the most difficult to search anywhere in the world. they are looking for any part of flight 370. they narrowed the search. none of the objects spotted in satellite images released that have been found and even if they are from the missing flight and we don't know they are, the plane's critical black box that could tell us what happened could be hundreds of miles away. live from bangkok reporting on the search. what do we know this morning? >> reporter: france announced their satellite spotted objects floating in the southern indian ocean. they have not released images yet, but the spokes men said the objects were spotted about 1400 miles southwest of perth, australia. the search for the missing plane has started up in the southern indiana ocean. planes from australia and the u.s. were involved. the naval ship that reported

that nothing significant was found. the planes have been making a four-hour journey to the search area southwest of perth, australia. it is covering 37,000 miles split in two to help coordinate the search. it improved during the day. much of the area that has been searched is because of the large objects spotted by the chinese satellite. it was photographed around 75 miles from where an australian satellite spotted two large objects. a small aircraft also recorded seeing small notes floating in the ocean anded which a, includ palate. >> a number of other objects which were beyond distribute. strapping belts of different lengths. we tried to refine that yet

today with one of the new we will have a-- zealand aircraft. >> they remain hopeful that if there is anything out there, they will find it. they are getting much-needed help to planes that arrived from perth and japan. they are expected to join in the search tomorrow. the search continuing in the north in case the plane flew north to places like thailand and kazakhstan. >> we will check back with you as news warrants. live from bang caulk, thailand. >> the mystery is now in the third week, the longest search for a missing airliner in recent history. let's look at others. back in 2007, it took ten days to find the wreckage of a flight that went down in indonesia.

it took five days to find flight 447. it went down in the atlantic in 2009. after a crash of a jet into an indonesian volcano, it took 20 hours to reach that wreckage. >> breaking news on the crisis in ukraine. just this morning, a nato commander saying russia has deployed a huge force near the bord border, huge enough to spark fear with ukraine. we are there with the very latest. greg? >> reporter: more on that developing russian threat in a moment, but first news coming out of crimea itself. violent t yesterday, we watched a key ukrainian air force base and they have been holding the commander in custody.

there have been reports he had been released, but we have no confirmation. 189 military facilities have been eased by the russians and there a few hold outs and at least one naval vessel. meanwhile amid another pro russia rally, more word about russian troops at this time. the top military commander is quoted as saying troops are very, very sizable, very, very ready. that's in quotes. they represent not just a threat to u crape, but reach over to the border and a pro moscow statement next to the country. here in kiev, they gathered in independence square. that was the scene of the toppling of the old moscow regime. they are here to hear them talk about the threat. people here are concerned.

nations and joins us as always. >> glad to be with you. >> they say 20,000 russian soldiers on the border of e crane. what do you think putin has up his sleeve? >> still to put pressure on the interim government in kiev to negotiate some resolution that leaves open a government in kiev that is essentially subservient to commands and having to exit crimea, the population is closely divide and pro russian cultural religious groups in the eastern and southern part of the country still form a very large block. i think putin is demonstrating he has the military capability if he decides to use it. i don't think that's where he is. plan a remained and get a subservient government over and only plan b is further partition if you can't get that.

>> you have a restless former republic. let's take a look at the map. the area on the left of the ukraine with 30% russian speakers and the legislature said they want to join moscow. could they be next? >> this is hugely important. it's one of the frozen conflicts after the break up when a very small country and a very small piece broke off to form the republic. it had a large russian military base and former soviet troops. the numbers have come down, but it's a heavily ethnic russian area. it borders ukraine. the number of russian troops are much lower than in cold war days, the base facilities are there. russia can move thousands and thousands of troops and be on

the other side of ukraine. this is a case study of russians in the other republic for the former soviet union. the same about protecting them and their status applies in every other one of the soviet republics. that's why what happened is so important to all the rest. >> john mccain, the senator is likening what they are doing to adolph hitler's moves. taking a piece and a piece at a time and seeing how the world reacts. do you concur? >> that's what he's doing and he's winning. they are showing weakness and the obama administration is showing weakness. it's not something we can transform overnight. this is a reflection of at least five years of not paying attention. the europeans are projecting the request in 2008 to add ukraine and georgia to the clear path to membership. if there is a chance of stopping

putin, it's to demonstrate resolve politically and militarily and move nato forces into the baltic republic. i would consider bringing ukraine and georgia into nato. >> if ukraine and georgia brought to nato and say they reversed the decision and reinstalled the missile defense shield in poll apt and the czech republic, what do you think that would send to message? >> a message of strength. i would provide arms to the military and fork up the military. nobody should be under the ililation that washington and the european union are insignificant. let's consider something like barring the american banking system to all russian financial institutions. if you are serious about this, let's get serious with the sanctions. the chances of that? >> there is no chance under the

obama administration. we are really on the verge of an existential crisis for nato. if you can sit and watch armed aggressionses on the continent of europe, the europeans have been asking themselves if you are prepared to act. if i they are not, it would be difficult in this country to sustain the argument for a strong nato. >> john, always good to see you. thank you so much. >> clean up crews are working to contain a massive oil spill in galveston bay, texas. it is carrying nearly a million gallons of oil and leaks into the bay. it is a threat to the shore bird habitat on both sides of the channel since the bird's peak migration is approaching. the response is being coordinated by government

online engagement can spark global change. >> there new satellite images that may help searchers pinpoint flight 370. texas congressman said after more than two weeks since that plane's disappearance, time is truly of the essence. especially with so much of the initial search focused on the wrong spot. >> we wasted a week of precious time up in that region when all along it has been in the south i think with where the location is. it is hopeful that we have the third satellite imagery of debrew in the area. the good news is we can find it in the area where the debris is so we can get to the black box to find out what may have happened in this case.

northeast and they headed west. >> haven't the chinese done the same in terms of releasing images later than they could have? >> say that again? >> haven't the chinese held on to images longer than they could have? >> they had an image in the gulf of thailand they release and that turned out to start. the latest image that they didn't get until the middle of this last week of this wreckage or debris in the southern indian ocean. i don't know that you can really put the blame on them for wasting the first week. >> i asked you for your -- it's all good. what else were you able to accomplish with him in this interview. she very busy and plugged in and committed to getting answers for the families.

there were americans on board. >> there were. we talked to him and also to a former investigator at the ntsb. and the faa. the answer is they don't really have an answer. the free satellite images now that you have an american and french satellite all seeing something in the southern indian ocean that is hopeful. it could turn out to be nothing or they could find it. i also asked the chairman and the fbi that got ahold of the hard drive. have they been able to find anything there? he's not sure, but said they are awfully good. that could be something or the guy who deleted the files. >> it's clearly it's in the hands of the fbi at this point.
