a historic event in the catholic church, millions of people are expected to flood back into the city tomorrow where the first time two popes will be elevated to sainthood the same day. pope john xxiii and pope john paul ii, both called the blessed. what is it that makes these popes saints and why now? joining us with the significance of this event, ashley mcguire, a senior fellow with the catholic association. good morning, ashley. >> good morning. >> this is historic and interesting day.

6:47 am
catholic law? >> to be a saint, the church opens a period of investigation to look into whether or not the man or woman being canonized lived a life that other catholics should model. i think pope francis is saying it was miraculous he convened the second vatican council which opened reforms in the catholic church, reformed the mass, all sorts of different things that made the faith come alive for catholics, which is consistent with things pope francis said about wanting catholics to rediscover the faith, freshness and fragrance of the gospel. with john xxiii -- pope john paul ii confronted a culture hostile to faith, very secular and very much hostile to life. >> we've got very interesting coverage planned here on fox.
