follow us on twitter,@jeronfc. hope to see you here next week. welcome to america's news headquarte headquarters, hello, the hunt for the missing malazian jet liner is picking up. the international teams are rushing to determine approxim-- determine if the sounds they have been hearing has come from the plane's black box. a chinese ship twice detected what it described as pings.
12:31 pm
and another ship picked up a different noise event in another area. it is unclear in either is connect to flight 370. we have more live from bangkok thailand, david? >> reporter: hi, greg, yes, there's renewed hope that search teams are getting closer to finding out what happened to the jet. a chinese ship has now reported detecting pulses twice in the southern indian ocean, and the pulse sounds are detected a thousand miles west of perth, australia. and are reported to be the same frequency that are spent from the source of pings in a black box on a plane. they are describing the sounds that the chinese ship detected as an important lead. >> this morning we were contacted by the chinese authorities and advised that
12:32 pm
they had redetected the signals for 90 seconds within just two kill c kilometers of the original detection. this is an important and encouraging lead. but one which i urge you to continue to treat carefully. >> reporter: the australian authorities are also aware that nothing is conclusive yet and they have reported picking up an underwater sound in a different area about 300 nautical miles away. the ship is now investigating the sound before joining the chinese ship and investigating the punishes, its detected. it has become a race against time to find the black boxes, because the batteries will run out likely in the next few days. thank you. >> thank you, very much. president obama and the first lady will be attending a memorial on wednesday for the victims of last week's ft. hood shooting. that announcement coming as
12:33 pm
church services were held today to honor those whose lives were lost in last week's rampage on the army base. the alleged shooter, killed three people and wounded 16 before turning the gun on himself. rick is live at ft. hood, rick, how are the people there holding up? >> reporter: very tough, very challenging day here, as you might imagine, for the community, it's tight knit and revolves around ft. hood, there are 10s of thousands of soldiers here and 10s of thousands of civilians as well that are on and off the base every day. so as tragedy strikes, they are rallying together. the shifted focus to the victims and survivors and families. we were at a service where pastor jeff miller led the congregation in a prayer for the fallen, lighting four candles for the three fatal victims and is the shooter who killed
12:34 pm
himself. they sang songs, including amazing grace," and the church members hugged and cried and the pastor talked about the importance of seeking comfort and peace. >> it brings our community, our church community really closer together, but also, everybody ready to reach out and be god's people in the community to try to bring comfort and peace in any way we can. >> and greg, as you mentioned, there will be a memorial service for the fallen here on post for the president and first lady. >> rick, have you been able to learn a bit more about what may have sparked wednesday's shooting? >> well, we have not heard approximate from the army today, the next press conference from the commanding general here is not scheduled until tomorrow. but the officials here on base, have told us that they are continuing their investigation and are looking closely at the shooter's mental health and mental history. searching for witnesses who may add more clues to this and what we have heard is that they now

believe, in fact, that there was a verbal altercation and that may have been over a leave of absence request made by lopez. he was denied the request and the paperwork, he got very angry when he went to the hr office and sought time off, and they said come back the next day. he left and grabbed his weapon and came in and opened fire. first on a supervisor and then shooting others randomly before eventually killing himself. the army released a new overhead image that shows the sprawling crime scene, it covers two city blocks, a couple of areas outdoors as of midday yesterday, the fbi and texas rangers were still processing the crime scene. we do not have word yet on whether the taskt is complete. of course, greg, we do hope to learn more about it tomorrow. >> rick, live in ft. hood texas.
12:36 pm
thank you very much. turning to a dra mattre-- to a dramatic rescue at sea, the little girl fell ill while traveling with her family to the south pacific. we are following the story. >> reporter: hey, yes, we have not heard of drama like this on the high seas in quite some time. it happened to a family from san diego that set out for a trip. rescuers at first light managed to get their 1-year-old daughter to safety after she developed a rash covering most of her body and a fever as well. the family issued an emergency ping to the u.s. coast guard who then responded. you know, it took the california air national guard to parachute in with four rescuers, they landed in the ocean and had to swim to the boat. there you go. you see them jumping out of the back of the c-130, they managed
12:37 pm
to get on the boat and stabilized the child and then, they waited for the u.s. v vandergriff to get them on board. the man that organized it said it was touch and go. >> a couple of things we were trying to do was provide air lift or get to land. it just depends on whether the child is to deteriorate, one of the main issues is children do well for a long time and then crash. >> reporter: this all happened 900 miles off of the coast on of mexico. you can see cabo san lucas, it lost its communication and steering, so it was not entirely sure where to go. the coast guards are experienced sailors but the family was seriously alarmed. >> i hope that the baby is okay more than anything else and i'm concerned for the 3-year-old on bored, that is her sister and she is well aware of what is
12:38 pm
going on. there's men climbing on the boat to stabilize the child, it sounds crazy. >> reporter: and the u.s. coast guard telling fox news today that they expect the ship to reach the u.s. west coast, san diego, by wednesday. hopefully everyone is going to be okay. back to you. >> we hope that toddler will be okay and those rescuers are heroes for doing all. thank you very much. severe weather in parts of the south could lead to a very messy monday morning commute. a storm system brewing expected to dump heavy rains and bring thunderstorms and the threat of flash flooding. meteorologist janice deane is live. jd? >> reporter: yes, we have shifted to springtime storms across the gulf coast. this time of year, we expect it. but we could see very heavy rainfall leading to flooding across the gulf coast, up towards the southeast. you see right now, we do not
12:39 pm
have watches or warnings in place. we have the potential for hail, damaging winds and a lot of cities here shaded in yellow. as the storm moves east with a rd and northward, the potential for strong to severe storms. so keeping an eye on that, we will tell you if there's future storms or warnings. by tuesday, could see a bit of mixture of snow here up towards new england and then we have a new batch of showers over areas that are saturated. so we have potential for flooding. several inches of rainfall for years that do not need it, over 4 inches perhaps 6 to 8 inches of isolated rainfall in these areas. back to you. >> in the meantime, it's lovely here. >> it is, what a change from the wi

>> okay, brand new reaction, we learned that the number of unemployed stayed fairly steady in the month of march. and the managing director of the international monetary fund, the imf, spoke out on sunday morning futures, and she said that while the unemployment rate is promising, the environment to create jobs could be better. on those numbers, they are better. but they are not at potential, if you will. and they could be and they should be a higher number of jobs. what is holding us back is probably a degree of uncertainty, a lack of confidence, the fact that a lot of companies are investing in to themselves more than actually investing in except and in job creations. >> joining us now with more,

brenda, achker of bulls and bears. she was probably being diplomatic and polite. 192,000 jobs is in truth, mediocre, don't you have to have roughly 340,000 jobs each and every month just to improve and do that? you really have to do have, what, 3 and 4% economic growth? >> yes, gdp and over the last 12 months, we have averaged about 183,000, which is less than we need to get the faltering economy going. >> people often compare this this to the reagan years and he would say it was a more difficult economic picture, he had run away inflation and interest rates that were sky high, double digit and yet, he was able to create economic growth and create nmore jobs. >> yeah, absolutely.
12:46 pm
there could not be more two opposite ends of the spectrum. reagan cut regulations, cut taxes. corporate, dividend. income, and obama of course, has done, you know, he has poured a trillion dollars in to a stimulus, shovel ready jobs that have not helped that much. and in terms of regulations he said that he has a pen and he has been using it a lot. and so, businesses are worried about all those regulations. and then of course there's obamacare, which is truly a federal -- could be headed to a single payer system. >> don't we need to look at the employment number? >> yes, it's called u-6. it's the first place i go when i look at the unemployment report. because basically that captures so much more. it captures the people who have dropped out, because they are just, you know, discouraged.
12:47 pm
they are not going to be in the labor force any longer. they are not looking for a job. and those part timers that want to be full timers. and there are many of those. >> yeah. want to show a piece of video, we opened the segment with the head of the imf, she was with hillary clinton, and tom was the moderator. this is a woman's forum in new york and why are they high fiving? because they were talking about hillary clinton as the president of the united states. it does invite the question, if that were to come to pass, would hillary clinton's stewardship of the economy be better than president obama's especially judging by the success her husband had? >> you know the time of her husband, her husband did have success. and part of that was because he -- when the republicans came in the congress, he had welfare reform. he cut taxes.
12:48 pm
his his reign was over the internet bubble. when that burst, you know, and then president bush inherited that. it's hard to the know exactly if hillary would have the same conditions, for example. >> good to see you. we will catch brenda every saturday morning on "bulls and bears," 10:00 a.m. eastern on fox news channel. check it out. we could be a step closer to finding out what happened to the missing plane. how will they confirm what came from the plane or not? series of mysterious signals picked up by chinese and then australian crews. the big challenge now finding out if these signals are indeed coming from the plane's black boxes. joining us, the president of the marine salvage group. what's your reaction to the latest developments? the chinese first described what they heard as pings. and they were fairly consistent in their sequence but now in a very different area, fair distance apart from the chinese, the australian ship says we've heard a "noise event." >> that's a mystery. they're a lot further north. and this time of year, it would be greater to be in a better latitude for a search and recovery. i don't understand how they could have two different sets of signals.
12:54 pm
i imagine they're similar. but it doesn't make sense. it's certainly not the same aircraft. >> i heard one expert say, look, these sounds are so far apart, they couldn't possibly be from the same source. which may mean that one of them came from the plane or neither of them did. the search area is so huge, and the depth there is, is so far down. what's the likelihood, a small percentage here? >> not necessarily, well, it's real hard, you know. the old term the needle in the haystack. well, in this case we don't even know which haystack to look in. but if there is, there's something to one of these signals, then it's a great, great hope, if you will, for the site. one of the concerns now going forward, if you concentrate aircraft in either of these sites or both of these sites, of course, they'll probably consider another aircraft which
12:55 pm
would be properly equipped to handle separation of these guys so aircraft can avoid each other. it's a big concern when you have a big search area. it's narrowed down what aircraft and they're looking out over a certain area. so they'll probably consider having an aircraft watch for collision avoidance. >> what's the next step here? do, if they do think it came from 370, do they map the ocean floor of that area? what do they do? >> roger that. they'll take some side scans. they've got a great case example of this with the, i think it was air france, the 407 out of brazil. they had a great challenge there as well. we kind of, you know, found wreckage, of course, way sooner, and they identified the site. but if these pings are something, you know, of consequence, as i recall, if was phoenix, i think, was the french vessel that brought in the
