12:01 pm
today a russian leader landed with a very strong message. it's a busy day so let's get too it. >> good monday afternoon to you and yours from the fox news deck. first today, one thing we're learning in the hunt for the missing malaysian airline jet is that the ocean is full of junk. search crews began the day with what they called their most promising lead yet. once again, disappointment. all they spotted was old fishing gear, and one more dead end. another frustrating set baeck for the families of the hundreds of people onboard who are no closer today than they were three weeks ago to finding out what happened their loved ones. despite the false leads the australian prime minister says search teams are nowhere near giving up. >> we can keep searching for quite some time to come, and we we will keep searching for quite
12:02 pm
some time, and as i said, the intensity of our search and the magnitude of our operations is increasing, not decreasing. >> the teams are still focusing on an enormous area in the indian ocean. about the size of the state of wyoming. that is kuala lumpur and here is the search area. investigators say radar information suggests that the jet went down somewhere around here. but more than a thousand people in ships and planes have not found a single piece of this wreckage, and, frankly, there's no signs they're about to. a gabrielle is with us. the malaysian governmenting changing the story. >> this means something, especially since minute of this investigation has been centered on the plane's captain. now, it was previously reported we're going to put it up on the screen -- but malaysia previously said the final communication was, all right, good night. now they're saying it was actually, good night, malaysian 370.
12:03 pm
now, that's a big difference. the last communication was actually more professional and more appropriate than what was previously reported. this is because when an airplane departs an air traffic controller's air space they're supposed to acknowledge and say their call sign and in this case they're saying they actually did that. the reason that's important is because malaysian 370 would have been the call sign, and air traffic controllers need to hear that because they're so many planes on the same frequency if you don't say your call sign you have no idea who you're speaking to. so they were being professional. >> it means they got it wrong, but we can't confirm that because they won't release the transcripts so we don't actually know this or anything else. three weeks later, we don't know anything. but they're still working on the search. we know that. >> this is a huge multination search, and today they had ten airplanes and 11 ships searching the year, which we're putting up here. the yellow area on this map, nearly 1300 miles west of perth. these other areas in gray were
12:04 pm
searched in recent weeks. ships found debris spotted over the weekend but the pieces had marine life, indicating they had been in the ocean for a while. now, none of them were actually related to flight 370. but more assets are expected to be moving into the area in the future, and this includes an australian ship that is going to have the u.s. pinger locater we have heard about in case they find any wreckage. >> the pinger has somewhere around five days, maybe a little longer, and that's it. >> depending on the batteries, yes. so short timeline now. >> thank you. the chinese government is telling passengers' relatives to stop lashing out at malaysian officials and instead focus on making funeral plans. you hear that? the chinese government is telling these victims' family members what they should be doing. today's editorial in a state newspaper is a huge shift for china after it allowed extremely rare public protests against the malaysian government. still the newspapers' words did not seem to calm furious families accuse the malaysians
12:05 pm
of hiding information about the missing jet. some relatives went to malaysia to find -- to demand answers. they waved banners that said things like, the murderer, and the families plane the airline and the government for the delay in the search they say could have cost lives. of course there's nod to support that. we understand their frustration. trace gallagher is in los angeles. how many of these families actually went to malaysia? >> reporter: several dozen, and they weren't just there to protest or show their anger. in fact many of the families went to buddhist temple outside of kuala lumpur to actually pray for their loved ones and also issued a statement thanking the people of malaysia, showing their appreciation for their kindness, as well as the volunteers that have worked so hard for them. but make no mistake about it, they have no problem with the malaysian people, but when it comes to malaysian authorities they are furious, and not just because of a lack of evidence, but what they call a total lack of information.
12:06 pm
listen. >> translator: when it comes to core issues they just say, sorry, this is under investigation, or i don't know about it, and was not responsible for this. when it came to key questions they just explained basic things about the airplane i can fine out on the internet as well or find them wherever. totally useless. >> reporter: it goes on and on. things like today messing up the last words that came from the cockpit for three weeks, as you can imagine in the minds of the families the malaysian authoriti' credibility is at an all-time low. >> the editorial from the chosen government in a state-run newspaper is interesting. tell us more. >> reporter: pretty blunt. what they're saying is telling the families not 0 to let anger get in the way of the facts or rationale and finally acknowledge their loved ones are dead and to prepare their funerals, and the families say that, look, they have acknowledged for the most part that their loved ones are not coming back, but they don't see it as irrational to want some
12:07 pm
evidence that the plane actually crashed into the indian ocean. and malaysian authorities for their part say they are also trying their best. listen. >> we find ourself in difficult position and i repeat the question that the families want answered, the question we simply do not have the answer to. namely where their loved ones are and where is mh370. >> reporter: the answer may not come for years. air france, they found wreckage in five days, didn't find the black boxes for almost two years. >> and air france, that one, the searchaire for the jet was smaller than the smallest of all the search areas through which we have been during this search. they have not found one thing related to this crash. not one. and our next guess on this subject matter is going to tills they mail be searching the wrong
