fun. >> i can't help it. it is my personality. >> so those crazy ideas on your survivor show come from your mind. >> well, i torture the family, including roma. >> we're the test audience, i am somebody who even scuba dives, and i'm somebody who doesn't like to swim. >> let me ask both of you, you put together the mini series for the history channel, blockbuster huge, massive ratings, historic for the channel, nothing ever higher, why, why do you think it is such a big success? >> clearly it is a nation who loves god, one nation under god. and a lot of media is played as if americans don't love god. that is so not true. we have been to 30 cities in 40 days, some churches are asking to make room for new people to get in on sundays.

>> well, there are some churches growing and you have other churches that they have seen declines. but this obviously resonated. the "passion of the christ" was one of the biggest blockbusters of all time, why do you think, roma. >> well, you know, i think that jesus has not been on the big screen, we are visual learners, so much of what i learned as a child i saw it in the movies. and the opportunity to hear the important stories that are just part of who we are, see them brought to life on the screen. i think it makes that emotional connection and we retain that. it is useful for us. it is good information and it is inspiring. >> if you go back to hollywood and look at the classics like "the ten commandments," or ben hur, they're huge successes. all of a sudden, these movies come out, one after another,

your mini series, now this movie is about to break, "the passion of the christ." huge ratings, is there a message here? time magazine, news week, their biggest selling issue when they put jesus on the cover around christmastime. there is a message here. >> there is a message and clearly there is a big thirst for the bible, big thirst for jesus, and the message is let's make more about the bible and about god. who wouldn't want to be with god every day? who wouldn't want to know jesus? we believe that thoroughly. the ratings show that. you know in canada, the bible series beat hockey. >> in canada? that is almost a religion, obviously you're known for "touched by an angel" you put a

lot into this, why? >> it came as a whisper, in our hearts we just felt the importance to do it and we sat down together over a cup of tea and mark said you want to do what? the whole bible? and i said yes, i think that is what we should do. and we shook happeneds on it and we decided we would do it together and never looked back. and when we originalsly started o -- originally started on the movie, we never looked back. i am sure that there are people thinking these two won't be quiet, you know, we can't put them down. we had the bible series in 2013, the son of god in 2014, but this is our story, our shared story. >> we're hollywood's noisiest christians, and we're going to keep being noisy.

>> do you say that like it is viewed negatively? >> we don't think so. i think what the bible has done in the son of god, it has almost given people permission to come up and talk openly about their love of god. we don't know everybody and certainly don't know what they're thinking personally, but as a result, at least 50 people came up to me privately, mr. burnett, thank you very much for making this movie, it meant so much to me and my family. we thought oh, we're going to get searched, the tsa guy pulled us out. i said what is wrong? he said nothing, just thank you for the bible. >> now did the previous success of other adventures just allow you the freedom to pursue the passion, because the freedom -- is it less than a passion, more of a business? >> we have a day job that is

going very well. >> this is the extent of our other shows, the product, we had the resources, the platform, the leverage, you know, to be able to do this. we came to it with no fear. we felt full of love. i think everything begins with intention. and our intention in this always was to bring these stories forward as the love story that they are. to bring this loving healing hopeful message. because i believe it is that that people are thirsty for. either there is no god or there is only god. >> uh-huh. what about -- you look at america, you see cultural decline. you hear about it all the time. do you believe america culturally has deteriorated from say where our founders and framers started? >> well, i do -- we are naturalized americans, we have been here about 25 years now. our kids are americans. but the nation built on two

things, the bibles and free enterprise. >> liberals hate it when you say it is a judeo-christian society, but i believe it was founded on those principle principles. >> it was, and we've traveled so much in so many cities and met so many good people who are so vibrant. i feel god is very much alive in this nation. jesus is very much alive in this nation. on the election tour, city by city by city. >> i think certainly you know if you turn the news on you would think that there is nothing but bad news everywhere. >> a lot of it. >> there is, drugs, poverty, depending on the government, food stamps, people struggling. >> i understand, but i still think there needs to be more noise for the good guys and there are good people doing good things all over this country. >> all right, now when we come back, you felt some sort of

>> who do you think i am? >> you are the son of god. >> you can't have known this by what you know of me, peter. it has been revealed to you by god. you are peter, and on this rock i will build my church. >> another clip from the brand-new blockbuster, "son of god." and now we continue with the filmmakers, mark burnett and roma downey. there were times when i last interviewed you, roma, that you said you had signs or a feeling or belief that god was there while you were filming this and that you wanted this project to happen. remember that? >> yes, of course i remember it.

we prayed from the beginning of this project. we prayed that we would be able to tell the story effectively, make those emotional connections and tell the story truthfully. when we were on set and we were about to shoot the crucifixion sequence which was the most challenging of sequences, logistically, emotionally, spiritually, we asked everybody to send prayers to make sure we would get through that one. and we had a man whose job on the set was to clear snakes and spid spiders. on any given day he cleared one or two snakes. on the morning of the crucifixion, he got up and had a cloth bag that he used, and he had cleared 40 snakes from the area of the cross. and i think the symbolism of the snake and the cross was not lost. and it was like a spiritual

cleansing had gone ahead. and we felt it all through the film that there has been a kind of spiritual clearing. because i think the film is very important particularly for our new generation, that they would know and understand jesus, that they would have an opportunity to see what an amazing man he was and how much god loved us that he sent us jesus. >> let me ask you, the clip we showed -- i'll get to the good father morris who will probably correct me because i'm probably wrong. but i actually went to a seminar in college, and that sequence was shown, where he said my father revealed it into your heart. upon peter the rock, the pope, i have always thought there was a more spiritual element to that where he knew that he was the son of god because it was

revealed to his heart. father morris will argue with me in a minute, but no -- right? you agree with me. and this is what you do in the movie. you take big biblical stories, jesus walking on water. jesus saying to peter, i'll make you a fisher of men. the last supper. the crucifixion. you don't tell us the whole story but you tell snippets and put it altogether, how did that decision-making process come about? >> this movie was being edited. just so you know we were only a few minutes from making the series when she said mark, this should be a big movie. this should be seen in community on the big screen. and we decided okay. had no idea it would get distributed. we started making it. we knew the responsibility of it. we had done about 30 versions a year. we didn't want to tell people

what to think or how to feel. we just wanted to present the story so you felt it and would seek more. all the things you mentioned. that moment there, finally the disciples have realized now it's the son of god, they have been following a charismatic leader. >> that shows their weakness, they all ran when he was arrested. peter did deny him three to him -- times. it is mostly new material built around it, right? >> yes, so as mark mentioned we would do these screenings every week in morocco. we had an editor with us. we would put these assemblies up and invite the cast and crew to come in when we were making the bible series. and as the jesus narrative started to unfold and we just saw how extraordinary it was, we

decided then and there to shoot additional footage. >> so you actually shot this before the movie series came out, not knowing you were going to do the movie shot. >> no, we knew we would put a movie together, what we didn't know was what kind of life the movie would have. what we thought is we would do special events, screenings, that sort of people. we showed it to a few people. they said you really have to accepted send it out to the studio it is so good. and fox called, and said we loved it. we'll distribute it to theaters, not just in english but spanish as well. >> there is only one controversy as it relates to the movie versus the mini series. and i asked this when you were last on the program. you have images in the mini series where you have the devil walking across and people said oh, they chose somebody who looks like obama there, okay? and that didn't show up in the movie. on purpose, not on purpose?

>> absolutely on purpose. >> you took it out on purpose? >> i did. i absolutely wanted the devil on the cutting room floor. >> really, why? sn >> i felt that the conversation that ignited after that moment in the mini series served to be such a distraction. and this movie, "son of god," is a movie about jesus and i just didn't want to give satan anymore air time. >> you thought he got too much air time? >> i thought he got way too much air time. >> because it does look a little like obama, you didn't see that? >> well, listen, it was never the intention. >> do you regret it was in first one? >> well, i regret it became the distraction that it became. you know, we were expecting jesus on the screen, i was sure that everybody would be speaking the name jesus. that that would be the point of the conversation around the water cooler. and i thought isn't that just like the devil to be the

narcissist that he is, it's all about the devil. you know when you do something that is filled with light. as this is, the intention of this is to shine the light in the dark, that the darkness pushes back, so anyway, maybe it gave me too much pleasure to say the devil was on the cutting room floor. but that is where he is and that is where he remains. get you behind me, satan. >> all right, we'll take a break, don't go anywhere. son of god, later, we have a studio audience and we'll have their reaction to the film and much more as we continue. lookin' good, flo! feelin' good! feelin' real good! mark burnett, "son of god" is their brand-new movie. i watched this movie with a number of people. there was not a dry eye in the room. has that been the normal reaction? >> yeah, i think that people are just really touched by the story. it is deeply moving. and i think it is one of the beautiful things about being able to watch it collectively in the cinematic experience. you know, there is something about experiencing the story and community and feeling the overwhelming love. you know -- because it plays out like a thriller, really, it is a political thriller on one hand, three-pointed drama, with the romans led by pontius, and the disciples led by jesus and they're all in this collision path to jerusalem that creates this ticking clock. it is highly charged and very dramatic. and then woven through it, of

course it is the story of jesus. >> i thought he captured what i would in my mind think jesus would be like, confident, strong, loving. i mean, he seemed to have all the ingredients. >> he had the ingredients. we wanted the actor who could portray the lion and the lamb. and i think the compassion and tenderness he brings to it on the one hand, and then the strength and charisma, beautiful job. >> this went back to passion of the christ, very graphic, the crucifixion scene, obviously, the lashes being given out prior to that, carrying the cross. it is hard to watch. >> it is hard to watch, i mean, we worked hard to get a pg 13 rating but it is still really hard to watch.

especially because -- unlike the passion, which dealt with three days in jesus's life, so when he is arrested you don't really have a back story. in this, by the time he is arrested, which you saw, you have fallen so much in love with the humanity. when he is arrested, people who have known this scripture their whole life are watching this saying in one way, i wish the story would change, of course they don't really, but -- >> knowing that peter would betray him as peter said he wouldn't, and then he told him or seeing in his own mind the vision of the crucifixion, that would be something he knew, father take this cross, et cetera. one thing that really struck me, i want to get my audience's take on this in the next segment is how events today are similar to back then. you have got corrupt political leaders. you have corrupt politicians and

ministers and power-hungry people. it seems like it is not very different in spite of maybe the advancement and technology and everything else, a lot of things remain the same. >> especially in that scene where pilate meets jesus for the first time. there is a scene where he asks jesus, what is truth. you knew pilot knew he was innocent, he knew the truth. but for political ex-paid expediency, that still happens today. >> you have the scribes, the leaders of the church, they wanted him out of the way because of the power. a lot of similarities. >> absolutely, humans have not changed much. >> we added a scene in there to

jesus moment in my life because we encounter jesus, and hollywood is not going to make big bucks just by putting jesus on the screen. they're going to make big bucks putting jesus on the screen when there is passion behind it. it is not just jesus, it is people who believe jesus was who he said he was. >> what was your jesus moment? >> my jesus moment was there was a screening with 800 evangelicals, and when he started to multiply the fish and the loaves, all the pastors just started weeping. i think for the first time, we saw them cry. it is a universal story, for the love. >> what was the reaction in the

room? >> it was like a silent hush. it was like a wave of love washing over everybody when he -- lifted up that basket. and multiplied it. it was a moment. >> billy from the blaze, welcome, how are you? >> how are you. >> good to see you. >> i think for me, mark joked about being the most boisterous christian couple in hollywood. that is great, i think because hollywood can open up and talk about it. the general public, christians who sometimes have shunned hollywood a little bit, they can come forward and go you know what? hollywood is there for us, there are projects that can do well. so i think it is sort of amessao the industry. it is a good product, don't shun it. >> these movies have done so

well and yet they're off hard to produce. lauren, you cover religion for the fox news channel and covered a lot of stories. >> well, absolutely, the movies coming out, there are more and more hollywood movies, taking the story and making it their one, one of the things you hear about jesus is that he sort of popped out of the screen. you started with john, john's gospel has the "i am" statements, i am the shepherd, i am the light. this is to take you back to the burning bush, when moses asked god, who shall i say is sending me? and god says "i am." jesus is making a direction connection to that moment. and when you bring out in the beginning that he was present in

the garden, in the burning bush, in the flood, you're absolutely connecting those things about the movie. >> that is a great point, it did t tie it altogether. ralph reid, thank you. >> and mark and roma are a national treasure because they have had this platform and success. they have done extremely well, they didn't need to do this for a career reason. they did this because of the love of the lord. and i think the powerful message that comes through, sean, i urge everybody to watch this and see it and bring a friend. because as you captured in that clip you showed earlier, when jesus was on the earth, some people said he was crazy, a lunatic. some said he was crazy, just a

special edition of "hannity," we turn things back over to our studio audience as we continue with mark burnett and roma downey. what do you think, kirsten, that scene was particularly powerful. i don't want you to take this the wrong way, but of all the apostles, he is the one who will betray jesus. >> god knew that was the part of the plan and jesus knew. that is why he kissed him on the cheek and knew it would happen, that was part of the plan to happen and his resurrection. but what i love about this film and thank you so much for making it. especially for my generation, the younger people growing up around so much cynicism. >> it is a very important perspective because it is one of the most non-churched cynical generations. for them to see this and see he was the son of god and also he

was the son of man. he was human, like us. it causes him to ask the questions, it caused a reporter who didn't know god, who was not a believer, who asked questions, i am so thankful for this film. >> one thing i liked about the film, he is not preaching. if people are impacted by it, they're impacted. carol? >> i believe that this film has the potential to really reach the secular as well as the christian audience. and that for christians it tells us about -- it reminds us that jesus as he was leaving the earth, he said that greater works will we do. and i believe in america, and other parts of the world we act as though we're powerless. we're not powerless, one of us was supposed to be able to put 10,000 to flight, and we've lost sight of that.

not changed. people are still looking for true hope. and true hope is found in jesus christ. so i add my voice to thinking you for bringing this message out of hollywood, there is still hope for hollywood. >> and steve mansfield has had had an interesting career, you followed the faith of presidents and george w. bush and other prominent leaders. so i'm interested from that perspective of the movie, what do you think? >> i was intrigued by the earthiness of the story. you know, we have all seen the movies that are ghosty, you know, jesus floating across the scene. i like the fact especially that there is a lot of race on the screen. you see more diverse races, more -- different ethnicities, the

historian in me likes the fact that they brought that to the fore and captured it. the whole time period, the difficult physical bodies, representing god to the world. i'm really proud of them for getting that on the screen. >> i think the thing that stands out just to go on steven's point is all of humanity has just failed. he recognized that. and that was the purpose for going through the sacrifice, all sin falling short today, you see that in the movie, as well. >> we were very conscious to show the flaws of everybody in the movie, except for the only perfect character is jesus, all the disciples had flaws, the romans, the temple authorities. and so he could really identify. young people said they really felt what it was like to be with the disciples, such a scary time. >> i also had the opportunity to
