hello and good morning. it is saturday the 8th of march, 2014. a boeing 777 vanishing mid flight and search and rescue crews are scrambling at this hour to find out what happened to 239 people. how does a jumbo jet just disappear. even more people have stopped looking for work all together. so why is the president in miami selling student loans and more debt to our unemployed dead people?
3:01 am
and a republican rallying cry. >> get out of the health care business, get out of the education business, let the sleeping giant of american enterprise create prosperity again. governor perry was not alone in firing up the crowd. we have your cpac highlights, fox and friends begins right now. we begin this morning with a fox news alert, a search under way at this hour for a malaysia airlines plane vanished, carrying 239 passengers on board, at least three americans, one of them an infant. >> overnight naval vessels and three helicopters were isnsent the area where the airline last made contact.
3:02 am
>> the plane that was heading to beijing lost contact a for two hours, that was about 1:30 p.m. yesterday. there was no sign of problems on the plane or bad weather in the area. anxious relatives are camping out at the beijing airport waiting for any kind of news? the question is how does a plane just disappear? j.p., thank you for joining us this morning. what's so scary about this, is that you think about crashes happening on takeoff or landing, not a plane dropping out of the sky. >> not a plane as modern than this, the only way this happenses is that the crew becomes incapacitated. you have an explosion, you have a hijack, you have some type of malfunction of the aircraft that eliminates any transmissions, you have an aircraft that disappears with not one transmission by the pilots,
3:03 am
that's extremely unusual and very suspicious. >> i was speaking with you earlier and you said that the idea that both pilots become incapacitated, natural causes, is not really likely, what's the likelihood that an electrical failure could have caused all this and what could have caused this electrical failure? >> this is not -- the 777 won't have a computer failure. the pilots even at the very least of everything failing would be back to the battery bus. the aircraft was actually lost 40 minutes after takeoff and the south vietnamese radar took -- 120 miles off the coast of south vietnam. so my initial point, two hours would have put him over ho chi
3:04 am
minh city. they have not picked up wreckage as of the last time i checked. >> if it crashed into ho chi minh city we would have known about it. >> or anywhere on that island, that peninsula. >> take us through what exactly is happening now, we understand that we were just reporting that an electronic signal was picked up. what does that mean and how likely is it that they will find some sort of intact wreck contact? when does that signal pick up? when it crashes? or on descent, how does it happen? >> i was following an advanced radar position that. track does not coincide with two hours when i was looking at it. got up to 35,000, was at its cruising speed. now what you also have is a device called acars, that's transmitting everything that
3:05 am
aircraft is doing, it's transmitting automatically. so both are transmitting automatically. so in this case, they don't have to wait to get the crash data recorder, wherever that aircraft crashed. it would be transmitting on the way down. >> so we would know? >> they would be transmitting back to boeing and back to malaysia. >> why is there this mystery? so then therefore it might have been some sort of electrical failure to your point because otherwise it would be transmitting that whole time. they would know where this thing is? >> they wouldn't know it exactly. but the vietnamese navy has pinpointed it, spotting a signal, seeing an aircraft descending. >> aren't pilots trained to try to communicate until the very end? >> until the very end, every crash voice recorder i have ever heard, to the very end, they're
3:06 am
fighting and yelling and shouting and coaxing the airplane and doing all kinds of things, that's what you're trained for. and that transmission is automatically going out. it's a reflex. you automatically hot mike and you're broadcasting and you're busy in there. so it's so unusual. i hope its not a duplication of a malaysian that has never been determined or the cause back in 1977, they lost a b-737 that did a high dive. there was a fight in the cockpit, there was a possibility that there was a hijack and the crew went in, or the crew itself, one of the crewmembers, killed another crewmember and took the airplane in. but since there was nothing ever left of that aircraft, from a high dive all the way in, it's a mystery. >> we don't have the double door
3:07 am
system, where there's a little vestibule, pilots come out, the door locks, then you open up the other door and you go out. in most of the aircraft, you'll notice when the pilot comes out one door, the flight attendants move a cart up there, and they stand there. >> so you don't think that's sufficient to protect the cockpit. >> i never did, right from the get-go, when they started doing that system. i argued against it. fought against it, argued with the dot. i fought for a double door system. >> there was a plane crash, a few years ago, maybe 10 years ago, with a pga golfer on bore. >> a learjet. >> and the pilot had passed out, he had passed out, they were not able to communicate with anyone on board and it was veering off for hours flying. and there was some sort of an atmospheric issue inside the aircraft, right? >> what they had not done is pressurized the aircraft.
3:08 am
that particular learjet has the levers outside. and it was not changed over properly. so they took off, very few commercial pilots unless you're military and fighters have ever been into an a isobaric chamber. so what they did was climb, and the pilot climbed right with the aircraft and did not stop at 5,000 feet. they began to fall asleep. pilots, passengers, everybody. so when the aircraft was on autopilot, it flew until it ran out of gas. they launched fighters to take it down, but they didn't have to. but that also happened in an md md-80 to cypress. they thing would have started the desent into athens airport. and then what?
3:09 am
>> thank you for your time today. >> and a reminder too that these airplanes really are safe. it's a lot more hazardous to be driving a a car. >> far more. >> it's more hazardous to take a shower, i think. >> it is. >> j.b., thank you. >> my pleasure. nine minutes after the hour, we do have some other stories making headlines. on to another fox news alert. new overnight, russia tightens its grip in ukraine. the soldiers reported crashed through the gates, throwing stun grenades and cut phone lines. ukrainian troops were then told to pledge allegiance to russia. focus now shifting to russian president vladimir putin and a theory that the kremlin was intent on fuelling the protest

4:02 am
signs of problems from the plane or bad weather in the area as the search continues anxious relatives are camping out at the beijing airport waiting for any type of news. malaysia, china, vietnam and now singapore have joined in that search and rescue effort in the south china sea. what exactly are authorities looking for at this hour? scott brenner joins us now with more. i wish you were here under better circumstances, but what exactly are rescue crews trying to find right now? are they trying to track down any kind of electronic communication signal. >> they're going to look for any kind of debris, any kind of floatsome out there. they do have beacons in the flight data reporters and the voice recorders, but that doesn't operate for a very long time. it will go for probably a couple of days and then that signal
4:03 am
will die out. but they're looking at a variety of things here, one of the things that some of these newer aircraft have is they are in constant contact electronically with their maintenance facilities. and it was designed so as an airplane is traveling, the maintenance data is always being updated so as soon as that aircraft lands, they know if there's any maintenance problems, they can fix them right away. so there's probably some maintenance da out there right now that the airline is probably looking at trying to detect if they can see if there's anything a that could have been going wrong with that aircraft. >> so, scott, this is an unusual case, am i right in saying that commercial airliners do not drop out of the sky without any communication from the pilot, that doesn't happen, does it? >> fortunately it does not happen. but it is not a rare occurrence. the air france case, the pilots, where they're in a part of the world where there's not a lot of communication, not a lot of radar coverage. so you had an aircraft that all
4:04 am
of a sudden, just basically disappeared. and it took quite some time before they were able to find any of that aircraft. >> but pilots are certainly trained to communicate until the very end, you know, it's almost, you know, a reflex for them. so what's the likelihood that every single signal on the plane could have failed by natural causes? you hate to say the word terrorism, but that's something that comes to mind in a post-9/11 world. >> sure. i mean, i guess i got to caution folks, that early on in any crash, that's always a lot of speculation of what could and could not have happened and a lot of times they're not always correct. so i don't know if we need to go there yet. but when pilots are flying, they're basically hitting their marks, x number, x number, i'll check in again in 15 minutes.
4:05 am
we had them checking out of the malaysia air space and never making it to that vietnamese air space. you have an area that there that although it's quite large, they can narrow that down. so you're going to start to see some kind of debris, something that's going to be found in that water. >> this electronic signal, we were talking to an aviation expert earlier on the show saying this particular aircraft was equipped with a communication system that is constantly sending out data back and forth. so when even a toilet flushes, it's being sent out somewhere, this date is being sent out somewhere. so even on descent, this aircraft would have been sending out data and apparently it wasn't? >> that's what i was just talking about earlier is the data was designed for the maintenance facility. so that's what i would like to see is talk to the malaysian authorities and say what kind of data are you pulling from that, from that area? i mean what was the aircraft saying? did it all of a sudden just stop
4:06 am
dead? or were there other signals that you saw that may have indicated something. >> what's so troubling here is you think of all the risk in air travel, being ones assent and descent, takeoff and landing. >> that is the most dangerous part of air travel is that landing and takeoff. but that is the safest mode of transportation out there, but yes, midair or once you hit cruising altitude, very, very rare that you're going to have some issues up there. >> 239 people on board, and the families and friends just waiting for answers, the world waiting for answers. when will we find anything out? >> again, that's hard to say. i mean, again going back to that air france flight, i mean it was almost two years before we found all the flight data recorders and the voice cockpit recorders. i think we found the tail
4:07 am
