starts now. breaking tonight, the most powerful man in the united states senate throws more fuel on the fire. in the showdown between the feds, rancher cliven bundy and his supporters. welcome to the "kelly file," everyone. i'm megyn kelly. the high-profile fight between a nevada rancher and federal ag t agents took a new twist as harry reid's son rory a democratic politician condemned the nature, the heated nature of this dispute. that saw americans staring down armed federal agents last weekend. listen here. >> what strikes me about this is how heated it's become. it seems to me there has to be someway to deescalate this. >> yes, there has to be. apparently, however, his own father didn't get the message because at an event in las vegas this afternoon, senator reid, that man's father blasted cliven bundy's supporters as domestic

terrorists. watch. >> these people who hold themselves out to be patriots are not. they are nothing more than domestic terrorists and i think we are a country that people should follow the law and what went up in maesquite is not ver good. they are domestic terrorists. >> my next gust was in the room when senator reid said that and just got off the phone with kevin bundy. he hosts a local afternoon radio show. good afternoon. i want the audience to know harry reid was quiet when it was going on and now it's over and his son said deescalate, harry reid is upping the antic. what else did he say? >> he's throwing fuel on the fire. he said cliven bundy has not paid his taxes. this is the same charge that was leveed against mitt romney

during the presidential campaign. i talked to cliven bundy less than an hour ago and says he has no back taxes to pay, he's fully paid up when it comes to taxes. he said in response to the charge of domestic terrorism, he says the real domestic terrorists is the blm that came in with up a weapons, 200 plus strong. he says they are the domestic terrorists, not him. >> so the grazing fees that cliven bundy didn't pay, that's not the same thing as taxes. so harry reid is leveling a new acquisition against mr. bundy that he doesn't pay taxes? >> exactly, in the same sentence he says he doesn't pay grazing fees and he doesn't pay his taxes. it's not a matter if he mistook one for the other. he used both in the same sentence. he's accusing cliven bundy of not paying his taxes. cliven bundy says that's just not true. >> with all due respect, what does anyone care what harry reid's son says about this? he called for cliven bundy to e

why those m 16s were pointed at women and children and hard-working ranchers. i want an explanation. because the more i keep on looking at my footage, that looked like afghanistan, and if there was anything that was domestic terrorism, it was per p -- pby the government, not the people. >> harry reid spoke about this when he talked about women and children and how they were used, he says, by the supporters of cliven bundy and what he accuses them of is a sheriff that came on fox news early they are week but here is mr. reid today. >> they had sniper rifles on the freeway. they had assault weapons. they had automatic weapons and as one of the former sheriffs said, women and children lined up because if anybody got hurt, they wanted them to get hurt because we wanted the federal government hurting women and

children. >> i was at the front of the front line. i heard nobody say that we were going to put women and children first. nobody said that. nobody said let's go forward with guns out. who is going to shoot that guy? who is going to shoot that guy? if you listen to the video that i have and gave you, everybody said let's be peaceful. at the same time i had a sense it was going to go in the wrong direction, not because of the people on my side but because of the people on the other side. if i can use your camera for one second, senator, i am calling you out right now on national television. i've called your office today. i'm going to call your office every day until you grant me an interview. i'm going to sit down like a poll lit businessman and i'm going to sit down and ask you one question, why did you point guns at the american people? it to protect turtles?

keep cows or was it for some other reason? because we don't work for you. you work for us. >> some people are suggesting that the harry reid had some stake in this whole matter and that he was against the rancher, cliven bundy for political purposes. he wanted the land for development and people that had his political pockets, none of which is substantiated but there is evidence of that out there. nonetheless, mr. reid is calling more attention to this. it was over. people were moving on. he keeps stoking this fire. >> right, and the main stream media will get behind him and now everybody on the other side so to say, democrats will sit there and say crazy tea partiers, crazy militia, crazy americans, come mess terrorists. you know how passionate i am of terrorism. i witnessed 9/11. i know what took place in boston. it is disrespectful for americans for that man to call these people terrors ed.

some sort of charges against mr. bundy, what is likely to happen? because mr. bundy has had the law not on his side in this dispute, and yet, he seems to have been standing up on principle throughout this dispute. >> well, look, i don't think we can defend lawlessness. it seems clear to me looking at the case that he is in the wrong, at least as far as the statutes are concerned -- >> legally. >> the question is, the question is twofold number ones of prosecuting description, which the obama administration likes to talk about, this is proportionty of response. what is most disturbing of what happened today is the way we trivialized terrorism. this country is the victim of terrorism in recent memory, mass murder attacks to compare the people in nevada to terrorists

consult on the future of egypt. maybe it's -- maybe there is rational explanations but to get whipped up about terrorism in the wake of what has gone on in nevada after this pattern of behavior with people who are actually either mass murderers of people who plotted mass murder. i don't get it. >> we've been looking at this case all week and i've said, publicly, as a lawyer, i don't think cliven bundy has a legal leg to stand on in this dispute. you wrote an interesting post online agreeing with that principle and reaching that conclusion on your own, i should say but also suggesting that it would be -- he's in a tough situation. administration is in a tough situation here in part because public opinion is that they, too, have been very cavalier about certain laws. >> right. our respect for the rule of law depends on our acceptance of the

proposition the people in charge of executing the laws faithfully execute the laws as the president is obligated to do in the oath of office and constitution. if the public gets the sense that the administration itself is lawless, those whose mission is to carry out the law are themselves in violation of the law, they lose the credibility and the legit ma sto handle situations like in nevada. to listen to harry reid tonight, you know, talk about we have to have the rule of law, i've got two words for harry reid. uka mountain. the uka mountain facility is something that this nuclear storage facility that the obama administration and harry reid have basically flouted federal law in trying to frustrate the dc circuit court of appeals slapped them down a number of times because they won't compile with the law and a government that stops compiling with the law has an awful lot of trouble

holiest of the days. it come memerates the resurrectn of jesus christ. if you look at the media coverage of easter in a three-year period. 89% of the stories done on easter deal with the secular side. many didn't deal with easter as a religious holiday. >> why should the media focus on the religious aspect of easter? why should they be focussing on it as opposed to the more secular icons like peeps? >> let me try to reverse it. there are secular holidays here. memorial day, 4th of july, there are people who go to church on memorial day to honor the fallen, go to church to pray for our country. that doesn't mean this should be

a religious holiday. it's a secular holiday. and you can recognize the religious nature of it. i'm saying, these are religious holidays and they should be recognized as religious holidays. if there is a secular spin, who cares. look at christmas, a two-year period on christmas and two-year period, 1.3% of the stories of christmas mention the word god. it's the birth of christ, not a shopping day. >> i know one of the hosts or segments you've taken issue with or a couple of times has been kathy lee or hoda on "the today show." kathy lee is a christian but she can have fun talking about pink martinis she'll have on easter. why does she wind up on a segment because she does that? >> no, it's just an example. she is a wonderful person, and these stories are not offensive,

it's not offensive at all to have these stories. what is troubling is the media is going out of their way not to mention, not to recognize the religious aspect of a religious feast day. why do only 11% of the stories about a religious feast day mention it. why do 1.3 stories of christmas mention god? why do you think the answer is? >> seems like they are afraid. >> is that the reason, they are affrraid to get sued? >> in two days, i'm going to have eight granddaughters pawing me for christmas. that might be my vision from christmas two days from now and i might have a wonderful time with easter egg hunts but at the end of the day, easter is the celebration of the resurrection of our lord and i make no apologies for that and i wish the media could acre knowledge

developing tonight, growing anger from veterans across america tonight after a "new york times" piece posted titled veterans and white supreme si. it suggests somehow, they, the vets represent an increased risk to our safety. and look at the graphic we're about to show you. paul is the founder and ceo of iraq and afghanistan veterans of america and served as a first lieutenant and platoon leader from '03 to '04. good to see you again, megyn. >> what are you hear sging? >> from the moment this hit the web, everybody across the board, no matter their political background, they outraged and offended. look at the graphic.

until someone is held accountable. chris, maybe that 49% could be half the country's republican, half the country is democrat but the 67% that want congress to keep investigating this. what does that tell you? >> it tells you there is a considerable number of people who say that would fall into the category and say maybe it wasn't directed by the white house but something bad happened and congress ought to keep going. we in washington believes the universal revolves around us and the talking points of the day. occasionally we get a snapshot of what descent americans think about things and this is one of those. washington is tired of talking about the irs. today the president says he's tired of talking about obamacare and washington is tired of these. we want new distractions and entertainment. turns out the american people are not satisfied with the answers they have gotten on this issue, and not a majority but a

investigation. >> it hasn't been tied to the white house yet. the irs scandal is not tied to the white house, it hasn't. more and more this week we've seen a couple of e-mails emerge that call into question what role did elijah cummings and the house minority staff have in looking at conservative groups. how much were they talking to the irs? was it more than they admitted publicly. you have this partisan sniping pointing the finger at elijah cummings and the regular american struggles to celebrate the weak from that but it matters in assessing their denials here. >> well, credibility does matter, and it is sad, i think, that if you look at the ratings of congress, they are, you know, in the pits. i served in the congress 12 years. i thought it was bad quite frankly when newt gingrich was the speaker of the house and i

deal is reached to deescalate prorussian groups pulling back. what did you find when you got there? deescalation? >> reporter: not at all, megyn. clearly thanks memo either hasn't gotten to the commanders in the field or president putin from russia isn't sending it to his loyalest here inside of ukraine. as we went around, this is still a city, a region very much on the verge of war. this is one of the main government buildings in the eastern part of the ukraine that the separatest have taken over. there is russian patriotic music playing and barricades to prevent any kind of entry by the ukrainian military. a lot of guys walking with baseball bats, faces covered and obviously, people with a lot of heavy anti-american sentiment. america kills the southeast up on the top there, a message to the american government hanging there. we had to blur it out, america

something you. >> and right now, the ukrainian military is walking a very fine line here. the last thing they want to do is give the russians a pretax to send the tens of thousands of troops they had staged on the boarder here into the eastern part of the ukraine, something that president putin says he has the right to do but hopes he does not do. clearly, tensions on both sides inside this city are very high, megyn. >> leyland, there were reports earlier today that flyers were being circulated by russian supporters in ukraine demanding that jews identify themselves and register with officials. were those reports true? >> reporter: well, certainly there were flyers passed out. even secretary of john kerry weighed in. he called them grotesque.

we talked to one reporter with knowledge and believes, well, it probably was a proukrainian group passing out those flyers to page the russians look bad. either way, so far as we can tell there is no one saying or trying to make jews register their families or anything like that. >> very, very interesting. leyland, thank you. well, hours ago president obama went to the white house briefing room to discuss the deal that we reached with the russians earlier today and warning against being too optimistic. >> my hope is that we actually do see follow through over the next several days. i don't think given past performance that we can count on that, and we have to be prepared to potentially respond to what continued to be, you know, efforts of interference by the russians. >> lieutenant colonel ralph peters is a retired officer specifically trained as a soviet russian analyst.

what do you make of this? we have the prospect of diplomacy and that may deescalate this situation but warning that a military option is just not on the table, period. >> well, it was good to hear the president sounding a little bit sobered about his intimate relationship with vladimir pu n putin. nobody is talking about that, he needs to shut up. he's telling putin we're not going to do anything military, we won't but you don't have to drone on it. we're telling putin we're afraid of him. megyn, the text of the deal worked out in geneva is appalling. it's a gift of valladimir putin >> how so? >> it doesn't obligate putin to do anybody or give anything up. he can say i don't control those

people, they are local patriots. fatally and fatefully i fear it denies the ukrainians the ability to enforce ukrainian law on ukrainian territory. i suspect we shoved it down the ukrainian's throats but megyn, this is appalling because you see, president obama just is not a match for vladimir putin, kerry is not a match for the foreign minister. putin thinks in terms of decades. president obama thinks of getting through the crisis. putting obama against putin is like putting a toy poodle against a pit bull. guess what is going to win? >> is this like syria, we came out and threatened and said you better not and when things got really bad and we didn't want to follow through on the threats, we papered a deal like okay, here is a solution and many came out and criticized it as that's

south korea tonight with the late breaking details. >> reporter: megyn, it's just after daybreak here in south korea and again, the weather does not look promising for the rescue divers. on thursday, they had a difficult time getting their job done, fast currents, rising waters, very cold waters prevented them from getting into the ship pumping oxygen into the wreck just in case there are passengers that are hiding out in air pockets inside the wreck. they are going to attempt to do that more today, but it's already been two days since the boat went down. hypothermia is a real fear that if anyone did survive, the thinking, it might just be too late. of course, families are still holding out hope. some say they received text messages from their children as the boat was going down. some of these text messages have even said, either six of us hiding -- inside the dining
