4:04 pm

4:06 pm
janice, i am reading 40 or 50 foot waves out there. >> sure, this area is hard to get to as the reporters mentioned with the winds and waves and getting in the fall and winter months in the region and more storm systems and they are both of the areas of possible debris. yellow from last week and red where we saw the images on sidle early this morning. and it is very strong currents and continuous movement inryfñ water. it is a curvature, due to the earth's rotation. and the wind and temperature and the tides and the pull of the moon. and this is where we have
4:07 pm
prevailing ocean currents and the counter clock wise currents. and you would think that the general direction of the debris would move east and north. but that is not the case. there are small whirlpools that can form. and they can have a bigger circulation as well. if you have aircraft or ships moving in, they could have a problem getting out there and then the weather. another storm system moving in the region overnight. and then a period of calmer weather and another one moving in on wednesday and thursday. they need to take the window of opportunity where they don't have storm systems pushing in and assess the possible debris in this region. >> and not to make light of this janice, you could write a book
4:08 pm
on the scenario. >> it is one of the most unac iszible areas in earth. >> retired british officer and royal air forces with me now. and i know the special gifts that i share with the audience. you and many pilots like yourself have a special vision. you can spot it. even if it has to be corrected. you are looking with a specific type of eye. what do you so in the satellite images. >> you are right. and we are two weeks in the investigation and you have no evidence what so ever that is shedding light on the mystery. and so any information that we have to lead to further information is weather and that leads us to the chinese satellite. we heard about the australian
4:09 pm
satellite image. it was briefed by the australian prime minister in parlimit. we have a new image. but as janice alluded to, we are still 1500 miles away from the southwestern tip of australia. it is one of the most inhospitable places in earth to conduct a search operation. only because it is impossible to get the aircraft out of there. >> and we have the winds that are swirling. >> and talk to me in terms of the tracking. okay, you are the pilot and in the sky and moving in one direction. and this bulk of debris is moving in a fast clip. >> the important thing to know we don't know if it is debris. go to the satellite image.
4:10 pm
the satellite picture so far comes us with a low resolution. it is empossible to so what it is. the earthquake that was deployed in the south area and check out the initial image. that is already moved. and they found a freighter and dolphens. these types can the containers or dolphens. and it could be a refraction of light they are seeing. it is inconclusive. >> talk to me about finding a wood paddle and scattered debris on the water's surface and what that indicates. it sounds like more things on a boat and not an aerp airplane. >> they have wooden crates on ships and wouldn't seem unusual
4:11 pm
for crates there. there is a lot of logical explanation. we need to get the aircraft overhead. >> and janice dean saying you have a small window to do. that talk to me about what they are using to search. this is the p3. it his four-engines and turboprops and travels four miles a minute. >> i am going to reach across. there you go. >> and this is the nerve center the and the pilot will get us out to the location and down the back. there is a tactical controller and they get over in the search area and controls all of the people looking at the radar. these have kits on them. telescopic camera and thermal imageing and it is a c detector. and basically what the drones
4:12 pm
have. >> it looks like a drone. it is sucking up all of the information. and problem is, technology has limitations and you talked about the roirment for eyesight. and janice was talking about the inhospitable sea state and the big waves, there is a more chance of getting eyes on with your eyes than techesiologist. when the rain and clouds come down and visibility. it is a nightmare. this is a p8. >> i am just getting word. doug was on a momenting on, and we thought it was going to run another mission today. they have maintained the plane 24 hours and they are just working on it. tell"ddt me about this one. >> this is the anti- submarine aircraft. this was procured by the
4:13 pm
australians. and this is a half billion dollar jet. and full of technology. and it is twice as fast as this. we can get there quicker but not huge amounts of loiter time. >> and the posidien will fly and reach that center moves in quickly. and you know, we are hearing so much about the hardware out there and all of this. is this a time frame that we are talking about? some of the planes do need more down time than 24 hours. >> especially when you have one. this is up in maybe nine hours but not just the aircraft but the crew. >> does anybody else have it. >> and as far as i am aware that is a good question. i am not sure who is operating it. and i know the australians have eight. and one air-borne and not as if it can rotate around-the-clock.
4:14 pm
>> right, right, right. >> it is 72 by 43 feet. i don't want to get in conjecture land. pilots say that is roughly the size of what? >> a wenning? >> impossible to say. one thing on the air france was the tail. that is quite important area or maybe a large section of the wing. it depends on how hard it hits the water. >> and so appreciate it. and we'll be back in a moment, stay close. respiratory
