>> reporter: we're hearing a lot about that fight here on the post this morning. let me show you new pictures we're just getting in of sergeant -- of specialist ivan lopez. he was a family man, originally from puerto rico, a musical family, a church-going family, was in the marching band there. neighbors say he was happy, that there was no outstanding marks as far as military career was concerned. but, yes, we are hearing about that possible fight before he opened fire allegedly on the post. the lieutenant general mark milley commented yesterday. take a listen. >> there was mentioned yesterday there may have been a verbal altercation with another soldier or soldiers and there is a strong possibility that that in fact immediately preceded theç shooting. >> some of the soldiers here on the post were exchanging text messages saying they thought there

was some sor altercation with a superior officer about taking some paid time off. i think they were saying he was upset because that wasn't granted. as far as mental state is concerned, you mentioned at the top of the show, that drug cocktail, a mixture of drugs we're hearing he was taking, some antidepressants for depression, anxiety, ambien to help him sleep and was being evaluated for ptsd. a mixture of different types of drugs we're being told. as far as the gun isç concerned, he bought that on march 1 from a store called guns galore. it's here in killeen, texas. there's a picture of the gun shop. it's also the same shop, which is very chilling, that the fort hood shooter back in 2009 bought his weapons as well. lopez's gun was bought legally. it just wasn't registered here on the post. so, therefore, he wasn't allowed to have it on wednesday here on the post.

>> ainsley, thank you very much. we had one of the trauma surgeons on this program yesterday. he said he thought they were going to be upgrading the conditions of some of those who were injured and taken to the hospital. what is the status of the folks who have been hurt? >> i'll tell you a few things we're learning this morning. i got off the phone with the hospital 30 minutes ago. they said theç nine patients sent to the trauma one center, five have been released now, which is great news. four have been upgraded to serious condition. three were in critical condition yesterday. she says she thinks all of them are tpw-g to -- going to be okay. they are in serious condition which is better news than three. of the three killed on the post, one of them, his name is being released. he was army sergeant timothy owens. his mother found out the news. she is a 77-year-old news that lives in illinois. found out the news when she got a call from his wife and she said, quote, mom, i want to tell you how sorry

iç am. tim is gone. >> that is heartbreaking. >> back to you. >> meanwhile, what else can we tell you about this soldier? number one, i was shocked to see the general come out and say there is strong evidence he had a medical history that indicates an unstable psychiatric or psychological conditions. you've got to wonder is there any system set up within the army where if you're an officer or a colleague or lower-rank, high rank, you say i'm worried about this guy, worried about my safety, worried about his safety, where you can get in. >> the commander said they are not sure of the motive up to this point though there are indications on the facebook page in terms of purchase of the gun on march 1, a facebook post that included some, he alluded to theç devil. he said i just lost my inner peace, full of hatred. i think this time the devil will take me. i was robbed last night,

>> it's learning to be better, not learning fast enough. (v.a. and the military.the the v.a. has been behind on mental health care for quite sometime. is catching up, hiring more specialists because it is a need that has grown more apparent. within the military you've got guys whrof -- who have done multiple tours still there, some who are dealing with ptsd. you want them to seek assistance without creating stigmas within the unit that they are not capable of doing their job. you've got to have that balance of encouraging folks to seek the help they need while ensuring it doesn't hurt their career so they can continue to be the great soldier they are. >> without risking a lack of freedom, when you have someone, a veteran, that has a history of mental difficulties, ptsd perhaps, in this specific case ivan lopez did, they knew it, shed -- should they beç tracking things like a facebook. march 1 there was a gun

purchase, march 3 there was a facebook post. those things seem to be hooked together in terms of what then happened. >> usually they are. i don't purport to speak on behalf of the military but i'm a commander in the national guard unit and my job is to monitor soldiers who seems to be going through a process. you don't make the whole unit aware of it but you may be tracking folks going through issues. the command is required and you want to be more aware of the behavior. did they track every single facebook post? i don't think so. i think that is why the army trains and the military at large every member to be a sensor to identify signs of aç fellow soldier and let people know about it if you think there are particular stressors because you can't know everything a soldier is doing. you don't want to stigmatize that soldier inside the unit. >> let's talk about guns. the shooter goes in, kills three, seriously injures and wounds 16. he was stopped by a brave military police officer, a female, with a gun. should more personnel be armed on these campuses?

>> i think so. i wouldn't go so far as saying conceal and carry for everyone on post for reasons, having served in command climate, maintaining discipline. that may not be what you need. but more officers carrying on a regular basis on a concerted rotation. everywhere you go where everyone knows everyone is not armed that makes everyone more vulnerable. in this particular case hadç someone been carrying at this particular facility maybe someone would have been stopped. most americans don't realize it's a gun-free zone in many ways on these posts that weapons are locked up in the arms lockers unless they're training and that makes some people vulnerable. >> soft target. pete hegseth, thanks for being with us this morning. coming up, the story is also disturbing. a d.c. mosque with ties to a 9/11 hijacker has been reaching out to american prisoners for a decade. the man who blew the lid off the whole thing joining

>> then a close call inside a florida c.v.s. store. everything seems calm inside as a woman pushing her shopping cart in the front of the counter. but just as she backs up, a car comes crashing through the front of the store narrowly missing her. the 84-year-old driver was backing out of her parking spot when she hit the gas. both ladies walked away with just a few bruises. i love this story. every parent need to listen to this. how do you get your teenager to clean their room? this father moved all the stuff to the driveway. a military dad in georgia taking that extreme step to get his 17-year-old daughter motivated to keep that room a wholeç lot cleaner. her bed, her bookcase, her desk all for the world to see in that driveway. there was also a sign that red haley room, move to the driveway. clean it up next time. >> i had enough of it. i picked up her belongings and set her room in the driveway. my intention was to surprise her a little bit

rampage, according to authorities on wednesday. he killed three people, then turned the gun on himself and then wounded 16 others. we're also learning, as you mentioned, about the possible motive, maybe a fight took -- he had a fight with some other soldier just before he went on that shooting rampage. this is what lieutenant general mark millie had to say. >> it was mentioned yesterday there may have been a verbal altercation with another soldier or soldiers and there is a strong possibility that that, in fact, immediately preceded the shooting. >> reporter: look at this picture. this is the place that he bought the gun, that .45 caliber smith & wesson, called guns galore. he bought it march 1. what's interesting is this is the same store that the 2009 fort hood shooter bought his weapons and the owner of this store says another one of the terrorist, private first class abdo, tried to buy a lot of gun powder there. it was alarming, he said, and so

the owner stopped him from doing so. that was in 2011. this as more and more military members like captain hegseth want soldiers to be allowed to carry guns on to bases. >> more staff duty nco's, more officers carrying on a regular basis, on a concerted rotation. anywhere you go where everybody knows everybody is not armed, that makes everyone obviously more vulnerable. in this particular case, had someone else been carrying at that facility, maybe something would have stopped. do i think there need to be more people equipped and armed to do that? yes. >> reporter: brian, steve and elisabeth, he bought it legally, but he wasn't allowed to have it on the post. >> that's right. he was able to murder three people and over a dozen were injured. what's the status of their injuries right now? >> reporter: i called the hospital just before our newscast this morning. they said out of the nine patients taken to the level one trauma is center, five have been

two female journalists for the associated press and now one is dead. they were sitting in their car in afghanistan when an afghan police officer pulled his ak .47 on them. a.p. photographer died instantly. you can see their pictures here. and then a.p. reporter kathy gannon was hit twice and is in stable condition. they spent years together covering stories in afghanistan. that police officer is under arrest. we'll bring you more information on that story as we get it. in the meantime, back here at home, dramatic surveillance video showing an 11-year-old boy running into traffic in detroit and then tragically getting hit by a truck. luckily he is going to be okay. but this morning, the guy who hit him is fighting for his life. 54-year-old steve was brutally attacked by a group of men when he got out of his truck to try to help the boy. listen to this. >> they started punching him and stuff like that.

>> they said you're gone. i said look, i have a first amendment right. as long as i'm adhere to go security protocol, i have that right. we ultimately did okay in the legal scheme of it. but the problem here is our troops are sacrificing so much overseas, they're coming back and still sacrificing their rights, not privileges, their rights here at home. >> i want to tell you what the army spokesperson says, john cornyn wright, about the ban. he says if you're a soldier and live in the barracks, you have to store your weapon in the arms room. where is the arms room? >> it's not close to your barracks. that's for sure. what happens is when you come on base, if do you have a personal weapon, say you live on base, you have to store it in a locked area. but when seconds count, that locked area is minutes away. >> what could you do now to take action? i know you're running for congress personally. so you can change things. but if you're on base wearing camouflage on a daily basis, wearing uniforms for a living, what can you do? >> that's the problem. there is the growing divide between who makes the decisions and what actually happens and

who does the job. i can't tell everybody in uniform right now to carry your gun on base because they'll all get in trouble for it. it's ridiculous. but we need to fix this legislatively and say now it's on you. there has been three shootings on a military base. the job of our elected officials, the job much our senior military commanders say enough is enough. start carrying a gun on base. second amendment. i stand firmly behind it. >> as you look at this guy, the shooter, you find out that the general says he basically had emotional problems, was on psychiatric drugs to a degree, and with two or three different type drug, including ambien, which is over the counter. do you guys know people who you work with and serve with who could be a threat to you? >> not generally. but sometimes yes. the problem here is the v.a. and the way our troops are cared for when they come home. this is a big issue in connecticut for me, which i'm address not guilty my campaign. but our troops are undercared for. absolutely undercared for. when they go out and come back from combat, you can go into a

home. they understand the difference between war and home of the secondly, we want to make sure that no one is associating ptsd with this kind of violence. it's very rare. but one has to be sensitive to that. my worry is a lot of soldiers will see stigma with that, that if i'm going to see a base doctor, i'm going to be seen as a risk. brian, i know how hard you work to help these soldiers get their help. what i get concerned about is do we have enough psychologists in the armed services and as they're leaving, as they're making this transition out, are we helping them to make that transition? that's where we clearly have more work to do. >> tell me about your legislation that you're pushing forward. >> well, we need to overall america's mental health system. i'm telling you, it's broken. we don't have enough psychologist, psychiatrists. there is barriers for parents to get involved in their kids' cases. we don't have enough hospital beds. in the 1950s, we had half a million hospital beds and

150 million in population. now we've got 38, 40,000 hospital beds in this country. nowhere near enough to help people in acute crisis. you saw what happened with a senator who couldn't get a bed for his son. i'm not talking about housing people like we used to in asylums. i'm saying, when someone is in acute crisis, let's help them out. our bill also would change some of this silly rule within medicaid that says you can't see two doctors in the same day. who came up with that? so if a pediatrician refers you over to say you need to see a psychiatrist, you got to wait another day? are you kidding me? >> that one day could be deadly. >> right. >> and also because the health care system and how much is covered will be key. >> it is. i know the affordable care act is pushing for parody in this. but we don't have enough beds. we also need more training for policemen of how to handle these crisis situations before they get to violence. sadly, the biggest psychiatric facilities are cook county jail in chicago area, los angeles

good morning. >> good morning, friend. good morning, elisabeth, steve and brian. we got in our monthly jobless numbers and they're good enough, they continue to show growth and jobs added. 192,000 jobs added. a little less than what the analysts expected of 200,000. you still have obviously the labor force participation rate not so great. you still have people frustrated. the other piece of good news in this jobs report is that the prior two months were revised slightly higher. so another 37 jobs were added to january and february. so that's good news there. >> and we need more jobs created. it's interesting, we had michael lewis on earlier in the week, nicole. his book called "flash boys" had quite an allegation, that wall street where you're working, is rigged. >> you know, it's a tough one to stomach. when i talk to the traders on wall street, there is a few things that they would say. they would say that high frequency traders do have a bit

so i could review the 2 d version. this is the 9th film in the series. this movie takes place after the avengers. captain america still trying to adjust to modern society. he's fighting a new villain called the winter soldier. this is the best marvel film to date, hands down. they blend practical effects efs with cgi effects. the action is insane. they expand on scarlet johansson and samuel l. jackson's character. this is not for young kids. this is a very, very violent pg-13 movie. i wanted to make sure parents knew that. i gave it 4 1/2 out of five. geeking out. i highly recommend seeing it. it's almost like a christopher nolan movie. getting up to the "dark knight rises" level. i sat down with chris evans and there are eight movies prior to this.
