market circles for a long time and may shape the 2014 and 2016 elections. have a great weekend everybody. i'll see you on the five. >> a yet with 239 passengers on board vanishes off radar and the search continues for any trace of that airport. we'll bring you the latest in a live report moments away. also the latest on the gathering of conservatives looking down the line to the fights ahead. you'll hear from possible presidential hopefuls offering a strong message they hope will stir voters up before november and even down the line to 2016. campaign will be joining us live in the midst of all of it here in d.c. and you'll meet a courageous 4-year-old with a medical mystery. she is suffering with polio type
9:01 am
symptoms and doctors don't know why. she is one of 25 children coping with the illness that's leaving all of them with paralysis in their arms and legs. you'll hear more of her story and why her mom isn't losing hope. >> live from the nation's capitol, starts right now. >> and to begin with the baffling mystery with investigators still searching for any sign of that jet with more than 200 people on board. malaysia airlines lost contact a few hours after that aircraft left on his way to beijing. we also know there are americans on that passenger list. the latest now from david who is in bangkok thailand with the latest. >> yeah, aircraft are important seeing two oil slicks during their search in the south china sea for the lost malaysia
9:02 am
airline jet. they're believed to be from fuel tanks from a downed plane. no word that they have found the plane. now aircrafts and ships from four countries have been searching the south china sea for the plane all day. the boeing 777 went missing in the early hour of this morning local time on a flight from the malaysia capitol to beijing in china. it had 227 passengers on board and 12 crew. there were 14 different nationalities on the plane. including three americans. including a baby. 150 of the passengers on board were chinese nationals. contact was lost with the plane about two hours into it's flight. the route is over the south china sea near the coast of vietnam during that time. vietnam has said the plane didn't enter it's air space. the plane went off radar south of vietnam.
9:03 am
weather along the route was reported to be good at that time. friends have been waiting anxiously for the news. some voiced their frustration at the lack of information about the plane. the boeing 777 200 is a long range aircraft and was introduced in 1995. it's in service in many airlines around the world and has a good safety record. the airline also has a very good safety record. >> thank you very much. now, for more on the search that's underway for that aircraft, let's go to retired air force lieutenant general tom. thank you for joining us, sir. i know you have been involved in these kind of search operations. the most difficult aspect of this, of course, is that this jet disappeared off the radar a few hours after taking off and yet there is still no indication as to what happened even though they found some oil slicks on the ocean in that area: what do
9:04 am
you see as the way to go forward in a search like this? >> well, i was involved with one of these in 1983 off of the island. first of all, we have got to locate the debris field. we can talk about what may have happened but the fact is, locating the debris field and what i'm kind of surprised is that it's only oil slicks. if it were a bomb or explosion it would be debris spread over a large area because the airplane was probably up at 38,000 feet or so. so it would spread out a lot. if it just went down in a straight dive which is very perplexing, you would probably not have it and that may be the oil slick. so right now they're in the search and rescue. i'm very skeptical if there's going to be any rescue in this accident. it was off the canal peninsula in vietnam. i spent a year there so i know it well.
9:05 am
sounds like they may have had a radar contact at the general area. i would recommend that the u.s. government volunteer our global hawk that has three different sensors on it that can look with infrared radar as well as elect electrooptical and they can get down there quickly and take a look. there will be manned aircraft but they can't stay on as long and then we can use satellites and other assets. but locating the debris field is critical right now and then backing up and trying to determine what happened. they will locate, i believe, the black box. >> and these newer aircraft have very sophisticated sensors on there so if there is an accident, apparently there's better ways to stay in touch with the black box as well as other areas of the plane that
9:06 am
goes down. >> yeah, the black box pings for 30 days. they have to locate the debris field initially. it's critical. it's time sensitive in my opinion and then if there are no survivors, which it doesn't look good at, then you go into a salvage operation and ships do that and deep sea. >> are you surprised there hasn't been a debris field surfacing at this point? >> i am but i don't know what assets they put in the area. the south vohas a small air for but the u.s. government could be immensely helpful to them. >> what do we know about the track record of this track of aircraft. >> superb, the 777 is a superb aircraft. they lost two of them.
9:07 am
one was pilot air. was an engine problem. it's got an excellent track record. >> well, we are obviously going to continue to monitor the developments and we thank you for your inputs on this because i know you're going to be watching this very closely. thank you, sir. >> thanks. >> now on the latest on the tensions that are raising the stakes between the u.s. and russia. there's reports of warning shots, of automatic weapon fire by pro-russian forces in crimea. that is to keep a foreign military mission out. amy kellogg joins us now live from kiev, ukraine with the very latest. amy. >> reporter: hi, uma. well, the international force with the organization for security and operation in europe. it was meant to be a peace
9:08 am
keeping observer force and they have not been allowed into crimea. this is a few days after one of their unarmed observers was literally chased out of crimea. he did manage to get in and was marched out of the country by russian forces. we're also getting reports now that journalists in crimea are getting beaten up and having their camera gear either broken or stolen as the tensions increase and a russian newspaper today is running some photographs of what they say is a newly planted mind field along the russia and ukraine border. and 60 or 70 military vehicles are making their way today. yesterday ukrainian border guard said that 30,000 russian troops are in crimea. last night, some of those troops tried to take over a ukrainian military base. but never fired shots. after some negotiations backed off but authorities say that all
9:09 am
ukrainian military facilities are either under their control or people have surrendered or that they are surrounded. now the ancestors were chased out of their homeland and many of whom returned to crimea are understandably rattled by all of this. they demonstrated today and we spoke to the new foreign minister today who said he still can't believe this is happening. >> that was a shock. i couldn't imagine that russian troops, russian leadership can make an order to send troops to the crimea being a friendly neighbor. >> reporter: so friendly, though, that his russian counter part, lavrov won't even take his phone calls. there's no dialogue going on at
9:10 am
that level right now. he is happy to continue dialogue with the west about all of this as long as the west, quote, doesn't try to portray russia as part of the conflict. >> well, things remain quite high. thank you very much. well, the big question folks are asking in this country, can you the u.s. do anything to influence the show down that's going on between the ukraine and russia. joining us now, colonel david hunt joining us live with his take on a tense situation at this hour. welcome, great to have you here, sir. >> hi. >> putin continues to say that russia has no intention of annexing crimea saying residents have the right to determine the region's status and possible independence by a possible vote. do you see putin pulling out all the military stops to make sure that things go his way?
9:11 am
>> yeah, crimea is important to putin. obviously for political reasons. the russians invaded crimea the week after the olympics. the other part of it is that their major naval bases, the only one in russia that doesn't freeze and other very big military installations that are important to putin. his movement into crimea is very direct and calculated and is not going to -- whether he goes into the ukraine or tries to annex ukraine is the next worry because of the economic pressure put on europe because 50% of the oil and gas that europe gets goes to the ukraine. >> so that leads one to ask the question that many folks are speculating on is that is this leading up to a new cold war? is that an overreach? >> no, i mean it is the cold war. of course, we've got russia trying -- trampled an international border with soldiers with masks and without
9:12 am
their uniforms on. without their rank. rank and insignia and have taken a part of a country that had independence. it's obviously back to the cold war and -- >> well, the u.s. >> we have to look -- >> the u.s. is sending jet fighters to the region in poland at a time when russia is waging large scale air defense drills. how do you react to these moves going on right now? it happened in georgia and now ukraine. these are guys with real guns and real consequences. you have to be careful to step in the middle of this and start something and wind up with another war on the plains of europe. for right now, i do not see us having any area in this fight.
9:13 am
the problem is this is a russian move and we need to be very, very careful moving -- oh, by the way, we got 40,000 soldiers in afghanistan. we have been at war 11 years. we have a military and we have to be very careful if we start moving military assets around in the middle of something like this. >> we also have putin threatening by cutting off fails to kiev over it's unpaid bills. why are we not seeing more of a united front against putin from the eu? >> fear. we talked about natural gas and oil that goes through ukraine into europe. european fear. just the fact that he is threatening. you'll watch the prices go up on
9:14 am
monday. it's a very serious issue and the europeans have independence in this issue. neither do we. so russia, this is very calculated what they're doing on every day ratcheting it up. there's nothing we can do, certainly not militarily and right now talk is not going to push the russians out of crimea. it's a really sobering situation and one that doesn't look good for the long-term at all. colonel, thank you very much for joining us today. we appreciate it. >> you're welcome. >> well, despite seven months of mediation lead by secretary of state john kerry, it appears there is a stalemate in the mideast peace talk with the palestinian president saying there is, quote, no way he will recognize israel as a jewish state. netanyahu is standing firm.
9:15 am
recognition he said is required as prove that the palestinians are serious about peace. president obama will be meeting with them in an effort to bring both sides closer to a deal in time for an april 29th deadline. >> well, you could call it red meet for the most conservative member of the republican party. an all star meeting that brings good news for 2016. former alaska governor sarah palin will headline the final day of the conference here in gp. paul cameron is in national harbor maryland right in the middle of it all.
9:16 am
carl. >> they are the most conservative republicans and many of them don't even call themselves republicans because they don't think that truly expresses the disease of their conservative ideology. many of them will cast their ballots today. there are trinkets, books, speeches, and break out sessions going on all week and these potential 2016 candidates. a total of nine of them have spoken over the course of the last two days out of a field of perhaps as many as 16 republicans in 2016. this has been a particularly combative confidence with all of the speakers hammering president obama aggressively which is standard but much more pronounced expressions of division in the republican party and real descent among conservatives against not only the obama agenda but the republican leadership in the house and senate. downstairs, one of the things that is a big, big popular item is the voter brick specifically made of styrofoam so you can throw it at your tv and not break it. this one is the obama brick.
9:17 am
there's another one for the nancy pelosi brick. but this is not just against democrats. there's a mitch mcconnell brick. the republican leader in the senate got a speaking engagement here and talked to the crowd and put a rifle over his head and got a good reception but there's petitions to get him tossed out and petitions to get rid of the entire republican leadership including john boehner and boehner was not invited as a bit of a snub. that's what happened to chris christie last year. he was one of the speakers that got a very warm reception here this year. rand paul lit the place up last night. earlier in the week ted cruz kicked it off and also got a very warm reception. all three of them going after the mainstream media and going after democrats and talking about the need for republicans to start winning elections and not selling out their principals. >> there's a lot going on. you're enjoying being in the middle of it all. thanks for the update. >> throwing bricks. >> throwing bricks. >> all right, carl. thank you very much. fox is your place to be for the full coverage of cpac. tonight we are going to bring you the straw poll results and shortly there after former alaskan governor and former presidential nominee sarah palin will be giving the keynote address. while we're at it, you've seen

9:23 am
welcome back, everybody. turning now to the concerns over the continuing benghazi investigation. there are still haunting questions surrounding the story and those questions are receiving new attention concerning the murder of four americans during that raid on
9:24 am
the u.s. diplomatic facility in benghazi libya in september 2012. did the obama administration deliberately down play the level of planning and execution that's now evidence in in those attacks? the latest now from chief intelligence correspondent. >> if former cia director david is asked to recall benghazi they could face hard questions. republican mike rogers, chairman of the house intelligence committee says the evidence is just a highly skilled mortar team because three of the five rounds fired in under a minute were direct hits. >> this is exceptionally good shooting. it was clearly accurate. they adjusted their fire which is a term they might use. so they went a little long and a little short and fired for effect. >> mortar crew versus specialized training to prepare the rounds for launch which includes mass calculations for distance, direction and altitude. in most cases, especially urban environments like benghazi the
9:25 am
crew can't see the target. gechb the accuracy and the fact that rounds were fired in darkness, five military officers concluded that the terrorists preset the location. >> something like this can't be done overnight. this is something that probably took weeks in preparation in order to pull it off. >> but former cia deputy director who republicans say mislead the senate intelligence committee over the administration's role in the talking points scandal told congressional investigators that the nature of the attacks suggested they didn't involve significant preplanning. when pressed on the same issue, petrius down played the skil be fired from a truck like these rockets. >> it sounds to me like he was trying to do a favor for the administration. i can't see anyway around it. he's an infantry man. he knows he can't do it. >> the father of ty woods says the first time he heard about the mortar strike was not from
9:26 am
mrs. clinton or president obama but an eyewitness. >> this individual said your son's sacrifice saved my life. if it had been a larger mortar it might not have killed him because it would have gone through the roof but a lot of people inside the building might have died. >> fox news asked him to further clarify his assessment and there was no immediate response. morrell didn't address questions about his decision making and referred fox to the cia public affairs office. >> thank you for that update. well, 94 americans are now pleading with house speaker john boehner to demand that he be recalled to testify and those members include people from the military and foreign policy experts and of course family member of the fallen heros. former cia operative and author wayne simmons is one of those that signed the letter to the speaker of the house and he is joining us now. tell us more about why all have come together to sign this letter and do you think it's going to put more pressure to get the answers that you guys are looking for? >> the answer is we hope so. we hope that the pressure that we continue to put on from the citizens commission on benghazi and along with judicial watch by delivering this very, very strong letter to speaker boehner helps motivate him to begin this house select committee on investigations. what we know, and there is a lot that we would love to share with you but i'm not at liberty to
9:27 am
yet but many of us made the pledge in the beginning over almost a year agatha we would not let benghazi disappear and we are keeping our word in that regard. and the information and the intelligence that we are developing on our own. we know that hilary clinton is the genesis of this. she is part of beacon global securities and beacon global securities is a holding tank for her own personal national security team like mike morrell, like david petrais and the former assistant deputy of state. so we have this, in our opinion, this group of liars, quite frankly because it's all been proven that they have lied and
9:28 am
we are going to get to them and boehner needs to make sure that we can subpoena these people including hilary clinton and let folks like members of congress, a bipartisan committee have a shot at these people and force them to tell us what happened. >> what makes you think that with the evidence you have you're not in liberty to go in depg at this point even though i'd love to know the insights that you gleaned from the situation and i know because of security issues you can't talk about it, that's going to force people to come forward with the answers and be truthful as you are alleging that he's not and that he's been lying, according to what you and the others are saying he's been doing. what makes you think that's going to be any difference? >> great question. the answer is the only thing that will make a difference is that they must be put underoath. there must be repercussions for the first time someone has to know if they lie they're going to prison. you can't continue to mislead
9:29 am
the people and not have repercussions. so with regards to morrell and petrais, we know from the information we have gleaned from people that have been there and people involved in everything from planning to weapons, we know that they're not telling the truth. so without the repercussions of going to jail, there will not be truth. >> any response from the speaker? >> nothing yet. but we think he's going to end up seeing it our way or otherwise he's going to get steam rolled. >> all right. wayne simmons. keep us posted. >> we will. >> thank you sir. >> always a pleasure. >> as we await the fate of news

welcome back, everybody. let's take a quick report at the stories making news in our fox news flash. a air force plane finding two

large oil slicks close to where a malaysia airlines boeing 777 went missing earlier. it's the first time that the aircraft carrying 239 people may have crashed. three americans on board that flight. four same sex couples are suing the state of indiana over the ban of gay marriage. they're seeking to overturn the
9:36 am
defense of marriage act which doesn't recognize same-sex marriages even if another state does. several gay marriage bans have been struck down. they null identified part of the antigay marriage law. and it's been a very, very long winter for most of this country as many of you know. but thankfully it's finally at our doorstep. daylight savings time begins at 2:00 a.m. sunday morning giving those of us that observe the time change an extra hour of light in the evening and that's a welcome sign that spring is just around the corner. that's a quick look at some of your stories making news in today's fox news flash. >> well, as we have been reporting that china bound malaysia airlines flight is a boeing 777 200 er. the transportation minister is denying reports that the flight crashed south of vietnam but if what is presumed is true this would mark the deadlyist incident involving boeing since it entered 19 years ago. with the ramifications for the u.s. indeed the malaysia air flight has crashed. >> absolutely. i think the implications are for united states citizens traveling through asia. officials in rome and vienna are saying they can confirm the names of two of their nationals listed on the flight that matched passports stolen in thailand. the italians say their citizen was not on the plane. the austrians are saying their citizens passports were stolen two years ago. it raises questions as to why somebody would be traveling falsely on somebody else's identity. now, no one, absolutely no one
9:37 am
at this time is saying or claiming that this could be an act of terror but i have to say the south china sea is an area of great tensions, particularly between the chinese and the philippines and this is something of real strategic concern to the united states. the authorities are working with the embassy to confirm the identity of the three u.s. citizens listed on the flight and the state department in washington issued this statement. officials from the u.s. embassies in beijing are in contact with the individuals families. the embassies are working to assess whether additional u.s. citizens may have been on board the flight. the reason they say that is the fact that some of these passengers could have dual nationality and when they actually boarded the plane they might have been traveling on a passport from another nationality that they may hold. of course details of that will be forth coming but at the moment there's just so much confusion and little clarity
9:38 am
about what exactly happened to that flight. there is a man feifest and they have a list of names but confirming that is difficult because of the people spread around the world. >> people are scrambling for the answers and we're still awaiting word on the fate of that jet liner. you'll be watching this closely. thank you for updating us. rand paul, chris christie, marco rubio all names that come to mind when people talk about 2016 and the gop contender. but what about sarah palin? up next, the former governor chimes in on whether or not she would consider making a run for the presidency in 2016. and she refuses to speak to congress but it turns out former irs official lois learnrner is talking to the justice department. we'll have the latest on the woman at the center of the conservative targeting scandal. stay with us.

welcome back everybody. well the keynote speaker tonight is former alaskan governor sarah palin. here is what she is saying about a possible run for president in 2016. >> it sounds cliche but you never say never. now at this point in time, i don't have a team of people, you know, getting out there doing these poll tests and whatever
9:43 am
they do to let you know if you should run or not. i don't have any of that kind of organization going. i'll never say never. it depends on what it is that americans really, really want in a candidate. >> never say never. and we're going to soon find out what conservative americans want in a candidate throughout the conference. attendees have been voting on a straw poll for their favorite presidential candidates. when those results come in we'll bring those to you live. but first, we asked you on twitter which candidates you favor. likely favorite among conservatives to run for president? holcomb is saying that jeb bush or marco rubio. better yet. both of them. and dennis writes rand paul and rick perry for president just among a few of the twitter responses we have been receiving here at america's news headquaters here in washington. thanks to all of you.

>> switching gears in a big way and turning now to an emotional story for the parents of young children who are coping with a medical mystery at this time. at least 25 youngsters in california have been inflicted with a polio-like illness that robs them the use of their limbs. doctors have been unable to find the cause of the illness. those that have it are not responding to medications. she is the first child to show paralysis. it's been a courageous journey at a time when so little is known as to what can be done to help these children. sophia and her mom are joining us to share more of their story. >> welcome, thank you for joining us with your daughter. >> hi, thanks for having us. >> she looks great there. she is absolutely adorable. i know this is a story that is
9:45 am
filled we motion and i can't imagine what it has been like for you as a mother to deal with this extremely baffling situation knowing that the doctors have not been able to find out what has caused this serious illness. as i understand it, this all began when sofia had trouble breathing and was rushed to the e.r. how soon did the paralysis set in? >> after we were in the hospital, we were in the hospital and she was treated for asthma for four days and we left the hospital and the next day is when we noticed that her arm was weak. and we spent the rest of the week going back to the pediatricians office trying to figure out why her arm was not working. >> now, i know that your doctor was immunized against polio like so many children in this country. and although the symptoms mimic polio, none of the children who

have been affect fwhid actued b disease. what impact has this had on your daughter and your family. >> well, as you can imagine, it's been difficult. when it first happened we wanted answers as to why it was causing this and why this is happening. we had to do a lot of the advocacy to figure out the answers and the plan for her care. and so it was. it's a stressful situation. it still is a challenge. and so now sophia is waving high. she can't hear you. >> no, i understand. that's not a problem. i certainly -- i have been -- it's been very stressful for all of you. the average age of the children affected are between the ages of 2 and 16. all have suffered paralysis on
9:47 am
one or more of their arms or legs. have you and the parents of these kids been able to find a way to give each other support during this difficult time? >> actually after we had agreed to be the face of this for our neurologist, for his presentation to be the academic neurology association and after we -- the media attention, yes, we were contacted by one other family and -- that's here in california. they are currently getting alternative treatment in india and when they return we're going to have sofia and the little boy meet. but i was able to share with the parents different physical therapy treatments, occupational therapy. so yes, there is a support. small support but it's -- you know, we're reaching out where we can. >> i know this has been a very
9:48 am
courageous fight for you and i know that the doctors and you particularly do not want to raise alarm bells or, you know, try to panic parents. you're just doing this to raise awareness to make sure that parents are on the look out for similar symptoms that might manifest in their children so that, you know, this information can be gathered and the investigation can continue to find an answer to this horrific situation. >> right. and, you know, one of the -- i guess the frustrating things when this first happen sd that we -- we had to ask for the infectious disease department to actually run tests on sophia to figure out why this was happening. so, if anything, raise awareness, i don't think parents should be concerned. this is a rare occurrence, still. there has been an uptick in the amount of kids seen in
9:49 am
california which is concerning but not extremely rare that this would happen to anyone else's child. however, we want to raise awareness that, you know, when this does happen, that there can be a quicker response and hopefully we can find out if there's any other children that this happens to, we could figure out what coug it by a quicker response from the medical community. >> and having the medical community talk about this is also helpful to try to figure out what is going on. >> no, i understand. >> i'm really grateful that you could come on our program today. i know that your daughter is obviously a little tired there but hank god she is in good spirits overall and generally healthy apart from the paralysis. please keep us posted. we wish you all the best. >> thank you. thanks for having us. >> we'll have more news next. stay with us.
