mover, but it is going to intensify within the next 24 to 36 hours. we are still seeing the snow flying in parts of new jersey and long island. by 7:00 p.m. could see three to five inches around new york city. i know. we have seen incredible amounts of snow. boston, could you really get pounded as the storm intensifies off the coast. then maine and coastal canada, the maritime provinces are going to see a lot of snow. look. this thing is going to really

intensify within the next 6 to 12 hours with wind gusts in excess of 50, 60 miles per hour. that's why we have blizzard warnings. i want to leave you with this. snow far this season, 58 inches in philadelphia. it won't take much to get you to top three snow seasons of the year for philadelphia. look at new york city. on average a little over 16 inches. we have 54 inches already this season. >> there is nothing light about that. it ain't a dusting either. now you set us all straight and we'll be ready for it. thank you, janice. >> you got it. >> greg? >> a big defeat for labor unions hoping to make inroads in the south. workers at the volkswagen plant in tennessee voting friday night to reject united auto workers efforts to organize. that lawsuit is particularly surprising because vw was seen as friendly to the union, even allowing reps into the chattanooga plant to make their case to employees.

brian llensa is wlifb more. >> this he voted against the united auto workers union. the chattanooga volkswagen plant opened in 2011 and volkswagen's only u.s. plant. it would have been the first successful effort to unionize workers in the south. bob king admitted the union has no long-term future if they cannot begin to organize in the south where there are 74 automaker assembly plants. friday's vote is major win for republicans like senator bob corker who argue unions will push auto companies away. corker has been the most vocal opponent and crucial bringing volkswagen to chattanooga. >> how many companies from south korea or japan or germany, how many of them do you think make a

stop in detroit to look at locating there? none. not a one. it's because of the culture the uaw has largely contributed to. >> corker releasing this statement after last night's vote. "needless to say, i am thrilled for the employees at volkswagen and for our community and its future." the debate did get messy anded . politicians threatening to cut off the plant to expand if the union was approved, sending fears that volkswagen would choose a mexican plant over the chattanooga for a new mid-size suv it's planning to build for the u.s. market. republicans say the uaw had unfair access to workers before the vote. here is a statement from the uaw. while we certainly would have liked a victory for workers here, we deeply respect the volkswagen global work works council, management and ig

metall creating a free and open atmosphere for workers to exercise their basic human right to form a union." ultimately, friday night's vote means uaw fails to expand outside of detroit at least for now. expect the union to target mercedes, hyundai and bmw plants next. >> the people who voted against unionizing citing detroit, we don't want to end up like detroit and they blamed unions for the bankruptcies there. a lot was riding on this. brian will continue to follow it. brian, thanks very much. this weekend president obama sitting down with the leader of jordan. the president and king abdullah ii meeting in if rancho mirage, california. this meeting marks the first in a series of high-profile talks between the u.s. and leaders of the region sunni governments which the u.s. has teamed up with to counter the growing influence of iran. chief washington correspondent james rosen joining us live in our d.c. newsroom with more on this.

>> good afternoon. president obama told his regional ally the u.s. is looking into new steps to change the calculus as they begin their fourth year of war. the two held private talks on the southern california desert estate and discuss how to strengthen moderate rebel forces in syria, which have lately faced attacks, not just from the assad regime but islamic jihadist battle units. >> we don't expect to solve this any time in the short term so there are going to be immediate steps we have to take to help the humanitarian situation there. there will be intermediate steps we can take to apply more pressure to the assad regime. >> evacuations from the devastated syrian city of homs

have enabled 1,200 people to leave that area with 200 fighting age males held by the regime. jordan absorbed 600,000 refugees since the fighting began. the equivalent of all the citizens of canada migrating with little more than the clothes on their back to the united states. king abdullah ii thanked president obama for extending u.s. aid and loan guarantees to his country. >> we do hope the rest of the internationiale community also steps up and catches up in the support, not only for the syrian refugees but the impact it has on jordanians and jordanian infrastructure. as well as looking at mechanisms of how we can push u.s. supplies into syria. >> with no public events on schedule today, the president is enjoying a round of golf. >> thanks, james. good to see you as always. president obama under fire for appointing political donors as u.s. ambassador. now this is a practice that has

been going on for a very long time. a topic of debate for more than a century. recent gaffes by nominees have many people wondering if the president's picks are qualified for these high-profile jobs. this has been going on for a century. the president when campaigning back in 2008 said, no, it's going to be a different politics when i'm president. maybe not so. >> maybe not so. it has been a long tradition, as you said, president reward their big donors and influential backers with ambassadorships. many recent administrations have stuck eto a formula where 70% o ambassadorships are awarded with people with international backgrounds and those who have shown loyalty or financial support to the president. the obama administration is coming under strong criticism for an apparent lack of qualification for some of its picks for key ambassador

position. george tsunis, the ambassador for norway has beverly been to that country. he testified that norway is a constitutional democracy. in fact, it is a constitutional monarchy. he said it is part of a fringe group but is center right ruling coalition. nominee for ambassador to hungary is a soap opera producer who raised $800,000 for mr. obama. she appeared to no very little about that country in recent testimony. even former senator max baucus made a stunning admission before china where he will be the next ambassador. he says, i don't know a lot about china. then there are other cases, as well. state department spokesman defended the president's picks. >> our approach has continued to be approximately a 70/30 balance

of career employees of people working through the foreign service and serving around the world and 30% from outside the private sector. >> senator john mccain ended questioning for nominees of ambassadors with a highly sarcastic remark saying i have no more questions for this highly qualified group of nominees. everyone knew way meant by that. >> little facitiousness. >> those in the business of selling marijuana have a difficult time doing banking. there are new developments to report in the financial fallout for the legalization of marijuana in colorado. the justice and treasury departments are giving banks a road map for doing business with

pot farms. many in the banking industry say they are uneasy about opening accounts for marijuana businesses. >> yes. banks and financial institutions feel they are in legal limbo despite these guidelines coming out on friday afternoon. the guidelines coming from the treasury department say banks and financial institutions can accept cash from these pot businesses, but what the banks have to do, making regular reports to the treasury department to watch out for suspicious activity. the fed saying the banks have to keep an eye out for operators selling pot to minors, but there are additional red flags that the banks trigger additional reports for. evidence a customer is using marijuana business to launder money. criminal records of people involved in the business and businesses unrelated to pot depositing cash that smells like

marijuana, which would be a bit of a give away, wouldn't it? s the guidelines are finally welcomed by the marijuana industry because they've been very concerned about safety because it's mostly a cash-only business. >> the mash industry is required to pay taxes. we pay a significant amount of taxes into the government, the state government, the federal government. i think that if we are obligated to do that, we should at least have the luxury of a bank account. >> the drug is illegal under federal law. there are states that allow it for medical purposes. colorado and washington allow it for recreational use. the banking industry is left with ethical and compliance complications here. industries not welcoming saying the guidance and regulations they have doesn't alter the underlying challenges of the banks.

in a statement to the american bankers association frank keating explained it like this, "possession or distribution of marijuana violates federal law, and banks that provide support for those activities face the risk of prosecution and assorted sanctions." one federal official says there is no safe haven for banks under these guidelines, but they are saying if they do follow these guidelines, then they are unlikely to face prosecution. the banks are saying, what does that mean? we need to comply and what they want is hard legislation not these loose guidelines. >> understood. thank you, dominick. the taliban is taunting the united states in afghanistan. we'll tell you all about that. >> plus, coming up -- relations with that country appear to be in trouble. what should america do now? and it was awful and then went from bad to worse. on the pennsylvania turnpike, a pile-up of up to 100 vehicles. >> vice president joe biden making headlines yet again for

welcome back, everybody. time for a quick check of the headlines. a skier had to undergo surgery after breaking her spine during a training run. u.s. and china promising a team effort in the fight against climate change. secretary of state john kerry meeting with his chinese counterpart in beijing. the two say both countries agreed on steps to reduce vehicle emissions of energy efficiency and other green initiatives. >> the investigation continues this hour into two massive pile-ups on the pennsylvania turnpike. it all happened during rush hour friday. smaller fender benders added to a five-mile backup that lasted hours and left dozens injured. weather-related speed restrictions were lifted earlier

in the day, but drivers say the road was still dangerously slick. the head of the republican national committee firing back against controversial claims against vice president joe biden. vp eliciting a swift reaction after he said this during a meeting with fellow democrats. >> there isn't a republican party. i wish there were. i wish there was a republican party. i wish there was one person you could sit across the table from, make a deal, make a compromise and know when you got up from that table it was done. >> a whole bunch of senators do a response. that's how you get on the local news back home. you do a response, package it up, send it out to every affiliate and give your response. that is a good thing in our party. good to see you both.

angela, does biden make a fair point or is he just blowing smoke? >> that's what biden does is blow smoke. no. it shows how desperate this party has become. when they can't stand on their own policy, when they can't stand on their own, they blame republicans. now to say that the republican party doesn't exist? we tried to compromise. the fact is that in 2014 in november, more than likely, republicans will take over the house and senate. i think the vice president is desperate. >> richard, there is no shortage of hypocrisy in washington. same could be said for democrats. they are running ads against obama care. democrats were refusing to even consider president obama's important fair trade initiative. isn't it true that democrats are arguably more split than republicans?

clearly they are dealing with a slump. i will agree with angela we have seen compromise come out of this republican caucus which is finally seeing compromise. i think this is the eye of the storm here for the republican party. we have some calm, but the truth of the matter is when you get deeper into it, there is some issues the republican party has. case in point. mitch mcconnell's primary. lindsey graham's primary. another case in point, the georgia senate seat primary. >> talk about alaska, talk about north carolina, arkansas, louisiana. shall i go on? >> there is no primary there. >> the last midterm, the republican party in some key states fielded some tea party candidates that almost immediately when they opened their mouths turned off voters. >> when you had one candidate, i believe from missouri that said there is legitimate rape, okay,

we do have challenges. >> delaware, nevada. my goodness. >> but we have obama care. in 2010 republicans won the house by obama care. when you have democrats running away from the president's signature legislation, when you have democrats running away from the president when he goes to their districts, bill clinton used to raise money but democrats today are running away from obama. >> i want to play more of what they're depressed. they are $20 million behind the republican party. the governors are $20 million behind the governor republican association. it's just not a good midterm party. he is doing what i think he has to do, which is try to rile up their base.

>> richard, is biden just trying to lift the spirits of a demoralized democratic party that could face a real shellacking in november because obama care has proven for some candidates to be the electoral ball and chain? >> i am a democrat. i think reince priebus is doing his job. the party is excited. wife seen overwhelming approval a lot of the issues democrats are fighting for, like raise minimum wage $10.10. beyond that, i think the key point to point out here is you look at the state of the union address and the four republican official responses that all said something different. the problem the republican party has is not a problem of unity. their message is not together. usually republicans are lock step when it comes to messages. >> last question for angela. the president made 29 changes to obamacare. most unilateral. it's profoundly unpopular.

fox news poll finds a majority wishes they never passed it. look at this number. 64% do not think the law would have passed if we knew in 2009 what we know today. trouble for democrats in november? >> it's trouble for democrats in november, but the rnc chair needs to stay on message. i agree rich from the standpoint we need to have a solid message. instead of going out there responding to the vice president, we need to stay on this is what we will do to create more prosperous america and a better america. >> come up with ideas, angela. >> they've come up with ideas. >> haven't heard them. >> i think richard is making a point. we haven't heard them enough. we'll wait and see if that happens. >> exactly. >> richard, good to see you. there is a bitter rivalry going on and it is heating up. on the ice at the winter

olympics. russian president vladimir putin cheered on the men's hockey team as they took on the u.s. who came out on top? we'll let you know. a verdict could come any moment in the michael dunne murder trial. the jury is deliberating behind closed doors. what did they ask for? what did they want to see? how close are they to a verdict? what will it be? will they find dunne guilty or 0 innocent? >> i'm not sure anybody has been involved with a jury out as long as these folks have, but they're as hard a group of working people as i've ever seen. ey do k you'll need when you retire? then we gave each person a ribbon to show how many years that amount might last. i was trying to, like, pull it a little further. [ woman ] got me to 70 years old. i'm going have to rethink this thing. it's hard to imagin how much we'll need for a retirement that could last 3years or mor so maybe we need to approach things dferently, if we want to be ready for a longer retirement.

game after an eight-round shootout. russian president vladimir putin was in the stand for his team's loss. a wardrobe change wasn't enough to change america's luck in speed skating. the u.s. failed to medal in the men's 1500 after switching into old school skin suits instead of the new high-tech mach 39 suits. team usa has won four gold and is in sixth place overall with 13 medals total. that's not so shabby. >>. >> we are awaiting the verdict in the so-called loud music murder trial. jury deliberations stretching into a fourth day now. michael dunne accused of shooting and killing a florida teenager. he says he was acting in self-defense, but prosecutors say that 17-year-old jordan davis fervor stood a chance against dunn. steve harrigan is covering it live from miami. >> day four of deliberations, the jury had more questions for the judge this morning asking if

all the charges against dunn should be considered separately. dunn is facing a first degree murder charge for murdering a 17-year-old african-american. he also faces lesser charges of attempted murder for firing into a vehicle where there were three other young men present. those attempted murder charges carry a penalty up to 20 years each. throughout this case, the defense maintained that dunn was simply acting in self-defense. he claims to have seen a rifle pointed at him. no weapon was found at any time after the shooting took place. the prosecution says dunn acted with deliberation and he fired ten shots in all, including three shots that they say happened when the suv containing all four passengers was already pulling away. that courtroom is cleared now. we are waiting for the jury's verdict and see if they can reach a verdict in day four of deliberation. back to you. steve harrigan, we may be coming back to you any moment if there is a verdict. let ewe bring in our legal

panel on this. robert shock is defense attorney and former prosecution. alex little, defense attorney former prosecutor. alex, let me start with you. this is really a self-defense case. florida has stand your ground. no matter how you look at it, the facts have to prove that the defendant had an imminent and reasonable belief that his life was in danger. have they met the standard in florida in this case from what you heard? >> i don't think so. i don't think watching the trial they would have gotten the instruction for self-defense until michael dunn himself took the stand and suggested he had seen what he believed was a shotgun. i don't think the evidence was very credible. the rest of the credible, the weight of the evidence weighs gebs that. self-defense cases are incredibly difficult. instructions are complex. jurors tend to think of themselves more in the place of the defendant in a self-defense

case than at any other time. you wonder what would you do in a similar situation. you've got to convince all 12 beyond a reasonable doubt that he didn't act in self-defense that. can be difficult to do. >> at the same time, robert, a 17-year-old is dead. he does make the claim, the defendant, he saw a shotgun, but no one can corroborate it. >> that is a huge problem for the defense. he is saying he saw a gun and there is not one witness, his girlfriend or anyone. even when his girlfriend testified she said he never mentioned it to her minutes afterwards. that is a huge hurdle the defense hasn't been able to get over. their other argument is the durango left the scene. i don't think the jury will focus on it. it's whether they believe michael dunn. if they believe him, he could get acquitted or a lesser included charge, but again the physical evidence is on the side of the prosecution.

>> let's talk about that. it interesting in this particular jury instruction. the judge included a lot of lesser offenses. it's not that he said you must find first degree murder. he included a lot of other reasons that they could find him guilty. it's interesting that the jury came back with the question that they came back with once they started deliberating, saying can we find guilty on one charge and not another or not guilty on one charge and guilty on another? what does that tell you? >> i think what they are probably focusing on, i will say it's a caveat. you never know what the jury is thinking. >> right. >> we could be completely off base. if i'm in the courtroom and hear that question about self-defense and whether we should consider it separately, there is no evidence whatsoever that michael dunn had seen anything to suggest the other people in that car, the other three individuals had a gun, had a weapon, pose

n any threat. then focus solely on the murder charge against jordan davis as a place where they may have concerns whether it's first degree, second degree, manslaughter or some version of self-defense. that is probably what's going on. >> for some of our viewers who maybe aren't following the case as closely as the four lawyers we have here are, it is interesting he made a comment to his girlfriend about the loud music and he was disturbed by it. it is interesting to me also, and i never considered this in a self-defense case so i studied extensively stand your ground. i'm a florida lawyer, as well. that he had a gun, possessed a gun in the glove box. how does that impact his reasonable belief of being in fear for his life when he knows he's got a loaded gun in the car? >> exactly. he's carrying a loaded weapon. he had it for 20 years. not only that, you have a situation where michael dunn has

a car and can get in his car and drive away. this is the parallel everyone wants to make the comparison to the george zimmerman case. george zimmerman had physical injuries everyone can see he suffered. in this case, michael dunn has no injuries, no witnesses and he had a car and opportunity to leave that situation. it appears he was obviously the one who escalated this situation with his decision to go back to his car, get the gun and discharge those bullets. >> that is a decision the jury has to make. it's a tough one, but it is relevant that he left the scene. the shooting happened and the defendant leaves and drives off then wants to turn himself into a completely different police district closer where he thought co-tell his side of the story. >> absolutely. he doesn't call 911. >> what about that? that he took the stand. something that zimmerman didn't do. >> i think he had to take the

stand. there was no evidence. his girlfriend's testimony gave no basis whatsoever for self-defense instruction. if anybody was going to say he felt under threat, the only person who could do that was michael dunn. without that p opportunity to take the stand, he had no chance. he set himself up for strong cross-examination. a lot of the stuff he said didn't hold up. he talked about the music and said very different things than the fiancee in the car with him. the jury is trying to grapple with, did you believe him, not believe him? that is very difficult for a jury to do, to disbelieve someone beyond reasonable doubt. because we are talking about self-defense is what the state has to prove. >> and they are both, seems like both sides on this case are fighting vigorously for their side of the case. you guys did a great job. really appreciate it. this verdict could come in at any moment. we will certainly bring it to you when it does. thank you so much. >> your point about fleeing the scene, often there is a jury

instruction that flight is evidence of consciousness of guilt. sometimes you don't even need the jury instruction because jurors intuitively know that. >> i never thought about it in a self-defense case. i wasn't a criminal attorney. but having a gun in the glove box should give you some sense of less of a need for self-defense, but i don't know. >> it might undermine the argument of voluntary manslaughter which in florida is heat of passion, sudden impulse. a lot less punishment than murder. >> we have to see what happens. it could be today. it's advertised as the cure for aging men's waning energy. is testosterone replacement therapy safe? the clock is ticking in afghanistan. taliban taunting america. will the afghan leader sign an agreement to keep american troops in his country and should we say? >> i hope the united states will

possibly maintain the security and sovereignty of afghanistan which has prompted people to ask, what's the point? your thoughts? >> i think we must maintain a small base in afghanistan after the sacrifices of the american military and the american people and countless lives and billions of dollars to help not only iraq but afghanistan experience freedom. the fact we weren't able to get a security agreement in iraq, it ended with nothing. now what we have left in the region is a hopeful small base in afghanistan. this is our last hope to actually have a small base in the region that would certainly push back and keep somewhat control on terrorists like the taliban and others who are
