9:01 pm
march 8th. all of the families wondering what happened to loves ones australian authorities saying two objects have been found. joining us by phone is mike boyd a aviation security expert. mike, they're going to be trying to 0 in on the objects what are they go owing do after that? >> if a determination they're from that 777 the next step will be track back where they came from in the water then try to focus on where the plane might have hit the water then look to the black box. >> tell us again. you know when you're talking about debris in the water if it's from a crash and we don't know that, we haven't gotten specifics but if they are talk about the fact that debris can be spread around. >> it could have floated for days. if it is debris. that means you have currents, winds, these things you're going
9:02 pm
to go back to try to track that back to find out where they did hit the water. then focus on that. if they float, it's been a week now. nothing is static in the water. >> and we're hearing these objects were spotted on satellite imagery they do have to take a look to make sure of what exactly this is. what the find is. we've had reports all over the place as far as what direction, what happened to it, different theorys why do you think officials finally focused on this particular area off the coast of australia? >> i think they had good indications that is where the plane was headed now keep in mind piloted as far as we know. so they could have changed direction. we may end up finding out this, you know flotsam and jetsam floating in the water and we're back to square one.
9:03 pm
i don't think the prime minister would have made the statement if he wasn't reasonably sure that this was the airplane. >> we should be hearing more as well. we're talking about what is going to happen next. if they do find they're from the plane, then what? >> well, again, they're going try to track back to where those objects would have initially hit the water then look for the black box. that is going to tell us a lot of things black box and other indicators like that. that is what they're going to look at. that may be just as difficult as trying to find the airplane itself. >> yes. you're talking about the fact there could be debris all over. tell us a little built more about how that might make things more difficult for investigators and searchers out there. >> well, keep in mind this is a big piece of machinery. wrur going to have bits and pieces going into all driks.
9:04 pm
that doesn't necessarily mean these are the only pieces or these are the ones that are going to lead tt airplane itself. that is going to be the challenge. if it is the airplane we have this to go with, which means at least the families have closure. that would be, i mean a dark benefit, but it's a benefit. >> you talk about that closure, you know, if i were a family member i'd probably want some pretty definite proof this was from that airliner crash. how thorough are the crews looking going to be in the future? >> i think within minut they find these pieces, take them out of the water they'll know whether they came from this specific triple 7. it won't take long. >> we talk about the fact once they find the debris, you
9:05 pm
mentioned black boxes a couple times what that might be able to tell investigators, what are they going to be looking for? >> well, they're going to be looking for what the airplane did from the time it took off. hopefully, the black box has not been monkeyed with. i suspect they couldn't get to it. the thing it probably won't tell us is why they did this and what the intent was that will be what we're going to find out from other sources >> i don't think that is something people have given much thought to. it could have been miss mesed with. that is something you have seen before? >> well, i had not i had not seen indication of anything like this in 40 years in this racket. this is all new territory for everybody, including the magician who would be investigating the wreckage.
9:06 pm
these people that investigate wreckage they're magicians they can find things we mere mortals can't. we can't understand why this was done. that is going to take another whole investigation. >> and in talking about all of the different theorys you know everyone is around the knowledge of the plane that a person would have had to have had to turn off communications devices and everything else. so if you're talking about messing with a black box that would have to be someone that really knows what they're looking for and knows the plane. >> there is no question. this whole thing is not amateur act. someone planned it out carefully. i don't know why. but some one did plan this out very, very carefully. >> let's go back again for people just joining us and have not heard what is going on. australian prime minister announcing they found a couple objects in the water off the coast of australia. they think they may be connected
9:07 pm
to the missing malaysian jetliner. there is going to be a longer investigation into this. they're going to have to take a closer look. i'm speaking with mike boyd right now, an aviation security expert. we're talking about what they're going to do, when, if they determine that this actually is debris from the missing jetliner. and mike, i'll let you elaborate on that again as far as where this is going to go from here. >> i have to go quick here but here is the deal the minute they can get their hands on this debris, they will know yes or no. if it's a yes they're going to take a look at where it has floated over past 8 or 9 days and go from there. big thing is that is not going to tell us why this happened or what the real intent was. it's going to be an intelligence problem. >> it could take a bit of time. >> yes. it could.
9:08 pm
>> mike boyd thank you for staying with us and giving us your valuable insight. again, i want to let people know australian prime minister announcing not too long ago that they have found two objects could be connected to the search for the malaysian jetliner. prime minister abbott telling parliament there in canberra the royal australian air force has been diverted to that area. it's expected to arrive sometime thursday afternoon along with it, three additional aircraft to aid in the search but we're so far no word on where these objects were found or what led investigators to believe this could be part of that missing airliner the search already had been narrowed to an area off the coast of australia. they thought it might have been heading in that direction. now they found these two objects the plane carrying 239 people has been missing a couple weeks, missing march 8th. took off from kuala lumpur on the way to bejing.
9:09 pm
we know it never made it. relatives have been agonizing the past weeks wondering what happened. we have heard every possible theory that you can imagine on what happened to this plane. over the past weeks and now, we're going news tonight from australian prime minister who is saying they have found a couple objects. one aviation security exert said now they're going to have to take a look ask determine yes, these objects frr a boeing 777 then they're going to have to expand and try to look for other debris that could have been floating around out there this whole time. if these objects are related to the plane. so this is going to be a long process, unfortunately, for the family members but at least, he said just by examining they'll be able to tell if they're from a boeing 777 that will be the beginning. then they'll have to expand the
9:10 pm
search. they're hoping to find that black box which is, should tell them what happened, you know in the last moments. because until now this has been speculation and people's theorys and guesses as to what might have happened to this plane. this expert saying this is the first time he's seen anything like this in 40 years he's never seen a plane just disappear and nobody knows what happened. so it's sounds like and hearing from the australian prime minister that they have a pretty good idea that this is debris could be from that plane. but again, they're going to have to take a look before that can be determined. this debris, if it is from the plane could have been out there for quite a while. so that is why he said the investigation isn't just going to be finding the debris saying okay this is it. it's going to be more intense, the search could go on for a very long time.
9:11 pm
especially if they're unable to locate the black box. and i want to go ahead and let you listen in to what the australian prime minister had to say just moments ago. >> speaking further if i may. australian mayora time safety authority received information based on satellite imagery of objects possibly related to the search. following specialist analysis of the satellite imagery, two possible objects have been identified. i can inform the house that a royal australian air force orien is expected to arrive at about this time. three more aircraft will follow this orion by our task for more

intensive follow up search. i've spoken to my malaysian counter part and informed him of the developments. i should tell the house and we must keep this in mind the task of locating these objects will be extremely difficult and may turn out they're not related to the search for flight mh 370. never theless i did want to update the house on this potentially important development. >> we're listening to the australian prime minister briefing on objects found that could be related to the missing malaysian boeing 777. they have sent planes out to take a look at the debris to see what it is and if it is related if they find out it is related they have to expand the search. you have to understand it could have been floating out for a while. so this far from over.
9:13 pm
waiting to get confirmation on what the objects could be and then, the investigation will begin from there. so again, australian prime minister just announcing two objects could be related to the missing airliner. we'll have more coming up. uhhh. no, that can't happen. that's the thing, you don't know how long it has to last. everyone has retirement questions. so ameriprise created the exclusive.. confident retirement approach. now you and your ameripise advisor can get the real answers you need. well, knowing gives you confidence. start building your confident retirement today. play in it. work in it. go wild in it. do everything but wrinkle in it. the perfect fitting no-iron effortless shirt in 4 styles and 31 colors and prints. visit the shirt boutique, only at chico's and chicos.com. ♪

transportation safety board from the united states which had said focus in this area. what the ntsb had done was brought in all of the conflicting information we'd been receiving up to two weeks now. put it together and say what is most credible? what markers make most sense? we know the jet moved to north so when it left kuala lumpur it turned back into the west. that it made what appeared to be according to data given, a number of jogs in a northern arc or southern arc. officials had been saying over the northern arc it would have been over land. it didn't make sense to anyone involved no one would have spotted it. there are many radar stagses along the way. it could have flown until 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning there. so it's possible people should have seen such a thing but there weren't any credible roberts of that. so focusing on this southern arc

taking it down into the indian ocean now, we know the area they believe they found something. two large pieces of something. that they apparently have reason to believe may be the jet. about 1550 miles south and west of perth, australia. australian prime minister spoke and just busted this out in the middle of a parliament session that satellites have spotted this in the indian ocean. from there, they send a jet over to begin searching the area. it went through this maritime safety authority and management there, john young just had those words for us. they know where it is. in a general sense, they know the size of it. but they can't be certain it's part of the jet they can't until they doing thi.

left hand would be indicating one thing. right hand pulls it back. we're past that stage cheerily the national transportation safety board from united states said focus here. australians did that they trained satellites on it and put people on it. they found this debris in the water. now, they sent the jet. three more jets. and we should know in due time whether this is in fact part of the triple seven missing 12 days.

authorities are being careful to remind us weather is not right the search area is large. they're trying to down play expectations of where and when this may be found i want to get to catherine herrige. as far as information making sense this is the first time i can remember it appears at least we have something new. >> when you look at the dots they've laid out in 72 hours, what you see is that this second intense review by national transportation safety board and faa of the existing signals data military civilian then, also satellite factoring in, whether fuel, led them to a targeted area the goal to layout a new trajectory and smaller assets we've just heard is that this

debris found is consistent with that new search area within about 100 miles. the search area that was released last night also contained what they called a drift area so to account for movement, possible movement of debris eastward. ago is an intelligence organization mr the department of defense in australia. it's the lead geo spacial intelligence agency for that country. intelligence community in australia also in the united states and elsewhere, have been fully engaged on this and heard the at the news conference they're going to refocus it and refine it with the use of civilian satellites. all of this does lead to a series of dots which are consistent which we have not seen before in two weeks.

the size of the debris, one object as you rightly point out is about 80 meters. this is a piece >> 24 meters, 78 feet, thank you. this is is consistent. there is a tail section with vertical fin or the horizontal stabilizer. i think you'll agree expectations were very, very low in this is in the sense that they're finding images and it's going to take a significant period of time to hoke yat this debris apart from what is on the

satellite. and third, they're heavy to work to this what may be a debris field and then, back to shore. what we're told from the pentagon yesterday is that it would take about three hours one time, start to finish. two hours, two hours travel time, and then one hour on site so there is a limited window and as you highlight there are weather factors as well. >> it's important to remember that during the crash of air france they found debris in mater of days and years before they were able to find block boxes there. >> and they believe they

new search area. >> yes. he didn't use the words debris field. i was wondering if you didn't use the word intentionally as if someone said don't use this. >> certainly debris field is something you do point out. >> i want to get to a former commercial pilot. there are many things that are remaining up in the air f they have found this plane, and we do not know yet whether they have, if they have found it, why in the world was it there? who changed the flight pattern and why? what is the motivation here? why would you do it? we don't have answers. >> no. we don't. ways trying to imagine the map

in my head, of where we last saw the airplane over the gulf of thailand. and then, it made that left turn, heading west, southwest. if it continued in a straight line, it almost sounds to be like this debris is located nlong that line somewhere. >> i don't have a map in front of me. >> is that the way it would look to you? >> that's how it appears. the reason we are putting a map up with a specific location to the 1,500 miles south and west of perth. we could do that obviously. but to do that would just -- he doesn't mean exactly southwest. it's not due southwest of there. they don't know exactly where it is. it's a moving target. >> that's true. >> but to say that it's along the line as described to us for the past three days, is absolutely true. >> yeah, and of course what we

also have to keep in mind, is that if it is this debris, it's only going to be some pieces that we're going to find. it's going to, as you said, it's going to take time to find it. but of course we'll want to know where the rest of it is. as you mentioned earlier, the air france accident, that was the initial. that was the one clue that confirmed for us -- [ inaudible ]
