here's the first lady. >> just four months after that explosion, he finished the half marathon in a wheelchair. four months of the explosion. on the one-year anniversary of his injury, he ran a mile on his prosthetic. over the next few years dan stayed on active duty while in the mayy, earning medals in swimming and running events at the warrior game and completing the new york city marathon. and today, four and a half years after his injuries, dan is proud to wear another one of our nation's uniforms and that is of team u.s.a. [applause] >> and i also got to meet dan's sister, who stayed by his side every single minute of his recovery. and she was an important part of that recovery, and she is a terrific woman, a under herself, and i'm glad to hear she is doing well. in sochi, dan inspired all again by come peteing in the 15k biathlon and the one kilometer sitting cross-country sprint. dan has come a long way in the four years we met, and i know his story and the stories of all of olympians and pair olympians -- parra olympians are nowherer in fine issuedded. so keep it up. this is only the beginning. many of you were here four years ago and you told us you'd be back, and you're back. soil know you're already getting ready for the next four year, but in the meantime, we look forward to all that you're going to do in this country and around

we're there to support them, and as we learn more about what happened and why, we're going to make sure we're doing everything in our power to keep our troops safe and keep our troops strong, not just on the battlefield but also when they come home. they've done their duty and they're an inspiration. they've made us proud they put on their uniform and take care of us, and we have to make sure when they come home, we take care of them. in that spirit of unity, i what brings us here today -- >> the president speaking briefly about the tragedy at fort hood. who is responsible for what the president just described? a married father, an iraq war veteran who had been stationed at fort hood for a few weeks before he started shooting his fellow soldiers. that the word investigators who frying to find out what led to another shooting spree. officials confirm the gunman was this man, army specialist, eye

ivan lopez. he shot innocent people, moving from one building to the next. witnesses described warning sirens, wail, and panicked people climbing out windows to get away. raidey reportings: >> two victims with gunshot wounds. there's one walking around conscious and breathing. upper rib cage. >> just one of the victims. officials say the rampage finally ended win a military policewoman stood up to the gunman. >> he was approaching her 0 feet. put hi hands up, then reached under his jacket, pulled out the nine mil, and she pulled out her weapon, and then she engaged, and then he put the weapon to his head and he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

>> official says lopez killed three people and wounded 16 before he killed himself. now investigators are looking into the soldier's pennsylvania. they say he was -- past. in m-year-old father from putter reek to. served four months in iraq. he self-reported a traumatic brain injury after he got become. but military officials say he was not wounded in combat. they say he was taking medication for mental health issues, including depressing and anxiety. investigators are also looking into whether the deadly rampage started with something as simple as an argument. we start our team fox coverage with rick leventhal live at fort hood. anything, rick, on a possible motive? >> well, not from the army. we're expecting to hear from the base commanding officer in just under an hour. we have heard from friends in pork rico, the home of ivan

lopez who said he was deeply affected by the death of his mother in november and had lost his grandfather a few weeks before that. hough that might explain shooting fellow soldiers here at the base, it just seems beyond belief. again, we could learn more from the army, but they're no question that they're looking very close live at this man's mental history. being treated for mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders, was apparently on met craig, and -- medication and was not authorized to bring a gun on to the base. he had purchased the weapon off the base, within the last few days, according to some sours, and -- according to sources and had not registered the weapon with fort hood. so he was not supposed to bring it here but we did, opening fire. >> that community has been through so much. have you talked to some folks? looks like we lost our connection with rick leventhal, who is live at fort hood. the service has been

disconnected. he mentioned we're waiting to hear from the official thursday at fort hood, and when that happens we'll take you there. doctors expect all of the injured victims in the hospital to pull through. but some well fay some very touch -- face some very tough recovery from serious bullet wounds. we're starting to learn who the victims were. >> as you know three of them died from the indent. i spoke with one of their moms on the phone a few minuteses ago and she is heartbroken. her son is 37-year-old sergeant timothy owens, counselor for the army and had just been married last august. his mom told me she was terrified when she saw on tv that there had been a shooting at her son's base so she tried to call him. when she cooperate reach him, she reached out to his wife instead. here's what happened. >> she said, oh, he just in the hospital and we don't have any reports or anything to tell you.

but when we find out we'll let you know. well, an hour or so later she called me become and says, mom, i'm sorry, i told you a lie. he's gone. so, i said, oh no; don't tell me that. >> well, mary tells me her son, sergeant owens, served 11 years in the army and planned to stay in for a career. he had just signed up for six more years. the names of other victims have that been released. >> machine served throughout america's long longest war, came back to friendly soil and is killed. what are doctors saying about those in hospital. >> the 16 injured, several of them were taken to the military hospital that i right the on the pace, and others were moved to another hospital. now, scott and white memorial in temple, texas, took nine of the injured. this is video from yesterday.

the of them are in critical condition with gunshot injuries cluing wounds to the spine, neck, and abdomen. two will require further surgery but they expect them to survive. >> seems surreal when they arrive here. they relayed some details, but i know this is an ongoings investigate and i would hate to say something that might be a problem for the investigation, so i won't make any specific comments, but it was just a feeling of shock and just being in a surreal moment. >> now, just in the past couple hours some of the other names are starting to come in. we confirmed major patrick miller was one of the injured. he, according to local albany paper was shot in the the abdomen and is expected to survive. >> all of those most critically

injured at the level one trauma center. if you complete alive you normally stay that way. those doctors perform modern miracles and thank god. some of the 'same journalist were back on the scene today. one of the reporters to get there, we'll talk to him about what he saw yesterday and all that has happened, at fort hood. i'm shepard smith in new york.

stress disorder. he says the doctors never officially diagnosed if with ptsd. chris mcguinness i a reporter. first i want -- let good there now. he said he went to fort hood as soon as word protect out yesterday. hi said in the production he had been there in 2009. i was misinformed. he was not. put he was the yesterday. what was happening when you got there? >> when we first got to the scene it was eerily quiet on post. the local media kind of rushed to the parkinglet area outside the visitor center, which is where every i corralled now. and at the time there were very few of us. we did not see many personnel outside, gradually we did begin to see some military police come out. eventually we started to see more military mission personnel come out to the front gate and the visitor center where they began stopping cars and searching them --

>> you were there for the news conference last night, a little after 4:30. do you have a sense from your reporting yet how long this shooting continued? >> we were told by the commanding general lanight that the incident was only about 15 minutes. >> this soldier, as i understand it -- he went from building to building. where did he start? >> i believe he started in the medical battalion building, the hawker building. he then went to a building next to it, a transportation building. at some point outside -- i'm sorry -- >> go ahead. >> okay. at some point the officials said he went out to his car, where he was firing shots, and then got back out of the car. he was eventually confronted by a female military police officer

and then turned the gun on himself. >> from your reporting, the began with some sort of dispute. is that what they believe? between this man who was a truck driver, and then someone necessary -- someone else in transportation? >> they did not say exactly the nature of the argument. they said there was a possibility there was an argument before the shooting. they did not say when that occurred or what the nature of it was. >> chris, fort hood, you have been covering it a while and they just seem to have just horrible stuff happening to great people. i wonder how they're holding up as a group? >> well, you know, this community has definitely suffered loss. not just from these two incidents but a number of soldiers who died in combat in the wars in iraq and afghanistan, were al from fort hood. and even though the trial for the 2009 shooter is over and he has now been sentenced to death,

the community is still feeling the reverberations from that, even today, and to have this happen yet again, there is a sense of people are asking, how could this happen again? and want more answers as to why, and what this man's motives were. >> i'm sure they do. chris mcguinness, a reporter for a local newspaper. thank you so much. it's easy to say that to conflate these two, to make comparisons between what happened in 2009 and i think at it important to remember that they're not similar. in 2009, major nidal hasan went on aing my that was against our nation and the people who fight for it. in this case, it sounds as if there was a dispute between a man and another who happened to work at a military facility. they're different things, neither is less tragic than the other but they're different. there's new information about the weapon the soldier used and

an update now on the fort hood shooter. we lost our connection with rick from scene and now i'm informed he has new information about the reporting on where the shooter may or may not have bought the guck. -- the gun. >> reporter: in 2009 it was conformed that major nidal hassan bought a store he used at a store called guns galore in a

store a couple miles from the army base. we have a crew at the store. the owner is not but we spoke with an employee speaking on behalf of the owner who confirms that were in contact with the fbi last night about this possible sale of the weapon. they wouldn't confirm the store sole the weapon but they did confirm they spoke to the fbi and the atf was there they don't want to confirm the weapon was sold at the store because they don't want to get in the middle of the investigation. but guns galore sold the win to nadal hasan and hey have sold the weapon to ivan lopez. an update on the search for the missing malaysian airlines jet. australiays prime minister says the investigation has become the most difficult in human history. search teams again scoured the southern indian ocean for any

signs of flight 370. aircraft and ships folk can youd on a search area roughly the size of this -- think of this -- a search area of the size of the state of utah and off the coast of western australia. crews say the weather was descent with a few miles of visibility but they have not pulled up one single thing from that 777. as we have reported, time is certainly running out before the plane's black book stops sending signals and that could make it nearly impossible to locate because it's so deep. the malaysian prime minister today vowed he will not rest until answers are found. trace gallagher i live. this search is an enormous challenge. >> reporter: the reason they keep moving the search they keep continuing to analyze the satellite data as well as the capables of the airplane itself, but a big part of the change is because they're using these mathematical models to calculate

the wind speed as well as the ocean currents. so, in other words, it's mostly an educated guess, and even though the malaysian prime minister vows never end the search, those who are actually conducting the search say at some point in time, they need to go back to the drawing board. that was kind of the line of questioning today to the malaysian civil aviation chief. listen to this. >> think it would be bad for the families to be more honest and say we're not going to finds the black box? >> no. no. we'll find it. >> what will you be saying to the families tonight? >> don't give up hope. >> but at it awfully hard to offer hope when you have almost zero evidence. in fact, zero evidence. after nearly four weeks. >> in fact, they don't know where to look. that's a fact. some of the families of chinese passengers are getting pushback from their own government. started yesterday and now there's more. >> there is more because the chinese families, like all the families of the passengers on the flight, have been very

critical of the malaysian authorities and for the chinese government, calling on the malaysian authorities to speed up the search as well as to give out more information. well, that angered malaysia so now the chinese government is backing off, trying to sport the families as well as not damage what has been a very good reelingship with malaysia. but now a china ambassador has called some of the family members viewpoints radical, extensive, and irresponsible, and the girlfriend of missing u.s. passenger phillip wood goes even further saying, giving the families of the chinese passengers malaysian monitors is, quoting here, like having baby-sitters for a bunch of spoiled brats throwing a tantrum. all the chinese are doing is hurting themselves. they're interfering with the investigation. of course in def of the chinese families and all the other families they have gotten some very bad information.

any violent tendencies. jennifer griffin is here. what else are military officials saying about the suspect? >> what is interesting, if you look at his facebook page, he was clearly a huge fan of the heavy metal band, slip knot. that was part of his facebook name. ivan slip knot. we have learned from officials sources he transferred from fort bliss, texas in february. i'm told he has at least three dependent children. he wife was questioned by authorities last night. questions are raised by officials why he remained an e-4 specialist. that raises some red flags. >> a very experienced soldier, had a one year deployment to the sinai. with the national guard, and then had a four-month deployment in iraq. the last four months at the end of 2011.

britain's queen elizabeth ii visited the vatican to meet for the first time with pope francis, and they had also gift exchange. ey put them up on the monster wall. got her easter bonnet on. the queen's husband husband, prince phillips, joined the might, and in true kim jong-un style, looking at something, the queen and prince phillip and the pope, all the monarchs gave the
