1:30 pm
at the addresses on the screen. until next time, i hope you learn to be more of a healthy you. healthy is as healthy does. i'm jamie colby. it's time for sunday house call. >> welcome to sunday house call. with us is chief of robotic surgery. >> and here to help us clean up our act issiegel. good morning, doctors. great to have you here. let's get right away started with this. we again with a new warning that concerns pregnant women. there's a new study showing
1:31 pm
expectant moms who take tylenol could increase their child's risk of adhd. is it safe at all for women who are pregnant to take acetaminoph acetaminophen? >> we talked about this in adults. it causes liver toxicity. pregnancy, 64,000 mothers and children, they looked at it. if they took one day of tylenol a week and the first trimester, it increasing attention deficit in children. they are taking it for headache, fever and pain. the big result of this study is we want you to take it for fever, because fever is dangerous in pregnancy. so it's the safest medication to take during pregnancy. but try to avoid this for any kind of headache and pain. a big teaching for pregnant women is to try to avoid this as
1:32 pm
much as you can unless it's a high fever, because high fever during pregnancy causes birth defect and a lot of things. the second thing is the timing of taking tylenol. if you take it during the first trimester, it increases attention deficit risk by 9%. this is the time where the nerves and all the end krin and hormonal changes are taking on. if you take it in the second and third stritrimester, the risk increases to 68%. >> what about if your back is really killing you at the end. >> patients come to me and say what do i take? i say nothing. i feel more certain of that,
1:33 pm
because we always felt that the one thing could you take was acetaminophen, maybe tums. we don't want people taking ibuprofen or aspirin because it increases the risk of bleeding and early miss carriage. the problem is these are over-the-counter medications. i agree with david on the issue of fever, but you know who should make that decision? your doctor, not you. don't go to the store and say i have a 103 fever, i need tylenol. if nothing else, this is what it brings home. many people think oh, it's just a tylenol. the truth is, it's got active chemicals in it. this is a lot of patients, over 60,000. we have to figure out why this is happening. is it affecting the brain?
1:34 pm
is it affecting the leveiver. >> it changes a lot of hormones in the kids. they also mentioned that through the placenta, this can get to the kids and cause liver toxici toxicity. >> thank you doctor. one of the most commonly used tools in a medical office, but how clean are stethoscopes? according to a new study, not as clean as we would like. do you clean your stethoscope between every patient? >> i got to tell you, i thought i was neurotic. i actually do. i thought i was crazy. we sit there focusing on hand washing. patients are washing us. are we wearing gloves. >> but do they really do that? they're running around, grabbing paperwork and going from person to person. >> i hope most of them are doing this. this is an interesting study because it shows there's a lot
1:35 pm
of bacteria on the part of the stethoscope that you put on your back or your chest. you may be sweating. don't you want your can doctor to use an alcohol swab after that? it's simple to wipe down the part of the stethoscope that touched the patient. even the tube. these things, we're wearing them all day long. i'm wearing them from one patient to the next. the study did also show mrsa on some of these stethoscopes. that is the super bug. the one thing is it doesn't show which path logical bacteria are there and can they actually cause infection. i would like to see the study which is rammed into hospitaling right now. is it passing from doctor's lab coats to stethoscopes to patients. put a little alcohol on your stethoscope. >> what if i go to the doctor and say hi, doc, would you wash
1:36 pm
that? will he just make a joke about it. >> you're not insulting him. but it's perfectly your right to say please wash your hands or stethosco stethoscope. fortunately i don't carry a stethoscope anymore. but thislele study th study tha mayo klinic is very critical. >> 89 different little bacterias? >> the tip of the fingers had about 467 of them. the thumb was like 37. >> and your tie? >> that's a good one. this is another one. so if the doctor actually leans over to hook at the stethoscope, the tie that gets contaminated and this goes on from patient to
1:37 pm
patience. that's one of the reasons why pediatricians wear a bow tie. >> lab coats are loaded with bacteria. >> this is another war story that comes in. there's another story that was done in indiana. they find out that the doctors are not washing their hands correctly. only 13%. and 5% do it correctly. you want to really wash them with the palm of your hand. scrub in between. make sure you go at least 30 seconds and wash it correctly and dry it. and it becomes your habit. >> it's really a big problem. >> those hand sanitizers, those foams, they're on the outside of every hospital now. please use them when you're leaving the room. spread from patient to patient. >> i thought it was nice when the doctor took the stethoscope to warm it up before they used
1:38 pm
it, but no more. sorry about your tie, too. >> i thought they did it to look smart. >> got to change at that once in a while. >> that was a great tip, guys. a new medical development for people who need it most. a doctor ventured to the caribbean where he helped establish a cutting-edge surgery center for cancer patients.
1:39 pm
of course i had no idea what it was. i felt like my feet were going to sleep. it progressed from there to burning... to like 1,000 bees that were just stinging my feet.
