have a great week, and we'll see you next fox news sunday. presen. fox urgent. rescue crews are searching on land for a boeing 777 that went missing over the south china sea. the malaysia airways flight suddenly vanished seven miles in the air, and tonight, brand new video and international coalition of at least 22 aircrafts, 40 ships now actively scouring an enormous search area. vietnamese officials just a few hours ago sent ships to get a closer look at debris near a large amount of oil they suspect could be part of the aircraft missing. crews also are searching the ground along the coastline for any sign of that plane that went
4:01 pm
missing 48 hours ago now. it had reached 37,000 feet about two hours into the flight from koala lam pure. it was on it way to beijing, china. crews lost contact with the plane. 239 people onboard, including three american citizens we know at this point. two of them children, just 4 and 2 years old. but the word of a u-turn has been making headlines. malaysian officials say the jet may have turned around just minutes before it vanished. >> normally, there is if the pilot is unable to proceed as per plan, and normally, then he makes that decision to turn back, he will report. to the base or report to the att.
4:02 pm
from what we know, from the recording as well as our own recording to message the base, there was no such distress signal or distress call for safety. so we are equally puzzled. >> so you're hearing there from a news conference that happened just a few hours ago. you heard the questions about why the plane would have turned around. also questions about stolen passports used to board the flight and four people looked at closely on airport surveillance video, hoping to maybe give videos on who exactly got on the plane. david piper is streaming live, as he has been all weekend long, from bangkok, thailand. the sun is starting to come up. what is the latest when they get daybreak? >> well, this international search has now been going on for two days. vietnam is now saying that their air groups have seen a rectangular object in the sea
4:03 pm
off their coast, and they're sending two ships to investigate it. they think it may be a door from the plane. but they can't confirm anything as such. with dawn breaking soon, those ships will be able to perhaps find the plane door, harris. >> david, any word why malaysia has decided to extend the search area? i understand now they're looking at labd, and this thing they think went missing over sea. >> well, as you said in your start of your report, they are suggesting that the plane may have been trying to turn around. if it was turning around, it was in northern malaysia along the coast, which is on the east coast. and if it did fly, it wasn't 35,000 feet, and it came a long way, and if it has gone even further, peninsula malaysia is not very wide. the west coast, on the indian ocean side, they're using helicopters in the area to search the coastline just in
4:04 pm
case the plane has gone to ground there, harris. >> you know, david, i don't know what you're hearing in that region, but we're seeing on the associated press wires, people are complaining and broken hearted at the airport there, wondering when the company officials with this airline are going to come out and speak with some of those grieving loved ones. any word on that? >> well, there does seem to be a lot of anger and anguish about how the airline is operating. they're in a difficult situation because they only have so many fact. they're offering flights to malaysia perhaps for u.s. citizens to come over, but i don't think they have had any experience of dealing with something, a situation as large as this, and they're learning on the ground, and i understand they are sending people to beijing where there is anger from the families who feel like
4:05 pm
they haven't been heard or heard any information. it's difficult to give out information they don't have. >> sometimes what people are looking for is someone to hold your hand and say we care. we'll have to see what happens. david piper reporting live from thailand. >> the family of an american man listing on the manifest of the plane speaking out. philip wood works for ibm and had transferred to a facility in malaysia. his family said he was flying to beijing to tie up loose ends from the move. his brothers said he's a man of faith and truly loves his life. >> in one of hie-mails recently, he said every day is a gift. that's how he lived, he approached it where it appreciated life. he became very laid back and -- viewed each day as its own day. >> and you will hear more from the family and fox top story at
4:06 pm
the bottom of the hour. for now, interpol is investigating two additional passports used to board that missing flight in addition to the two that were reported stolen in the past couple years. the global police agency says a review of the passenger list turned up more passports that were, quote, suspect, but they're not going into detail on that. earlier on fox news, peter king, who sits on the house homeland security committee, talked about how they possibly managed to get past security and onto that plane. >> what happens is when a pass sprt stolen, as you reported to interpol and that passport is tagged. there's no way you should be able to get 92 any airport at all using a stolen passport. so we don't know whether it was not properly reported or whether or not it was not checked at the airport, but again, in koauala
4:07 pm
lump lumpur, they don't have the same standards we have in the united states. >> so far, no indication it's linked to the stolen passports, but they're using security footage to try to see who exactly got on the team. the ntsb has announced they're on the way to the south china sea to help in the search. they'll join a u.s. navy war ship which we told you about on fox news last night. it has now already reached the area. as well as a u.s. surveillance plane and search teams from several other nations. but as large as this effort is, the area they cover, or are trying to cover, is massive. in situations involving open ocean, it can take days or weeks to find wreckage, not to mention finding key parts of the aircraft, including the data recorder. joining me is dr. vernon gross, a former ntsb member in the
4:08 pm
reagan administration. good to have you tonight. thank you for joining us. >> you're welcome. >> i want to start today with anything you see as progress in what we're hearing. possibly a door being found. >> well, if a door is found, the airplane, is sounds like it's disint grated. we have assumptions to reach. first, the altitute was 37,000 feet. how far did it progress over water, over land, back over water, the south china sea. we really don't know where the aircraft might have come down. however, if we think about desintgration for a minute, they talked earlier about two oil slicks in the water. that would not be likely in my opinion because the fuel aboard the aircraft is in the wings. if the wings came off, they could have separated sufficiently to have two oil slicks, but on the other hand,
4:09 pm
recorders are the only thing that are going to give us anything of evidence. >> interesting. i tweeted out a little earlier on twitter that you e-mailed me and said you didn't think the oil slicks were tied to the plane. in fact, that's where the potential door part has been found. what else could it be? >> i don't know what would be in that part -- they're probably talking about the south china sea on the north side of vietnam, i imagine. but if it came down over land, which it might have, the jungles in that part of vietnam would make the wreckage hard to discover. so at this point, we only speculated, and we don't like to do that, as investigation, but on the other hand f you think about this way, no one has claimed terrorism attack yet. that will be interesting if somebody does. but until then, there was no mayday from the aircraft itself, if the aircraft now is thought
4:10 pm
to have turned around, why would the pilot not communicate that he was turning the aircraft around? >> yeah. you know, before i let you go, i want to get your opinion on just the redundancy of systems aboard that type of plane, boeing 777 we have had guests tell us about. that has to do with is there any sort of beacon on the plane? even if it's broken apart, the parts that are in tect, do they have a beacon? can they find it without a distress signal? >> they have a beacon they interrogate with radar, but i don't know what kind of radar coverage they had here. here's about the recorders i would like to mention. there's two recorders, a cockpit voice recorder and a data recorder, and those two recorders are separate, but they're basically in the tail of the aircraft. they could come down fairly in
4:11 pm
the same area, but they have retainers on them. people haven't talked about it. if they're submirjed in water, they will ping. in the case of the flight two years ago, in 2009, actually, those things were still pinging after two years in the water. >> wow. >> so there's hope if they come in proximity, but they would have to be submerged to hear the pinging. >> you have to get in the water. and you kind of have to have an idea, otherwise, you're swimming in water for weeks, potentially. have you ever seen a scene like this where you have to go out and look for something and you don't know what you're looking for. you have been to a lot of scenes. >> 30 years i have been doing this, and i have never seen anything like this. this is mysterious to me. >> dr. verner gross, we appreciate your expertise and time. we'll move on to another big story breaking tonight. ukraine's prime minister with an

4:46 pm
we asked you at home where democrats are most vulnerable? on twitter right now, democrats are most vulnerable on the irs people targeting and nsa spying. very good. and we've got the fox news political insiders back. john, pat, and doug. pat, i'll start with you, where? >> three big things. one of the biggest one being obamacare. i think the second is, you know, probably the economy.
4:47 pm
the fact that it's not working for a lot of people. and by the way, no one in either party is talking it about that. and the third is this creeping -- this growing issue of the rule of government, overreach of government. that's what part of the irs is, part of benghazi. a sense they're going too far. i think that's partly the weakness, but right now, the biggest think is obamacare. >> independentz 2 writes, the weakness on health care. >> to be fair, we have to acknowledge the democrats' greatest advantage, bluntly, is the republicans. the division we saw at cpac is the only reason why obama and democrats have a chance of holding the senate, which is not withstanding the issues of vulnerability which are very real. the republicans poll about 20% and it's tough to win an election like that. >> could we put numbers on the screen and john, talk about this. this looks like a talking point
4:48 pm
for somebody, even if it's just a random person at the grocery store, if she or he happens to run into the president, why so many, mr. president? >> it's prove obamacare isn't doing well. the white house never admits sign-up numbers are bad, they don't talk about it. when they keep changing things every week, it's proof they know. >> or just delaying the implementation for political reasons. >> i want to get back to one thing doug said, to echo it on the best thing democrats have is the republicans and their behavior and to bring up quickly darrell issa's performance after last week on the show, we mentioned how he had blown it last sunday about lois lerner is going to testify, turns out she didn't testify. his behavior that day as a chairman of a standing committee in the house was a disaster politically. >> he has apologized.
4:49 pm
>> not enough. he cannot behave that way. >> promise that is what washington is about. you had harry reid get up in the senate and say anybody saying there's something wrong with obamacare is making it up. you have issa acting this way. these people keep acting in a way that drives most americans away. >> an even more fundamental issue. the democrats have what i think is an inadequate agenda, which is redistribution. the republicans have no agenda rather than opposing obama. >> here's the thing, this thing of, as i said in my speech yesterday, of let's not discuss any issues. let's go underground. we don't say anything and surunder everything, we'll win. >> back to twitter, we have asked people. dems are most vulnerable by making open threats and not holding up to them, like what the president did with russia. it's interesting the pundits have said even ronald reagan can't quinn right now.
4:50 pm
we'll talk more about that. you have ten seconds. >> weakness, that's a big problem for obama. he has become a weak president. >> more of the conversation with the political insiders next. i get to talk with them during the commercial. >> and we'll include your tweet and facebook comments. it's sunday. inuses are acting up and i've got this runny nose. i better take something. truth is, sudafed pe pressure and pain won't treat all of your symptoms. really? alka seltzer plus severe sinus fights your tough sinus symptoms plus your runny nose. oh what a relief it is

and the most hours of streaming video on the nbc sports live extra app, including the x1 platform from xfinity. comcast was honored to bring every minute of every medal of nbcuniversal's coverage to every screen. so what's next? rio 2016. welcome to what's next. comcast nbcuniversal. we're back with the fox news political insiders. rights now, when will we ever talk about replacing the irs? conservatives can win on flat tax, national sales tax? >> when steve forbes tried running on that, it was very
4:54 pm
popular at first, and the more the public looked at it, it became unpopular. it can be done, but it's got to be slightly different. >> they came out with a tax reform plan that moved in that direction last week. the silence from john boehner and mitch mcconnell was deafening. >> i would keep waiting for someone to propose the flat tax on the basis of if you do it, you will unemploy half of the lobbyists in washington. that's the greatest argue because they're rigging the system. >> let's talk about obamacare. a fox news poll that has scary, angry, and optimistic. >> and pessimistic. >> that's the biggest one. here the question, people were asked, how do you feel about the health care law? 49% said pessimistic. this was any party included. they did break it down by party, and about a quarter of democrats who took the survey said they were pessimistic. when you look at this, the
4:55 pm
breakdown here, only 21% say they're excited. doug? >> this is the crisis that the country and i dare say the democratic party, is facing. to use my favorite expression, bottom line, this could cost the democrats control of the senate. the anger and fear that exists. >> that's why the republicans won't put out a positive agenda on any issue, including this tack reform thing. they don't want to have anything get in the way of this. >> but they're not even speaking to this in any sense of saying how to make it better, which i think is a problem. it couldby a problem. with these attitudes, pessimistic, scared, angry, this is not the kind of language -- we have a system that will not address what is an obvious reason. democrats won't do it for political reasons. but the truth of the matter, this is a disaster and no one will get rid of it. >> you talk about it. >> they have delayed it for two
4:56 pm
years now. it turns out you can keep your health care for two more years because they had to change it to make it happen. >> if it still exists. >> doctors are bugging out of the system. hospitals aren't taking it. >> a trend on twitter. why do we care how president obama is doing at this point? he's not running again. >> we're all americans, harris. we all care about this country. we all want to succeed. if the republicans were able to offer an inclusive message, then they would be much stronger. the democrats haven't. that's the crisis facing the country. >> you look at the decline. >> 38% for the president. >> part of this is ukraine, weakness. this is a president who is -- people should be scared. the weakness and being displayed overseas and what is going to be challenged on us, and the proposal we have an army less than it was in 1940, and the navy, 1914. people are worried. >> i also think politically why we focus on the president is
4:57 pm
he's the leader of the democrats, and how he goes is -- for political purposes, they'll lose the senate if he's weak. >> i have six seconds to say thank you, everybody. thanks for watching. is the i. see the special psyllium fiber in metamucil actually gels. and that gelling help to lower some chesterol. metamucil. azing benefits in 1 super fiber. can go 795 highway miles on a single tank. huh... so you could drive from los angeles all the way philadelphia with just three stops for fuel. that's just a hop, skip, and a jump. try that in another midsize sedan. it's more of a hop... a skip... a jump... a leap... maybe a schlep...
