9:01 pm
big new job. a busy night on "the kelly file" starts right now. tensions build, so called militia members mobilize and armed government rangers look to enforce the law. we have live pictures from the bundy ranch in nevada about an hour northeast of vegas. it's become ground 0 a struggle between frustrated western land owners and the bureau of land management. there is a growing number of supporters for rancher cliven bundy in an tense standoff. the feds view bundy as an out law of sorts refusing to pay grazing fees. this week, the confrontation turned ugly.
9:02 pm
bundy's son, tasered. his sister, knocked to the ground the story gets attention, other ranchers and groups are rallying to bundy's cause and meetings like this one held on wednesday. >> so you imagine what happened right now. okay? did god not create the cow? they've got us on the left, right. and then, and then, this is where it gets rough, okay? this is where it goes way the hell beyond. they can throw an army of men around there. literally. with snipers. on people just like you are.
9:03 pm
men, women and children just like you are. okay they do believe they have a right to be there. you believe you can be there. some day, they're going to throw that army of men around you. and then, somehow if you're like they got the right to draw the damn tripod on the ground so if you cross the line, they can put a bullet in you? who the hell is the man behind that trigger? i want to know. i want to know who in the hell? which one of you guys gave that guy the authority to bring that rifle down? which one of us is he going to shoot? are we going to give it up? this is a hell of a lot bigger than clive bundy.
9:04 pm
all right? they're setting a precedence, you guys. a precedence >> wow. trace ghallager has been monitoring this and has the latest. trace? >> now, we know there are a thousand people out there supporting the bundy family and they're not leaving. they're sleeping in their cars, they're creating tent cities and digging in for what they could be, what they believe could be a very long landoff. many of the people are from armed militia from around nevada and around the rest of the country. concern here is that they may provoke an armed confrontation with the federal government or vice versa. now, remember the bundy family came out again asking people to remain peaceful and leave guns at home. some are listening and many are not. the 67-year-old bundy believes his life is in danger. he is now got armed security guards protecting his property.
9:05 pm
you'll recall bundy lost his right to graze cattle on the land in 1994. they designated this a tortoise habitat. the family says this is not about turtles or trespassing. this is about the overreach and abuse of power of government. and today, bubdy said he doesn't recognize his own country. listen. >> you see vehicles with armed soldiers in there. then i'm wondering where i am? i am not in afghanistan. i think i'm in nevada. i'm not sure right now. why would these people be here? after me? >> the bureau of land management is holding a conference call. we're listening in. they say they've been trying to resolve this for the better part of 20 years but the bundy family

understand his position but we have court orders here, repeated court orders he's lost in the court on every turn to our, the federal government's right to have this land and his responsibility to pay grazing fees what skktly is cliven's argument that he has a right to graze there and only pay nevada and not the federal government? >> cliven told me he would be happy to pay all of the permit money to clark county, to the state of nevada, his issue is that the federal government has no business controlling 86% of the land in nevada. that is his beef. he says i'll gladly pay clark county and the state but not about to pay the federal government. >> it's a protest movement. it sounds like what you're saying and what i've seen just as a lawyer reading documents is that legally, he doesn't have a

9:09 pm
they should no more be raising firearms against the bundys than the bundys should be threatening arm against them. what is being done to deescalate tempers and get this under control? >> not much i talk to the clark county commission chairman. he told me that he sees no role for the clark county commission in any of this. he's been asked by cliven bundy to get involved. governor issued a couple statements negotiating. his statements have been tep yid at best. someone is going to have to stop this thing. on the ed ral side or its going to have to be clark county or the state of nevada. >> bundy has call attention to this issue. he's gotten attention of the national news media and others kevin, thank you for update. >> thank you.
