city. when this happened yesterday, we were stunned to see it. in fact, the world was. this country is known as so peaceful, certainly divided politically and economically, socially and in so many ways, even down to the language. yet violent is so rare here until now. president obama blasted the ukrainian government today for a deadly crackdown on protesters in the second day. the ukrainian government shows no signs of letting up, in fact, quite the opposite of t today, announcing a new anti-terrorist operation. quite a word it describe people fighting for their life. at least 25 people died in yesterday's explosive protests, including police protesters and a journalist. hundreds were hurt. it happened as riot cops stormed the protesters' camp which came only hours after russia pledged to restore its multibillion bailout package for the ukrainian government.

you can see how this comes together. that highlights exactly what this fight is really all about. whether ukraine will line up with the former soviet union or instead, align itself with europe and other western nations, including the united states. i want to show you on the map just how this tug-of-war works out. here is the ukraine, russia over here, of course. there is a bit of a dividing line, it is pretty harsh, right along here, with those on this side to the west aligning with the west. and for those on this side and to the east aligning with russia. in fact, the vast majority of the people in this half of ukraine speak russian as a first language, but not over here and the government is left in the middle. a democratically elected government, which the people say, many of them, has overstepped its bounds. the protest started months ago when ukraine's president decided to cozy up with the kremlin that outraged people who want ukraine to be more like europe, to align with europe. they seize government buildings, they occupy this independent square where always all this is happening, in the heart of kiev

and created this ring of fire in an attempt to keep the cops away. we have dramatic pictures of of all this coming in as it has been coming from ground. a lot are astounding it shows the individual choices that people are make and what a big deal this is to them. this is a picture that comes to us, whoa, as it gets out of control, this one astounded all of us. this is a man whose body is burning, his cloths are on fire, the back of his head is on fire. his hands over his face. the protesters were trying to overtake police barricades outside the parliament building when this went down. this next one, this is a line of police with their barricades, all making a line along the way. you can see all the debris down on the ground after days, 24 hours of protests and fires burning there. this is an overturned police vehicle, mass people have overturned this police car, according to those on the ground. witnesses reported seeing several police officers burned alive in an armored car. you can see everybody here's wearing these blue masks.

one guy over here, this guy actually, the scarf over his face, because the acrid smoke in the air, tires and everything else burning there for so long. and here you see protests stretching far outside the ukraine. this is chicago, where demonstrators are gathering outside the ukrainian consulate. it's been an extremely difficult time. another live look now at kiev. the white house is considering several option, including slapping ukraine with tough economic punishment. let's get to our amy kellogg who is live for us this afternoon from moscow. amy? >> reporter: sheppard, as you mentioned, this is a tug-of-war between east and west, but frankly, a lot of people are asking, since ukraine is wedged between east and west and 25 years nearly after the end of the cold war why should the ukrainians even have to make this decision? but they are dealing with this right now. the latest news tonight is that the president has fired the chief of the armed forces, no explanation for that was given, but it is known that that chief

of staff had expressed some resist tense to the idea when it was floated about setting a state of emergency in ukraine. now, if the military does get involved in this so-called anti-terrorist operation, this will really be upping the ante, raising the stakes, because the military, until now, has not been involved in all of this. it has been riot police. russia, giving funds to ukraine, but now, holding back because apparently, they don't want to give money to a country that clearly does not have control of its population. the russians and the ukrainian government are referring to what's going on as an attempted coup and the ukrainian security services, sheppard, tonight, are saying that they believe that at least 1500 guns have been stolen from military depose across the country. shep? >> amy kellogg live just after 10 until moscow. monitoring some of the wild scenes showing kiev as a bit of a war zone. protesters', tents, police cars,

the people protesting now tend to be more from central or western. although the protests have [ inaudible ] even in eastern portions of the country where they are expressing displeasure, just the way the country has been governed, just the level of corrupti corruption. >> serious danger of a regional split. alan, we are looking at the pictures you have taken in the region there over the last day or so. and i'm wondering as i walk over to the wall to show these fires, the fire there is at independence square frankly make it look like armageddon. the closeness of the lens can sometimes distort the reality. i wonder what the situation is beyond this area. >> it's relatively -- other parts of kiev are much more peaceful. things have changed a bit here

can co-plot attacks again the united states and others. amateur video reportedly shows regime mortgagers striking rebel positions in syria this week. we can't confirm the authenticity of this footage. just yesterday, secretary of state john kerry emphasized the crisis has no military solution, nothing worth putting u.s. boots on the ground. he also accused the syrian dictator, bashar al assad, of stonewalling peace talks. secretary kerry called for russia, one of president assad's biggest allies to push the syrian leader to negotiate with the rebels. a watchdog group estimates, get this, 136,000 people have died in the three-year-long civil war. and american officials warn president assad is now gaining the upper hand. move over, show you where syria is, the heart of it all, the reason there is such a problem where it is located in the middle east, neighbors iraq, lebanon and our al like of course, israel. ed henry is live at the white

house with what is another in a series of difficult situations in the white house. ed? >> reporter: as youly that out on that map, why you've got strategic national security interests for the united states and why nearly two years ago, the president said at a news conference here at the white house that there's this red line for him, that if assad were to use chemical weapons, woe cross a red line and more importantly, the u.s. would make sure there were, in the president's wores, enormous consequences for assad. the president walked up to the line last year of u.s. military action, pulled back in part because assad said he would turn over his chemical weapons. those weapons now are not being turned over around instead, assad is moving forward around still killing his own people with conventional weapons, a point i pressed with jay carney. >> turns out assad is not turning over weapons. >> ed, you are con playing in the the two things. >> then you said he was turning them over, but he is not. >> the president -- first of all no question that the assad regime has blown some deadlines. >> now, jay carney went on to

he wasn't able to get to that. and he did it it all because he said she insulted him. this is said to have happened on friday, valentine's day, on a clothing-optional holland america cruise right off the coast of honduras at the time. according to the fed's report, the attacker, an indonesian man, this man, was the victim state room attendant. the man claims he got angry after he tried deliver breakfast to the woman earlier in the day. he says he knocked on the door three times, then he says he heard the woman say, and i quote, "wait a minute, you son of a bitch." that, he says, is when he took himself forward and considered an insult to himself and his family. later, the man says he used his master key to break into the victim's state room, hid on her balcony outside the room, then fell asleep on a chair before the woman finally got back. according to court documents which refer to the passenger by her initials only, as clw was falling asleep, an unidentified

male began choking and punching her repeatedly. the suspect also strangled her with several items, including a telephone cord around the cord to her curling eye on. the feds may seat man beat her with a laptop and the victim claims she hit her attacker in the groin and tried to stab him with a corkscrew. and that while they were on the balcony, he attempted to push her overboard. a horrifying story, no document the man did escape, without any pants, mind you can and reportedly jumped from balcony to balcony until he was able to break into another state room. eventually, the man turned himself in and cop fessed. now, police say the victim was so severely injured that work hearse to airlift her to a hospital in south florida and that's where phil keaton is with the rest of this story from there let's start with the suspect. why is he now, phil? >> reporter: hey, shep, he is still up in fort lauderdale at the broward county jail on hold for the u.s. marshal's service. this attack happened in international waters of off the coast of honduras, so the fbi arrested e ed the 28-year-old m

charged with attempt to commit murder and aggravated sexual assault. he first sought his revenge on top, the lido deck, but far too crowded on valentine's night. after the attack in her room, she then escaped into the hallway where an unidentified passenger rendered first aid. per the complaint, he witnessed clw exit her cabin wearing only a tank top covered in blood, had a curling iron wrapped and tangled around her neck and the victim, fearing death was imminent, asked the passenger to relay to her family how much she loved them. later on board the ship, she did get some medical treatment and did concept to a sex assault exam, shep. >> you know, we have could have odor is many stories where these cruise lines are criticized for underreporting crimes on board. how did holland america handle this? >> reporter: by all, can the right by the book. you know, the u.s. has an act, called the u.s. vessel security and safety act. and that requires all crimes on

the high seas like this to be reported to the fbi. this was, the coast guard reports, from january 2012 through last september, there were ten cases of sex assaults involving a crew member and a passenger. in this case, who will land america detained the suspect and kept him detained until returning to florida and immediately handed him over to federal agents. holland america also flew the victim's family to florida to be at her side. "while no words can adequately express our shock in this event, this has shaken the entire holland american family to our very core. our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and her family during this difficult time. and the fact that this woman fought back so vigorously on valentine's day night almost certain slit reason, shep, she is alive today. >> wow. that is incredible. thanks very much, phil keating in south florida. i want to get to our producer who had a look where this happened. we were curious about the state rooms and how this sort of thing might have gone down. i guess we looked it up. what do these rooms look like?

a man who prosecutors say wanted to wage holy war in new york has pleaded guilty to a terrorism charge. the suspect built pipe bombs and talked about blowing up a police station or even the george washington brim. he has agreed to serve 16 years in prison. an nsa worker now faces murderer and child abuse charges after prosecutors say he beat to death his own 3-year-old son. b adopted the boy from south korea in october. they say the suspect told him his son slipped and fell in the bathtub. and for the second time in days, severe turbulence on a jet has sent passengers and crew members to a hospital. this time, on a cafe pacific flight from san francisco to hong kong. one passenger says it tossed people from their seats and the person in front of him managed to crack the overhead bin. wear your seat belt. we will be right back. óqoqúúñ

breaking news coming out of kiev in the ukraine, the fighting continues or at least the protests do we see a lot of outgoing fire power of some kind, we assume moltov cocktails and tracers. the music is still going, the protests keep going. the president remains defiant i can't a horrible scene in kiev this evening. a lot more in the news today, including a crew member to found two former navy s.e.a.l.s dead aboard the "maersk alabama" cargo ship. according to police, both men had been working as security contractors on that vessel. remember the "maersk alabama," the same ship featured in the tom hanks' film, "captain phillips" a movie about a hijacking in 2009 we cover here extensively. what else do we know about this situation? >> shep, authorities say the ship, the "maersk alabama" was suppose it had to leave port yesterday until a crew member found the two former navy s.e.a.l.s dead in one of their state rooms. now, the ship was located about

900 miles off the coast of east africa. it had been there -- arrived there two days earlier. you can see where this locations on the map here. now the security company that employed the former navy s.e.a.l.s provided a statement today that reads, in part, "there is no immediate indication as to the cause of death, but the deaths were not caused by operational activity." and local authorities saying that they will conduct an autopsy this week and hopefully get some clarity on what happened to these two former navy s.e.a.l.s. >> we spoke to the owner of this ship while it was going down in 2009, the way of the day is private security. did this one have it? >> this one did have private security and apparently these former navy s.e.a.l.s were part of the security team. experts in maritime security tell me this has become a common practice for u.s. merchant ships, especially since pirates hijacked the "maersk alabama," as we mentioned in 2009 where captain richard phillips was held hostage until navy s.e.a.l.s rescued him.

pennsylvania newspaper, "the daily item," that he indeed does believe his daughter may have been involved in more than one murder. you will remember, barbour and her newlywed husband, seen here, are both accused of killing a man they lured on craigslist, stabbing him around 20 times, according to authorities. both of them are now behind bars. now, miranda barbour reportedly said her victim deserved to die because he still offered to pay her for sex, even when she told him she was 16 years old. now, the self-confessed serial killer, whether she is that or not is another matter is reportedly giving investigators exact locations for her other crimes. investigators say there is still no evidence at all to prove her claims. let's get to phil gavin, former assistant director of the fbi in new york, now president of the guards mark, a global security company. good to see you. >> good afternoon, shep. >> i guess while investigating this horrible incident, tough look into the others. but so far, they don't have anything. >> you're absolutely right.

it's got to be a two-pronged, biif you are kated investigation. first of all, she needs somebody to really -- apsychologist to get to the bottom of what she said, the same time, talking about crimes committed, just can't put them in let's wait pile because it might be some truth to some of those things. so the investigators, the criminal investigators have to go and do what they have to do based on the leads that she might give them but at the same time, somebody really has to get to the bottom of her psychological makeup to see whether or not there is any credibility at all to these stories. >> bill covered a a lot of these stories when working in florida for many years. so often, killers, somebody goes out and kills somebody, they will make up a list of other crimes, having done some research on them some time, knowing who was killed and where and the basic circumstances, like you might find online and then sending investigators on this wild goose chase in an effort to buy time. >> absolutely true and that's

the former united states congressman has pleaded not guilty to porn charges in zimbabwe. and now, that former lawmaker will spend another night in jail before a second hearing on separate charges. yes, there's more. prosecutors say cops caught one-time illinois democratic congressman mel reynolds with some porn. a state-run newspaper quoted a source who claimed reynolds made pornographic movies himself, more than 100 porn know graphic movies while he was in zimbabwe. he is also accused of overstaying his visa and skipping out on a bit of a hotel tab, $25,000 worth of hotel tab. courtroom observers say reynolds appeared tired and confused in

sad news out of missouri. police are confident they found the body of a 10-year-old girl. she went missing yesterday if front of her neighbor's home. now the police say a local elementary school coach is in jail on suspicion on murder. the little girl was walking home yesterday evening when witnesses said they saw a man in a pickup truck take her away. that triggered amber alerts in surrounding states. late last night police arrested a 45-year-old named craig wood. and today the police chief said crews found what they believe the little girl's body inside his home. we are live in the chicago newsroom this morning. an elementary school coach, i don't e know how parents understand who they can even trust. >> it's so true. he does have a little bit of a checkered past here. a couple drug-related charges,
