control room, the folks that work there always are -- they never make mistakes. >> never. >> must be so fun being perfect. >> it is. it really is. >> i know it's great being real on "the real story." have a fast weekend. i'm gretchen. here's shep. >> military leaders say some of the victims of the fort hood shooting rampage sacrificed their lives. we're hearing the stories of their selfless courage under fire. we'll talk with the wife of one of the seriously injured victims who was just about to deploy to afghanistan. >> the jam man's family is speaking out -- the gunman's, i should say. the german is another person with another problem. today we're talking about the gunman's family, and they're giving new clues about what turned a soldier into a killer. let's get to it.
12:01 pm
>> good friday afternoon, mercifully. first from the deck this afternoon, the underwater search has begun for the black boxes for the missing malaysia airlines jet, according to officials in australia who say an australian ship is towing this u.s. pinger locater downtown water to listen for -- underwater to listen for signals. analysts say picking up the signal will not be easy. the reporter needs to be within a mile of the flight recorder to identify the pings. this in a search area officials say i this size of utah. the head of the search effort says planes and ships are still scanning the surface of the indian ocean, looking for debris from the jet -- actual live the middle of the night there but they will when the sun rises in three hours. he says the search could still be helpful. >> the visual search may give us wreckage that is still on the surface. and that will provide an ability
12:02 pm
to further narrow the search area. >> but the search team leader says without any wreckage investigators will not be able to narrow the search. analysts say investigators could have just two days before the battery dies on the s and the devices go silent. batteries actually die on a decline. these batteries not immediately. lea is with us. this finger locator, when the batteries die it's worthless. >> it's true. the pinger locator is searched to search a mall area within a known crash location for the black boxes. today they started to deploy the pinger locator. we spoke to the company that makes translators and they they let us listen to what the ping sounds like. >> okay. ping, ping, ping, ping, ping,
12:03 pm
ping, ping. >> so here's hough the pinger locater work. it's tethered behind a ship that trolls the area and searches at less than five miles per hour. listen to the sound we just heart at a department of 20,000 feet. it has to be within range of the pingers so it's key to get close to the area where the crash happened to detect this, especially since the range of the ping is determined by environment in the ocean. >> how did he search go to today? >> they found debris today but nothing related to the missing 777. here's the area they were searching today. north of the previous search area seen here in yell low. today they searched 11 miles informant of perth. 14 aircraft and 11 ships, including the australian ship that is towing the pinger locator and a british ship with similar technology. the agency coordinating the search says today's search was based on new data, and they're
12:04 pm
basing this information on things like satellite data, radar data, and aircraft performance to kind of guess where the plane may have ended up. >> it is a guessing game. thank you. >> as you probably know, laws require commercial planes with pingers in the black boxes so that searchers can locate them in case of any crash like this. but it's not a miracle device. the battery there lasts for only so long. about 30 days, sometimes as much as 45. and weather, boat noise 0, silt on the bottom of the sea, can drown out the sound of the pings. but even if it does die search teams could fine it. crews located the black box of the sunken air france jet two years after the flight crashed in the atlantic ocean. j.p. is a former commercial airline pilot and anary -- aeronautical engineer. >> is a getting less and less
12:05 pm
plausible. the picker ding pinger operators in a cone so you have a limitation there you have this yeah, 100,000 square miles, for god's sake. if you trolled every day, 24 hours a day, for one year, with that device, it would take you one year to cover 20 square miles of this entire -- it's just -- rather, the 100,000. it's just a huge area, and the fact that the pinger is -- okay, a lithium ion battery, going to last maybe 45 days. but again, air france 447 was not found with the finger. it was found with a deep sea submersible. the blue torpedo like object they dropped in to troll the bottom. the area is so massive and any edition with debris -- debris can coo be a thousand miles from where the air craft went down. >> a lot of storms out there.
12:06 pm
a typhoon. >> one problem is it's 20th 20th century technology in an aircraft that is $240 million. this flight data reporter and pinger goes back to 1950. the batteries, 1990. so, we're talking about reactive. the airplane peninsulas to crash before we start -- away has to cash before we start locking locking -- whether it's an abnormal climb at some altitude and it's then triggered and the agencies are aware via satellite. we have a problem. and now it's instantous and i have a transmission that gives me a location. we're dealing with old technology and it should -- 20 years we have been talking about getting more pro-active, and that is an emergency locater transmitter that can use the
12:07 pm
satellites, bounce off them. >> that technology is now available and it's my understanding that something like that modified to work on a jet would cost the amount of an in-flight entertainment center. >> a canadian company produces it right now, and if that system that the company had in this aircraft right now, the transmission costs would have been $3,000 to the satellite. and we wouldn't be having this -- air france was $100 million plus in costs to search for the wreckage. what's this going to cost? you have a thousand families standing by waiting. that ises grievous. that is egregious. that is horrible. that's the point. an air craft loss is a material good. you have insurance claims. people? no. this is entirely different. the longer this goes on, with all of the misinformation from malaysian government, which has been atrocious from the get-go, this is bad. we're dealing with old technology and we ought to be
12:08 pm
stepping up to the plate, worrying less on what's on the entertainment system for the passengers and what there is for their safety. >> maybe this will do it. we're learning more about the gunman in the fort hood shooting. a friend now says the shooter was angry with the army. he says it all stemmed from the death of the gunman's mother. and the funeral that followed. you'll learn why the family says that death, they believe, could have made him snap. hang on. you are about to become very popular. because when you buy the new samsung galaxy s5 on verizon, you get a second samsung galaxy s5 for free. so, who ya gonna give it to? maybe your brother could use it to finally meet a girl. your mom, but isn't your love reward enough? its not. maybe your roommate, i mean you pretty much

relatives of the fort hood shooter now say he wasn't in his right mind after the death of his mother and grandfather. the gunman's mother died late last year, and a friend who spoke on the family's behalf says the shooter was angry the military allowed him just one day off to go to her funeral. the friend says the family delayed the service for nearly a shriek the gunman could be there. the military later extended his leave time to two days. still, those who knew ivan lopez, say there weren't any signs he would attack his fellow soldiers. three people died. 16 others wounded in the rampage. the gunman himself then killed himself. investigators looking for a motive say they searched the soldier's home and interviewed his wife. they say mental health issues
12:12 pm
may have been the main cause of the attack. the gunman and his family just moved to fort hood a few weeks ago. those who saw him around his apartment complex say he always seemed friendly. >> i can't believe it. i saw him at lunch. and he seemed perfectly fine. and just -- it's mind-blowing really. >> it is. we're hearing the gut wrenching stories from victim's families along with tails of heroism under fire. officials identified the three soldiers who died. sergeant danny ferguson's fiancee says he sacrificed his life to save others by blocking a door that wasn't lock. the fiancee is also a soldier who was nearby during the shooting. the mother of sergeant timothy owens says her son died from five bullets to the chest while he tried to calm the shooter. he had recently gotten married, and friends say they can't believe he survived war, only to
12:13 pm
be murdered at home. >> you wildfire about it when he is -- you worry about it when he is overseas, and don't think about is happening here stateside. >> then there's the third victim, who died, he was carlos lazaney from puerto rico. his aunt said his father is very sick and they have not told him his son is dead. we have team fox coverage this afternoon. casey saying to gel. what's ---over. >> reporter: we just heard from texas governor perry and senator cruz. center cruz called fort hood a national treasure and both men spoke highly of the service and commitment of the people here, the first responders and family
12:14 pm
members as well, and said our focus should stay on the people. >> you still see until the eyes of the people you meet in the handshake they give you, the strength of these people. they will recover. they'll recover from this latest tragedy. they'll heal their wounds and we'll go forward and learn lessons about what has occurred here to minimize the chances of this happening again. >> and here's an example of the resilience of the victims. one of the wounded penned a note to the staff at the medical center asking how everybody was, and then write, let everyone know i'm doing good and we'll all get through this as a family and team. that soldier was shot and is still in the hospital. >> mission new on the gunman today? >> the army confirmed he bought his weapon at guns galore, store here, which also sold the gun to nadal has hasan. used in the first fort hood

12:16 pm
since we have been here today we have seen soldiers in uniform coming and going, bringing things like flowers and cards. three of the most critically wounded in this mass shooting are airlifted here because this is a major level one trauma? 30 miles east of post. when we started our day, all three of the critical condition folks were in serious, and they have since been upgraded to fair. they expect, however, they're still going to have a long road of recovery. in fact the hospital spokesperson says they will likely be in the hospital for days if not more weeks. >> you spoke to another of the gunman's neighbors, right? >> yeah. lopez and his family had not lived in the apartment complex long because, as you know, he was just transferred to fort hood in february from fort bliss here in texas. we did go over to the apartment complex and we talked to two women who lived just doors down from him, and they said he seemed very laid back. in the few months they had nope him.
12:17 pm
and more importantly, they said he seemed like a really good father. they described him as always being outside playing with his daughter. when they saw him they would always exchange pleasant tries. he would ask them how their day was going. they had no clue there was this dark side that we're starting to hear about, that he was being treated for anxiety and depression. listen to how the woman who lived just two doors down describes the moment when lopez's wife learn what had happened. >> everything still going on and she was about to go upstairs to her apartment, and they announced the shooter. as soon as they announced the shooter she stopped dead in her tracks and sat down. >> that woman says she tried consoling this wife but she really couldn't do so. the police showed up a short time much. coming up we'll talk with the wife of a soldier who was wounded in the fort hood

12:22 pm
>> you're welcome. you're more than welcome. >> i know you're still waiting to see him. you have a flight coming. what have you heard? how is he doing? >> he said he is doing okay. i'm the type, i have to see for myself. but other than that, he -- i can't wait to see him. >> i know he first thought he had been shot twice, and then they did an x-ray. >> i believe so. that was the first thing, he said he was shot twice, and then after that he called and i talked to him briefly, and he said, no, it was three times. the x-ray showed three. >> but the doctors are saying publicly they believe that he is going to be just fine. right? >> yes. >> thank goodness. i wonder where you were and how you found out. >> i'm from mississippi, and i -- >> where are you from? >> from -- i'm from oxford. >> okay.
12:23 pm
a friend of mine called, and she said, have you hear from jonathan? i said, no. she said have you been looking at the us? i said no. i had just got in from work. she said you might need to call. so i said, okay. i went in the house and started looking at the news that fort hood shooting and i was like, -- i immediately got on the phone and i called him, and luckily he answered, and i said, jonathan, are you okay? he kind of hesitated a little bit and i said, they're saying there's been a shooting, and he hesitated and said, yes, i was one of the victims. i was shot twice. and just -- i was just devastated at that time. i was so far away and it's like -- i was just helpless. so, i just began praying and just asking god to cover him and cover all of the other soldiers and their families, and i was just trying to get here. >> i don't blame you. i bet this wait was as tough as

anything you have been through. your husband has been shot in the hospital, and you can't get there. >> yes, yes. it felt like forever. it really did. and i just -- it is unexplainable you. see things like this on tv, in other places, but when it actually happens to your loved one or somewhere so close, it becomes real. >> i hope you have had a good support group in macomb. >> i have. my father, mother, coworkers of the department of human services, they were great, my my friend, classmates, encouragement and a lot of prayer, and our three kids are doing okay. they don't quite understand what is happening. they just want to talk to daddy now. >> you have little ones, too. tough to explain, isn't it?
12:25 pm
>> yes. ten, five, and three. >> what did you tell them about daddy? how do you explain this? >> my older son, which is ten, i could just talk to him. i told hmm that his dad was shot in an incident, and he was full of questions. he shut down at first and didn't want to talk about it. he said i just want to call my daddy. for the five and three-year-old, they just said, my daddy got hurt. so, i don't think they understand the shooting part. but it's like they know their dad is hurt, and they just want to come see daddy. >> well, our best to eric, jonathan, and kerr -- kirsten as well. thank you for your time, and give him up a our best. >> thank you. >> renee westbrook on the line with us from macomb mississippi.

then wall street looked over here and didn't like it. they're struggling right now. the tech sector is leading the decline, and it would appear that investors are concerned about value and how well these tec companies really are doing. we're down on the session. so close to an all-time high earlier today but gone. the labor department report this economy added 192,000 jobs, slightly below the 200,000 jobs predicted. the fed says the nation's unemployment rate did not change, held steady, 6.7, but encouraging news, the percentage of americans age 16 and older who are now working reached its highest level since 2009. ed henry has the latest and the reaction from the white house, and he is live on the north lawn for us this afternoon. what are they saying about the numbers? >> reporter: they're happy because what you're laying out is 49 straight months of private sector job growth. you hear them talk about that month after month.
12:33 pm
they think there is some momentum building for recovery. when you look behind those numbers you see manufacturing jobs declined for the first time since last july. some young people working more but millenial unemployment, far worse than the national average, and that's why when i appreciated the white house spokesman today on, where is the full recovery? he acknowledged there's more work to do. listen. >> we continue to believe there's a lot of work that can and should be done to strengthen our economy, to support the private sector as it leads our recovery. that being said there's plenty of reason to look at the report and feel good about it. >> reporter: they feel good and then released the president's schedule next week and he has three events in which he will focus on the economy. they realize they have a lot more to do, especially in a mid-term election. >> it's been a long five years dealing with this and republicans are hitting at him. >> reporter: nancy pelosi said if you add up the job growth

it's 8.9 million jobs created since 2010. and that counters a 8.8 million jobs lost during the recession. she said it was bush economic policies, bush recession, suggesting the blame lies with the last republican administration. when you talk to republicans they say the president has been in charge for over five years and it's not getting that much better. listen. >> people are perceiving a very sluggish, if not stagnant, job situation in this country, and it's almost like disappointing economic news has been the rule rather than the exception. >> reporter: that's why democrats such as chuck schumer are up front saying they want to focus away from health care and focus on the economy. on either issue the president has some good things and some tougher things he has to deal with. if he is going to convince people to let him keep control

of the senate. >> an award-winning journalist had died. her colleague is badly hurt after a policeman in afghanistan opened fire on their car. this comes on the eve of the country's historic election. more on that in a moment. first we have a photo of the victim, anja niedringhaus, witnesses say she died instantly. her colleague, kathy gannon, the ap reports the suspect shot her twice, but that she is now in stable condition. the two journalists had spent years together covering afghanistan. according to a free lancer who was with. the they were traveling with a convoy of election workers delivering ballots. they were just sitting, waiting for the convoy to move, when all of a sudden this policeman walked up to the car yelled, allahu akbar, or god is great, and then opened fire, and then surrendered to police.

it's afghanistan's third presidential race since the fall of the taliban in that country. the current president. cars -- hamid karzai cannot legally run for a third team, some say mercifully, so this marks the nation's first democratic transfer of power. jennifer, i know cath isy a mighty good friend of yours and you have known each other a long time. >> that's right. i've known kathy since 1993 when i moved to islamabad pakistan where she lives with her husband. anja and kathy were good friends. they covered afghanistan together for a long time. kathy has you undergone surgery and is expected to make a full recovery i'm told. kathy gannon has covered afghanistan since 1988. she used to walk with the -- kathy gannon was the first western journalist into kabul after 9/11 and was there when
12:37 pm
the first u.s. troops arrived. her book, is for infidel, from holy war to holy terror in afghanistan, is a must-read. >> jennifer, elections tomorrow. what kind of hopes on these things? >> well, they're expecting a 70% turnout but also expecting more violence like we saw today. i'm certain of one thing, however. kathy gannon would not want the focus to be on her today, as afghans prepare their most important election since the fall of the taliban. this it to taken by anja niedringhaus in recent days is of an afghan woman who just registered to vote. they would want people to talk about the women of afghanistan who make up 29% over the parliament. they would point out that in the past 13 years, three million girls are now in school. none were in school under the taliban. something that u.s. troops and the international community can be mighty proud of after 13 years of war, all threatened to be undone if the taliban return
12:38 pm
to power. anja niedringhaus won't be there to bear witness as afghans vote for the next president but the rest of the world must be. that what -- why journalists were willing to lay down their lives. >> thank you, jennifer. >> an update on the crisis ukraine. russians prime minister says all ukrainian service members have left crimea, except those who want to joan the russian military mcdonald's announced it's closing all its stores in crimea. the company has provided opportunity for employees to transfer to any other mcdonald's restaurants in ukraine and paying to relocate family. mcdonald's. one lawmaker said he is happy the chain is closing its doors

12:42 pm
18 minutes before the hour. we're expecting another news conference from fort hood around the top of the hour. after he shooting that left four people dead, including the gunman himself. investigators are trying to answer why he did it. chris wallace is live from washington. so far been a tough thing to come up with. >> absolutely. look, the fact is some people just snap. but here is a fella who had been under psychiatric care. had a psychological evaluation a month ago. he was under a doctor's care, taking a lot of medication.
12:43 pm
you have to assume that this was as good as the military can do in treating a person with problems, and the last psychiatric report, recording to the secretary of the army, had been he was not a danger to himself or anyone else. obviously that turned out to be tragically wrong. we have seen in the civilian world as well people get psychiatric help and still go off. >> you can have as much security as you want. we have very high security here. anthrax came into the building after the attacks on 9/11. it's very secure. that's not to sigh we -- if somebody wants to bring a gun, they can bring a gun you. can't stop every criminalled a advance. >> that's right. and i know people are saying, should they clamp down at the military base? i know there or two arguments. as far as the argument of more screening, this is not an airplane, not a flight. we're talking bat city. 100,000 people going back and forth. are you going to have every single one go through a metal
12:44 pm
detector, their cars inspected after and they somebody said you would have a three-hour like outside the military base if you did that. the flip argument is, let everybody be armed so then if somebody goes off you can kill them. the military brass says, the danger is greater that if that were to happen, that soldier on soldier disputes, arguments, festfights, would turn deadly. sometimes bad things happen and there may not be a solution to it. >> it's always kind of depressing and sometimes kind of nauseating the way the extremes of this issue, those on one side or the other of this issue, come out screaming before people can even bury their lives -- loved ones. >> if i'm going to listen to some politician, some member of congress, i'd rather listen to what the base commanders say and if there's considered judgment what needs to be done for security -- not to say they're
12:45 pm
always right and can't be reforms -- but i suspect they know more about what life is like on the military bases than most of the rest of us too. >> how is your bracket looking? >> what bracket? >> your ncaa tournament bract? >> if said, what bracket? it's dead and buried. it's gone. >> yep. i don't normally do this because i recruit against them, at ole miss we recruit against everybody in the seb but i'm kind of pulling for the sec. the hell with them for putting three teams in there. our teams are 10-1. i'm almost for florida and kentucky to fight it out again. >> you can't pick two teams. >> that's my final two. >> what? >> florida and kentucky, i guess i'd have to -- shouldn't answer that. i'll get -- i'd pick florida probably. i like their program. >> i'm picking kentucky. i like kentucky. they were the preseason favorite. a really hard time. they kind of got a together. i'm not crazy about the one and done thing but i'm rooting for kentucky. incidentally, are you going to
