3:02 am
a press conference held moments ago and we learned that apparently data from the pilot's flight simulator computer apparently -- pictured right there -- was deleted before he last left. joining us from the d.c. bureau with the latest details is our manç doug luzader. >> this is an interesting development. malaysian officials talked about this continued focus on the pilot himself and the fact that he was an aviation enthusiast. he had his own home-built flight simulator and they have spent a lot of time looking at this. they took it out of his home examined it, and found some of the files may have been deleted. this is interesting because one of the things they could have found here is evidence he may have made dry runs on this simulator. what was deleted? malaysian officials now turn to, for instance, the f.b.i. which can oftentimes forensically look at these things and find out where that data went and rebuild the information that was
3:03 am
deleted. the other thing, we've heard talk about the possibility that this aircraft went to another airport in the region. there is no question that there are hundreds, if not thousands ofç airports that would have been within reach of this aircraft and many were in this flight simulator. that in and of itself may not tell us a whole lot. it would have been surprising if airports in that region would not have been part of this flight simulator program. nevertheless, the fact that these files were deleted, a very interesting development as they continue to look at this pilot and what he may have been doing in the days and weeks before the flight disappeared. as far as the actual search is concerned, we're still talking about the same focus and that is that southern track that takes us very near australia. this is where the united states is lending a fair amount of expertise and a lot is coming in the form of a modifiedç 737 that can hunt for submarines or in this instance it can hunt for any kind of wreckage that may still be floating out there in the ocean. the problem is here we are beyond ten days out.

3:06 am
missing plane was 12 minutes into a new program, 12 minutes made that turn that we have been seeing on the diagram. >> this news broke last night that apparently after he, 12 minutes before he said good night the plane was already turning. what we told you yesterday was apparently for that turn, it had to be programmed in the computer which suggests it wasn't a hijacker who jumped in the cockpit and suddenly twisted the plane to the west. it was computer driven. somebody told it, with knowledge of how the 777 works, and now with the news that apparently it had been programmed much before the big turn. keep in mind -- we heard the copilot's word where he said "all right, good night." at that point if there was trouble, he could have said byç the way we're making a detour right now, if something came up. he did not. >> 12 minutes prior to that, it was already newly

so until there is some solid evidence that there was a crash, i think we're going to be looking for this plane for a while. >> philip, to your point about that emergency beacon, if there is no pinging from the beacon,ç could the pilot possibly have disabled that? >> i don't think so. no. those things are designed to withstand lots of different stresses. i don't think that's something that the pilot would necessarily have been able to disengage. >> are those located in the tail? >> i'm not sure. >> yeah, they are. >> i know has two of them. >> john, how long will they look? >> well, they'll look for a long time. i think the intensive search will probably taper off if they don't find anything in the next couple weeks or month. it's very expensive to run these intensive searches. so it's not clear who is going to pay for it. >> sure. it's also not clear where the plane is and that's why we called you guys in. thank you very much. great answers. >> thank you. great questions as well. thank you very much. >> keep them coming.
