that the shooter himself is dead at this point. so, right now still a lockdown. the fort hood web site still says this is not a test to shelter in place, keep your doors closed. it is still an active crime scene, if you will. and the hospitals at fort hood, both the medical center there as well as local medical centers are tending to the wounded. we are told that at least 8 ambulances arrived through the gates of fort hood shortly after the shooting began, shepard. >> jennifer, as we have both reported throughout the evening, jana winter is reporting that yesterday's report on fox foxnews.com and today's reality at fort hood are not related. i want to read to you what was on foxnews.com exclusively as of yesterday and i quote: the alert whose legitimacy was confirmed by law enforcement officials say that a man identified as booker had told friends of his, quote: intention to commit jihad, unquote. booker who is also known as mohammed abdullah hasan was

person that may have spread. well, the doctors an official from the hospital there, the medical center in temple, texas are coming to the microphones to update us as we have the information so let's listen in now. >> we are ready whenever they are. >> if you are all are ready, this is dr. glen coutsman, the chief officer. in the doctor's jacket is dr. harry constantine know who is our chairman of surgery. >> good evening. at about 5:05 this evening, we were notified by officials from fort hood that there had been a shooting incident over there and we began preparation to accept patients. we so far have received three patients who have been transferred that are here in
5:47 pm
our facility. we have three more that are in route. i'm sorry, there are four patients that are equally here now and two more that are in route. they have had a variety of injuries we have been treating, ranging from gunshot wounds that involved extremities, abdomen, chest and neck. these patients are receiving treatment right now. and we are expecting two more to arrive shortly. transported by both air and land. the two that are coming that are preparing to go directly to the operating room in anticipation of some very needed surgery. we have all of our support staff have been activated. and we have ample resources to take care of anymore patients that need to be transferred over. but at this time we don't anticipate additional
5:48 pm
patients being transferred over from fort hood at this time. so, we are prepared to answer any questions. if we can give you any additional information. >> those that are here now, do you know their conditions? >> yes, their conditions range from stable to quite critical. >> do you know if they were soldiers? >> i don't have that, ma'am. >> how many men and how many women, do you know? >> i can't even give you those specifics, i'm sorry. >> what about the rest of the people when you -- maybe 14. where are they? >> i have none of that information, ma'am. we accepted these patients transferred after they had been evaluated and taken care of over in killeen. we really didn't render any immediate care at the scene or anything like that. >> are any of you here in
5:49 pm
2009. >> similarities? >> i would say so. there is a lot of unknowns early on and it creates some logistical problems in how you plan for this kind of event. we continually practice for mass casualty events. we have a command center that we run practice drills. i'm pleased to report that we were well prepared for that it always takes a little while to figure out how many people are coming and where they are coming from. but we are amply staffed. we had our surgeons, operating rooms, everything opened up well before any of these patients arrived. >> how often do you guys run those and when was the last time? >> we run those every few months. it's been three or four months since we had our last one. that's a routine kind of thing that we prepare for. >> multiple gunshot wounds? >> i honestly can't tell you the exact extent of those. i did not take care of any
5:50 pm
of those myself. dr. constantine know may be able to give you more specifics on that. >> basically they were both -- both individuals gunshots as well as a couple with multiple. >> i apologize, can you recap again some of the numbers, please? >> sure. we were first notified shortly after 5:00 this evening there was a shooting incident that occurred over on the fort. we opened up our command center at that time in anticipation. and over the next couple hours we have received now a total of four patients that have been transferred to our facility. two more are in route i understand right now. and we are preparing to take those immediately to the operating room because they have some very very severe injuries so that is kind of where we are with this. >> are you releasing conditions at this point? >> the conditions range anywhere from quite stable to critically injured.
5:51 pm
>> the two that are coming now, were they in another facility before they were brought over here? >> i believe they are being transferred directly from the darnell emergency facilities. >> >> you can go over again what their injuries were? >> basically, it's a variety. injuries to the chest, to the abdomen, to the extremities, and then injury to the neck. on the various patients that we have seen. >> you said these are soldiers or you don't know whether they are soldiers? >> we don't have any specifics at this time. >> okay. why were these patients transferredtime. >> why were these patients transferred here? >> we're a level one trauma center. we actually have the resources and capacity to take care of these critically injured patients. >> were the most critical patients brought here? >> as far as we know, yes. >> and i would anticipate with a large number of patients
5:52 pm
arriving short period of time, the emergency facilities there were anxious to have some help quickly, and we were available, and they know that we're always open to help them out. >> i believe one of you was addressing, someone was here, when this happened previously? >> we both were. >> what goes through your head when you know it's happened again? >> it's, my response was this was another sad day for central texas. >> some of these patients, they were probably brought from ft. hood straight here. have you been able to get in touch with their family on base? >> we have not reached out to any families yet. i know that we have, our media folks have made arrangements for them or the contact number for them. and people are fielding some of those calls. i'm not really aware of some of their family members have
5:53 pm
arrived here yet. >> are you anticipating that they're still on base? >> that their families are still on base? i would assume so. i really don't know the specific names and the family relations that are over there. >> did you all treat any, from the previous incident, did you all treat any injured from that incident? >> you mean the -- >> we had quite a few patients. >> i think we had 11, i'm not sure. but we had it quiquite a few. i can't remember the exact number, but it was quite a few, i remember that. >> you said that the conditions ranged from stable to quite critical. do you know how many were quite critical? >> i really can't tell you that specific number. >> a lot of, a lot of the patients are being, are
5:54 pm
undergoing continual evaluation so that will change over the course of time, i'm sure. >> and we will give an update, probably in another couple hours. we can give you a little bit more information about the specific injuries and. >> can you say why you don't expect any additional patients? >> that's the information that we're receiving right now is that they're not anticipating that they're going to transfer anymore over, although, i suspect that could change as well, just depending on the condition of the patients they're treating over there. >> from darnell? >> yes, ma'am. [ phone ringing ] >> any other questions for us at this time? >> could you say your names and titles again? >> as we go, we're wrapping things up, it was established originally as scott & white facility and the only level one

trauma the center between there and dallas. four patients transported there in various ways. ranging from stable to extremely critical. gunshot wounds to the extremities. the abdomen and the neck. and two more patients about to be transferred over from the medical facility at ft. hood and they go straight into surgery. if you've got copd like me... ...hey breathing's hard. know the feeling? copd includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

three minutes before the hour. i'm shepard smith and we're waiting for a news conference from ft. hood in texas. you know that 14 people have been injured. four are now did, including the shooter who's been identified to us throughout the evening of jennifer griffin as ivan lopez, said to be in his 30s and a man who was a truck driver on post until according to authorities he shot and killed four people
5:58 pm
and left 14 injured. so many people across the nation have ties to ft. hood in one way or another. and one is nina easton. she is a washington editor for fortune magazine and a contributor on our politics program special report. my understanding your son's an army ranger and was there when this went down. >> caller: yes, hey, shep, my heart goes out to the families of these victims. it's just crushing to me. my son is an army ranger. he, he's perfectly safe. he was leaving a day at work at about 4:45. leaving his post. and when he heard chaos break out, sirens and so forth got to his house off base and was told to shelter in place. and that's what he's been doing. but, you know, shep, the thing that really strikes me is that my son, he's only been in for a year. he originally had orders to go to afghanistan, which we really
5:59 pm
worried about, those orders have since changed. but you think about the level of fear that parents and family go through with their kids just being deployed into battle zones. and you have to worry, now we have to worry about them just being on base in america. i was there going on special report in 2009 when major nidal hasan killed 13 people, a mass murder at ft. hood. and it's really, it's really a traumatic to me. >> well, for any parent or friend how could it be anything but. i'm so glad your son is there. thank him for his service to us. good to talk to you. >> caller: thanks, shep. >> we're waiting for this news conference to come from ft. hood. it's our understanding that they'll be holding it right there at the main gate. why would a man do such a thing. of course we'll be live
