good morning to you and your family. you're watching "fox & friends" first. >> we do begin with this fox news alert. hate in the heartland. a 73-year-old gunman opens fire outside kansas city, leaving two people dead at a jewish community center and one more at a jewish retirement home. >> kelly wright has the latest on this story for us this morning, including the suspect's ties to the ku klux klan. >> even more disturbing is the possibility, the motive may have been over religion. the alleged shooter was heard yelling hile hitler before opening fire on two jewish communities. glen frazier cross, he also goes by the last name miller, is now in custody.

he faces charges of murder. once a grand dragon of the carolina ku klux klan. >> investigating it as a hate crime. investigating it as a criminal act. we haven't ruled out anything. >> at the jewish community center, the gunman killed dr. william lewis corcoran and his grandson. they had gone to the center to audition. their family said through their church, we take comfort knowing they are together in heaven. >> he was just a kind spirit. so much talent every day that he showed us all. and the smile that he gave us just every day in his devotion for others. >> the third victim, a woman, has not been identified. she was shot at a nearby retirement home. president obama released a statement expressing his grief over the attack, pledging full support of the federal government in this case. >> kelly wright joining us live this morning.

thank you, kelly. the deadline has passed. the ukrainian president gave protesters until 2:00 a.m. eastern time to lay down their weapons, but the deadline has come and gone. he has vowed to use the ukrainian army to wage a full-scale anti-terrorist operation against pro-russian militants. this after a security officer is killed and five others are wounded during a gunfight at a police station seized by pro-russians. ukrainian troops are being sent in as the volatile region gets one step closer to a civil war. this as the u.n. calls an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis that is just getting worse. and terrifying moments on a southwest flight out of chicago. the captain forced to make an emergency landing in omaha after an unruly passenger tries to open up a door at 30,000 feet in the air. passengers say they noticed the man acting very strangely. at one point, he even came out of the bathroom soaking wet.

three passengers tackled him until the plane landed when the air marshals took him off in handcuffs. they got to sacramento safely, just two hours later than the scheduled arrival time. the search is on for the bear that mauled a central florida woman in her own driveway. a wildlife official says that terry franna, she caught five black bears digging through the trash and that's when one of bears attacked. >> one of the bears stood up, knocked her down, and started to maul her. >> i went to the back porch door, and i went in and i saw my mom on the floor. >> she's fine. she's stable. she's still pretty traumatized from it all. >> i bet. the bears apparently got into the garage after she left the door open. officials say that they have killed at least four aggressive bears in that area, but they didn't say if the bear that attacked franna was, in fact,

one of them. two runners competing in this weekend's rock 'n' roll half marathon in raleigh collapsed and died during the race. ems and medical personnel, they were immediately on the scene attempting to revive each runne participants in the race. their causes of death unknown. kathleen sebelius is now out of a job as health and human services secretary and she's now finally admitting the obamacare rollout was flawed. on "meet the press," she even went as far to say the rollout goals were wrong. >> it was a team in place with other people, outside experts coming in, kicking the tires, regular reports, regular dashboards on the tech side. but clearly, the estimate that it was ready to go october 1st was just flat-out wrong. >> so was it her choice or the president's to step down? here's what she said when asked if the president tried to talk her out of leaving. >> well, it made it pretty clear

that that really wasn't an option to stay on. >> sebelius also admitted the website could have used more time and testing. just one day after releasing about 400 head of cattle that had seized the bureau of land management says that it's tried to resolve their conflict with nevada rancher clivin bundy. steve is with us on the cattle battle. >> good morning. the bureau of land management has backed down with that bitter dispute over unpaid grazing fees. the showdown has pitted claims of government overreach against a law requiring fees be paid when cattle are grazed on public lands. hundreds of armed protesters, supporters of rancher bundy had threatened to forcefully prevent the blm from rounding up his cattle. the government claims bundy owes more than a million dollars in fees over the past 20 years. >> for once, we finally back the

blm down because they don't have law enforcement authority. if you break it down, their own law enforcement authority is internal and they're running around like cops and intimidating people, and the people are just fed up with it. >> the bureau stopped its round-up of bundy's cattle saying the conditions on ground required a different approach. in a statement, the bureau said, in part, we've made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concerns about the safety of our employees and members of the public. the blm will continue to work to resolve the matter administratively and judicially. the fight between bundy and the blm part of a decades long battle by western states to try to regain control of federal lands in those states. back to you. >> thank you, steve. to some extreme weather that we're checking out for you this morning. look at this video. a twister caught on camera. the tornado touching down. this is in lovelady, texas, just

north of houston. >> looks like those cars are driving straight toward it. one woman was injured after a tree came crashing down on to her home. maria melina is here with the latest for us. >> good morning. that tornado threat continues early this morning. we do have a tornado watch in effect for 8:00 a.m. central time for the states of mississippi and parts of northeastern louisiana. we have these storms rolling through early today that do have the potential to produce some more tornado touchdowns, and that risk for severe storms is going to continue to move eastward into parts of alabama and also parts of the florida panhandle today. then tomorrow, that same storm system continues marching eastward, and eastern parts of south carolina, north carolina, and also southeastern virginia do have the possibility to see more severe storms. and we're not only looking at the risk for tornados, but also damaging winds, potentially in excess of 60 miles per hour and large hail with these storms. the other big threat with this storm system is very heavy rain, and there is a flood concern across parts of new england and

also parts of the upper great lakes, because we're not only expecting very heavy rain from this system, but also rapid snow melt from temperatures warming up ahead of it. that's going to be a big concern. h temperatures ahead of this system, in the 70s. temperatures in minneapolis, just in the 30s. let's head over to you. >> just a little tease, i guess. >> yeah. even some areas picking up a little snow behind this storm system. so a lot going on. >> thanks. today in the search for the missing malaysian flight 370, crews are deploying a small submarine to scan the floor of the southern indian ocean. they're hoping to find debris from that jet. there haven't been any confirmed signals since last week, but officials say it is the most promising lead that they have had in in search. meanwhile, another possible development as crews have spotted an oil slick. >> i can report ocean shield detected an oil slick yesterday evening in her current search area.

his little son. speaking of food, the jewish festival of passover begins at sundown tonight, and jews will celebrate their freedom from slavery in ancient egypt. festivities include a traditional dinner, where symbolic foods are eaten, such as the unlevined bread jews took from them during the exodus. passover ends on april 22nd. taxpayers might have a little less to worry about this season. the irs is claiming your chance of getting audited is the lowest in years. lauren tells us why and has our other top business news. >> taxes are due tomorrow, and here's the good news. your chances of getting audited are the lowest they've been in years. here are the reasons. budget cuts to the irs and new responsibilities for the irs. this year, the agency has fewer audits auditing returns fewer than since the '80s.

the number expected to shoot even lower this year. something to consider. gas prices are up. but higher now for 23 days in a row. the national average today, $3.64 for regular unleaded. that's up eight cents in the past week alone. some parts of the country already dealing with $4 a year gasoline. gas generally gets more expensive as the weather gets warmer. and as tensions flare up in other parts of the country like in russia, where the european union buys a third of its gas. number one at the weekend box office, once again "captain america: the winter soldier." it has collected $159 million here in the u.s. and about double that overseas. "rio 2" brought in $39 million over the weekend. "oculus" $12 million. "divergent" fell to fifth place.

yourself in handcuffs. aldon smith arrested at los angeles international airport after allegedly claiming he had a bomb. this video obtained by "tmz" shows him being questioned by police. he told a tsa agent that he had a bomb in his bag after he was selected for additional screening. police said he became belidge rant and appeared to be drunk. he could face up to a year behind bars. new information in thursday's horrific crash between a fedex truck and tour bus which left ten people dead, include -- the first dispatch recordings from emergency responders. >> it is affirmative. semi versus a tour bus. stand by further. >> be advised, there is another vehicle about 50 yards to the east side off of the freeway. looks like lots of wounded.

that reads "i'm a bully." >> maria scally from wjw in cleveland has the story. >> reporter: edmund sat at the intersection for five hours on sunday holding a handwritten sign saying he is a bully who picks on children who disabilities. municipal court judge gayle williams buyers ordered the 62-year-old to serve this public punishment. it was part of his sentence for harassing his neighbors, the prew family, that includes two adopted african-american children with multiple disabilities. your comments about the sentencing? according to police, there were a number of incidents over the past 15 years that went beyond name calling. do you feel you bullied this family? do you feel that your actions were that of a bully? he chose to let the sign do the talking for him. never responding to any

there where the lights are always shining. good morning. thanks for joining us. we have this for you now. a reporter's guide on islam under fire. critics saying that the first amendment is being sacrificed for political correctness. a washington state university published the guide saying, for example, that journalists should not publish images of muhammad because it's forbidden by the koran. the guide has been endorsed by the council on american islamic relations. flames shoot into the sky as a fire tears through a st. paul chilean town. 12 people are dead now. and 500 injured. more than 2,000 houses were destroyed. 10,000 others are fleeing to shelters now. the fire started in a forest near the port town over the weekend. crews thought that they had it all contained, but then overnight, strong winds kicked the fire up wednesday again. two clear frontrunners emerging in afghanistan's presidential election.

passengers say that they noticed the man acting strangely. >> he got up and went to the rear of the plane and tried to open up the hatch, and let himself off. so i don't know if he was on drugs, or, you know -- >> was he saying anything? >> he was mumbling. but you really couldn't understand what he was saying. >> can you imagine? three passengers tackled him until the plane landed, and when air marshals took him off the plane, they did that in handcuffs. the other 134 passengers eventually got to sacramento safely, just two hours later than the scheduled arrival time. a 14-year-old getting the scare of a lifetime after she thought it would be funny to tweet a terror threat to a major airline. american airlines, hello, my name is ibrahim and i'm from afghanistan. i am part of al qaeda and on june 1st, i am going to do something really big. bye.

>> nancy pelosi also said that she thinks race plays into how republicans have responded to president obama's administration. on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the boston bombings, a survivor revealing that she left a taping of nbc's "meet the press" in tears. the dancer lost her left foot in the bombings. she says that she asked the nbc executives to leave out the names of the suspects. but they did anyway. they were aware of her request but couldn't make any guarantees. just one day after releasing about 400 head of cattle that it had seized, the bureau of land management says it's trying to resolve the conflict with nevada rancher cliven bundy. doug has the latest. >> this round goes to the ranchers, but the battle is not over yet.

the federal government backed down after trying to seize a nevada family's cattle, accusing them of grazing on public lands without making payments to the federal government. the federal bureau of land management seized about 400 head of cattle only to return them after a standoff with the family and their supporters threatened to turn violent. >> those cattle are ours. they're cliven bundy's family's cattle. they've stolen them and they realized it. they're our cows and they get to come home to the place they've lived all their life. >> the bureau of land management isn't done, though. they say they still plan on trying to enforce grazing fees in the family, which amount to about a million dollars. here's what they say in a statement. "we have made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concern about the safety of employees and members of the public. the blm will continue to work to resolve the matter administratively and judicially.

tornados and even damaging winds. by tomorrow, that storm system continues moving eastward into the carolinas and southeastern virginia. this storm system also has a lot of moisture with it, so we do expect heavy rain across parts of the upper great lakes, new england, and even across the south. so there is a flood threat in place with several watches in effect. temperature-wise, ahead of the system, very warm. widespread highs in the 70s. behind it, cold, though. take a look at those highs. 40s in chicago and only in the 30s in minneapolis. over to you. >> thank you so much. david? >> reporter: good morning. they haven't detected any signals from the plane's black boxes now for nearly a week. it looks like those batteries must have now run out. the australian authorities, which are leading the search in the southern indian ocean say they intend to send a robotic submersible down today. the area they are searching is over a thousand mile ace way from perth, australia. they believe the plane which was originally flying from china to malaysia three weeks ago must have been diverted there. up until now, they've been searching for the black box signals by dragging a pinger locater from the u.s. through the water, but it hasn't detected any signal since last tuesday. search teams detected four sounds over a week ago, which they believe to be consistent with the black box's signals. >> we need to pursue this lead as far as possible.
