making sure there is water. >> why is angelina jolie of the list of the best leaders in the world? we'll tell you. >> thank you, boys. >> caution, you are about to enter the no spin zone, the factor begins right now. ♪ ♪ >> hi, i'm bill o'reilly. >> thanks for watching us tonight. the update on the missing airliner and putin's foley. those are the subject's in this evening's talking points memo. first a jet liner, here's what's new. the fbi has taken the pilot's similarity removed from his home in malaysia to virginia for analysis. i also believe the fbi is looking at the pilot and co-pilot's cell phone transmissions. that is a key to figuring out the airline mystery. the strong evidence is the pilot and/or co-pilot sabotaged the plane. so the fbi's role is vital.

as far as the search is concerned, good luck. the vast indian ocean is the most difficult place on earth in which to find anything. planes have a very short time to look because there is nowhere to land and they run out of fuel. china is sending a flotilla of vessels but they are still days away. so a clear resolution to the jet liner mystery seems to be far off in the future. now, on to our pal putin and his thugies in misco-are mocking the u.s.a. for imposing a few sanctions against putin's nationallers. sings they lost the land grab the stock market down 10% and russian ruble is losing as well. if they impose harsh sanctions on russia next week that could be enough to wreck the russian economy. let's see if putin will yuck that up. there is no question that barack obama must take the leadership role here. so next week in holland is a

stern test for the president. talking points believes there are two immediate ways to damage russia. one, american financial institutions should stop accepting the russian currency. and, two, the president should urge american express, master card and visa, not to accept any purchases made in russia. that will kill travel to and from that country and isolate it economically. those things are doable and you can do them fast. the world must teach putin a lesson he will never forget. because, if the world does not, putin will continue to cause trouble and other villains all over the place will be emboldened. and that's the memo. now for the top story tonight, reaction, with us, fox business guru lou dobbs, author of the big new book "upheaval." i think we have to upheave this russian economy. >> not as easy as one might suspect. this is a major economy. it by -- depending on how

you measure it, this g.d.p. of russia rises to the rank of either six or seventh in the world. it is a sophisticated economy, unlike 20 years ago and the fall of the soviet union. it is now a very difficult economy to injure through sanctions. in my opinion, any economy is difficult with sanctions. >> as you you know, i'm a simple man and you are a brilliant man. all right? this is why i want you to explain. this i'm the president, okay? number one you are i do ported immediately. -- deported immediately. number two, i make some calls to some of the big financial guys. >> right. the credit card companies. i say you know what? i want you to do me a favor. i don't want you guys and i want you to send all your credit card holders we are not going to accept any charges made in the soviet union or any charges made to the soviet airlines, soviet, russian are, russian, same thing now.

tonight. as we told you in the talking points memo the fbi now taking the lead in the investigation of the missing jetliner case. at least behind the scenes. but we understand that anything the bureau finds out will be firsthanded over to the malaysian government which i think is a mistake. joining us now from san francisco former faa senior official scott brenner. you agree with me the real hope of finding out what happened here lies with the fbi? >> there is a a hope there, bill. i think this is a half measure by the malaysian government. since this plane first disappeared on march 8th, we continue to get these half-measures from the government. they will give us a little bit of information and then later on a little bit more. we need to get all the facts. we need to open this investigation to all the parties, let everybody understand what's going on, and then maybe we can start making some progress. >> okay. but, look, when you are dealing with a government in the third world, malaysia, which doesn't want to be embarrassed, a lot of muslim tensions there and everything like that, it is very encouraging to me that they allowed the fbi to take this similarity, as we

talked in the talking points memo, to virginia to quantico, where they are going to it analyze it, and i knowed fbi is looking at the cell phones of these two guys getting the records and this is what is going to provide the evidence that one or both guys sabotaged the plane. and i don't see any other way because you are not going to find the black box. you are not going to get all of of that data in. the fbi is the only hope right now. >> i think it is a hope. but i think we're gonna find the black box. may not find wreckage for a long time. we're going to find that black box. it may take a year or two years. we will find it. again, i don't know if there is going to be a lot of answers on that black box if we do find it. >> look, if the guys were turning off the transponders and everything else, now i don't want to embarrass geraldo, if there is a fire in the plane, the first thick the pilots do is radio in as a formerrer faa guy, you you know that. there is a fire in the plane. and if they were going to land in some land strip,

they certainly want everybody to have knowledge of that so they could fire trucks out there and everything else. or am i crazy? >> you are not crazy. and every credible pilot i talk to about this theory, they just kind of laughed it of o. the first thing they are taught, any kind of smell of smoke, put on oxygen mask, full oxygen. still smoke? you put on the goggles. then you ask for clearance for the nearest runway. you just can't make a left and then start trying to find a runway. there are other aircraft up there. and then the theory continues. they have shut down all the power and that's where the transponder and the acar system all shut off. if they would have done that they would have been in pitch black. what pilot is going to turn off all his power to be in pitch black? and then the plane flies on for another seven hours. >> why? because everybody was dead and then -- okay. all right. so we -- all right. again, now, i think this story is pretty much over for now. now, certainly the media is

going to squeeze every drop out of it and at this point i disagree with you and you you are much smarter than i am, mr. brenner, i'm not being disrespectful. >> thank you. >> i don't think they are ever going to find that plane and black box. they might find some debris floating around in the south indian ocean. but you know as well as i do that is such a vast area, there is very little traffic in there, the chinese are sending a whole bunch of boats over. they are not going to get there for three or four days. the aussies say they can't even search it with planes because it's so far away and they are running out of gas and they have to come back. and so, come on, i mean, even if they find the debris, the black box is in, what, 24,000 feet of water or something like that? i mean, this is part of the deepest oceans in the world. >> i think you are selling our technology short here, bill. we have been able to find the black box in the air france crash. we will be able to find this one as well. >> i'm hoping you're right. i'm not selling the technology short but the technology couldn't even pick up the airliner. we got a pew -- few pings

here and there. the satellite couldn't pinpoint it so i can't be that faithful. the final question i have for you this evening is the people who are in charge of the investigation in the melee government the defense minister and the government and all of that. to me they have 100% botched this. am i wrong? >> no. you are are absolutely right on this again, bill. the malaysian defense industry are not used to sharing information. they don't understand the true meaning of freedom. you have to have absolute openness when you come to an investigation like this. they may think they don't -- what they are sharing is important. there is a lot of stuff they are not sharing that is very important. we need to find out the whole story. >> all right. i don't think they want to know what happened to this plane. because if it's some muslim thing they don't want to be embarrassed by it again, that's speculation. let me take that statement back. can i take it back?

personal story segment tonight. it's getting very personal with the media covering the jetliner story. todd of news saturated and cnn tweeted back at todd. i your humble correspondent has spoken out about the insane speculation as well. the hln network actually brought on a psychic to talk about the missing plane. >> i do believe that it actually crashed and i see a lot of trees. i kept feeling as though yes, there are some people that had passed away because it's only natural after these amount of days that someone is going to cross with no food, no water, but i also believe there was a hijacking, and i think there is also a larger organization behind all of this. >> joining us now from washington howard kurtz host of media buzz seen mondays

on fnc. is i bill the soothsayer was hired by the network. we are heading in that direction what say you? >> yes. it's a new low. when cnn anchors are talking about super natural explanations and black holes, the media's credibility is vanishing into a black hole. i think have you been a little soft in your criticism. you said the whole thing was turning into a farce which suggests it's kind of funny this is a fiasco for journalism. forget about college basketball, this is march madness. >> a guy has a book out on the making of network, that's the movie where howard behl, i'm mad as hell and cybil the soothsayer this is getting very very spooky in real life. the polls that that journalists are about as popular with the american public as book makers. i think we are down there 15, 20% range i thousand now we're diagnose to degeneres descend even further.

people watching the madness, even people driving by to watch the craziness, they know it's irresponsible coverage. they are going to remember. but i could be wrong about that. >> no, no. a lot of people tell me they are tuning. in you turn on the tv in 30 seconds can you tell whether the breaking news banners at cnn or nbc putting up refer to anything new in the last 48 hours. often they do not. here is what happened. cnn was out of the gate first covering this 26 hours a day, bill. and it's ratings doubled and this week fox and nbc started to cold front missing plane more, including lots of speculation, even you seem to be doing a bit more of it you had geraldo on to talk about his crazy theories. >> that's so i could make fun of him. that was an entertaining segment. >> okay. >> i understand cnn's dilemma. i do. i'm not saying this with any kind of cheap shot capability. the network is in dire ratings trouble. they get a pulse. okay? so the executives order. you guys got to do this

wall-to-wall. because we are now -- it's more than double getting people we haven't seen since they were a teenager. they are coming back. they want the story. we will give them the story. we know it's b.s. but we have got it rebuild this news network. so, they are basically saying we know -- they have to know because cnn is a good operation. you know -- >> -- i agree. >> they have good people over there. >> i agree. >> they know what they are doing is wrong. but they are saying we have to do it. we have to it. there is no other way. and so, how do you deal with that? >> well, cnn's dilemma is now everybody's dilemma in capable news which is the worst offender here which is if you decide to go all in on the story you have a lot of hours to fill there are very few facts as you know. you bring on experts and analysts and profilers and they spin their theories. msnbc, ed schultz said the plane may have landed in the jungle. geraldo talking about picking up a secret

passenger. zombie plane. critic of this. don't you care about the passengers? don't you think this is an important story? don't the ratings show people want this cover? yeah, it's a really important story. those 239 passengers might have been murdered but we don't know. we don't know whether there was a fire. it is just reckless and it is undermining the credibility of journalism to be pushing this stuff when you don't have much to back it up. >> well, i think the tide has turned. last night the factor dominated in the ratings against wall-to-wall coverage of this. and i think people are starting to say, you know, enough is enough. however, the people don't usually watch news, howard. these are the people that are in now, the people that watch unsolved mysteries and all of this. they're coming in. but as soon as this story goes away, they will go away. >> the stuff is like crack. you can get a short-term ratings bump which might mean a half million people in the case of cable news. but, it's like your stock price going up, then it goes down and you devalue your

thanks for staying with us, i'm bill o'reilly in the impact segment tonight. the best leaders on earth, "fortune magazine" has listed the top 50 and there are no american elected officials currently in office on the list, including president obama. he is not on the list. president clinton made the cut but, of course, he is out of office. with us now to analyze six of the selections, mike huckabee, you see his program saturday night at 8:00 on fnc. all right. pope francis is the number one best leader in the world. do you condition cure? >> i think that's a great chiss. pope francis has done a lot of things. first of all, transforming the folks of the catholic church back to the people who were poor. i think he has done a remarkable job of reaching out to the untouchables of the world. he has cleaned up the vatican bank. he has done the things that you say this is a world leader. >> a lot of people said to me in america they don't really know. but in the third world, he

is reveered already. >> yes. >> already. and donations to the poor are up about 25% since he took over the papacy. i underunderstand angela merkel is a politician. i don't think she is a courageous woman or leader what say you. >> i think she has been a leader in terms of what do you have in europe? you certainly don't have a socialist who found out that people weren't all that fond of socialism once they saw what it was going to look like. i think she has brought some stability to an otherwise struggling european economy. she has been very forceful in speaking out when she finds issues with the united states. maybe not number two, but she certainly deserves to be no less. >> i disagree. when she could have helped us in afghanistan, she did not. okay. i thoughts that that was appalling. that was appalling. all right. so the germans sat it out. number two, we protect

angela merkel. we protect germany. the german government doesn't protect germany we do. we are paying for angela merkel's suture. on this issue where she should have led? what is is she doing. >> what is she doing. >> stick with number two, angela merkel. if she is such a hot shot leader what's she doings. >> she is doing what she is doing for germany. >> i don't care about germany. >> she has brought in a very unstable economic climate she has brought stability to our country. she is not greece, she is not france, she is not the u.k. and she is not right you, the u.s.a. >> the governor and i disagree on merkel. bill clinton's on the list. now, i have mixed feelings about the former president. you know him much better than i do. >> yeah. >> your reaction to him on the list is? >> i think he probably deserves it. once again, leadership is not only what you do, it's what you encourage other people to do. bill clinton has encouraged an enormous number of coes to ceos to donate lots of money to h.i.v. aids
