1:31 pm
founds eczema that starts in childhood and goes into adult hood is likely to be with you forever. some people can't even stand to have clothes rub against them. what's out there that's new and can we be optimistic for a cure? >> we haven't gotten to the cure stage yet. but eczema is actually a chronic condition. and that's really the breaking news here that people think oh after childhood you're done with it, 10% to 15% of children have it on their face or other parts of their body. adults tend to get it in places where you move a lot like elbows, knees and necks. eczema is an irritated, inflamed skin. and it comes from the greek meaning everer ves or bubble over. it is not an allergy, per se, like you're allergic to something so your skin blows up. it's that people with allergies
1:32 pm
tend to have it. and this study shows something dramatic, which is it's a chronic, recurrent problem. they followed 7,000 children. 80% of them still had some evidence of it at the age of 20 to 26, whether they were getting skin creams for it, steroid creams or whether they were getting other treatments or whether they were just having breakouts. this means that you have to go see your dermatologist and be followed for it. stress continues to bring it on. alcohol tends to bring it on. not keeping your skin hydrated in the winter. you've got to use those creams. >> how bad can it get? >> it can affect social shri. a lot of children may not be able to get out on the beach and take their clothing off. we think it's an inflammatory process that the immune system is overreacting. that's part of the reason why by
1:33 pm
reducing any inflammatory process, the food that you eat, stay away from dairy foods, nuts, soybeans, all of those can reduce -- eggs for example can reduce any kind of inflammatory process. they have the itch and the scratch. stay away from wearing wool clothing and stay with cotton. no hot shower because that making it worse. if the itch is really bad you put an ice cube and hold it. there's no harm. if you touch it, you won't get it. the symptoms kind of wax and wane. it disappears and comes back. make sure you keep the skin well hydrated by moisturizing, humidifying. the lotion i like is sarna. it reduces the itch. nothing really helps.
1:34 pm
you've got it go see a dermatologist to get cortisone. >> is that safe for children? >> you need to make sure to talk to the dr. we'octor. there's really no cure. stay away from the stress, you may get away with it. >> really severe cases get immune owe suppressant. there's a doctor who views the skin as a barrier. it's our largest organ. and if we rebuild the barrier we might be able to put it in remission. i've seen remarkable reports from nih. >> any kind of shampoos that are irritants, you need to stay away from them. >> your skin might rebound. >> sometimes this is a
1:35 pm
hereditary problem. some kids have asthma, hay fever and eczema. >> don't ignore it. thank you, doctor. beer and barbecue ready to go, hand in hand. some studies have shown that grilled meats can contain cancer causing substances. but doctors now say that marinating your meat in beer not only make it taste good but make it safer to seat. why would it prevent cancer? >> this sounds a little funny. there's some humor with this, but it's also an i have, very serious topic. you should take a lot of veggies and fruits and vegetables, and that's good for colon cancer, et cetera. we've talked about the fact that barbecue beef, whenever you grill and barbecue at a high temperature of 300, you increase the rick of cancer-producing
1:36 pm
chemicals. one of them is hca, and the other one is pah. these are very important, because as you take these chemicals after barbecuing your beef, they get into your system, you metabolize them and they cause tomorrow dna chancges. in animals it causes cancer. after a horrible winter that we've had, are we going to say don't barbecue? absolutely not. don't bring it up to the temperature of 300. marinate it in beer. you can do other things, olive oil and things like that. antioxidants in the beer, they think that neutralizes the car sengenics. >> you've got to make sure it's cooked. >> the dark beer worked better than the light beer. other marinades work. caribbean marinade, herbal
1:37 pm
marinade works very well, at least 30 minutes, according to the cancer institute. the other thing you can do is flip it frequently, trim off the fat, put it in aluminum foil, egg plant or zucchini, you don't have this problem at all. none of these hydrocarbons in vegetables. >> wait, wait, wait. isn't it, putting it on a charcoal grill the place where it picks up the carcinogens. so if i put my zucchini or my corn, which is my personal favorite if you invite me this the summer, i don't get any carcinogens? >> in humans a huge study by the university of minnesota, getting that charred meat, that well-done meat, it is a big risk in cancers. >> but to the point that jamie was trying to make. the problem is in that charred
1:38 pm
tissue. so you don't want to make it into a big flame. you're fighting the burn, you're burning the amino acids. >> cook it long and low. >> long and low. >> in the meat itself. >> don't forget the corn if i'm coming over. i promise you, you will only hear this on sunday house call. walking and talking doesn't seem to be dangerous, but coming up, we're going to tell you why the next time you're up roaming around, you really shouldn't have your eyes on your cell phone. you better look at the road and the sidewalk in front of you. doesn't even have to be in new york. [ male announcer ] hands were made for playing. legs, for crossing. feet...splashing. better things than the joint pain and swelling of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. if you're trying to ma, now may be time to ask about xeljanz. xeljz (tofacitinib) is a small pill,
1:39 pm
you better look at the road and for adults with moderate to severe ra for whom methotrexate did not work well. xeljanz can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. seris, sometimes fatal infections and cancers have happened in patients taking xeljanz. don't start xeljanz if you have any infection, unless ok with your doctor. tears in the stomach or intestines, low bod cell counts and higher liver tes and cholesterol levels have happened. your doctor should perform blood tts before you start and while taking xeljanz, and roinely check certain liver tests. tell your doctor if you have been to a region where certain fungal infections are common, and if you have had tb, hepatitis b oc, or are prone to infections. tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, and if you are pregnant, or plan to be. taken twice daily, xeljanz can reduce the joint pain and swelling of moderate to severe ra, even without methotrexate. ask if xeljanz is right for you.
1:42 pm
will it soon be a problem to text and walk? there's a new study that found it leads to more injuries for pedestrians than it does for distracted drivers. can you believe that? dr. siegel has this report. >> texting or talking on your smartphone while walking is at least as dangerous as doing it while driving. if you are texting while walking not only is your mind somewhere else, but you are blind to what is happening around you. >> i think pedestrian safety has been ignored somewhat, and the issue with texting and going across intersections is a serious public health issue that results in large numbers of injuries and deaths and a little bit more attention paid to it and putting the cell phone down while you're doing this can save a number of lives. >> more than 1500 people were treated in ers for cell phone-related injuries in 2010 alone. a study shows that if you use your cell phone whale working you are 60% more likely to veer
1:43 pm
off course. and when you veer off khorsab khorsabad -- course, bad things can happen. >> hitting a car is one of the most dangerous things that can happen. injuries to the pelvis, lower extremities. extremely common with these. i just was working in the emergency department today and had somebody who was hit by a car, actually, a low speed, but knocked the person down and the car ran over them. think had chest injuries. splenic fracture, pelvic fractures and a left knee fracture as a result of this. >> if you actually have to text while walking, there are apps with a camera so you can see what is going on around you. >> now the purpose of this is not to make people out there think that texting while driving is not a big risk. it's a huge risk. but i don't think people realize that when you're walking along
1:44 pm
texting, worse than even driving, you're not watching what you're doing, you're not seeing what you're doing. there's an app out there called walk and text, but i don't think it takes care of the problem. you're texting and the iphone will show you right in front of you, but where's your peripheral vision? last year outside of fox news, a car judgmemped a curb and hit s people. >> it's a serious issue. people can a, bump into you. a poor young man was killed because he had headphones on him and a truck backed into him. >> i think if you need that app with the camera, you need to go to texters anonymous. and you have one that's
