the malaysia flight vanished. now officials from malaysia say it looks more and more to them like this was a hijacking or sabotage. fox news confirmed that the plane kept beaming information to its satellites even after its dropped off the radar screen, and for a long time. officials say that suggests the plane did not vanish in some sort of accident or malfunction or catastrophic event. it says, instead, that somebody could have taken control of that jet, for reasons that still are not clear. those signals suggest the plane could have kept flying for many hours, long enough to reach land. aviation experts now tell us even a huge jet like the boeing 777 can avoid showing up on radar if it flies low enough. they say this jet would have needed only bat mile of flat surface to lan. you need a shorter landing space than takeoff space because of the weight of the plane.

here's how the plane could have gone with the fuel it had onboard. here's the map. an area covering more than 20 million square miles. that's equal to the total land of the united states, europe, and south america and major parts of africa. enormous. the white house says the search is now shifting to one place, the indian ocean, and that president obama is very closely watching this situation. >> he is fully aware of it and has been briefed and knows where things stand, and he, too, is very concerned about the suffering of the families in a situation like this, and very concerned about the whereabouts of the plane. >> what we still do not know is whether the plane landed or whether it eventually ran out of fuel and crashed. somewhere. it's a devastating lack of answers for the families of the 239 people onboard who today got even more troubling news. airline officials told those families the jet carried emergency food and water to last

seven days. so now that time is up. catherine herridge is live in washington. where are we? >> sources telling fox news that the flight sent, quote, periodic pushes of data after the transponder went dark and these signals came in a number of time in attempts to link up with satellites. this is described to fox news as signals data that would not provide a specific location for the missing jet. to that end fox news told us the data is being analyzed along with military radar tracking that shows an unidentified flight consistent with 370 making the turn, suggesting a deliberate act. a short time ago the state department reported the u.s. is engaged. >> pretty unprecedented

with the investigation as like a cell phone searching for the tower but not sending the actual call data. as you mentioned it there was catastrophic event, sewned investigators say they would expect all of these data streams to go dark pretty simultaneously, which did not apparently happen in the case of 370. one of the nation's most respected aviation analysts urged caution today about reaching any conclusions. >> everybody is saying it was turn off. we don't know that. all we know is it stopped, had a catastrophic mechanical failure or rapid decompression which is what i think. >> investigators say if the flight went down in the water, it becomes increasingly unlikely you'll find any of the wreckage continue to float after seven days. >> let's get to a former deputy director with the transportation stewart administration. thank you. you said you believe this in

your mine points to a cockpit breach. >> absolutely. this looks like a cockpit breach, and the foundation of if aways security post-nine is to protect the cockpit, and its integrity all the time. some of the things that happened here would suggest that either the pilots were complicit or people with knowledge of avionics and pilot procedure got into that cockpit. >> and knew exactly what they were doing for hours to come. >> and knew what they were doing. this is not like a manual from the glove compartment of your car. if you know how to work a transresponder, work these other systems in different parts you have had training, you have been taken to school on this. >> so if that is the premise, you have to figure out who this might have been. there are 239 people. how do you start? >> there are actually more than 239 options. you have to begin with people that worked at malaysian

airlines and their potential connections. you have too look at people on the ground, the fuelers, baggage handlers, the people that clean and prepare the airplane, the caterers and look at their backgrounds and potential associations. look at the 239 passengers, look at that manifest. you have to get with the u.s. and other western agencies and begin to have access to some of their lists to see whether there are any potential threats you can develop. >> i'd want to know more than who what in the cabin, what was underneath? what was the cargo in which someone might have great interest? >> absolutely. the cargo is a big part of commercial airline operations. it's manifested. they should be able to find out who put that on there, who checked it. they should be able to see who those shippers were, check the background, and make sure whether or not what was being shipped was in fact what was tendered to the air carrier for

carriage. >> you think it's possible somebody could jack this jet, fly it for hours and get it to lang strip for use later? >> i don't think you can dismiss it at this point. seems far. fetched but seems far fetched the aircraft could have disintegrated in mid-air and that all the satellite coverage of the earth that we have these days, some flash of light, some system isn't going to pick that up. that seems almost equally as fantastic to me. >> tom blank, live with us. thank you so much. >> nice to see you. >> consider this. we'll get into this with lea gabrielle. consider this. it is widely believed now this plane may have taken a course that would help it avoid known ground radar. in other words, not just made a turn but made a turn and then a series of turns to get to a location. and there is talk of a general

>> investigators are looking into what may have caused the nose gear of a us airways flight to collapse at takeoff yesterday in philadelphia. one passenger's camera caught it all. look here. >> i'm off the plane. we evacuated the plane. oh, my god. oh, my god. that plane is on fire. oh, my gosh. >> people say a u.s. airways flight was on its way to ft. lauderdale when a tire on the front landing gear blew out and forced the pilot to board

the takeoff as the jet skid off the runway. passengers got off on emergency slides. 154 people were on there and thankfully nobody got hurt. we're live in the newsroom. >> we're so lucky there weren't more injuries. i can't tell you more because the ntsb takes time with these investigations but they're monitoring it. for those passengers, you have to wonder how different the outcome might have been if it all happened on left-hand sid sid- -- landing instead of takeoff. >> 400-yard airplane from -- away from the airplane and we used our vehicles to surround the group, safely corral the passengers to protect them from the wind. >> getting away from the aircraft quickly was key because there was fire growing on and they were aided by a grew of

belgian firefighters aboard the plane. passengers smelled smoke and burning tires as the flight crew yelled, evacuate. >> that's crazy. get the thing off the runway, that jet? >> they did finally. they're going to take closer look at it and study it and figure out what happened. some passengers did board another flight late last night and arrived in ft. lauderdale at 2:00 a.m., and others were so shaken by the incident they overnighted instead in philly. here's how one eye witness, who watched the whole thing unfold, describes it. >> the plane crashing. we looked out the window, the nose of the plane was up. there were sparks coming -- sparks or fire. don't know. so tried to look as much as we could. the plane seemed to veer off on to the grass. the guy next to me thought it had rolled over, and then it carried on, big clouds of smoke.

>> the pilot handled things well, and it could take time for the ntsb to figure out why he had to abort the takeoff. amid all the reports of plane incidents and the still missing malaysian flight, if it's okay with you, i'm not flying anywhere for a while. >> spring is coming. give it time. prosecutors in the oscar pistorius murder trial showed more of the crime scene video today. including pictures of the blade runner himself. police asome of the photos show pistorius in his gramm garage with -- garage with traces of blood on him shortly after he shot and killed his model girlfriend. the prosecutors dropped the claim he wore his prosthetic legs. it was key part of their argument he planned the murder. pistorius says he was not wearing those prosthetics at the time of the killing but put them on after he realized what happened and says he thought his

girlfriend was an intruder. prosecutor says the blade runner murdered reeva steenkamp last year after an argument and a loud one. the defense lawyer has strongly criticized the police investigation. he previously said an officer left a footprint on the door to the bathroom where the girlfriend died. today a former police colonel says somebody stole two of the sprinter's valuable watches from the crime scene and a firearms expert handled the gun without wearing gloves. >> sharp words from secretary of state john kerry after he discussed the cries in ukraine with the russian foreign minister. when i say discussed, they went on for a long time. tensions turn deadly along russia's bother if -- border with ukraine and analysts say putin could use that excuse to send his troops further into the country. the invasion of ukraine possible? that's next on "shepard smith reporting" as we monitor further

-- . >> the russian foreign minister says moscow has to plan to invade eastern ukraine. even though russian officials say they have sent 10,000 troops to areas near the border. ukrainian officials say it's more like tens of thousands. last night pro russian and pro ukrainian demonstrators got into a street fight that turned deadly in a ukrainian city along the border. somebody stabbed to death a proukrainian protester and nearly 30 people were hurt. journalist say it started -- began with this. this is a mockup of the ukrainian flag here. see all these eggs on the ground down here? started when pro russian demonstrators threw the eggs and say the pro russian demonstrators broke through a group of police to attack the protesters here. and you can see it went down roughly. some protesters took coverage in

a bus during and after the street fight. and look at this. this guy is bloody on the ground. you can see the police helping the pro ukrainian protester who is apparentsly bleeding from his head. then there's this one near the end. you can see another pro-ukrainian demonstrate you're on the ground with blood coming out of his stomach. it was a bloody scene. russian officials said the fight shows ukraine's government has lost control and they reserve the right to intervene there to defend ethnic russians. witnesses at the scene say pro-russian crowds started the whole thing. lavrov and kerry met for six hours? what do you do in a six-hour meeting? >> what do you do? one that u.s. state department officials acknowledge they found no common ground in that six-hour meeting. also, the u.s. state department official saying that lavrov and

kerry had issues because lavrov wasn't empowered by vladimir putin to discuss the next step in crimea. everyone is waiting for the referendum that the united states contends is illegal and unconstitutional. at the white house. president obama met with the irish prime minister, made comments about ukraine and russia and delivered a familiar message to russia. >> continue to hope that there's a diplomatic solution to be found, but the united states and europe stand united, not only in its message about ukraineian sovereign cut but there will be consequences if the sovereignty is violated. >> no word on how for a the u.s. and europe would go. >> you wonder about the consequences. let's bring in chris wallace. you there's so many ties here.

the germans have energy ties, and so much banking done in london that knee ore -- neither of those seem overly willing to get tough on sanctions. >> the biggs development in the last 4 hours was that yesterday the german chancellor, angela merkel who has been very weary of steep -- stepping up and getting involved in economic sanctions against russia, has apparently had enough, with the massing of troops on the border, the crimean referendum, and a vote only, and kind of in quotations, and talking about the -- an end to sovereignty and erasing borders. she is talking tough about sanctions, and my guess is if they go ahead and -- there's every reason to believe they will with the referendum -- >> are you'll start to see the u.s. and in the european union and germany, which is the leader in europe, invoking tough economic sanctions against russia.

or whether it's someone who got control of the cockpit from outside. that creates a whole new level of threat and if it could happen to that airliner, could it happen to another airliner, and if this airliner is still out there -- it sounds preposterous but some people suggest perhaps it labbed, being outfitted with ammunition, with explosives. it does create just a whole new level of threat and until they're able to put to rest the rest the mystery of flight 370. it's a concern. >> we'll -- chris will talk about the crisis in ukraine with new jersey democrat bob menendez, and the tennessee senator bob corker. chris wallace will have the latest on the missing malaysian flight with michael mccall, and peter gold, former managing director of the ntsb. this sunday on fox news sunday.

way points. more on those and their importance in a moment. first, take a look at the wall. we showed you the potential places the plane could have gone. now the reuters news agency reporting investigators say an aircraft believed to be the missing jet was following a route in one direction, headed right there. based on that they say the plane could have ended up around these indian islands in the waters where crews are searching. these are not the bahamas. experts on the area tell us there are hundreds of mostly empty islands with dense forests. researchers say the people who live there are members of ancient tribes that date back to the stone age. cut off from the modern world and do not take kindly to outers in 2006, tribe members reportedly killed two fishermen then fired arrows to drive off the helicopters the indian government sent too retrieve the

was showing us but the military says this is what they believe may have happened. >> it is interesting, shepard, and i want to let everybody know this is all conjecture. this is a very unusual circumstance, and police continue to book your travel plans for the summer. don't let this stop you from flying. i like what you're talking about as far as putting random way points within the flight computer, and if enough research was done ahead of time, they could have those already listed if they know what they're doing and go ahead and put the long coordinates in the flight computer and navigate towards that destination. >> can you envision a world where something like this could actually have happened, somebody could steal a plane out of the air and take it somewhere without getting seen? >> shep, i didn't imagine 9/11 happening either but i saw i right before my eyes. i'm not leaving anything out. i also think it could be also ditched out in the middle of the

indian ocean. they're still searching out there for it. could have been an intentional ditching could have been a fight, a conflict within there, could have been ditched. i'm just praying when they get out there, we find a whole bunch of life rafts and everybody floating there safe and sound. i just pray for that every day. >> that would be amazing. one thing that made all this more difficult is malaysia don't have the coordination that a united states or europe would have. they don't have a p.r. swing and a communications division that was going to speak to the people. and it's been difficult. >> and i do believe they dragged their feet. they had a nonconfront with whatever evidence was initially presented to them in order to save face. it's part of the culture. and unfortunately, now lives are at stake and the longer they drag their feet, the more in jeopardy the plane and the people are. >> you have said had there been a fire or a catastrophic event that made this thing explode, you believe we would have found

it. you don't think too much of this route this military has laid it for us. what's left? >> well, what's left is either a ditching or it did break apart. maybe there was a fire and it continued flying. maybe it continued flying long enough an auto pilot and the smoke overcame the pilots, they continued flying out there in the indian ocean and that's where it ditched. until they get a good understanding of what is out there as far as any debris that could possibly still be floating, a lot of things are still on the table, and once again, until the investigators fully understand what is available to them, it is all cop jeck tour at this -- conjecture at this point. >> d.j. frost, very nice to see you. thank you. >> anytime, shep. >> at least eight people are now confirmed dead after this week's building explosion and collapse here in new york city. up next we'll talk to a legal expert about who may be to blame here and what other lawsuit

all bad out of new york system eight people now dead and more than 70 others hurt after that explosion that demolished not one but two five-story buildings on the way up east side in manhattan and east harlem. now police believe nobody else is missing amid the pile of broken bricks and twisted metal. happened wednesday morning around 9:30. 11 street and park avenue. investigators say a gas leak triggered the explosion inside one of the two five-story building. that blast leveled that builting and the one next door. search teams overnight brought in a bulldozer and used sound equipment and cameras to check for anymore signs of life and now the question of who is at fault and what lawsuits may come out of this. looks like a lot of possibilities. >> this is terrible.

your heart goes out to the people who lost their lives. the question becomes who is at fault to blame. we don't know. so many questions have to be answered. what ons ought is negligence. who was negligent. who really is culpable. let's talk about it. products liability case. infrastructure, products defective. could be an issue. number two, the building owner, maybe they had in liability. or more importantly, con ed, the utility companies. what did they do before the blast and as soon as the neighbor called at 9:13, dispatch, and then what actually happened thereafter. there are serious safety protores -- procedures have to be impleted. >> sounds like this leak hat been going on. a neighbor said he smelled the

gas the day before, and a preacher from the church said the same thing but nobody reported it. >> which is a real problem. did -- con ed know there was a leak that could have been corrected? they have to make sure their -- did they do their due diligence or not? how disthis happened? nobody called not 17 minutes or 18 minutes before the explosion. something doesn't add up. when the neighbor called at 9:13, apparently when they reported it, con ed said it one an emergency. so that investigation will have to continue. >> the may have nothing to do with it but i'm sure you read in the newspaper, last weekend, before this happened, that our cities' infrastructure is so incredibly old, most of the gas lines more than 50 years old, water mains, more than 100 years

>> just in to fox news moments ago. the u.s. -- geological survey release statement on the tremor. they didn't say we think this might be the plane but put it out there. we have this statement which reads: the magnitude 2.7 earthquake is a normally occurring event consistent with tectonic activity and we do mott believe it to be related to the malaysian airlines crash. in other words, just an earthquake, quite common in that region. the jet went missing a week ago today. the u.s. has sent some of the world's foremost experts on crashes, they're taking a back seat in the investigation. the white house now says malaysia has taken the lead in the search, so those american experts are just there technically to assist the
