it's my personality. >> so those crazy ideas on your "survivor" show come from your mind. >> i've tortured the family, including roma. >> i'm the test audience. i don't even like to swim. >> mark, let me ask both of you this. you put together this mini series for the history channel. block buster, huge, massive, historic ratings for the channel. nothing ever higher. why? why do you think it was such a big success? >> clearly the nation is hungry for god, who loves god, is one nation under god. a lot of the media is played as if americans don't love god. that's so not true. we've been 30 cities in 40 days. churches are full. some churches are asking regular church goers to come on saturday nights to make room for all the new people that want to get in on sundays. >> there are some churches

growing, then other churches are seeing declines. but this obviously resonated. "the passion of the christ" was one of the biggest blockbuster movies of all time. why do you think, roma? >> i think jesus hasn't been on the big screen since then. i think that we are visual learners. there's so much of what i remember as a child, i saw it in the movies. and the opportunity to see these important stories that are just part of who we are, see them brought to life on the screen, i think it makes that emotional connection and we retain that. i think it's useful for us. it's good information and it's inspiring. >> you go back to old hollywood and look at classics like "the ten commandments," or any of those movies, they were huge blockbusters. seems hollywood wants to go to the lowest common denominator. then these movies come out, your

mini series, huge ratings. is there a message here? "time" magazine, every year, "newsweek," their biggest selling issues when they put jesus on the cover. there's a message in here, isn't there? >> there's a message, and clearly there's a big thirst for the bible and jesus. the message is, let's make more about god and the bible. who wouldn't want to be with god every day, who wouldn't want to know jesus? we believe that thoroughly and the ratings show that. in canada, the bible series beat hockey. >> in canada? that's almost a religion, a separate religion. good point. what made you want to do this project? obviously you're well known for "touched by an angel," you're known for a lot of series on television and you put everything behind this. why? >> it came in as a whisper in our hearts, you know, and we

just felt the importance to do it. we sat down together over a cup of tea and mark said, you want to do what? the whole bible? and i said, yes, i think that's what we should do. and we shook hands on it and we decided we would do it together and we never looked back. and you though, i think when we originally started off on this journey, many people thought we were nuts. that we had lost our minds. >> you mean on the movie part or mini series part or both? >> well, both. now on the movie part i'm sure there are people thinking these two won't be quiet. we can't put them down. we had the bible series in 2013. we have "son of god" in 2014. but this is our story, our shared story. >> we're hollywood's noisiest christians and we're going to keep being noisy. >> you say that almost like it's viewed negatively. >> i think what the bible series

did, and this upcoming movie "son of god" it's almost given people permission to talk openly about their love of god. i feel like on a show like "the voice," that's 400 employees and you don't know everybody. but as a result of the bible series, at least 50 "the voice" employees came up to me and said, thank you so much for making this. it meant so much to my family. it's really given -- i said what's wrong? he said nothing, i'm just thanking you for the bible. >> did the freedom of the success of your other tv ventures allow you to pursue this? is it less of a passion, more of a business? >> we do have a day job and it's doing very well.

>> i think the success of our other shows and other projects allowed us the opportunity to, you know, we have the resources, we had the platform, we had the leverage to be able to do this. we came to it with no fear. we felt full of love. i think everything begins with intention, and our intention this this always was to bring these stories forward as the love story that they are, to bring this loving, healing, hopefulness. because i believe it's that, that people are thirsty for. either there's no god or there's only god. >> you look at america and you see cultural decline, you hear about it all the time. do you believe america culturally has deteriorated from say where our founders and framers started? >> well, obviously we are naturalized americans. we've been here like 25 years now. our kids are americans. but it is a nation built on the

bible and built on free enterprise. >> liberals hate when you say this is a judeo-christian country. i experience this every day. i believe america was founded on judeo-christian principles, period. >> for sure it was. we've traveled so much over the last few months in so many states and met so many good people who are so vibrant. i feel god's much alive. jesus is very much alive in this nation. it's almost like we've been on the election tour, city by city by city an we're going to elect jesus. >> i think if you turn the news on, you would think there's nothing but bad news everywhere. >> a lot of it. drugs, poverty, food stamps, people struggling. >> i understand, but i still think there needs to be more noise for the good guys and there are good people doing good things all over this country. >> when we come back, you felt

aren't you going to be our king? >> who do you think i am? >> you are the son of god. >> you can't have known this by what you know of me, peter. it has been revealed to you by god. you are peter, and on this rock i will build my church. >> another clip from the brand new movie "son of god" and we continue with the filmmakers. all right, there were times when i last interviewed you, roma, you told me that you felt that you had signs or a feeling or a belief that god was there while you were filming this and he wanted this project to happen. do you remember that? >> yes, of course i remember it. we prayed from the beginning of

this project, we prayed that we would -- that we would be able to tell the story and tell it truthfully. when we were onset and about to shoot the crucifixion sequence, which was the most challenging of sequences, lo jisicily, spiritually and emotionally, we asked everybody to send prayers to get through that one. and we had a man whose job it was to clear snakes and scorpions. on the morning of the crucifixion, he had cleared over 40 snakes from around the foot of the cross. you know, i think the symbolism of the snake wasn't lost on any of us, and we couldn't help but feel it was like a spiritual

clearing had gone in ahead and we have felt that all through the project and film, that there has been a kind of spiritual clearing. i think this film is particularly important for this generation that they would know and understand jesus, that they would have an opportunity to see what an amazing man he was, and how much god loved us that he sent us jesus. >> let me ask this, the clip that we just showed, and we will get to father morris here, but i actually went to a seminary in high school, and that biblical sequence, where he said who do you say i am, and peter said you are the son of god. the catholic church takes it as peter was the rock and the pope. i always felt there was a

spiritual element to that where he knew he was the son of god because it was revealed to his heart. father morris would argue with me -- no, you agree with me? this is what you do in the movie, you take big biblical stories, jesus walking on water, jesus saying to peter, i'll make you a fisher of men. the last supper. the crucifixion. you go through -- you don't tell the whole story, but you told snippets and put it together. how did that decision making process come about? >> we were only a few weeks into making the bible series when roma said mark, this should be a big movie. this should be scene in community on the big screen. and we decided okay. we had no idea, but we started making it. we knew the responsibility of that. we had done about 30 versions over a year, just trying to get

the feeling. we didn't want to tell people what to think or how to feel. we just wanted to present the story so you felt it and you would seek more. all those things you mentioned, that moment there where finally the disciples realized now, it's the son of god. they have been following a charismatic leader who may have been the next king david to fight theromans. >> it also shows their weakness. peter denied him three times. that's all included in the movie. but part of the mini series was in the movie, but it's mostly new material built around it, right? >> yes. so as mark mentioned, we would do these screenings every week in morocco, we had an editor and we would invite the cast and crew to come in when we were making the bible series. as the jesus narrative started to unfold, we decided there and

then to start shooting additional footage. >> so you shot all of this before the mini series came out? >> yes. it was all shot at the same time. >> not knowing you were going to do the movie? >> we knew we would put a movie together. we didn't know what kind of life the movie would have. we thought perhaps we would do special event screenings, that sort of thing. we showed it to a few people. they said you've really got to send this out to the studio. 20th century fox called and said, we love this. we're going to distribute it in 3,000 theaters and we're going to distribute it not just in english but in spanish, as well. >> there's only one controversy as it relates to the movie versus the mini series, and i asked this when you were last on the program. you have images in the mini series where you have the devil walking across and people said oh, they chose somebody that looks like obama. there. and that didn't show up in the

movie. on purpose, not on purpose? >> absolutely on purpose. >> you took it out on purpose? >> i did. i absolutely wanted the devil on the cutting room floor. >> really, why? >> i felt that the conversation that ignited after that moment in the mini series served to be such a distraction. and this movie is about jesus, and i didn't want to give satan anymore air time. >> you thought he got too much air time? >> way too much air time. >> it does look a little like obama. you didn't see that -- >> listen, it was never the intention. i'm -- i was -- >> do you regret it was in the first one? >> i regret it became the distraction it became. we were expecting jesus on the screen. i was sure that everybody would be speaking the name jesus, that would be the point of conversation around the water cooler. and i thought, isn't that just like the devil, to be the

narcissist that he is, that it became all about him. in this spiritual warfare of light and darkness, when you do something that's filled with light, as this is, the intention of this is to shine a light in the dark, that the darkness pushes back. and so any way, maybe it gave me too much pleasure to say that the devil was on the cutting room floor. but that's where he and where he remains. get you behind me satan. >> we'll take a break. more clips from the movie "son of god" and later we have a studio audience. they'll react to the film and much more as we continue. t!

edition of "hannity." we continue with roma downey and mark burnett. i watched this movie with a number of people. there wasn't a dry eye in the room. has that been the normal reaction? >> yeah, i think that people are just really touched by the story. it's deeply moving, and i think it's one of the beautiful things about being able to watch it collectively, in a cinematic experience, that, you know, there's something about experiencing the story and community and feeling the overwhelming love. you know, it plays out like a thriller. it's a political thriller on the one hand, three-pointed drama with the romans led by pilate and the disciples led by jesus. they're all on this collision path in jerusalem at passover which creates this ticking clock. it's highly charged and very

dramatic. woven through it is the beauty of the love story of god's love for humanity, that he sends jesus for us. and the actor who played jesus -- >> i thought he did a really -- obviously that's a hard role to play. i thought he captured what i would in my mind think jesus would be like. confident, strong, loving. he seemed to have it all put together. >> we wanted an actor that could portray the lion and the lamb. and i think that the compassion and tenderness that he brings to it on the one hand and then the strength and the charisma, it was a beautiful job. >> this went back to "the passion of the christ," very graphic, the crucifixion scene obviously the lashes being given out prior to that, carrying the cross, it's hard to watch. >> yeah, it is. >> we worked hard to get a pg-13

rating. but it's still really hard, especially because unlike "the passion" which only dealt with three days in jesus' life, in this one by the time he's arrested, you have fallen so in love with the humanity of jesus. it's god on earth, but you have fallen in love with the humanity. when he's arrested, people who have known the scripture their whole lives are watching this saying in one way i wish the story would change. >> it also showed jesus knowing that peter would betray him as peter said he wouldn't. or seeing in his own mind the vision of the crucifixion that was upcoming. that would be something that he knew, father, take this cross from me, et cetera. one thing that struck me, and i want to get my audience's take on this in the next segment, is how events today are similar to back then. you've got corrupt political leaders, you've got corrupt

politicians and ministers and power hungry people. it seems like it's not very different. >> there's a whole scene about when pilate asked jesus, what is truth? you knew pilate knew the truth, but for political reasons, he was willing to lie and condemn an innocent man. that still happens today. >> and then on the other hand, you have the pharisees, the leaders of the church that wanted him out of the way because he was a threat to their power. isn't that similar to what's going on in a lot of ways today? >> absolutely. a lot of things have changed, but humans haven't changed that much. >> we added a scene in there to show the ruthlessness of pilate when the people come to him and

say, you've taken the money that we were gathering for the temple am used it to build an aqueduct, and he says, really, did rome give you water or did your god give you water? >> it also shows, render to ceasar and then to god. my interpretation everything is god's and ceasar is nothing, i thought they always tried to trick him, tried to trap him. >> and it backfired on them every time. so much so that caifus kept telling off nickdemus. >> we'll bring our studio audience in next. encounter jesus. hollywood is not going to make big bucks just by putting jesus on the screen. they're going to make big bucks by putting jesus on the screen when there's faith behind it. that's why "the passion" worked and why this works and i thank you mark, and roma for doing that. it's not just jesus, it's people who believe that jesus was who he said he was. >> reverend, what were your thoughts? >> my jesus moment was mark and roma had a screening with 800 hispanic evangelicals right here in new york city. when he started multiplying the fish and the loves, all those pastors were just weeping. when the lights came on, i saw -- i think mark cried for the first time i've ever seen him cry. it's a universal story of the love of god and his provision for everybody. i think that's why -- >> what was the reaction in the room? >> what was a silent hush of

reverence and awe. >> were there a lot of tears? >> a flood of tears, just a flood of tears. it was like a wave of love washing over everybody when he lifted up that basket and multiplied. it was a moment. >> billy from "the blaze" welcome. how are you? >> good to see you. i think for me, mark joked about being the most boisterous christian couple in hollywood, and i think that's great. i think the other aspect of that is that the general public, christians, who have sometimes shunned hollywood a little bit, they can come forward and realize, you know what? hollywood is there for us. there are projects that can do well. i think it's a good message to sort of bring christians into the industry, become part of it. >> it's interesting from a financial perspective, these movies have done so well, and yet they're hard to often

produce. loren, you cover religion for the fox news channel and you've covered a lot of those stories. >> absolutely. there are more and more hollywood stories taking the bible, taking those stories and making it their own. but one of the things i love about this movie, one of the things you hear about jesus is he popped on the scene. but you start with the gospel of john, which is important theologically. john's gospel has the "i am" statements. i am the light of the world. i am the good shepherd. this is not -- this is to take you back to the burning bush when moses said, who do i say is sending me? and god said, i am. when you bring it out in the beginning that he was present in the garden, in the burning bush, in the flood, you're actually

connecting those two things. >> that's a great point. that did tie it all together. ralph reed of the faith and freedom coalition, welcome. >> thank you, sean. i think that mark and roma are a national treasure, because they have this platform through the success that they have had in their careers in film making and television, they've done extremely well. they didn't need to do this for a career reason, they did this because of their love of the lord. i think the powerful message that comes through, and i've seen the film and i urge everybody to see it and bring a friend, because at you captured in that clip you showed earlier, when jesus was on the earth, some people said he was crazy, a lunatic. some people said he was a prophet. some said he was just a teacher. >> everyone says that about you. >> and some tried to make him a

we turn it back over to the studio audience. kirsten, that scene was particularly powerful. as i was watching that, i don't want people to take this the wrong way, of all the apostles, he's the guy that will betray jesus and i'm thinking, wow. >> it's incredible. but god knew before hand that was part of the plan. and jesus knew. he knew, and that's why he kissed jesus on the cheek and said he knew he was going to betray him. but it had to happen for his sacrificial atonement on the cross to happen. but i thank you so much for making this film, especially for my generation, that are growing up around so much cynicism. it's a very important perspective, because it's one of the most non-churched, cynical generations. for them to see this and see that he was the son of god but also the son of man. that he was human, he was like

us. it causes them to ask those questions. roma, you said it caused a reporter to really investigate who jesus was, and it raises those questions, the most fundamental important questions. that's why i'm so thankful for this film. >> it's not preachy. you tell them the story. and if people are impacted by it, they're impacted by it. carol, hi. >> i believe that this film has the potential to really reach the secular, as well as the christian audience, and for christians, it tells us about -- it reminds us that jesus, as he was leaving the earth, he said greater works than these will we do. i believe in america and sometimes in parts of the world, we act as if we are powerless, and we're not supposed to be powerless. one of us is supposed to be able to put 10,000 to flight and we've lost sight of that. the last thing i want to say is, sean, we're waiting for you in tennessee.

true hope and true hope is found in jesus christ. i add my voice to those thanking you for bringing this message out of hollywood. there still is hope for hollywood. >> steven mansfield has a great story. you've followed the faith of presidents and you also wrote "killing jesus," the faith of george w. bush and other prominent leaders. so i'm interested from that perspective to the movie, what did you think? >> because i like history and writing about history, i was intrigued by the earthiness of the story. i like the fact that they show it without getting the xxx rating for the violence, and i like the fact that there's a lot of race on the screen. you see more diverse races and different ethnicities. this is very much in the gospels. he was defending a certain segment of the society. the historian likes the fact

that they captured that on the screen, because the whole idea of the incarnation is that the son of god entered into a time and period, in the muck and mire in it is the son of god entered a time, period. muck, mire and difficult physical body. i am proud of them for getting that on the screen. >> the thing that stand out to go on steven avenue point. is that all of humanity is just failed. and that, that he recognized that and that that was the purpose of his being and going through the sacrifice is that every, all sin, falling short sort of thing. you see that today. you see it in the movie as well. >> we are really conscious to show the flaws of everybody in the movie except for the only perfect character is jeep susus. the die sisciples, romans, and g people said they felt what it was look to be with the

disciples. a scary time. >> i had the opportunity to step into playing the role of mary, mother of jesus. >> you did a great job. >> thank you. while we know she was the mother of the son of god. she was also the mother of a son. and -- you know, i have loved jesus my whole life. i have never fully kipd econsid what it must have been like to be his mother. stand at the foot of the cross and see her son be murdered. >> three people there. >> three. the rest ran away. they were scared. jesus said seven things from the cross. yet one of the things in the midst of all that he took time to love his mother. which i think says so much about him. >> yeah. >> all right. coming up. closing thoughts on this blockbuster new movie "son of god" coming of right after the break.
