week. we'll see you next "fox news" sunday. great week, we'll see you next fox news sunday. this is the fox report. tonight as christians around the world celebrate easter, pope francis selling the faithful in st. peter's square keep the needy in your heart. the pontiff also praying for a swift end to the crisis in eastern ukraine. both sides there continue to clash as a temporary truce krumbles. >> deadly violence in ukraine. bullets flying in the country's east. ukraine and russia now pointing fingers as u.s. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle renew calls for action. and boston, feeling strong ahead of tomorrow's marathon. >> somebody said it may be the safest place in america.

>> but fears still linger. >> i do think it's very well for theified. it would be difficult to penetrate that. i am concerned a copy cat demonstration. >> fox reports on what's being done to protect the city. also an out of this world delivery. astronauts at the international space station receiving an easter treat. and you can imagine, they are pretty happy about that. today christians around the world are celebrating easter. it is the most holliday on the christian calendar. and at the vatican, pope francis celebrated his second easter mass as pontiff. there were more than 150,000 pill prims grims, young and old came from around the world to hear the pope's message. it was a simple one this year. peace. connor powell with our story.

>> he's celebrating his second easter as pontiff. today, delivering a message of solidarity with orthodox christians who are also celebrating easter this weekend. pope francis praying today for peace between the two warring factions and also an end to the bloody civil war in syria which has killed more than 150,000 people. the pontiff telling the faithful who packed st. peter's square this morning that in jesus, love couldn't kers hate and goodness couldn't kers evil. he has focused the church away from issues like abortion and homosexuality. francis is also reaching out to leaders of other faiths, including rabbis and imams. >> pope francis will join for a

historic trip next week. >> we'll go to jerusalem and showing you orthodox christians holding mass, at the church where they believe jesus was crucified, buried and resur recollected. the site traditionally believe to be the birthplace of jesus also. >> we have to turn to the ukraine for what was a truce has shattered. the armed clash happened at a checkpoint that was set up by pro russian gun men. both ukraine's temporary government and russia say the other side is to blame and it's all raising concerns escalating violence could provide russia an excuse to seize more ukrainian

territory. you may remember that russia recently annexed the crimea region and they already have tens of thousands of troops stationed along ukraine's border. in the eastern ukraine city tonight, tell us what is happening exactly where you are. >> reporter: jamie this region was already on the brink of war. it is now just one step closer. it's pretty typical for both sides to blame each other, the russian foreign ministry and the ukraine's also playing the russians. let's show you the footage from this scene there there were at least two burned out cars at this pro russian checkpoint along one of the northern roads here in the eastern part of ukraine. according to the ukrainian interior ministry, three people

died in what appears to be a gun battle. who exactly was behind this attack and for that matter who fired first is still very much in dispute. the ukrainians will tell you that these pro russian separatists are being trained and/or beganized by moscow who have special forces team and intelligence units already operating inside ukraine to provide logistics. already these pro russian spraft -- separatists control many of the buildings. they say they want a referendum in the eastern part of ukraine about possibly becoming its own country or joining the russians. as for the separatists themselves they spent this easter attending services, they left their compounds without the threat of arrest by the ukrainian security forces, oftentimes in their uniforms, went to church, attending

services. a number of them that i talked to they felt very much protected by the russian government. often citing that vladimir putin had their back. president putin for his sake has said that the russian government reserves the right to use its military, to use force inside of ukraine to protect either russian interests and/or russian sporters. the ukrainian government is walking a very fine line here. they do want to give them any pretext or excuse to cross the border here into the ukraine. many will tell you it's simply a matter of when not if. >> it does appear they are at the ready for that. so the truce is broken this week. what happens next week, leland? >> it's very much a question of which side it willing to make good on their promises. obviously, the russians have

signed this deal that said that the pro russian separatists are supposed to leave these buildings. the ukrainians have said there's a deadline at some point they will indeed go ahead and use force to try to kick them out. and both sides have doubled down and say if the other side brakes -- breaks the truce, there will be consequence. the question is how much the united states and russia is willing to spend what happened politically in this part of the world? >> very interesting, thank you, leland. the grim task of recovering bodies new from the sunken ferry off the coast of south korea goes on. divers hampered by foul weather and choppy waters. they have found a way into the hull of the vessel. 240 people remain missing and most of them were high school students. grief and anger growing among

the families of the victims. you can only imagine. amid reports that many deaths could have been prevented. there's a transcript revealing communication problems. joining now by phone with the very latest from seoul is our reporter, correspondent, jason strouther who is going us now from grn. >> reporter: well, overnight the divers continued to look for some of the passengers that were inside of the chip. -- ship. as you said, no survivors. i see reports they pull at least one body out of the wreck. for many days, divers had trouble getting in there. bad weather conditions, very strong currents and that only

led to the frustration of the families who have been camped out not too far from the scene of the disaster waiting for any news about their loved ones and just throw progress. -- slow progress. they feel very let down by the rescuers. >> we can't really imagine. there was some discussion of possibly raising the ship -- bringing it up. is that even an option? >> reporter: well, the cranes are positioned around the wreck. it's completely submerged now. however, the coast guard is playing it very slowly. they -- they are still -- this is still technically a rescue and recovery operation, and they -- the coast guard has indicated that they are not going to start bringing that ship out of the water until they get the consent of the families. >> and the family members, i know, some of have given dna, but they are holding on hope. have you had a chance to visit with any of family members?

do any of them have confidence in what's being done? >> reporter: no. i've met some of the family members, some aunts and uncles who were heading down where they are waiting to the island closest to the scene of the wreck. they felt completely out of the loop. they didn't feel that they really knew what was going on. they didn't have a clear picture. you know, pretty much the government botched the numbers initially. they said their children had survived the disaster. it turns out they didn't. ever since that happened on wednesday, the families just feel that, you know, they have been misled in this whole ordeal. >> oh, my. absolute chaos amidst concern. thank you so much for the report. we'll continue to follow this story for our viewers. back here at home, obamacare battle lines are being drawn. the president is urging democrats to run on his health

and redemption. 36,000 runners will take part in 118th marathon. officials spanned the field of runners by 9,000 this year, to include then run erps who were not able to finish the race last year after the bombs went off. the field will include also first responders, victims, their families, and charities. meanwhile, a million people, the most ever are expected to cheer the runners along the 26.2 mile route beginning from 8:58 a.m., from hopkinston to the finish line at boston's boils ston street. american runners have never been motivated to finish first. one olympian hopes to be the first american woman to finish first this year.

>> we will never forget. those are the words that are seared into the residents of the folks in littleton, colorado. as you can imagine, they are marking a tragic memory on this easter sunday. 15 years ago today, this peaceful community was shattered by a mass shooting that left 14 students, including the shooters and a teacher dead at columbine high school. this week, residents and survivors paused to honor the many lives are lost. >> we are part of an unwanted family. none of us asked to be part of this family, this family of survivors of mass tragedy. >> thank you for the courage you have all since that day. it is certainly strengthened me in my private moments. >> their lives meant something not just to their families but to the communities that they lived in. >> there were more than 20

said the weighting the ground is affect th the landslide. >> we like to check in with fox affiliates around the country. tonight we found this in florida. a story about a growing sink hole that's threatening to swallow not one but two homes. kate burgess of fox affiliate wofl reports from the villages. >> oh, my god, that's awful. >> what started as a small depression in the grass, suddenly gives way to this massive sink hole. >> it's about 25 to 30 feet across to the surface and we're estimating between 40 and 50i6 feet deep. >> a few months ago, a home owner called engineers to investigate sink hole activity. >> i play golf on this hole earlier in the week and somebody said oh, look, they are pouring concrete into a hole over there.

a deadly gun battle shattered the truce in eastern ukraine. ukraine's prime minister blamed russia for that attack and says what is happening in his country should have the whole world concerned. >> president putin has a dream to restore the soviet union, and every day he goes further and further and god knows where is the final destination. >> well, vice president joe biden will be traveling to ukraine this week, a show of support for the government in kiev. still there are concerns in washington that the white house is not doing enough. joining me now live ton from washington, steve, who is exactly expressing these concerns and what do they think the u.s. doing? >> we have twos senators, one republican and one democrat, both on the foreign relations committee and both are calling for crippling sanctions.

russians still appear to be poised to invade ukraine. these u.s. senators say the russian forces need to pull back. >> unless they begin immediately moving them away, i really do believe we should be sanctioning some of the companies and the energy sector, i think we should hit some of the large banks there. >> this is where senator corker and i certainly agree. i think the time is now to rapidly ratchet up our sanctions whether it's on russian petro chemical companies or banks. >> if russia gets away with its current aggression, a nato ally could be the next target. >> do we have a straeged for dealing with the russians? >> some think we're head noog a new cold war. just as we did in the 1950s, the u.s. might try to isolate and

contain the russians. vice president biden will be in ukraine to offer moral support in tomorrow. and tuesday. ths "the new york times" said the obama administration strategy will be to look beyond ukraine as it tries to deal with vladimir putin. the report says in the long term, the u.s. will try to minimize the disruption putin might cause and try to make russia a pariah state. the president's law will be an up coming factor in the new elections. you can bet on that. the gop holding 45 seats and they need to pick up six to take a clear majority. democrats on the hill meantime, there are few exceptions but they have largely been silent on the health care act. elizabeth with details on that

the keystone xl pipeline is putting red state democrats in a tight spot. senators from states such as north dakota, alaska, and lax, among others are working to distance themselves from the delay. >> you are seeing a real skit issue reaction from mary landrieu. really criticizing the administration for its delay. republicans are now favorites to win at at least six seats and take ahold of the senate majority. lawmakers on the right have an edge which could explain why so many democrats are focusing on high turnout numbers. jamie, back to you. >> all right, elizabeth. thank you. there was another air strike over yemen today and it's reportedly claimed the lives of several suspected leaders of al qaeda. it was the second recent attack against the terror network. and high government officials in yemen tell us today's targets were training camps in a rugged

mountain region. the u.s. military does regularly carry out strikes against yemen's local al qaeda branch. washington considers it to be the most active in the world. tragedy strikes a rural highway. a bus loaded with passengers crashes at very high speed. it's our top story as we go around the world in 80 seconds. pakistan, that tour bus slammed into a tractor-trailer parked on the side of the highway. at least 42 people were killed, including 14 children. crews rushed to survivors trapped inside the mangled wreck. a local hospital flooded with victims, many of whom had to wait to be treated. iraq, a homicide bomber targeting a private college in baghdad. his belt bomb going off just outside this school's main gate, killing at least five. three our militants also
