from signing up. an american winning the men's race. the first american man to win the marathon since 1983. and the women's winner is defending her title. and boston native finished 7th. and she finished fourth last year. >> that is a big desappointment for her. she was born and raced north of boston. this year's race was marketedly different for the runners and the people who packed the route with more than double the security in years passed. theyasmed up the police officer, of which 5 or 600 plains clothes officer. and many of them in the finished line. a lot of the dos and don'ts this year. and more rules than they have.

one don't was a back pack. if you had one you were stopped and checked and all of the runners were told to bring a fannie pack. quite a difference in the size. molly line is on security detail for us for the past two weeks figuring out what they need and doing and that is framing and molly what did they say about the race with a good five hours left now and tens of thousands of runners still on the course, how are things going. >> they feel like things are secower and no specified threats. and the law officers, among that group there are hundreds with specialized training and to look for threats and look out for an expositive or ia d.

and the massachusetts national guard combined with 26 different states are on hand to look for chemical and biological threats and massachusetts governor standing just above the multiagency coordination center. he came along with the homeland security dave johnson to look at things and how they are running and where everything is coordinated and this is what the homeland security secretary had to say. >> we look forward to a secure and safe event, but we remain vigilant. and one of the things we continually remind the public to do if you so something, say something. and every place on the course where we see crowds and surveillance cameras and they will be monitored from several places. there are also four state police

helicopters up in the air that have a down lake. and they have things looking at this from all different angles. bill. nmolly line framing in massachusetts. we'll be in contact with molly throughout the day as our coverage continues. and kevin culin, the paper won the pulllitxer prize. and kevin is with me this afternoon and good day for you. you just left the finish line and cover it every year. and what did you notice every year. >> one was clearly more police officers down there and more people down there. it is obvious that people have come in and not normally coming in on a marathon. and both from a security point of view and idea of coming back to the race. >> weather is fantastic. >> it was beautiful last year. and bostonians.

and anyone coming from the race and they are coming from countries around the world and when they say they want to make a statement what does that mean? >> the whole idea of not being deterred by what happened last year. and so there are noticeable. and i noticed people from different countries people are here and it is not in your face but people are clearly making a statement that this is our marathon. it belongs to the world and so the world is coming. >> i talked to the police commissioner. >> it is killing him because he can't run. now he is the stop cop. >> he wants to keep it friendly and family and fun. and you try to balance that with the amount of security around here. how are they striking that? >> i think first of all, there are standard line on this.

one of the check points and one of the cops there. you play hockey with them. and he made me open my coat. >> and security goes for everybody. to me, it is all after 9/11. the rules changed after last year. and i think people are take it in the spirit that matters. my son went through the checkpoint and can they -- they checked his bag. there were no specific threats that they knew of. an american has won. >> we are all trying to learn how to pronounce. >> he's naturalized american from aratribaia we call him meb.

one of weakness and indeed the policy is failing. putin wants to establish a regime in kiev that is like moscow. >> ambassador, i am sure you read the new york times colume david brooks that the president has a manhood problem. sdo do you think the president has an image problem? >> i think the term is a distraction. i think the president is weak fill civically. and a weak lead are. he is indecisive and lives a worlgd of red rick. you can be a strong female leader like margaret thatcher or weak like jimmy carter. his weakness led to declining american influence in the world specifically the middle east.

>> we see two leadership styles between president obama and vladimar putin. i want to get your take on the spin tactics that putten is using and not phased by the west. >> it is not my style for an american leader. but the puttin has the strategy and knows what he wants and he wants to re-establish russia in the space of the former soviet union. he is carrying that out. barak obama has no strategy or policy at all and weakens the united states around the world. it is not only an image problem but a fact in terms of decloining military budgets and a president that is follow-uppedmentally disinterested in american national security except when he can't avoid it. putin sees that weakness and taking advantage of.

know how a kid managed to defy the odds of 35. he stowed away in a rear wheel in a flight from california to hawaii. >> he did not buy a ticket but nearly paid with his life. freezing attaches and a lack of oxygen and a risk of a heart attack. it is a miracle that the run away survived. the teen got into an argument with his family and jumped a fence a boarded the hawaii flight. he passed out son after take off and regained consciousness dazed and confused. he was found wandering on the tarmac in ma ui. >> he looked pretty good. he is a young juvenile and

and secondly, it tells me, we were getting worried about these guys not only the terrorist prop gappeda video and they were patting each other on the back. and may have helped to tip us to the target. but more intelligence showing that president obama's restriction on drone attacks were back firing on us. and so this is all good. that is a large number of al-qaeda terrorist whether they are recruits or old drill sergeants, it is a good, good score. the important thing. they are a tactic and not a strategy. and we still don't have an aggressive strategy for dealing with al-qaeda. >> you said something there. do you think that the public dissimination of that video led possibly to the series of attacks we heard about in the last 72 hours?

>> it stands to the sense it embarrassed us and gave the go get them guys in the cia a leverage on the white house administration types that wanted to cut back on the drone strikes. as a former intel. smart people looking at those propaganda videos. and yahoo wonderful video from yemen. they might have picked up clues. and we to have friends and that might have helped in the targeting and the video might have back fired on the terrorist. >> and also the now intelligence you suggested has us worried. and from one sense where does that opinion come from. >> that is my view of on reading the tea leaves. but clearly al-qaeda was never destroyed and dismated and

annihileated. and couple of things. ultimately al-qaeda is not about us and whether we cut back and increase drone strikes and they create more terrorist. there will be more terrorist anyway. the problem is the comprehensive failure of the civilization of the middle east. that is what they work through themselves. in the meantime it is no short term fix. it is a long struggle. and sorry. that's the bad news and you got to kill these guys and i wore pink in a tribute to code pink. if not for code pink we wouldn't be killing the terrorist that fast. the obama administration looked at the protest against gitmo. it is a lot easier to kill the bad guys.

>> cornell. when you back off of the drone program, what dow argue is the affect of that? >> you take the panel off of the drone program things happen on the ground. what is that? >> what happens is. we think by backing off the drone program will make all of the tribal leaders happy and they want al-qaeda gone. and it just gives the terrorist breathing space. drones are a tool and not a strategy. and they are important tool in a strad edgy. i would like to see it to yemen to the massive concentrations of al-qaeda in syria and killing al-qaeda operatives in syria is not helping assad and helping keep america safe.

his death yesterday in a new jersey backyard. the 49-year-old brooklyn man was wearing a wing suit which lets you fly top-forward as you come down. the fed are investigating whether his specialized parachute opened properly. but here's what folks on the ground say they saw. >> the chute was here and he was here. so soon as i seen that, i knew he was in trouble. >> i saw the jumpers and i says, look, the parachuters. then i notice there had was one over here which shouldn't be and he kind of looked like he wasn't conscious. he was just spinning. >> officials say the victim had done hundreds of skydives. from boston today between the video feeds and the p.a. system they set up for additional security measures and doubling of the police force, it was a day of tension and this race will continue for another five hours. one man who was finished, bill miles, from portland, oregon. it is his third boston marathon. he ran last year and he's my guest now. after another completed race,

well, last year when the bombings hit, they were certainly wondering whether or not the runners would come back this year. not only did they come back, but they came back in record numbers with 36,000, the largest field ever in a boston marathon. an american finished strong. an american man won today's marathon, the first time in 30 years that's happened. you got to go back to 1983 to see that. we've got a few fox news runners in the mix as well, including senior producer jay seroco. he was not able to finish last year's race because of the bombing. he was approaching the finish line when the attack happened. right now jay's on the course, almost at the half-way point. we're pulling for him. also running today, fox and friends co-host anna was all jacked up to get on the course earlier today when she was on fox and friends.
