bangkok, thailand. what's the latest. >> reporter: vietnam says it spotted from the air these objects floating in the ocean. they can't confirm yet that it is debris from the plane. they are sending boats to that area. it is the same area where they found oil slicking over 24 hours ago. it is a possibility they may have found the plane now. vietnam is part of a major international search operation which has been ongoing now for 48 hours, looking for this missing malaysian airline jet. the plane may have tried to turn back to malaysia for some reason before it vanished. it went missing in the early hours of saturday morning local time from kuala lumpur to china. contact was lost two hours into the flight. at that point it should have

been flying close to the vietnamese coast. investigators are focusing on two passengers on board who were traveling on its italian and austrian passports. they were holding passports that were lost or stolen a couple years before here in thailand. their tickets were bought together and they had on ward flighting from beijing to europe. investigators are studying video to see if they can recognize them. they're also looking at five passengers who checked in but didn't board the plane, and they had to take their luggage off. that's another line of investigation. >> all right. we'll check back with you. we are learning more about the american victims. 58 year old philip wood was the only adult american on board. his ex-wife posting on a

facebook saying philip wood was a wonderful man. although we are no longer married, we are still family. our sons just want peace. the other two victims were children, ages 2 and 4. ukraine's acting prime minister is preparing to visit the united states on wednesday. all of this coming as russia appears to be beefing up its military presence in crimea, reportedly taking control of a border post and trapping dozens of board guards inside. amy kellogg streaming live from kiev with more. >> reporter: hi, greg. well, the propaganda war continues as russia amass troops. still not admitting that those troops are russian but that it has the right to defend russian speakers in yew clean and crimea against what it calls a fascist

passports. you may hear behind me, people are celebrating the birth of a poet. now i repeat the pretext for russia bringing its troops into crimea was to protect speakers there against a quote, illegal government. but in fact, the propaganda and the militarization seems to be successful now at driving people apart. there have been protests in other parts of ukraine that have not been peaceful. protests called off all together because of tensions, and this, as you mentioned, the interim prime minister yatsenyuk goes to washington. they want to bring some kind of stability and prevent the annexation of crimea before that referendum that taking place a week from sunday.

>> it may be too late already. thanks for that report. here in the united states, a fierce debate is breaking out in washington on just how to respond to the escalating crisis. president obama in the meantime working the diplomatic phones calling european leaders to try to find a peaceful solution. we're standing by in d.c. with the latest on that. >> reporter: the focus is squarely on diplomacy, including that visit that amy mentioned from yatsenyuk. it will highlight the strong support of the people of the united states for the people of ukraine and how to find a peaceful resolution to the russian military intervention in crimea. some are criticizing the administration's handling of that situation over there. >> i worry one would begin to address a crisis by the first thing we do is take options off

the table. i don't think the administration hud do that? >> have they done that? >> in a sense when he said no military. he seems to operate that way most of the time. there are military operations that don't involve putting troops on the ground in crimea. the administration thought well, if we just act nice everyone will act nice with us. that's just unfortunate, not the way putin and the rest of the russian federation sees the rest of the world. >> but they suggest all the criticism is ill-timed and miss directed. >> some of the domestic criticism of the president ought to be toned down while he's trying to handle this crisis. my own view is, after all, putin invaded georgia when george w. bush was president. nobody ever accused george w. bush of being weak or unwilling

to use military force. >> steve, thanks. well, a canadian journalist has been killed in a bomb attack in syria. he and seven others died when a plane dropped bombs in a neighborhood in aleppo. more than 63 journalists have been killed since the conflict began in 2011. thousands of people in ohio left without any heat at all in bitterly coal temperatures. the extreme cold proving much too much for an insulator that failed leaving thousands without electricity for hours. fortunately, warmer temperatures are on the way. for more on that, let's turn to meteorologist janice dean. >> i've got good news and bad news. we've got a quick warmup across the central u.s. look at some of these

temperatures, especially monday for minneapolis. dallas texas, 80 degrees and even bismarck getting into the 50s. we have a setup across the west. a pipeline of moisture moving into the west. cold air coming in from canada and the northwest storm and moisture from the gulf of mexico is going to give us a setup for a storm midweek across the central u.s., towards the ohio river valley and into the northeast. there's your future radar. we'll watch this system and this one combined. this is tuesday. as we get into wednesday and thursday, we could be dealing with a pretty major storm system across i-59 corridor. taking a look at our latest computer models, here's our storm right off the coast. we'll see interior sections all snow. a mixing along the coast. and then as this storm exits, all snow. this is one of the computer

a skydiver colliding with a small plane while parachuting to the ground miraculously survives. investigators say the pilot was practicing landing at a florida

airport when suddenly the skydiver literally fell onto the plane. the pilot is 87 years old, being held for observation. the faa is investigating. a frightening scene as a stage holding more than 200 people collapses. the incident occurring during a musical event at a high school in anaheim, california. as many as 40 people were injured. witnesses say there was complete chaos. >> everyone's like jumping around like crazy. and all of a sudden the very front row fell under. we all were in shock and we realized what happened. >> and police say there were some broken bones, bruises and scrapes, but none of the injuries are life threatening. some new concerns about the future of el salvador and its relationship with the united states. today's presidential election there said to be an easy win for the current ruling party, but

oh, yeah, he's back in the news. toronto's notorious crack-smoking mayor can't seem to catch a break these days. rob ford trying to turn back the hands of time, tweeting last night, daylight saving time starts this evening. turn your clocks back. well, mr. ford eventually realizing the error of his ways with some help of wise-cracking twitter respondents he deleted his original post and told folks to spring forward an hour. maybe he wants to turn back time, like a year or two. kentucky senator rand paul is talking tough about the situation in ukraine. here is the warning he offers to the russian president, vladimir putin today on fox news sunday. >> putin needs to be warned and i'm perfectly willing to tell him that if he does occupy
