4:00 pm
and that's it for today. have a great week. and we'll see you next "fox news sunday." we will see you next "fox fox urgent, it is now monday morning over the indian ocean as search teams pursue what's being called now an encouraging lead in the search for the missing malaysia airliner flight 370. a third pulse signal has been debited deep within the indian ocean. after two other sounds were spotted by ships in other areas. search teams are now trying to determine if those alerts, all of them, are coming from one area. and they are hoping it would be coming from the plane's black boxes or being triggered by whales perhaps or other noise from ships. but still it's a deep sea mystery, and the next several hours are crucial to the search. they are already in the air, we understand, and on the water looking on this new day of the
4:01 pm
week. the batteries in the plane's black boxes are fast declining, we do know that because that's how they were designed. if they are not found soon, we may never know what happened to that plane carrying 239 people. the search now entering its fifth week and still not a trace of that jetliner has been found. but teams are not giving up home. roger manard is live from australia with more on this. first of all, bring us up to speed, where are we? >> reporter: the search is now focused to top three pulse signals picked up by the chinese and australian ships over the weekend. the british navy ship hms echo is now in the area where the chinese teams are. both teams were consistent with the signal emitted bay black box flight recorder, which had a frequency of 37.5 kilohertz a second. it continued for 90 seconds and the exact same time between each ping. some distance away, the australian ship ocean shield
4:02 pm
also detected an acoustic event with the characteristics of the pulse from a flight recorder. ocean shield is staying in the area to see if they can pick up the signal again. afterwards it will travel to the site to where the chinese vessel is. >> you know, i'm curious, roger, i know we don't have live cameras out there where they are working, but i'm curious to know if the mood has reported to change among the search teams because they have been down similar roads before where they all chase objects in the sea, you know, what's the excitement level that you're hearing about over this? >> well, i think the mood has changed marginally. everybody's still being really cautious here. the authorities are erring on the side of caution because they have seen hope raised before and don't want to see that again. now, the man in charge of the overall search here described the three signals as, quote, fleeting encounters, but could not be verified at this stage.
4:03 pm
but it was emitted the fact there were two detections and were both, quote, promising. and we have not heard that before. and significantly also, there was white color debris found near the chinese vessel. that has not been identified, so it is still very much a speculative theory at the moment. we still don't know for sure whether there's any link or connection to mh-370. >> all right. roger, we appreciate you giving us the details of exactly what they are searching with, and what the assets are that have been deployed on this monday where they are. roger maynard live from australia. we'll bring in dr. allen diehl, author of "air safety investigators." good to have you on board tonight. >> thank you, harris. >> is it usual to chase a black
4:04 pm
box or beacon and have it turn out to be nothing? >> it certainly can happen, although typically if you get that same pulse repetition rate and frequency, that's an awfully good clue there's probably not many things that can imitate a pinger like that. >> i understand that it shares kind of the same frequency as some marine animals, though, but what distinguishes this in your mind? >> well, both the frequency, which you are correct, i understand and am not a marine biologist, some animals e met frequencies similar to that, but the constant pulsing the chinese apparently describe for over 90 seconds, that's -- i don't know much about marine biology, but that sounds more mechanical and biological. >> for our viewers here on the weekend, that will sound familiar because that's a little bit of the ground we have heard last night. but now for another day with the third pulsing. if pinger data is confirmed, what is next in all of this?
4:05 pm
>> well, the course of the echo that the british ship is already on the scene of the chinese's potential location, they will have to start bringing in the more accurate sonar. those are handheld devices the chinese are using. they will drop the devices that go very deep and verify that, in fact, this is either is or is not what they hope it is. the pingers. then they have to start with the side scanning sonar to map the wreckage or try to locate and then map the wreckage on the floor. so probably sunday out a roboti robotics. and then they will start llight recorderings. obviously they want to try to recover the fuselage to bring up the human remains, but at those depths, 13,000 feet, they may not bring up things like the wings.
4:06 pm
for example, after they read the cockpit voice recorder, and i'm not saying this happens, but there were gunshots during the initial takeover and somebody cut the recorder off. you probably don't need the wings and engine and know it is a criminal act. just speculating here. they will make decisions as they recover the data and the wreckage. >> flrt. you mentioned and i do want to clear this will up and make it clear, you are talking a about a would-be situation as to why you wouldn't bring up everything from tell bottom of the ocean floor. i'm curious to find out, now what happens if the information isn't accurate or do you just hope to get lucky? >> the air marshall says they will look for a considerable amount of time.
4:07 pm
this happens for a while in the western indian ocean when the south african 747 went down and it took two years to find the black box, which solved the mystery, by the way. but in both those cases they knew approximately where the aircraft was, so if they don't find the pingers, this could be a very long search, and it's possible they will never be locate it. we know this has happened before, we are jetliners, not jetliners, but we'll cross our fingers that they do. i had them test those batteries before they were sent out, so it's possible with reduced power -- again, we may get lucky. >> i'm losing my audio a bit with you and apologize, doctor,
4:08 pm
but i want to bring in some of your experience here because it's kind of an interesting point. you are what is known with the ntsb office. what exactly does that position entail? >> the u.n. specialists look at the underlying cause for human error. i was the ntsb's first, actually, they changed the name to human performance, but i was an aviation expert. sometimes we do a psychological autopsy, but often after we look at the recorders, the flight data will help you what happened. tippic ily we look at pillot

4:10 pm
the president wanted to know if it was an assassination or crash. but this accident occurred in south africa and killed the president in mozambique. the widow who married nelson mandela was pleading with someone to find evidence and i tried to do that in the book i wrote. >> very interesting. so you have been down a similar road. as i pointed out, we don't have much time. thank you for bringing us that information, because we may have a few more days before the batteries run out in the black boxes. you throw out a potential date of april 15th to give them a little more time, and that is perhaps a ray of light in which you have brought the viewers tonight. dr. allen diehr, thank you for joining us. >> thank you, harris. it looks like things are getting worse not better for
