2016 all information is valid. if you look in there, there are big discrepancies not just about whineers but bosnia so she didn't think we should go into bosnia because they have been fighting for 900 years but publicly she stated that, yes, she did advocate early intervention. there are inconsistencies and there is a lens into who this woman is. >> everything is fair game when you are contemplating a run for president. it seems to me at the same time -- this was a legitimate story, no question. some were grudging in the credit and would not mention the washington freebie -- free beacon but what someone says in their own time, a decade later is it fair, politicians do not always say what they think. let's ask if she runs for budget. these are worthy questions to ask potential presidential candidate. i would agree, though, that the

resolution covered this with a sense, almost, of immediatous obligation. here we go again, having to cover hillary clinton and the clinton soap opera rather than asking pointed questions such, for example, when hillary clinton is reported to have supported single-payer although publicly she said she never had. there is more to the papers than sex scandals but will the press ask the questions? i have my doubts. >> tedious obligation...do you think that is because of an effort to protect hillary clinton? >> yes. >> or is it because the country went through this spectacular scandal, saturation coverage for two years and feeling that we already know most of this but some of her private musings. >> it is clinton far technique and the obligation to protect hillary clinton. >> what about bill clinton? he figures promise thanly and there was a liter back to 1996

democratic nominee. at the same time, in comes out and because she is not a candidate, she is not in contact with journalists and does not have to respond so there is this situation where we debate it for her. >> if she responds we will attack her. if she -- what are we going to do? the poll numbers for her will go down as soon as she announced and starts running. >> i will quarrel with your use of the word "tedious," because if it is tedious there is a lot of it. the media in a search for ratings are more happy to talk about this than the debt ceiling fight in washington, dc, where speaker boehner rolled over and democrats avoided another government shut down or they danced around the government shut down. this is a lot more fun. >> but it did not attract the attention that chris christie and bridge-gate has been getting. when i say "tedious," you look

how it was framed to dismiss it and marginalize it because it gave them a conservative website by many of the networks. second, it gave the press the ability to frame it as coming from a conservative website and now put our own spin on it so rather than introducing the information contained in the letters and diary, how will it affect hillary clinton run in 2013? >> i think it was the opposite. the express embarrassed because what they want to talk about is sex. in part, it is so much more fun than talking about the debt ceiling and it get are more hits and clicks. i am saying the press is embarrassed they are doing this, they are, again, going into this well. >> then they can go, look, we have to do this, we are being forced to draw attention to it. >> before we go to break we will talk about something not about

sex but should get and hasn't gotten so far the coverage, a report this morning from saturday, 200 illegal workers, miners, in south africa, they are trapped, and there are efforts underway to rescue them. i contrast that with reports in british and australian reports with oscar pistorius, the athlete from south africa, a one year and was of the killing of his girlfriend and he is facing trial for that, that is getting more than the miners would get. >> he is a mini celebrity and we cover that more than tragic accidents. >> with that crime, a crime passion, something going on emotionally which grabs people. but i would like to know more about the terrible tragedy in south africa. >> hopefully we will have that information soon. >> remember to en10 us a tweet about our show during the show

chris christie made a fundraising speech in chicago this week as new figures show a healthy haul that he made. he continues to draw fierce scrutiny from outlets as the "washington post" and "the new york times" and on msnbc one contributor, former bush aide nicole wallace, pushed back at the saturation coverage when chuck todd questioned whether christie had a good day in

from it saying he hasn't been covering it in this exorbitant way. >> chris christie can't buy a good headline. >> especially from msnbc. >> i think it's a legitimate story, multiple investigations, subpoenas. when i flip around the champnne, i see a lot of msnbc doing this. >> we talked about the hillary obsession. let's talk about the christie obsession. >> twofold here. he was the 8 hundred-pound gorilla. that is not a pun. in the republican race. he was the presumed front-runner. the presumed having the best chance. but he also had a reputation as being above politics. this is why the political media liked him, it is why moderates and independents like him. he was seen as not doing politics as usual. so this kind of scandal feeds into the idea that he's just another politician and corrupt one at that. >> what about the daily drumbeat or the hourly drumbeat? >> they want to keep it going.

their audience craves this sort of thing. >> even there was a headline comparing chris christie and hillary clinton and saying, well hillary might be a bully but it's a different kind of bully. a private bully, not the kind that chris christie is. he's a jlegitimate bully. >> that's interesting. there was a long piece about christie and his scandal and history. it was this photoshop photo illustration as it was identified where the governor's head, i'm not looking at that. there -- out of order. let me back up. leave that picture up for a minute. we'll get it together, folks. chris christie's head and tony soprano's body. if we can go to the mugshot of al capone, rachel maddow had likened him to al capone. >> come on. she said fiscal conservative that led famous individuals in our history to pay very low taxes for years until they didn't anymore. and then up came al capone.

joining us to talk about this is elise bee back, reporter who covers health care for the hill. >> did the media overplay or underplay this delay? >> there was a range of coverage options for the media. they underplayed it. >> because? >> itwe're talking about what i means for the white house, for politics, what it means for congress, what it means for the rollout of the health care law overall. >> one of the needs for politics seems to get a lot of attention. the more complicated questions are hard to answer, correct me if i'm wrong, seem to get less? >> yes. they seem to get less and then do get less because as a journalist working on a print deadline, it's very difficult to put all of that together into a story within a couple of hours or 45 minutes is what we had before the announcement this week. it's very difficult. for a reporter working on deadlines, you're just not going to get very far with the larger questions if you're trying. the media ultimately underplayed it.

there's larger relevance for the rollout of the health care law but very few people asked what it means for the businesses and the employees of those businesses which is really the real story here. >> when you're work og on this story and another delay in the mandate for a large group of companies, do you get pushback from the administration officials? >> immediately after we posted our story, we got an e-mail from the treasury department to me and to another reporter working on the story and they were quibbling with our headline which is common in washington, d.c. if you're writing about the news of the day, you're going to get pushback from one court or another. it was fascinating because it was the media. we shouldn't be calling it a delay, first of all. they wanted us to call it phased implementation. which is such a wonderful bureaucratic term, isn't it? when you think about it, there's no way to fit that in a headline. >> it is a delay for those companies. >> it's a delay. they also wanted us to make sure we referred to it as partial in the headline which i think is fair. this isn't a delay of the employer mandate in the same way we saw it delayed last year.

this is a partial delay for some businesses. doesn't mean it's not big news. >> they're arguing about the headline, not the story. >> that's right. >> conservative commentator is saying that president obama is being lawless here, going too far, repeatedly changing this law. is that a legitimate debate. >> it is. certainly, it assists republicans in campaign season because it allows thome put together all of these issues. they can talk about how they don't want to do immigration reform because the president is lawless. they can sneak around argument and put it out for the voter. all the delays and changes to obamacare's rollout aren't getting into the public's mind the same as in washington, d.c. >> don't follow the story every day. >> many people don't know that obamacare is still the law. many people are confused about the basic facts of this. republicans are in a strong position to make that argument because it allows the public to put together all of these bits and pieces of what they've been hearing. >> one other piece of this is a couple days after the delay or

the phased i am plemtation, excuse me. >> yes. >> the administration to more than 3 million people will have now in total enrolled in obamacare. that led to upbeat stories, maybe a little too positive snoo. >> perhaps too positive. >> how so? >> the administration deserves credit. here's why. the fault was a complete and total disaster. it was like covering a car wreck. that's how it was. the rollout in october, november, december. when you think about these rollout numbers, it was the first time the administration had beat a monthly target it had set for itself. of all of the media outlets that had said in the fall, oh, they're not meeting their monthly targets, isn't this terrible, the administration can't meet expectations, i think it's a fair and sportsman like thing to say things are getting better. at the same time, the press is eager to tell a different story about the rollout. people have health fatigue, congress does, and we're ready to hear a different story. >> the press was pointed out that 20% of those people counted in the 3 million, they haven't paid premiums yet.

killers admitting to a pennsylvania newspaper that she and her husband not only killed a man they lured online last year but 22 others across the united states, the f.b.i. now is looking into those claims. now back to "media buzz" with the headlines. this is fox news. it is no secret sochi has had a share of problems but the coverage of the winter olympics is suffering from something deeper and it is beyond the usual time zone problem when we get the results long before the results air. i spoke with a spoke commentators from abc news, from sochi. christine, i am sure you are caught up in the excitement but over than the united states hockey team beating russia on saturday, i cannot remember an olympics that generated so little chatter. why? >> that is a great question.

bottom line, there have been a lot of disappointing performances for the united states athletes and some expected performances snow boarding, a sport we own, the x game sports where the four gold medals have been, but vonn never made it, and bodie miller did not do well. any household name or close to a household name isn't making the headlines. >> so no break out stars and sometimes television can create new stars but it doesn't seem to have happened and you have the monster time delay and people have complained about nbc airing these so much rather than they take place and in these days i can already see the results on your twitter feed. >> that is the problem for any network like nbc televising this. package it and have it be most and up close and personal stories prime time but the world of twitter and social media is

absolutely against that. for us, for me, it is great. i have never had the ability but the last two olympics to tell the story and breaking news because, of course we didn't have twitter or facebook. so i love social media and being able to get the work out and tell people the story. i have noticed a lost us, and i have been doing this, sending still pictures because people get a kick out of what it looks like while it is happening live. >> between that and nbc which has paid billions for the rights of a number of let pick games being restrictive has this become less of a shared event? >> i think so. without a doubt. of the recontributions, as you mentioned, it is much more of a hit or miss thing if that makes sense. when we remember as kid sitting down and you could not wait for 8:00 and the music to start and you were off and running. that is not happening anymore.

there is that element of it not being a shared event. the sports are no longer as unique as they used to be. we see hockey all the time the so men of the sports stations now have all the sports on the air almost is nothing special about watching tennis in the summer olympic you see them at wimbledon and the s.u.v. -- u.s. open. the novelty and excitement is less for the viewer. >> do you think, too, it is evershadow overshadowed by the problems in sochi and people do not like putin, the russian hosts, the warm weather and low attendance and, maybe, to me, the event that breakthrough was the bobsledder who had to breakdown the bathroom dune for get to his event. >> going support him byes of now 15 in a rei have covered i have never seen one we had more of a run up about the news and not

sports and serious news, security, terrorism, putin's antibay propaganda law. that took up all of the airspace and all of headlines for months leading up to sochi. i have never seen games where we have focused less on the sports going into the games. i would saast welcome we have made that turn to sports. you make the point and it is well-taken, then, where are the superstars. we don't have huge names to talk about. absolutely there is now doubt the run to sochi will affect how they are looked at for the future. the way history will look at the games and it did take away from the sports' impact because there was so much news. >> nbc ratings have been the same as the last winter olympics but i measure in terms of how much people talk about it in the states. during the women's downhill skiing, the commentator said that they do this all the while in a suit and maybe a little bit of makeup, that is grace under

pressure. he caught flak for that. is there a double standard for female athletes, vonn posed in a bikini and they have to look good and be competitive on the slopes or on the rink. >> we have talked about this before. there is still that element. it less lessens every four or two years. women's hockey, no one is talking about their makeup. they will probably be playing canada for the gold men a terrific game and packed and people cared very much about that. absolute limit as long as we are in a male dominated sports world and men are make the executive decisions in most cases for the companies and the networks and sports companies we will have this kind of conversation. maybe i am a pollyanna but i think it lessens. the fact that compensate was noted and brought up and i heard about it immediately on twitter, that is good.
