tv Housecall FOX News March 16, 2014 7:30am-8:01am PDT
7:30 am
it's time now for sunday house call. i'm jamie colby. >> welcome as always. joining us is dr. david samadi, chairman and professor and chief of robotic surgery. >> and dr. marc siegel at ny medical center and author of unlocking the secret code of sickness and health. it's great to see both of you. >> good to see you. >> i want to start with a women's health question. often these diseases are referred to as women's diseases but doctors say elements like
7:31 am
osteoporosis and breast cancer you may know already can affect both sexes. dr. samadi, tell us about the most system things women have to think about that men should keep in mind as well. >> we have about seven diagnosis we want to talk about but the reason i thought this topic was so interesting is that men don't like to see doctors. if it wasn't because of women bringing men to the office and saying go get screened, we would never see doctors. that's why these seven diagnoses always come with the women's diagnosis, not men. 25% less visits to doctors for men, 40% less visits for screenings and men die about two times more from heart disease and cancer than women and for whatever reason, women outlive men by five years. it's not the women killing us. it's just we don't go for screening. osteoporosis for example is one of them. when you think about that you think about women. the fact that estrogen drops
7:32 am
after menopause and the bone density. >> why do men lose bone if they don't have estrogen? >> because of the wear and tear. by the time you get to age 65 your bone density starts to shrink. take your vitamin d 3, make sure you exercise. we talked about the reserve of your calcium early on that will last you so that's one of the things -- >> full disclosure. i got the cheat sheet. thank you to both of you for preparing so many notes. the one i find interesting on here if i can bring it up because i think it's a big issue is eating disorders. people think of it associated with women. you have it on your list of men as well. >> we've spoken about it. always you think anorexia and bulimia is about women but ten percent of men also go through this. if it's not diagnosed early on it leads to alcohol abuse and suicide. >> do we want to stuff our face and eat more?
7:33 am
>> eating disorders are not always about anorexia. sometimes you go the other way and it can present itself as obesity. we want to make sure any out of normal behavior among men should be checked by doctors. breast cancer, have you ever heard of that with men? it's rare. one percent get breast cancer but when it happens, extremely dangerous, extremely aggressive. any lumps or bumps that you feel, please see your doctor and check it and didn't deny it. >> i'm glad you brought that up, because dr. siegel, are you doing breast exams? you're probably not? >> i'm lfistening to the chest, absolutely. a couple points i want to emphasize. on bone density, it's a loss of testosterone over time that leads men to have a problem with bones. it's not just estrogen that protects bones but testosterone. eating disorders, it's very
7:34 am
important because now with the celebrity culture even men are saying i want to look like that, i want to be thin. >> thin is in. >> exactly. depression is another huge one. here's the thing about depression, eric, that you'll find very interesting. with women, women may be -- and i don't want to be attacked by the pc police here. >> i'll jump in if necessary. >> we may know when women are sad or depressed. men may express it in anger, they may express it with alcohol or drug use. did you know when men are suicidal they're more likely to commit suicide than women because they may not be tracking their emotions. i think depression in men is undiagnosed. >> what would you suggest we do? >> let it out, talk about your feelings more. david's point about men not going to doctors is part of that. >> stop the sigma of men feeling
7:35 am
depression so they're willing to get help. that's a great point. >> back to thyroid disease, i check everyone or thyroid disease. 80% of people with thyroid disease out there are women, but we're talking 40 million people, so that means 20% of them, several million are men. what are the symptoms? you want to know what i'm looking out for. constipation, fatigue, weight gain, hair thinning out. this is not, guys, because of thyroid disease. for a lot of men as with women, hair thinning out. with women it's around pregnancy, postpartum. with men a lot of the same diseases. >> we want you to make sure that you go and get checked, and your doctor is responsible to pay attention to all of this. when a man comes in with a very aggressive brownish black mass around the breast, that has to be checked. they should get a mammogram, a
7:36 am
biopsy and make sure they get treated. finally, bladder infection is not just in women but men also get bladder infections and we will probably talk later on in the segment but men also have urinary issues even though anatomically we're different. that's another one that needs to be checked. >> this is great. i'm so glad you're encouraging men to take care of their health as well. thanks to both of you. did you ever want to know what really is causing your headache? the answer could be, they say, in your refrigerator. is it the food we eat? >> i'm going to build this up. the headline is this is one time when i completely agree with david that supplements are the answer rather than food. i like the supplements for migraines. now, what is a migraine. latest research says a migraine is sensitivity of the nerves in your face triggering blood vessel changes where they dilate in your brain. hormones are involved so that's why women get migraines more than men.
7:37 am
around menstrual cycles women are more prone. but men get migraines, too. if you want to prevent a migraine, studies have shown that coenzyme q10 cuts down your risk of migraines. it energizes the brain cells. >> if you are taking lipitor or something they say you take that, too. >> that's controversial. this is not. magnesium, 600 milligrams have been shown in a single dose in a study in germany to cut down on migraines by 50%. here's the question, can you take it as a pill or can you find it in spinach and mushrooms? the answer is you can probably do both. people out there should have plenty of spinach, fresh vegetables, sweet potatoes. rye bow flaifen has been shown
7:38 am
to cut down on migraines. again, you can get that in milk, eggs, spinach and broccoli, but also you can get it in a pill. >> david, my migraine cure, coffee, tea, coca-cola, milk and a banana. >> chocolate. it works, trust me. >> the list that you made is absolutely correct and every migraine patient knows which food is going to give them a headache and which is not. chocolate because of the ca caffeine is going to hurt you. wine, whiskey is going to irritate the nerves around the brain and cause the migraine. so you stay away from that. but the list that mark mentioned and i posted on the facebook, riboflaven is effective. there's also called fever few which is an herb that you can take 100 milligrams to 500
7:39 am
milligrams. don't memorize this. we're going to post them on facebook so you can relax. all of these supplements work really well. it's better to get them from food. bananas is a problem, aged cheese, these can cause migraines. stay away from them and stick with the food. >> close your eyes and lie down and hopefully it will go away. >> i just started taking co-q10 and i don't get migraines anymore. 24 approved drugs will help treat mall sexual dysfunction. for women that number is zero. coming up we're going to look at why that is and why some doctors say it's become harder to treat women for this type of issue than men. we're going to get to the bottom of that one. you make a great t.
7:40 am
it's been that way sincthe day you met. but your erectile dysfunction - it could be a question of blood flow. cialis tadalafil for daily use helps you be ready anytime the moment's right. you can be more confident in your ability to be ready. and the same cialis is the only daily ed tablet approved to treat ed and symptoms of bph like needing to go frequently or urgently. tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and medications, and ask if your heart is healthy enough for sexual activity. do not take alis if you take nitrates for chest pain, as this may causan unsafe drop in blood pressure. do not drink alcohol in excess with cialis. side effects may include headache, upset stomach, delayed backache or muscle ache. to avoid long-term injury, seek immiate medical hp for an erection lasting more than 4 hours. if you have any sudden decrease or loss in hearing or vision, or if you have any allergic reactions such as rash, hives, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, stop taking cialis and get medical help right away.

7:43 am
on sunday housecall we not only make you healthy but happy. there are new questions about the effort to help treat female sexual dysfunction. coming is a pill that's touted as the female viagra. it's struggling though to get fda approval. dr. samadi i think it just takes the right guy. if there's a pill that can help, why don't they approve it? i made you blush, go ahead. >> we're just celebrating 15 years of viagra. that really changed the way we practiced medicine. for us, for men, it's easy. this is a mechanical problem, it's a plumbing issue. you take the viagra, it brings the blood flow to the male organ
7:44 am
or penis and it works really well. with women it seems to be totally different and the diagnosis is really this hypo meaning the libido or the drive is not there and difficulty with arousal and it's much more complex. it's not just plumbing issues or blood to the area. something in the brain, the exchange between the dopamine and sar atonen. we know it's not just mechanical. it's emotional, psychological. the chemistry has to be there, the right guy has to be there. all of that has to work in before this kicks in. now -- >> so what's this drug? >> fda has looked into this. it's a medication that research was done about three years ago. they looked at about 1900 women. it's an antidepressant and it's not hormonal. they gave it to them for about 24 weeks and they found an increase of 18% libido and
7:45 am
drive. fda is worried about the safety and still put a ban on this and hasn't come out. the national organization and all the women and female organization are up in arms about this. they're upset but the ironic part of this is that the person who runs the fda right now is a woman and wants more safety clinical trials. >> what about the side effects? >> right now it seems to be only nausea and dizziness. we're hoping that this will come out in the future. >> i agree with david completely on this particular drug. women around menopause may have a problem with dryness, estrogen creams or testosterone creams are used to improve sexual desire. hormone replacement therapy may have a role in improving sexual dysfunctional women around menopause stage. in 2008 the journal in the american medical association published a study that i had already been doing, women on antidepressants and 30 to 70% of
7:46 am
men and women on antidepressants have sexual problems and they responded to viagra, the viagra used in men. so that's not off the table either for women. >> you have used it for women? >> absolutely, women on antidepressants. it's a technical thing. as david mentioned, it improves blood flow to the area. that shouldn't be a problem with women but studies show when they're on specific antidepressants that is -- >> talk to the doctor that's describing. >> absolutely. >> let me jump some. this point is important because female sexual dysfunction is multifactorial and then you have different groups causing different -- the one that marc is talking about, the ones that may have a problem with lubrication, blood flow, perhaps viagra may help in those group of patients. >> please don't try it without talking to your doctor.
7:47 am
>> a doctor has to prescribe it. >> but there are other types of patients that may have other issues. >> other patients can respond to lubricants or the pills. >> you've given women some options and hopefully the fda will come up with something for those women who are not getting the full satisfaction that they deserve. >> do you have to go to the bathroom a lot? coming up the doctors will at the present you about what you really may have to worry about if that's the case. sunday housecall continues. so i get invited to quite a few family gatherings. heck, i saved judith here a fortune with discounts like safe driver, multi-car, paperless. you make a mighty fine missus, m'lady. i'm not saying mark's thrifty. les just say, i saved him $519, and it certainly didn't go toward that ring. am i right? to urinate. is this normal or should i worry? >> assuming we're talking about a man here, david is going to take this over and talk about bph, which means your prostate gets big and that's why it's happening to you. i'm going to leave that to him. it's one of his areas of expertise. but i want to mention a couple of other things. first of all, i don't consider this normal. you should get it checked out. are you drinking a lot of water before you go to bed? number one. do you have a problem with sleep appear mia? because you could be waking up and going to the bathroom when you're awake? could you be a diabetic? could you have a urinary infection that's lingering and improperly treated? you have to keep track of how much water you drink before you go to bed. because cutting down in water may cut down in the problem. >> what's normal? you get up a night maybe once, is that okay? >> that's okay. one time over the age of 50 is certainly okay. when it starts getting beyond two times, we start to be concerned that there could be an underlying problem.
7:52 am
if the prostate enlarges, it puts problems on the bladder and the bladder is empty. >> the other thing i would add to this is if you're taking diuretics, you're going to be going to bed and getting up all the time. but large prostate is when the prostate gets enlarged, it breaths on the urethra. and what happens is men get up, they go to the bathroom, they try to empty, they but they don't completely empty their urine. this continues. it interrupts their sleep, they're always tired. what we do as a urologist, we basically locate it with a scope, see the size of the prostate, you use that to find out what the residual is. based on that, you either do no treatment or you may give them some treatment like flomax or
7:53 am
one of these blockers that help them urinate better. eventually, there are surgical treatments where you shave off pause or the prostate and you do amazingly well. i would not worry been but make sure you see your urologist. >> how about women? is their bladder really smaller? >> women, it's a totally different analogy. the urethra is very short. a lot of times, these are irritable bladders or urgencies or some sort of infection. again, they need to see a urologist, check their urine, look at the blader and make sure there is no type of bladder cancer or issues that could cause this. >> medication could cause it, other medication like anti-depress yapts. for women, urinary tract infections and if you've been pregnant, your bladder control can definitely weaken as any woman who has had a child will tell you. >> you don't think about needing a urologist as a woman.
7:54 am
that's interesting. you know how it is when you have the craving for a great meal like lobster, macaroni or cheese or a nice piece of steak, you got it on your fork and whoops, there it goes, you drop it. do you risk anything if you pick it up and eat it? how about that five-second rule? you're going to be really surprised, i think, when you hear what our doctors have to say about that, next.
7:57 am
welcome back, everybody. i am skeptical of this new research. i didn't have breakfast and i'm looking around on the floor thinking maybe someone left a little something from this morning. but the doctors are going to tell us the truth about the five-second rule. would it be safe to eat something that fell on the floor and was there less than five seconds? dr. samadi? really? >> i hope you are not looking for food on the floor. you can't afford to get -- >> there's that danger. >> really? >> no, look, this is a study coming from the uk, jamie.
7:58 am
what they did, they basically between zero to 30 seconds, they dropped cookies and toast and pasta, watched it from anywhere to zero seconds to 30 seconds and they found out that somewhere between zero to five seconds could be safe, but more than that, bacterias are going to come in and so after five seconds, don't touch it. moist food, such as pasta and cheese and other things attract more bacteria, obviously, than toast. and also carpet was safer than the tile. having said that, i also think that instead of five-second rule, it should be also a touchdown rule. meaning if you grab the food in the air, you're safe in my book. but if it hits the floor, it's over. i think there's too many bacteria, you have e. coli, sam mow nell la, forget it. >> one problem with this, and i come out with david on this, too. it's something i would never recommend, even if it's a cookie which doesn't pick up a lot of
7:59 am
bacteria or a gummy bear which does not pick up a lot of bacteria. this study showed there wasn't a lot of bacteria on the floor in general. but someone could track in fecal bacteria on their shoes and you ended up with a stomach bug. >> that's disgusting. >> the cat, the dog walk on the floor. your shoes are on the floor. >> meanwhile you just picked up a cookie. >> i have to tell you one other thing. jillian clark back in 2004 won an ig nobel prize from harvard university for thoughtfulness saying and humor saying the five second rule was bogus. julian clark, you are right. do not eat off the floor. >> meanwhile, did you see during the commercial where he picked up the cookie? >> can you rinse it off? >> no. get rid of it. >> on that, it's a viagra pill, then it's safe. >> wash it off. wash it off. >> thank you, doctors. >> thank you, doctors. >> we end on urology.
8:00 am
>> perfect. >> that's going to do it for us. i'm jamie colby. we hope this information keeps you healthy and happy this week. >> media buzz now starts with howard kurts which is next right here on the fox news channel. >> give me that cookie, eric. on the buzz meter this sunday, television devoted hundreds and hundreds of hours to the saga of the missing malaysian plane. >> let's talk about the scenario of hijacking. could that account for the basic question here of an inability to have contact with the ground? yes, of course it could. >> that leads to the next question which is, okay, is it a single active terrorist as part of something greater or is it an accident that is part of a flaw that is in other planes? >> all the mistakes and the theories and speculation out of control or has this become a parlor game for ratings? cheryl atkinson, who has been investigating the obama
