all too great. as an army, we accept this is a dangerous profession. all who wear this wonderful uniform and pledge to defend our nation and its way of life understand they may one day be called to make that ultimate sacrifice. but inside these gate, behind these walls, we expect a much different order of things. a special of safety and security, of brotherhood, simply a sense of home. and yet, for a second time, horrible violence and unspeakable tragedy have breached these walls and torn through our very souls. and once more, yet again, we come something to grieve and to

friends, they were leaders. of course, they were sons and husbands and fathers. they are rightly to be long remembered, mourned and forever celebrated. we still have much to learn about what happened here last week. but already we've heard the stories of remarkable courage, extraordinary sacrifice, actions that kept that moment of horror from becoming even greater. we may never know how many lives were saved or how many others might have been lost were it not for these heroes, but know this. we are incredibly grateful for their bravery and even more humbled by their selflessness. 150 years ago, president abraham lincoln penned a letter to a mother who had lost five sons during the civil war. the president said, i feel how

ferguson, staff sergeant carlos laza lazaney rodriguez, sergeant timothy owens. danny and carlos joined two decades ago, in a time of peace and stayed as the nation went to war. timothy joined after 9/11, knowing he could be sent into harm's way. between them, they deployed nine tim times. each served in iraq. danny came home from afghanistan just last year. they lived those shining valus,s loyalty duty, honor that keep us strong and free. it was love for the army that made them the soldiers they were.

for danny, said his fiance, being in the army was his life. carlos, said a friend, was the epitome of what you would want a leader to be in the army. timothy helped counsel his fellow soldiers. said a friend, he was always the person you could go to talk to. and there was love for their comrades, for all of you that defined their last moments. as we've heard, when the gunman tried to push his way into that room, danny held the door shut, saving the lives of others, while sacrificing his own. it's said that timothy, the counselor, even then, gave his life walking toward the gunman, trying to calm him down.

worlds have been shaken by the tragic events of last week, by the sudden and unexpected loss of those we loved, of those who are part of our team, a part of our family. there's a poignant poem that captures well the feelings expressed by the psalmist and may capture your feelings as well. the poem simply says, when you lose someone you love, it hurts. it hurts in the middle of the night. it hurts in the middle of the day, it hurts in the middle of your stomach. it hurts to lose someone you love. the reason it hurts so much is because we loved so much. we loved the one who is no longer with us, husband, son, father, brother, friend, we loved them and now they're gone and we grieve their passing, but we must never forget that we do not walk through the valley of

grief by ourselves. the psalmist recognized this when he placed book ends of reassurance around his description of the chaos. he began his words by saying god is our refuge and strength and ever present help in trouble. he ended by say iing, the lord almighty is with us. god walks with us and even carries us when life hits us hard. not only does god walk with us, others come alongside to walk the journey. family members, close friends, fellow soldiers, sometimes total strangers all come alongside to support us and to lift us and to, if possible, ease our burden and carry our grief. we never have to walk alone. there's a contemporary song that describes this powerful truth. part of the chorus sung as one

♪ >> the memorial to the murdered at fort hood in central texas. the feed cut just as taps finished and our rick leventhal is on scene and is with us. rick. >> that final roll call has to be one of the most heartbreaking traditions in the military when they read the names of the fallen and missing amongst members of the military here and some say they are here and then there's just that silence as they call the names of soldiers who are not. we can tell you there were a number of family members here of the three fallen soldiers, including sergeant ferguson had

seven immediate family members and 20 extended family members. his parents, his brother, three sisters and a daughter were all here. sergeant ferguson engaged to be married. army was his life, we heard today. staff sergeant carlos lazaney rodriguez, had father, mother, two sisters and a son and timothy owens had five here, include his wife, mother, two step-children and his daughter. 3,000 in attendance, shepherd. probably would have been more but they limited access to this ceremony. >> rick leventhal in a contribute to three american heroes who had served and served and served and came home and were murdered by one of their hone. the president and the first lady are leaving the venue now as we look at fort hood.

they will get back to d.c. shortly. there in the foreground you steel met of those who died in kali kaline, texas, just outside fort hood. we've been proud to bring you this service without commercial interruption and the tribute to them. while this has been going on we've been following developments. there have been several other stories today. i'm sure you heard what happened in pittsburgh. police say a 16-year-old boy with two knives came into his high school just outside pittsburgh and began to stab people, slashing and stabbing his classmates and unthinkably, the stabbing went on for nearly an hour. by the time it was over, investigators say 19 of those young men and women in pittsburgh were hurt as well as a security officer who took down the suspect with the help of an

assistant principal. it happened as classes were about to get under way in franklin regional high school in murraysville about 15 miles east of pittsburgh but part of the general area. let's move to the wall here and show you how it looked as emergency responders arrived at the scene. this is video coming in this morning, a stunning thing to watch. emergency officials arriving. police say somebody pulled a fire alarm during this attack. we're not clear who yet and that sent people rushing out of the building. hospital officials say most of the people had stab wounds to the right side of their stomach, almost like a pattern. >> i saw one kid, his arm looked like it was bleeding. he was already attended by other people >> my brother's friend got shot in the back and we don't know how he is doing. >> meanwhile, police are check

i t ing into reports between the suspect in this case and another student just before the stabbings. steve is there. what more can you tell us? >> reporter: well, a tragic and troubling today in murraysville, pennsylvania, as you mentioned, a student and parents' worst nightmare, this kind of violence breaking out in a peaceful place like murrysville. when the suspect arrived on campus and started waving two big knives, slashing at his classmates and anybody who was nearby. they were hit in the hallways and classroom. the chaos was unleashed instantly and lasted quite a while, as you kated and came to the rescue. the 911 calls give some sense to that chaos and panic. listen. >> we have multiple stab victims inside the school and outside

the school. the actor is in custody. he go he -- you go to the rear of the high school and assist any way you can. we have victims all over the ground. not the young man now in custody, depends whether he cooperates with police he could face very serious charges >> what else do we know about this confrontation between the suspect and the security officer? >> reporter: that's right. the young man was slashing at students and a security officer came up on the scene and one of the assistant principals came up, tackled him, got the knives away from him apparently. details are sketchy at this point. the officers were able to handcuff the young man and take him away and ended what could have been an even worse tragedy here. here's the police chief on that.

no sound here. okay. the police chief described that scene and said there was some very heroic actions today including a young woman who applied pressure to stop the bleeding on a friend and others tried to get their friends out of the way, out of the line of attack of this young man. a very chaotic day full of terror and heroism. >> unbelievable it could go on for this long. imagine being a parent. this news was all over pittsburgh media this morning as this was happening. imagine being a parent at home or work and not knows where your kid is. matt knows. he has a son at the high school. good morning. how is your son? >> my son is fine. obviously concerned about what happened. >> what kind of information were you getting? what was your understanding of things? >> very little. it started out as a normal day. i went to drop my son off at

school. as he was getting out of the car we noticed instead of students coming into the school they were coming out of the school. >> i wonder if your son talked to any of them or communicated with him. >> he never made it inside the school. he walked. we could hear the fire alarm going off as he was leaving. he followed the rest of the students to their designated evacuation area. a lot of the students thought they were evacuating because of the fire alarms. there wasn't a whole -- some of these students in other parts of the building, as they were leaving, may not have known exactly what was going on. >> have you gotten any explanation for how a stabbing continues for close to an hour? >> i don't have information firsthand. from what i saw outside the building, i do not think that stabbing could have gone for an

hour. the response to this was massive and rapid. by the time i realized it wasn't a simple fire alarm, there were already numerous police cars and ambulances arriving at the scene. this had to start shortly after 7:00. i can't imagine much past 7:15 or 7:20. couldn't imagine it either but the word we've gotten is it very much did. >> thank you. we'll be waiting to hear from the authorities on the rest of the investigation. we heard from the hospital earlier in the day, there was a live news conference, the hospital held. and the doctors, they spoke of this one young man, who was the most severely wounded of them all, this young man got to the hospital, level 1 trauma. pittsburgh has great hospitals and got there just in time. this boy, i believe they said he was 17 years old.

he was bleeding profusely. they immediately got him into the operating room to just stop the bleeding. that was object number one. that happened. they were able to stabilize him. this afternoon he was scheduled for another surgery. they expected more surgery, because like so many of the rest of them he was stabbed in his right abdomen on the lower right hand side. this suspect potentially a left-hander was going around for minutes and minutes, stabbing and stabbing. we'll get to the bottom of what happened with the confrontation that preceded it all when we get to the pittsburgh area. big news from the searching desk. not as if they're cautiously optimistic, they've heard more pinging and heard two more signal is in the ocean as they hunt for the missing flight 370.

they narrowed the search area dramatically. we're not talking a massive search field anymore. this is a whole new ballgame. the man in charge of the search now says, i am optimistic. we have never heard that before. they're soon going to find that jet. that's what he says, very optimistic. brand new details on all of this. i'm shephard smith in new york. glad to have you in.

coming from the black box. they're much more surenow. a ship came close to the pings that they first heard over the week. about a thousand miles close to perth. 1,043 or so miles, that's where they think the thing likely crashed. zooming in here, you can see the different places the ship picked up the pings. it's in kilometers. i think our graphics department moved to europe or something. we still have this in europe, thank you, graphics department. tomorrow, we will have it in centimeters. you can see the difference is, not that it helps you at all because who the hell knows what a kilometer is. and now to get in on the signals before the black boxes completely die. >> there is a finite amount of time those pingers will be transmitting. what we're trying to do is maximize the use of the pinger

locator to detect those bye co s -- beacons while we still can >> they're coming in a 500 square area and say this search is like trying to find a desktop computer in a city the size of los angeles. that doesn't sound very optimistic. the people there sound very optimist optimistic, a much smaller search than so far and it might expla explain why the jet flew thousands of miles off course. it looks to investigators intentional. covering this from the very beginning, a whole new tone from these guys. it's not from underlings or shad shadowy figures, this is from the leaders. they're on the record. >> that's right. the head of the air force for ah australians figured out these signals could not have come from an animal. it's so likely it came from a

black box, one part of their optimism. the other, as you pointed out, detected them. this time the signals coming from the black box are weaker and that is frightening because they could die any moment. they were only able to stay on that ping about seven minutes today. >> in one of the two cases. >> so this is really a race against time because unless they're able to locate where the black box is, where the wreckage is, the job becomes really difficult. >> they've made it clear these batteries don't just -- they're living and then they're dead. the batteries fade out, the signal wouldn't go as far and they're hopeful there is more. if they can't find more they move to the next phase. >> move to the next phase an that's when things get really slow. there's technology, the side son sonar technology that can take

about six weeks to map that area, 500 miles a lot narrower than we were talking about before and the drone vehicles that can go on the floor and they don't move any faster than you and i walk. imagine how long it could take scouring that floor. and imagine how long it could take or we could get lucky and the new technologies come to bear. >> jason, thanks a lot. what's the difference? the pinging is real, not coming from somewhere else. they're confident the pinging is from this area and only black boxes make that pinging sound. the pinging only lasts a month or more. they're confident this is the only jet that's missing anywhere. they believe they have the general area down. if they do, they say they do, they'll find this thing. nobody was making that prediction four or five days ago. for those that are hoping and that maybe want to prevent this

from happening again, there's hope. >> oscar pistorius back on the stand again, holding back crying again, in tears. he was speaking to his own friendly lawyer before and now he's speaking with the prosecutors. it's a whole new ballgame. there was a confrontation in court today and what oscar pistorius refused to do with our own judge napolitano, how they may be working the o.j. defense. n you'll need when you retire? then we gave each person a ribbon to show how many years that amount might last. i was trying to, like, pull it a little further. murder trial. now he's talking to the prosecutor. the prosecutor started off the crosby asking the blade runner to explicitly state that he did not, in fact, kill his girlfriend. he's not going to do that. pistorius said he shot her, calling it a terrible mistake. the prosecutor had the court watch this video of pistorius on the gun range. sky news first broadcast this in february. it shows a person who sounds like pistorius. pistorius admits this is he. he admits it, and he said it's a lot softer than brain, but expletive, it's like a zombie stopper. pistorius firing at a melon, admitting it's he, saying it's like a zombie stopper, that that watermelon is softer than brain. this is right before he killed his girlfriend. after the clip, the prosecutors explain where he chose to show that video in court today.

reeva steenkamp's head was the same thing as the exploding watermelon in the video. the defense spoke up, calling it an unfair comparison, and calling it uncalled for. before the case wrapped up for the day, the prosecutor repeatedly asked oscar pistorius, why did you shoot your gun in the first place? >> oscar pistorius can face a quarter century to life in prison, if convicted of premeditated murder. judge andrew napolitano joins us now. i said before you said this was like an o.j. thing, but you didn't say that. and where we got that is beyond me. but go on. >> this is quite different from o.j. if o.j. had taken the stand in his case, he would be on death

row today. one of the smartest things his lawyers did was to keep him off the stand. there's no way he could have withstood the cross-examination. this cross examiner knows exactly what buttons to press with o.j. another difference is one judge, a professional full-time jurist is also the jury here, the sole juror. all this emotion, all this screaming and yelling and crying is probably not going to affect her. she has two assistant judges who take notes for her and will add vise her. but this decision is solely hers. >> at the core of this, is credibility. >> there's no question he pulled the trigger. the question is, was he trying to kill her in response to the argument they had, or did he believe it was an intruder and not her? the burden is of the the government to prove all these elements of the crime beyond a reasonable doubt.
